Description of the Vortex Corporation

Before we start, a few things. First of all, no whining about which elements I have taken from games, movies and other media. That is my choice and I am fully aware of it. Second, no whining about physics. I’m not interested in it, and though I try to keep things as realistic as I can, I am not going to calculate every aspect of my technologies, nor listen to anybody who does it for me. I want to have a nation that I like, not a nation that you like. Other than that, feel free to comment and ask questions. ~TVC player

History

The Vortex Corporation originally started out as a construction company. The owners, always looking for opportunities, eventually became succesfull businessmen, with their company regarded as one of the best in their field. Offering the highest wages in the industry, combined with a reputation of a very people-oriented working atmosphere, they managed to get the world's most qualified employees. Eventually, the Vortex Corporation became one of the pioneers in Terraforming technology. In time, TVC was the first firm to be able to offer full-scale services in this area of activity. Primitive as the projects were, not reaching more then 2,5 miles deep, and not yet able to affect climates, they guaranteed the Vortex Company of decades of employment and profits.

Years later, the organization had reached the size of a small country, and came into fierce conflict with the Dai Sheung collective and TerraTech Incorporated. In this "war", each company deployed their own private security forces to fight the two others. However, due to a briljant strategical move, the Vortex was able to prevail. The Corporation had it's headquarters set up in the Barush region at that time. Making their opponents believe that Barush was heavily underprotected after 6 months of conflict, both Dai Sheung and TerraTech send almost their entire force there. Naturally, all Vortex personnel and equipment had been evacuated long before, save for some special forces with orders to lead the hostile armies further into Barush territory. Naturally, some several hundreds of civilians also were left behind as cannon fodder for the enemy, to create a more convincing scenario. The Board of Directors unanimously found that their lives were worth the sacrifice, but has always been very reluctant to elaborate the selection procedures used to appoint those civilians that would stay behind.
The Dai Sheung and Terratech elements didn't encounter any Vortex resistance, but of course they did "coincedently" run into each other. This resulted in a massive battle in which the two forces practicly whiped eachother out.

The Vortex Company had managed to eliminate 70% of all Dai Sheung and TerraTech military units at the price of sacrificing their headquarters, without a single high ranked casualty in their own camp. The road was now clear for a hostile takeover. Vortex forces quickly occupied all important Sheung and Terra facilities. Both companies surrendered and handed over their posessions. The Vortex Company now owned an almost endless supply of assets and now indeed had the economical size of a wealthy country. The High Council decided it would be wise to concentrate these assets in a single region instead of having them scattered over the globe.
Eventually, after 3 years of search the choice fell on Sisgardia, where the Vortex Company, now renamed The Integrated Companies of the Vortex Corporation, occupies a large peninsula. Integration with the native population, descendants of the ancient Kushan race, was smooth and swith. Most of these Kiith members are now employed in technological or political functions throughout the Corporation. Lately, their possessions have been expanded with deep space colonies in the Caelum and Kharak systems.

One important aspect of the Vortex Corporation settling down in one region, was the creation of several large Conglomerates within the Corporation. With activities in many more fields than the traditional field of construction, companies within the Corporation started to emerge, each offering goods and services in their own area of expertise. More on the structure of the Vortex Corporation can be read later. Another important feature of joining the Sisgardian continent, was the membership of the Sisgardian Fellowship of Nations, the SFN, and later also the World Technologic Entity. Both organizations and the members connected to them allowed The Vortex Corporation swift technological development, as well as a tight group of allies that, together, formed a powerblock that has never even been threatened with destruction.

Employees

The employees of the Vortex Corporation enjoy fairly good civil rights. The Corporation abides by the Universal rights of man, and offers fair and caring contracts to all of its employees. Each employee works five days in the week, eight hours a day. The Corporation offers education, medical care and leisure activities of high quality to all of its denizens. However, just like in any other corporation, employees can be fired. When that happens, they are encouraged to move to another nation or to get themselves hired by another corporation.

Religion

Distribution of faiths over the population:

Christian: 76%
Stratos: 14%
Other: 10%

“Other” groups include muslims, sirithilists, buddhists, hindoes, jews and atheists. The Vortex Corporation allows all its employees to exercise any religion that does not worship a god that demands human sacrifice or physical abuse. Originally, the Vortex Corporation was almost entirely Christian, but migration brought the Stratos faith, plus a number of other cults and religions later on in its existence.

The center of religion lies in two complexes on the Utharian Peninsula. The first complex is the New Haven Academy. Founded by the legendary Sar Tzu and his brethern, this is where battlemages are trained and gain their knowledge. The academy standing here is flanked by several temples to Stratos, the God that is also the Holy Dragon of the Battlemages. The second center of religion is the New Dawn Academy. Much like New Haven, New Dawn is the Christian center, with temples and churches to the God of christians, standing around a huge and ancient Academy where many unique scrolls and artifacts are kept, though not nearly as much as the archives and collections of New Haven.

Way of life

TVC society is steeped in military tradition. Even if the Corporation has not engaged in war for many decades, it still strives to be at the cutting edge of military technology and their vessels, weapons and fighting methods are inferior to none but the oldest and most mighty of nations.
To curb their aggressive tendencies, the TVC employees actively pursue and sponsor a range of sporting activities. Many of these are bloody, gladiatorial-like competitions, while others are more like races. But whatever the sport, employees love betting on the outcome, making gambling a massive industry in the Corporation. The Vortex Corporation offers its citizens the best and the worst in living conditions. As long as you keep in line, do your job, uphold the laws and so forth, life can be fairly pleasant and productive. But for those who are not cut out for this strict, disciplined regime life quickly becomes intolerable. They lose their respect, family, status, everything, and the only options left to them are suicide or exile. Although not xenophobic as such, the Vortex Corporation is very protective of their way of life and tolerate only those foreigners that stick to the rules. However, exceptions do exist. Over the years, fellow SFN members have gained the absolute trust of TVC’s denizens, and foreigners from SFN nations are welcomed with open arms into the Corporation.

Structure of society

The Vortex Corporation has a quite complicated structure of society, especially to outsiders. Initially, after settling down in Sisgardia, the Board of Directors started to question their ability to rule a Corporation of millions with such a small group of people. After several years, it became clear that changes needed to be made, because control over the activities of the TVC employees was diminishing by the day. Eventually, the answer was found in the Kiith system of the Kushan descendants inside the Corporation. The Corporation entered several years of reform, and ended that period with the announcement of a new system. In early times, the Kiithid had used a High Council as a supreme governing body. The Vortex Corporation now adopted the same approach.

A high Council of twelve individuals was founded. To support their activities, twelve lower councils, each with their own chairman, were created to govern activities such as Infrastructure and Defence. In addition to the Councils, there were two other political aspects worth mentioning. First of all, that was the Elder Council. This is the convenant of the most experienced and wisest Battlemages in the Corporation. This council does not have any political power whatsoever, apart from the permission to rule their own order as they see fit. However, the Elders often provide the other Councils with valuable advice and information, and have thus become a respected and trusted group, that is now often called to shine their light on tough issues. The second point that needs to be discussed, is that this system was changed once again after several decades.

As the Corporation approached the 1 billion mark, it was once again noticed that the governing structure of the Integrated Companies did not suffice. A new period of change was entered, and the result was the current structure of the Vortex Corporation. This structure has five key elements. Obviously, each individual in the Corporation is eventually employed in of of the many conglomerates, firms and companies inside it. Each conglomerate is owned by one of the Kiithid. Each Kiith, in turn, has representatives in the Daiamid Council. Above the Daiamid, Council is the supreme ruling organ of the Corporation. An explanation of the terms used here can be found below.

The Conglomerates

The Vortex Corporation is active in almost every possible branche one can imagine, from massive space projects to something as simple as manufacturing paperclips. All activities are devided over hundreds of companies and conglomerates, each with their own management and board of directors. A description of the main conglomerates inside the Corporation will follow later. Managers and other leaders of the Conglomerates are appointed by the board of directors, on the criteria of capacity, personality and knowledge.

The Kiith

The Kiith system was adopted by the Vortex Corporation and initially belonged to the Kushan part of the popultion. In the present situation, every individual in the Corporation belongs to one of the major Kiithid. The Kiith is comparable with a family, tribe or clan. When born nuder the wings of a Kiith, one’s life will always be in its service. Each conglomerate in the Corporation is owned by a Kiith. Not only does this mean fierce competition between the various Kiithid, but also within the Kiith, companies always compete for the best market position. The Kiith has the duty to provide for all its members. If an individual gets confronted with poverty, disease or anything similar, the Kiith will always help him or her. One can compare the relation between the Kiithid and the conglomerates with cities and provinces: a country has several provinces, that each include a large number of cities and villages. In a similar way, the Vortex Corporation has several Kiithid, while each Kiith has a large amount of businesses. Leaders of the Kiithid, who are allowed to carry the name ‘Sa (for instance: Soban’Sa instead of merely Soban), are chosen by the other head figures of the Kiith: if one falls away, the remaining ones will chose a successor from the ranks of the Kiith.

The Daiamid council

The Daiamid is the ‘normal’ policital organ of the Corporation. Whenever the Corporation needs to adress an issue as a whole, for instance defence matters, foreign affairs, etc., it is up to the Daiamid Council to reach a decision. The Daiamid Council consists of representatives of each Kiith. Divided into functional areas, much like the old Lower Councils, the Daiamid is able to adress issues swiftly and in professional manner. When the Daiamid reaches a decision, every Kiith must be obedient. Even though the Kiithid have a great amount of freedom in the daily control of their Conglomerates and members, a Daiamid decree is binding.

Council

One might think that the Daiamid Council controls the Corporation. However, that is not the case. About a decade ago, Council was created. The twelve members of the old High Council were integrated into one body, that of a young S’Jet woman. Using Genpads and Neural Uplinks, this procedure was completed under top-secret conditions. A huge building was constructed in the Council area of Uthar, the TVC capitol. There, the twelve bodies of the High Councelors were placed in pods, designed to keep them alive much longer than the standard lifespan that they should have. Through the most modern of technology, their minds were brought together in the body of the young woman who had voluntarily offered herself for this task. Now, she is commonly referred to as Council. She has the right to either approve or dissapprove of the decisions that the Daimid makes. Whatever her judgement is, she is obeyed without questioning, without doubt, and without hesitation. The thirteen minds in her body process huge amounts of information at an incredible pace. In minutes, Council is able to evaluate the possible outcomes of dozens of decisions, realizing a much greater potential than any individual could reach. Just like the twelve bodies of the former members of the High Council, Council herself will also outlive many generations. After her body dies, the twelve minds inside her will be placed inside a new host. To the question whether Council is to be seen as many individuals in one body, or one individual with many minds, no answer exists. All that the TVC employees know is that she rules their daily lives, mostly from behind the scenes, but always taking the optimal decision.

Description of the Kiithid

Manaan

Although the blood bonds between Manaani are not strong—they range greatly in physical appearance and kiith traditions—they are nevertheless all considered one family, especially by outsiders who are often surprised by the cohesion within a Kiith with such diverse members. Two things seem to fascinate the Manaani: politics and exploration. Kiith Manaan controls enormous wealth, and of all the kiithid they are the most likely to produce a diplomat or a statesman. Manaani are also common in the ranks of scout pilots and are always eager to volunteer when it's time to fly an experimental craft: being the first to see anything new and different is a hunger that still burns deep in their blood. Though their lust for being the first to test new technology often brings them into friendly competition with the Sobani, the Manaani are respected universally. The conglomerates under their rule often relate to the service sector, such as education, legal firms, and business counceling.

Gaalsien

The Gaalsien are the Kiith that many wish would not exist. Holding a very diverse set of small and medium conglomerates, the Gaalsien do not have a dominating presence in any field, but are present in almost every possbile activity within the Corporation. The Gaalsien live their lives according to very strict and dogmatic rules, hailing from strict interpretations of both the Stratos and Christian faiths. Whenever possible, they emphasize their distrust of technology, always trying to convince the other kiithid to return to older and more traditional ways of life. Though this does not show any congruence with the Corporate mission, the Gaalsien are to valuable to dispose of, because of their diverse holdings across the globe. Hence, the Gaalsien are tolerated, though always regarded with suspicion.

Riif

The activities of the Riif kiith are as simple as they are crucial. They control only a small amount of conglomerates and firms, yet no Kiith can survive without trading with the Riif. The Riif are the farmers of the Corporation. Strong and gifted in the fields of technology and science, they use all that potential to develop their dominance in the field of agriculture. Out of all products relating to food and drinks, over 76% is manufactured or grown by the Riif. Often regarded as simple peasants, the Riif also have a very stabilizing effect on national politics. Always prepared to act as liaisons and negotiators, the Riif have settled many emerging conflicts between Kiithid and conglomerates, which over the last years has increased their reputation as people with common sense.

LiirHra

LiirHra is the smallest Kiith in the Corporation. Their activities are, therefore, also aimed at those businesses that operate on a small scale. Over the decades, LiirHra has become dominant in the internal market for jewelry, expensive clothing, luxuous vehicles, and other products intended only for the ‘happy few’. Not only has this created extensive ties with the attorneys and bankers from Kiith Manaan, but also with the Riif, when the LiirHra entered the market of luxuous restaurants and foodstuffs. A fairly new development of the LiirHra was their recent expansion to the market for large, space designed weaponry. The LiirHra’Sa figured that big, expensive weaponry was as much as a luxury commodity as a piece of jewelry, and their first steps into the sector of arms manufacturing are quite succesful, according to analists.

Soban

The Soban are a Kiith of discipline and solidarity. Focussing almost completely on activities relating to the military, the Soban, through their large influence in the Daiamid Council, are largely responsible for the strict way of life in the Corporation. Since early memory, the Sobani have been warriors. Always volunteering to test and implement new military technology, the Sobani have always been unmatched in their fighting spirit. The skills of Kiith Soban are always valuable, and they never lack for money and influence. Sobani are often preferred when influential kiithid like the Naabal need intelligence officers or security officers, and virtually all modern-day admirals and generals are trained at Soban-run military academies, which are now open to the public—one can pay for the training and discipline that was once available only to life-long Sobani. The Sobani are traditionalists in every aspect of life, but their rigid attitude is often forgiven in the light of the huge advantages that they give the Corporation from a military perspective.

Nabaal

The Nabaal are a very large, very old Kiith in the Corporation. They were one of the driving forces behind the founding of the Daiamid Council, and have always tried to implement as many elements from Kushanic culture into Corporate life. As long as anybody can remember, the Nabaal have been very skilled in any craft that involves metal, construction and infrastructure. Though responsible for many crucial inventions and technological advancements, the core competencies of the Nabaal are still located in Terraforming and Manufacturing activities, two fields in which they are regarded true experts. In the daily control over their Kiith members, the Nabaal are quite pragmatic. They are always quick to react to new developments, and tend to listen closely to the voices of their employees, creating a bottom-up way of making decisions. One surprising aspect of the Nabaali however, is the fairly high grade of atheism among their ranks. Though no explanation can be given for this phenomenon, the Nabaal themselves simply claim that they rely on their own strength, not that of God.

S'Jet

The S’Jet are the scientists of the Corporation. In any field that requires vast amounts of research, calculations and observations, the S’Jet can be found. Measuring the status of any member of their Kiith completely by the amount of knowledge the individual posesses, their scientific way of life is a very conscious choice of the S’Jet. Philosophers, astronomers, engineers, and many other functions like those are often filled by S’Jet. Even though they have a tendency to avoid war and conflict, it were the S’Jet that designed the Zephrim drives, Neural Uplinks and Shogata weapons for the hoverdynes, the Corporation’s main weapon since years. Also, when the Corporation expanded into space, Sjet supercomputers worked out the theoretical quantum waveforms of the hyperdrive module. Traditionally, the S’Jet hold little political power, yet in recent times that has changed. Not only is the body of Council a S’Jet woman, the chairman of the Daiamid Council, Councelor Delendre also belongs to this Kiith.

Somtaaw

Kiith Somtaaw is a kiith of the elements. Almost any conglomerate relating to mining, excavation, and a large amount of Terraforming companies are Somtaaw-owned. Hardly present in political and diplomatic functions, the Somtaaw have specialized themselves in the ‘dirty work’, supplying the Corporation with the raw materials it so desperately needs. When TVC expanded to the stars, the then still small Somtaaw saw new possibilities. While the other Kiith advised their conglomerates to be careful and conservative, the Somtaaw invested heavily in space technology, and it paid off. Today, the Somtaaw are dominant in the field of space logistics and supply management, owning one of the largest conglomerates in the Corporation: the Hermes Conglomerate. Out of all deep space mining activities, asteroid bases, and civilian carrier fleets, 65% is owned by the Somtaaw, a fact that has been steadily increasing their wealth and respect over the years. However, the Somtaaw still seem to have no desire for vast political power, even though it is in their grasp. They are still content with mining, transportation and distribution.

Paktu

Paktu believes fiercely in independence, and despises limitations of potential. Its people are optimistic, innovative and venturesome. Inside the Corporation, they are often found in activities relating to research and development, and the Paktu make up for almost the entire Foreign Affairs Council inside the Daiamid. The Paktu are always the first to try something new and to enter new markets, which has resulted in both huge profits and sizable losses in the past. Second in science after the S’jet, and also second in political strength after the Manaan, the Paktu are regarded as one of the most powerful Kiithid, and some even think they are the most influential Kiith, due to their excellent relations with the other kiithid, as well as many foreign governments. One thing about the Paktu is their extensive emphasis on nationalism. Some see the Paktu as the glue that holds the Kiithid together, others see them as a bunch of old men and women that want to interfere with every single thing. In any case, the Paktu have always been a valuable part of the Corporation.

Draconis

This particular Kiith is one of the two Kiithid with foreign roots. When the nation of Dragon Priests started migration to the Corporation, the former DP citizens were given their own Kiith as a sign of trust and mutual commitment. Assuming the name Draconis, this Kiith grew out to a respected, traditionalist Kiith. Their belongings are often related to medical technology and biology. Also, the Drake breeding colonies for the Battlemage Order are maintained, owned and managed by the Draconis. Strangely enough, the Draconis Kiith, with a heavy presence in the southern regions of the Utharian peninsula, seems to have a huge interest in naval activity. This is very strange, as the Corporation generally avoid anything naval in preference of hoverdyne or space activity. But, it remains a fact that the entire fishing sector is owned by Draconis.

Kendarat

Kiith Kendarat is the youngest of all Kiith, yet has already reached medium size. When contacts between the Corporation and the Grand Duchy of Tarasovka increased, migration also skyrocketed. Eventually, a motion concerning the Taraskovyans was brought before the Daiamid Council. Kiithid S’Jet and Riif proposed that the GDT migrants were awarded their own Kiith, just like the Dragon Priests had before. However, after extensive debate, the motion was rejected by the Daiamid. Then, something occured that once again proved the domincance of Council. After hearing the decision of the Daiamid, Council ordered her guards to bring the Taraskovyan ambassador before her. As the story goes, she merely looked at him when she arrived, her eyes seemingly probing his mind. After standing still for some fifteen minutes, without either of them saying a word, she thanked the ambassador for his swift arrival, and called for the Daiamid chairman. When the latter arrived in her quarters, she simply ordered the chairman to recall the Daiamid decision and grant the Taraskovyans a Kiith. Two days later, Corporate officials validated the documents that confirmed the existance of the Kendarat. Soon, it became clear that the decision of Council was a right one. The Taraskovyan integration with the Kiithid became almost complete, and their performance became even higher than it was before. Until this day, Kendarat is a very valued Kiith, with activities mainly concerning import and export companies, technical positions and, since a few years, several political positions.

Conglomerates

Here follows a description of the major conglomerates, firms and companies inside the Vortex Corporation, as well as mentioning of their respective owners and areas of activity.

MANAAN

Nugoeihuvi Corporation
The only large conglomerate that has focused on the entertainment industry. NOH, as they're commonly called, have always been suspected of strong ties to the international underworld, mainly because many of their products cater to that social element or are on the borderline of legality.

The tribunal is the only organization authorized to cancel deals or agreements made between companies. It is fully owned by the Riif’Sa, because of their reputation of neutrality.

Rosha
Rosha is the main competitor of Perkone. One would expect the Riif owned firms to strike a deal or something, but the two have been involved in fierce competition, creating low food prices for the TVC markets.

Safeguard Police Services
The Riif have always known how to make their neutral attitude a corporate advantage. SPS provides police and security services wherever a Kiith is not able to keep their citizens under control. Mainly active along the TVC borders, SPS enjoys good relations with many security firms in FTR, DNL and GDT.

LIIRHRA

Wiyrkomi Corporation

Sukuuvestaa, or SuVee as it is commonly called, is the largest real estate dealer within Sisgardia, it is estimated that they and the companies under them own nearly 10% of all land in TVC space. SuVee is the second largest of the conglomerates and is known for its ruthless, often unethical, business practices.

The VFU has participated in some great investment programs in the past, but they refrain from anything that is remotely risky.

Samael Banking & Investment
The SBI Bank represents old money: money from the old, established upper class families within the Kiithid. In recent years, with younger and more energetic management, the bank has become more involved in space industry investment, though on a small scale.

SOBAN

The War Academies were founded shortly after the Kiith were integrated into the Corporation. The academies have always had a very combat oriented slant, and offer military training to both internal and foreign students, for both normal combatants, officers and special forces.

Minedrill
Minedrill traces its history back to the development of deep space war vessels, to a special force unit within the Navy that rigged asteroids with explosives and used them as booby traps. After some time Sobani in the unit created Minedrill and used their special knowledge to quickly gain prominence within the mining industry.

Vortex Steel
VS prides itself of its missile systems and energy weaponry. Their Corporate image is that they can make any weapon, as long as the right minerals are provided. With S’Jet science companies as large shareholders, as well as Somtaaw interests in the company, VS is a major arms manufacturer.

Echelon Entertainment
Echelon Entertainment was created as a direct answer to NOH. Though NOH still has an overwhelming market share in the entertainment industry Echelon Entertainment has still managed to shine on its own and their products are becoming more and more popular.

KENDARAT

Ytiri
Ytiri is a rare example of an outsider company that manages to establish itself within the Corporation. Formerly an underworld smuggling company, Ytiri adjusted its operation to gain admittance into the Corporation. Since then the company has flourished and is one of the fastest growing companies of the past few years. Shortly ago, it was purchased by the Kendarat. Ytiri provides many warehouse and storage services in TVC borderlands.

Expert Distribution
The Expert brand can today be seen in all major cities in the world of, as this retail company has seen phenomenal growth in the last decade, thanks to their self-service policy and low overhead.

Expert Housing
Expert Housing was founded at the same time as Expert Distribution, but the two sibling companies have fared very differently. While Expert Distribution has been a continuous success story Expert Housing has suffered in a tough, highly competitive real estate market. The company is on the lookout for investment funds, which it hopes will help revive it. However, some already claim that Kendarat should just stick to their core competencies, and sell EH.

Council

Council Holdings
Council holdings owns the Council District in Uthar, the security services that provide safety in the cities, the police forces, the military, the intelligence services, and an amount of hospitals, schools and welfare services. Council Holdings is completely owned and controlled by Council herself, and is the only organization authorize to collect taxes from the other Kiithid and companies.

Armed Forces

As stated before, the armed forces and military units of the Corporation are under the direct control of Council. It is Council that decides on participation in international incidents, investments in new technology, etc. Naturally, teams of high ranking military officials and technical and strategical experts support her in those decisions, but she has the final word. The branches of the Vortex Corporate Defense Forces are the Army, Airforce, Battlemechs, and Navy. It should be noted that the Navy refers to space based units, as the Corporation does not deploy a sea based navy, relying completely on the help of allies and the deployment of air units for defence against sea-based attacks.

UNITS

Infantry

Marines
The Marine is the backbone of the Corporate armed forces. These highly trained forces, mostly hailing from the Sobani academies, fight either by themselves or alongside hoverdyne and terradyne elements. Their primary weapon is the Welby-Simms Dev20011 “Devastator” assault rifle, which is adequate for enemy infantry but underpowered against armored targets such as tanks and pantzer vehicles. Marine combat armor is designed for maximum mobility with optimum protection and is the best thing available short of powered armor. Their CB39 battlesuit is a combination of fused amalgam of hardened alloys, ceramic plates and Polysteel battleplastics formed to allow maximum maneuverability.

Black Wolf Special Forces
These special forces are masters of stealth and infiltration. A favorite tactic is to deploy them on high ground, taking out targets with their K516d High Impact Gauss sniper rifles. Within the WTE, a second sniper rifle was purchased from DLM, called the Longarm. Now, 1 our of every 4 Black Wolves carries a Longarm, giving their teams even greater range and accuracy.

Hoverdynes

05/DCAPC Command APC “Patriarch”
This is the corporate battlefield nerve center. Here, the field commander is supported by a crew of 3 to analyse data about the battle. An advanced communications system allows him to control his untis. Additionally, the APC can carry up to 20 infantry units, who can be rapidly deployed through the fully hydraulic rear doors. The APC is armed with a 200 kilocycle Electro Discharge Cannon to provide limited cover for exiting forces.

W/SAH-4 Scout Hoverdyne “Apus”
The Apus is a one-manned hoverbike, designed for scouting purposes. It is armed with a light Shogata 8Bx10 “BerZerk” pulse laser to ward of infantry forces. In combat it is usefull for hit-and-run strikes and flanking maneuvres. The scout hoverdyne relies on speed and agility to avoid enemy fire, as it is only armored with light polysteel15 armor. The Apus carries advanced targeting and visual enhancing equipment, strengthening its scout role. An added advantage is the ability to equip this unit with a RamTech light mine system, allowing it to hinder advancement of enemy forces.

01/SAC-34 LAT Light Hoverdyne “Sculptor”
The sculptor is a highly advanced hoverdyne used for patrols, fast attacks and deep scout missions. It’s engine is enforced with a Rover-8005 combat engine, making it extremely agile. The primary weapon on this vehicle is a 20kMhz Electro Discharge Shogata Cannon. The weapon can defeat light armor with extreme ease and given time, it can eventually penetrate heavier armor also. Because of the Hugh G4 tracking unit, it can also engage air units. Armored with heavy polysteel15 plates, the sculptor is an extremely dangerous units to hostile infantry.

01/MAT-3 Main Battle Hoverdyne “Lynx”
The Lynx have good speed and armor, making it an excellent hoverdyne for heavy combat. Its turret mounts a Shogata PDX9 “Messenger”, the latest version of our very first energy weapon. The Lynx can go toe to toe with any modern tank and pose a significant threat to any ground unit. Armored with heavy polysteel20 shockplates it can withstand a great deal of punishment before collapsing.

01/WL8 Heavy Hoverdyne “Volans”
The massive Volans is one of the largest hoverdynes available today. Nicknamed “God’s Might” it strikes fear into hearts of enemy forces. To command a Volans is an honor only given to the best crews in the Corporation. This hoverdyne carries a twin mounted Shogata PDX9 cannon, providing it with supreme firepower. Unfortunately, the rechare time for this dual weapon is relatively slow.

012/BT-MV Mk. II Beam Platform “Lacerta”
The Lacerta is a three crew hoverdyne platform, armed with an experimental beam cannon. This cannon is a modified version of the Shogata. It is meant to shoot beam of concentrated energy through a specially designed prism. This prism, named the X9k Purifier, is still extremely experimental and is connected with an advanced GTI targeting system. Both the platform and the weapon are still highly experimental, so the corporation is reluctant to deploy it in direct combat. The coming years, it will only be used when there is no other choice,

01/AAPBT-600 Anti-Air Hoverdyne “Pavo”
The Pavo has only one purpose: to destroy enemy airborne units. It carries a modified Shogata FUR/X9 weapon system that shoots energy at enemy craft at amazing speed and accuracy. The Pavo proofs to be extremely efficient, except in desert regions. The huge cooling system needed to keep the weapon going hampers in conditions of extreme heat. Also, the Pavo has relatively light armor, comparable with the Sculptor.

04/DN9-FO OAH Artillery Hoveredyne “Sagitta”
The Sagitta is a mobile artillery piece, designed at the same time as the Pavo. It’s primary weapon is a BPPL-12 Shogata ejector. It lobs overpacked and unstable proton particle clusters in a high ballistic arc towards the target. Upon impact, this results in an enormous energy discharge. A powerfull isonisation field is a side-effect of this blast, damaging all electrical systems nearby. Even though it is armed with polysteel20 platings, the Sagitta requires heavy hoverdyne escorts. Also, frequent maintenance and high upkeep expenses are necessary.

011/BEHCCA Drone Carrier “Orion”
The Orion is a support hoverdyne designed to stay in the background of combat encounters. The hoverdyne carries an extensive crew of six and is packed with large numbers of GHE Spider Drones, which we have presented to the public a few years ago. The Orion relies on information from its targeting computers and other friendly units to lock on a target. After that, Drones are released and head for the target to blow it to pieces. As stated in other press releases, the only weakness of this system is the problems it seems to have with targeting infantry.

Terradynes

CLSV-122 FSV Scout Terradyne “Locust”
The CLSV-112 FSV is mainly meant for fast attack or scouting missions. The locust outruns most other military vehicles as it is designed with speed and stealth in mind. This vehicle is the eyes and ears of the Vortex military. It's main drawback is it's light armor, polysteel-15 plating only designed to absorb small fire arms and shrapnel.
The locust is armed with the WelbySimms HePeX-932 Cutter, the best machine gun available to us today, including a brand new GTI-targeting system.

CT-917 FST Light Terradyne “Jackal”
The CT-917 FST light terradyne is mainly used for fast attack and seek & destroy missions. It has a coaxial weapons mount, allowing it to target ground and air units. It is powered by a Piranha 4-4 SlugDrive.
Its turret is fitted with a servo contraption allowing fast rotation of the WelbySimms Cor 13-1.50 AC autocannon. The weaponry can shred infantry and light armor to pieces and given time, it can take out heavier opponents as well. The light terradyne can also be equipped with deployable Marduk GS-5 Sentry Guns. These guns come in three models, namely "Autocannon", "Rocket" and "Anti-Air".

SFB-209 AAT Main Battle Terradyne “Wolf”
The SFB-209 AAT Wolf excels at offensive maneuvres. It's main weapon is a Reinhart LAK4-150mm Storm. This large caliber gun is considered most efficient and accurate, firing fin-stabilized sabot rounds. The barrel carries extended recoil absorbers and Tak2 coils that give the gunner full control of the gun.
The Wolf is armored with B-25 Titanium shockplates, capable of substanding the most heavy enemy fire. The only weakness of the Wolf is that it is completely defenseless against airborn targets.

DTT-1203 Siege Terradyne “Grizzly”
This is the heaviest tank deployed by Vortex Corp. It is a technological marvel with its twin Zephrim SlugDrive engine capable of generating enough energy to move this 113 ton titanium-alloy hulk. The Grizzly is mainly deployed in siege situations to tear apart structures and turrets. It's primary armament is the double-barreled 120mm MT-LCGx2. The new Welby-Simms ShellLoader2000x is capable to feed the gun without any jamming risks whatsoever. However, this heavy weaponry prohibits the Grizzly from taking part in stealth missions, since the muzzle flames would easily give its position away.

DTA-266 AMRLT Rocket Terradyne “Firecracker”
The DTA-266 AMRLT, capable of devastating both ground and air units. It is armed with OSI-L2 Hurricane Air Defense Anti Tank Missile system. The TrueSight targeting system and the Neural Uplink insure maximum accuracy and rate of fire. The launched missiles lock on to the target's alpha emissions, gaining a homing effect. Unfortunately, humans do not emit enough alpha emissions to achieve a lock-on. The Firecracker has relatively light armor (Meshed H2 plates). It is therefore vulnerable to all sorts of piercing enemy projectiles. It should therefore always be deployed behind Grizzly or Wolf elements, or better yet: some hoverdynes.

APF-311 MAAG Anti-Air Terradyne “Ocelot”
The Ocelot, manufactured by Vortex Steel, is designed for the single purpose of taking out enemy airborne forces. Depending heavily on computer and radar capabilities, a weakness of the Ocelot lies in enemy EW tactics. When the onboard radar picks up a potential target, it automatically swings the turret and barrel to the correct firing angle, leaving the gunner with the single task to press the fire button of the Hugh 75,, 2xAC Air Defense Cannon.

APP-671 CAT Artillery Terradyne “Hog”
The Hog is a mobile piece of artillery, firing ballistic artillery grenades. It works best when targeting data is relayed to it by forward observers, after which it can lay down a deadly barrage. Armed with a large caliber Howitzer, the Hog uses 6 rotating barrels, a fully automatic breech block and hydro-pneumatic recoil systems to allow for a high rate of fire. Its unique cooling system avoids overheating problems during extreme combat conditions. The heavy polysteel-20 armor on this unit makes it extremely durable, but all the equipment and weaponry limits the speeds of the HOG to a slow crawl.

Battlemechs

Raven
A light assault ‘mech, initially an experiment to create a walker unit for Corporate police forces. Now, the Raven carries sophisticated mobile sensor and electronic equipment, making it the ideal unit for reconnaisance and surveillance.

Osiris
The Osiris is the lightest ‘mech that the Corporation deploys, yet also the fastest. Strategical doctrine gives it roles in urban warfare, as well as in fast attack missions. In practice, the Osiris is often used to patrol and guard perimeters in areas regarded as very safe and serene. This is also why many rookies find an Osiris to be their first battlemech.

Cougar
Armed with both heavy laser weapons and long range missile systems, the Cougar is the unit for hit and run attacks on heavier targets. Controlled by the most hotheaded of pilots, Cougars are known for their tendency to engage larger targets in small packs of extremely maneuverable units.

Bushwacker
The Bushwacker is a medium-sized ‘Mech, based on schematics bought from Diablo_NL, commonly used to guard TVC borders in the colonies. The Bushwacker is mainly armed with missile weapons.

Shadow Cat
Usually used for heavy recon missions, the Shadow Cat is deadly in any capacity. More and more often, this unit is used to guard the flanks of heavier battlemechs in combat, as well as in situations where it co-operates with hoverdynes and terradynes.

Chimera
The Chimera is a medium ‘Mech, designed as a general-purpose unit. It is hardly used, because there is no niche to fill among the other ‘mechs in its class. It is mostly seen in the private policing forces of the conglomerates.

Hellspawn
A general-purpose ‘mech, but with an unusual high degree of speed and agility, especially for it class. Armed with both energy and ballistic weaponry, the Hellspawn is a welcome addition to almost any combat situation on short or medium range.

Uziel
Maneuverability, combined with good firepower and armor, the Uziel is a good performer in any role. A tactic used often is to deploy fast lances of Uziels, supported by assault aerodynes to penetrate enemy lines, make a full turn and attack the enemy from behind.

Catapult
This heavy battlemech is intended for second-line defense, yet also has great offensive potential. Armed with several long range missile launcher, it is most effective when firing at the largest possible range.

Loki
Medium lasers, scatter autocannons and short range missile weapons make the Loki the battlemech equivalent of a SWAT unit. Designed to be dropped into a combat situation, get close, and deliver a hard hitting punch, the Loki is a feared ‘mech in any situation.

Mad Cat
The Mad Cat is the standard ‘Mech, found in every single regiment. Good at any range, it is often the backbone of security forces, though that role is being taken over by more expensive and modern ‘mechs the last few years.

Nova Cat
Nova Cat’s standard configuration gives it awesome, long range firepower. Armed with large lasers, PPC weaponry and pulse lasers, the Nova Cat is often nicknamed ‘the lightsaber’ by Battlemech pilots. Its disadvantage lies in the fact that it tends to overheat swiftly, forcing the pilot to be very aware of the danger of suddenly standing still in the middle of a battle.

Thor
Often compared with the Loki, the Thor offers mobility and short- to medium-range firing capability. It is seen as a succesfull blend of firepower and capability.

Vulture
This heavy ‘mech serves mostly as fire support with its long-range missiles firing from long distance. When things get up close and personal, it carries a dual large pulse laser to fend of enemy forces.

Argus
The Argus carries a good balance between missile, beam and ballistic weapons, and is the lightest of all assault ‘mechs available. It is often seen working alongside elements of infantry and terradynes, and then mostly in offensive combat situations.

Thanatos
The Thanatos is another general-purpose ‘mech that could adequately fill any role, save that of scout. The last few years, it has found a niche as the command ‘Mech in reserve units. In this role, it can jump into the battlefield and make a difference any time, anywhere.

Atlas
The Atlas is big, intimidating, bad, and carries more weaponry than one would consider healthy. The appearance of the unit and its weapons create the perfect combination of funtion and fear factor.

Awesome
One of the most feared units in the ground forces of TVC, the Awesome is often seen in both offensive and defensive situations, usually being responsible for the important areas of the perimeter.

Daishi
Daishi as a name means ‘great death’. One of the biggest and heaviest ‘mechs existing, it carries huge amounts of firepower compromised of lasers, autocannons and other weaponry.

Mauler
What is lacks in subtlty, the Mauler makes up for in brute force. Armed with medium lasers, four autocannons and dual LRM launchers, it can take on almost any enemy unit. As a battlemech, the Mauler is often piloted by the commanding officers of lances, and is mostly deployed in open-field situations.

Mad Cat Mk. II
Larger and more powerful than the original Mad Cat, the Mk. II is armed with long range missiles, gauss cannons and some smaller laser weapons, often allowing it to take out enemy units with a single shot from each weapon at once.

Aerodynes

AV/U-122 LSA Scout Aerodyne “Hawk”
The Hawk is used for deep scout missions as well as low-threat patrols. The Hawk is equipped with advanced sensors, both passive and active, allowing it to routinely relay its information to the nearest BattleSat in orbit, which in addition to its high flying altitude makes it the best scout unit in the military. Lightly armed and armored, the Hawk is not suited for combat at all, and generally will use its stealth to sneak up on enemies and deliver a hit-and-run blow. The Hawk is armed with a 20mm Chaingun pod, and armored with VonTec 451-3 Stealth plates, emphasizing its low target profile.

AV/U-309 HAA Attack Aerodyne “Vulture”
The Vulture is a very effective tank busting unit, with its primary purpose being to break armored ground targets. A favorite tactic amongst Vulture commanders is to circle the enemy and attack from behind, where he least expects it and where armor is often weaker. It is armed with W-T SR-II Mosquito missiles, which is a good aerodyne mounted rocket, considering its light weight, high impact and advanced targeting system. The Vulture is often seen defending ground units with relatively weak armor, such as Vulture Battlemechs, Catapults, Lacerta beam platforms and HOG artillery.

AV/F-1001 FA Fighter Aerodynes “Delta”
The AV/F-1001 FA Delta, powered by two SecAmp fusion engines, is able to pull of amazing maneuvres at low altitude. The one-manned fighter is equipped with an extremely advanced computer system, directly linked with the pilot. It feeds the pilot with detailled topology data and vector plans. The system also regulates all pressure and stimulants the pilot needs. The Delta is armed with N69-PDU GLORY missiles, capable of taking out enemy craft in a heartbeat. The main drawback of the Delta is it lacks the capability of targeting ground units. This will be the function of the future Vulture aerodyne.

AV/U-45 SRBA Bomber Aerodyne “Condor”
The mere sight of the Paktu designed Condor aerodyne strikes fear into the enemy as it is loaded with 8000 kilo’s of pure destruction in the shape of bombs and heavy guided missiles. Typically, the Condor is deployed in combat regions with a heavy escort, relying on the guard craft for both protection and target identification. The Condor can be armed with HE bombs, Tactical Nuclear Bombs and Fragmentation Missiles, each of them able to level large areas of terrain in seconds.

Orbital Forces

Scout
Scouts are little more than a powerful engine strapped to the smallest cockpit in the fleet. Besides being excellent intelligence platforms, Scouts are often used to harass noncombat vessels, though this should be viewed as more of a psy-op role than an effective way of punching holes in hulls. The Scout has a superior sensor range and can detect cloaked ships within a certain range. Scouts depend on speed and maneuverability to evade enemy fire when attacked.

Interceptor
A fast, maneuverable and versatile craft designed for patrol, escort, and Cap Ship defense. The Interceptor is the smallest hull type that features offensive strike capabilities. Speed and maneuverability are maximized; thin armor plating covers only critical systems. The Interceptor is especially feared by non-combat vessels, other strike craft, and resource operations.

Bomber
The Bomber is a deadly combination of maneuverability and destructive firepower. The twin fusion bomb launchers release highly volatile bottled plasma that burns through hull plating, ignites munitions stores, and overloads control systems.

Gunship
The Gunship’s twin turrets are kinetic weapons, firing slugs at extremely high speeds. While most Cap Ship armor can turn this fire away, strike craft are torn to shreds. The Gunship provides close range anti-fighter support in both offensive and defensive roles. Although heavily armored for its class, the Gunship Corvette is vulnerable to Frigates and other Capital Ships.

Pulsar Gunship
The Pulsar Gunship utilizes a short wave Ion Beam cannon, dubbed the Pulsar by S’Jet scientists, as its main weapon. What it lacks in power it makes up in size, rate of fire, and coverage. Mounted on the Gunship chassis, the pulsar turret has 360 degrees of coverage, allowing it to target Corvettes effectively. The Pulsar is also powerful enough to punch through Frigate armor.

Minelayer
A well-armored Corvette with a payload of magnetic shaped-charge mines. The Minelayer lays mines in a grid pattern by moving to a point in space and releasing a mine in that location.

Flak Frigate The typical ship-of-the-line used as a picket ship in defensive operations and the workhorse of any assault. The Flak Frigate combines adequate speed, armor, and firepower to deal with almost any situation. Alone, it is vulnerable to Fighters and other Frigates. In a Squadron or Strike Force, it is more then a match for Corvettes, Fighters, and even heavier Capital Ships.

Ion Frigate
The result of early research into heavy orbital weaponry was the Firelance class of frigate, whose only real combat function is to deliver the incredible damage potential of the Ion Cannon to the battle. There are few sights more terrifying to the enemy than one of their ships caught in a web of flaring ruby beams.

Marine Frigate
Originally a modified cargo transport, the Marine Frigate has evolved into a fast, highly armored delivery vehicle used to insert Hiigaran Marines into hostile ships. The Marines are highly trained in raiding, disabling, and gaining control of enemy vessels. Given enough time they’ve been known to gain control of Mothership class assets, giving their enemies a very nasty surprise.

Field Frigate
The Hiigarans have withstood incredible odds on many occasions thanks to this frigate. Generating an intense localized magnetic field, the Defense Field Frigate is able to turn away most weapon fire from ships within its protective sphere. The power signature of this field is so high that it can only be used for short periods of time.

Torpedo Frigate
This multi-purpose Frigate is a devastatingly effective addition to any strike group hunting Capital class ships. It fires two medium-range homing torpedoes which can be outfitted as either the standard Corvette-killing cluster torpedo or the more powerful Capital Ship torpedo.

Support Frigate
The support frigate is heavily armored and packs a medium rail-gun turret. While utterly inadequate for offensive work - unless there is a desperate need for every last gun - these vessels are well enough protected to hang in the middle of intense fleet actions, repairing and refitting strike craft of all kinds.

Destroyer
Sleek, deadly, and designed to take a beating, the Destroyer is in every sense a heavy-hitter. Turning broadside to its target, the Destroyer unleashes its four heavy cannons and twin Capital Ship torpedo launchers in a withering attack few ships can withstand for long.

Battlecruiser
The largest combat ship in the navy, the Battlecruiser has two long range Heavy Ion Beam turrets. These weapon systems allow the Battlecruiser to engage targets at extreme distances, making it a deadly foe for most capital class ships. A complement of four pulsar turrets and four kinetic burst cannons enable the Battlecruiser to engage strike craft intent on disabling key command, propulsion, or weapons subsystems. With proper frigate and corvette support, the Battlecruiser is the heavy-hitter of many fleet engagements.

Carrier
The Carrier is perhaps the most versatile ship in the Fleet. Properly outfitted, it can build and repair Fighters, Corvettes, Frigates, and Resource class ships. The Carrier can store several strike craft squadrons, and is very effective as a mobile resource drop-off point.

Mobile Refinery
This Frigate-sized vessel can be deployed close to resourcing operations. Adding two new drop-off slots to any operation, it tends to greatly decrease resourcing lead times.

Resource Collector
The Collector is a vessel roughly the size of a Corvette. It has arms to grab various types of materials that can be turned into raw working materials when dropped off at a refinery station. When upgraded the collector can perform repairs on Frigate and Capital Class ships and as such is an essential part of any combat fleet.

Probe
Probes are unmanned long-range sensor devices. They consist mainly of an engine, monitoring equipment, and several stealth plates to keep them out of sight of enemy ships. Probe signatures are regularly revealed to allies, to prevent them from shooting down the ‘unidentified objects’, for which they are sometimes mistaken.

Gun Platform
This single shot robotic sentry is a cheap and effective deterrent to both raiders and larger enemy forces. Once deployed it cannot be moved again, unless towed away by another vessel.

Ion Platform
A more advanced version of the gun platform, the Ion Beam platform unleashes four high-energy ion beams at any Frigate or Capital Ship within range. Once deployed it cannot be moved again, unless towed by other vessels.

Explorers
Explorer vessels are designed and constructed by the Somtaaw. They are larger than carriers, and often used in situations that require deep space exploration, or in mining operations. The strength of the Explorer is its modular design, allowing for modules to be added or removed for each new mission.

Inhibitors
Inhibitors are designed for only two purposes: to prevent ships from entering hyperspace, and to prevent ships in hyperspace from coming out near the inhibitor. These ships consist of a bridge, engine, inhibitor system and a huge amount of armor, and nothing else.

Supply vessels
Supply vessels refer to the huge array of civilian vessels used to supply ships and to keep the trade between different TVC holdings across space in smooth transition. No standard model exists, instead each Kiith uses a large variety of ships, most of them produced at either the Stratos or Sajuuk shipyards.

Technology

Here follows a description of some of the key technologies developed by and / or used in the Corporation.

Zephrim Engines

The backbone of the entire vehicle related industry is formed by the Zephrim Engine. Hoverdynes, both military and civilian ones, are practically omnipresent in the Corporate territories, and each of them is powered by Zephrim systems. For the last few years, the hovering effect created by Zephrim engines have also started filling niches in elevator technology, construction, medical appliances and even in the entertainment sector. Originally, the Zephrim engine was created after scientists started research into the design of an antimagnetic vehicle, later named the hoverdyne. After years of experimentation, the Mk. IV Durkfire Zephrim Advanced AntiMag Engine was presented to the Kiithid. It featured four titanium plated outlets, with the back turbines providing momentum and the two front outlets controlling the direction. Basicly, the Zephrim engine is slightly superiour to normal fusion reactors, yet is not as powerful as hypermatter based models. However, the choice not to use hypermatter was deliberately made, with regards to the unstability of such engines.
The early Zephrim engines were quite fragile, and therefore completely unsuitable to be deployed in combat situations. Later, more advanced Polysteel plating and advanced cooling technology ensured that the hoverdyne would become a feared opponent on any battlefield. Hoverdynes have more speed, agility and firepower than normal armored units, though the trade-off is that they carry slightly less armor, and that they feature higher upkeep costs. Because the Zephrim engine is considered both an economic and military core competency, Council has made sure that technicians have implemented systems in hoverdynes to prevent them from falling into enemy hands. In practice, this means each hoverdyne has a self destruction system that can be accessed and initiated by its pilot at any desired time, if the situation calls for it.

Shogata Weaponry

Simultaneously with the development of hoverdyne technology, the old High Council authorized extensive research into energy weaponry. Initially, the projects had little succes, but when blueprints and schedules were purchased from WTE allies such as the FTR and Menelmacar, research started showing promising developments. The leading facility in the process, the Shogata facility, was the first to reach the crucial breakthroughs, and now the name Shogata is used to refer to an extensive family of energy weapons, including Ion, Laser, Plasma and other weapons. The very first model of energy weapon was a laser cannon based on the THEL. The THEL mixes deuterium (a form of hydrogen) with fluorine to create deuterium fluoride, generating an intense burst of infrared radiation in the process. Further research in this field eventually lead to energy weapons that could be mounted on hoverdynes, making them extremely deadly. A fairly new weapon is the Shogata-PDX9. The weapons’ internal fusion reactor heats particles into plasma, after which it is accelerated out of a specially designed barrel onto the target. Later research projects, with the help of the Somtaaw nation, resulted in Ion weaponry, also further developed at the Shogata institute. Until this day, the Shogata family of weaponry still makes up for the largest part of hoverdyne and orbital weaponry in the Corporation. The latest development of Shogata was the ‘Defiance’ ejector system for the Sagitta artillery hoverdyne. The weapon, code name BPPL-12m lobs overpacked and unstable proton particle clusters in a high ballistic arc towards the target. Upon impact, the Schröedinger repulsor field generators are disabled, creating an enormous energy discharge. The heat and energy of such an explosion are deadly in their own right, and the sub-particle emissions of the blast cause electrons of atmospheric molecules in the surrounding area to be literally stripped off. This causes an ionization field that wreaks havoc with all surrounding electronic equipment. The dissipation of this ionization field, however presents the most significant effect, leading to recombination-independent photogeneration which emits enough energetic protons to literally reduce armor to molten slag.

Neural Uplinks

Neural Uplinks represent a significant military advantage in speed, accuracy and responsiveness for Corporate units. Developed decades ago, NU technology allows subjects to be literally connected to pieces of machinery, through a direct connection with the spinal cortex. Using this technology, it allows Corporare employees to control their equipment with almost no delay whatsoever and increased efficiency. Data can be directly ‘read’, without the need to make an extensive analysis first. Soldiers piloting hoverdynes and terradynes are directly linked to their targeting and fire control systems, allowing for increased accuracy and better rate of fire. The most complicated Neural Uplink systems even allow pilots to be implemented in space ships as their living cores. This technique allows a single pilot to function as a central computer, processing huge amounts of information at the same time, and making complicated decisions and calculations. These living cores have proved much more efficient and reliable than computers, and are now in common use on board of any space ship exceeding the size of a frigate. Another example of Neural Uplink technology, it is the technology used in the creation of Council. Instead of linking man with machine, it was used to link twelve minds into the body of one, and to the supporting equipment designed to keep the original bodies as well as the host alive. Now, Council can make complicated decisions at amazing speed, analysing any alternative outcome she can foresee in mere seconds. One thing needs be said about Neural Uplink technology. It has been found that a two way connection can result in some…strange phenomena. If the machine or computer is also able to influence the human subject, instead of a mere one way direction in which the person involved receives data and acts, the human mind can be damaged. Therefore, strict laws and regulations relate to Neural Uplinks, but their are cheap surgical treatments available on the black market, for those who cannot afford a legal procedure of implementing Uplink ports and wish to take their chances.

Gate technology

Fifteen years ago, a science team researching the big bang phenomena, discovered something unexpected. They uncovered that at the big bang, waves of radiation were sent out through reality, much like the ripples of water after a stone is dropped in it. When trying to record these waves, nicknamed W-waves, they discovered a second group of waves, much resembling the light that radiates from the sun: vertical beams that have their origin in the exact center of the galaxy. Surprisingly, they found that both groups of radiation carried the exact same signature and crossed each other at countless locations. A rudimentary mapping of this radiating showed the gathered scientists an image that strongly resembled a spiders' web. Immediately, the science teams saw a chance. If they could somehow find out how to "ride" these waves, how to send matter along their lines, the ultimate transport system would have been born. And after thirteen years of research, that succeeded. This project, "W", was so topsecret that even the White Asem facilities were not informed of it. A whole new research facility was constructed with B-type spider Drones, deep in the mountains. However, we can present you with the working of the process this day. The nature of the W-weaves causes them to form up in tunnel-like shapes. When hyperspace technology was used to "enter" these tunnels, the first results started becoming visible. A simple piece of steel was sent through the waves, from the facility to a second classified location. It worked, even though the steel came out with such extreme speed that it decapitated one of the scientists waiting at the other end. Over the last years, this technology was perfected. First, a piece of steel was sent through succesfully, with a normal speed and without getting scratches and other damage on it. Then, various objects at once were sent thourgh and eventually lab animals. Later, the first humans were sent through. The only noticable effect that the travel had on them was a severe headache that lasted 1-3 days, depending on the age and fitness of the person.

Spider Drones

The Spider Drones are the many models of semi-independent drones that the Conglomerates produce and use in their daily activities. Used for transport, construction, defence and other purposes, these drones are becoming almost as important to Corporate society as the Zephrim drive. Exactly because of this, Spider Drones are forbidden to posses any form of AI. Though they can be pre-programmed to perform certain functions for several weeks of time, reacting in interactive manner to changes in their environment, the Drones cannot think fully for themselves. It is often the case that one command hoverdyne or vessel controls a large amount, or ‘batch’, of pre-programmed drones, monitoring their behaviour and adjusting it when necessary. Several conglomerates in the Corporation manufacture the Drones, resulting in a huge variety of choice for potential customers. They range from very tiny models, used to assist surgeons, to huge hulks that are deployed in deep space mining and construction operations. Using the most advanced technologies and knowledge in fusion technology, metallurgy and hydraulics, the Spider Drones are able to perform almost any operation. Civilian uses of the Drones include construction and transport, while the military uses them as suicide infantry units and for special deep space combat actions. Two of the most used Spider Drones are the Miner and the Leech.

The Spider Miner drone is the most common mining drone in use today. It is manufactured by the industry giant Ishukone and is readily available throughout the world. It is not the best mining drone out there, but it is cheap and reliable, which explains it's success. The Spider Miner uses cheap laser technology to accomplish its task. The laser beam fulfills three essential tasks: extraction, transport and classfication of minerals. First of all it vaporizes the minerals on the surface of the asteroids where they form a charged plasma gas. Secondly, the laser beam itself is shaped as a cylindrical beam. By pulsating the laser amplitude, a rotating magnetic field is induced on the cylindrical surface. This acts as a 'screw' shaped magnet on the plasma particles, that get sucked up inside the cylindrical laser tube. Due to the different mass/charge ration of the atoms, the particle beam then gets splitted, like a ray of light through a prism. This enables the drone to sort and accumulate the different minerals. Obviously, a lot of the vaporized minerals actually fall outside the beam and are thus wasted, but the benefits and ease of use of the drone outweights this waste for most practical purposes. The spider miner is agile and has a good range, allowing the controller to travel up to a few kilometers (depending on the density of the asteroid field) and still recall it. Experienced miners frequently use two or more mining drone teams at once, allowing them to leapfrog from one asteroid to the next, constantly scanning for suitable asteroids to mine while his teams are busy carving up another one somewhere else.

The Leech is the most sophisticated drone in the Vortex fleet, and is designed to get in and heavily damage enemy ships in situations where a conventional attack craft would be destroyed in seconds. Able to evade all conventional sensors, the Leech can come right up to an enemy vessel and clamp on. The drone is unarmed except for a payload of molecular acid, which it uses to bore through enemy hulls so that it can access the plasma-drive conduits. Once bonded to the enemy ship, the Leech uses the ship's own drive plasma to melt through the hull, damaging it slowly. Meanwhile, the Leech's AI infiltrates the enemy ship's systems and relays false messages, silencing damage alarms and repair routines; in general, the crew of an enemy vessel doesn't realize anything is wrong until it is too late.

Terraforming

Terraforming is a process of planetary engineering, specifically directed at enhancing the capacity of an extraterrestrial planetary environment to support life. The ultimate in terraforming is creation of uncontained planetary biospheres emulating all the functions of the biosphere of the Earth---one that would is fully habitable for human beings. For years and years now, the Vortex Corporation has performed these services for itself and many foreign customers, with the newest project probably being the Coreworld project of the WTE. The earliest biological stage in a terraforming process is known as ecopoiesis, a term coined from the Greek roots ‘oikos’, an abode, house or dwelling place, and ‘poiesis’, a fabrication or production. It is defined as the fabrication of an uncontained, anaerobic, biosphere on the surface of a sterile planet. As such, it can represent an end in itself or be the initial stage in a more lengthy process of terraforming. Unfortunately, ecopoiesis cannot be carried out spontaneously–in the sense that no known biota can simply be emplaced and expected to thrive on any random planet surfance. A modicum of environmental modification will be required to create the Precambrian-like conditions needed for even the hardiest of extremophiles to take planets as their new home. This initial planetary engineering, leading to ecopoiesis, has been the focus of most terraforming-related research. After the development of technologies that would allow so, TVC split up its terraforming services into two different branches. The first consists of firms offering the altering of surfaces and climatological circumstances in environments that are already habitable. This can be seen as the customizing of existing habitats. The second branche concentrates on terraforming ‘new’ areas, in the form of new worlds. Mostly, this is done in the form of creating Domed cities and habitats, since terraforming an entire world would require huge amounts of time and money. Extremely complicated equipment, calculations and drones, as well as the very best of engineers and supporting personnel are used by Terraforming companies to create new environments, making this industry a very interesting one.

Locations

New Dawn Religious Academy
This academy is meant to attract religious scholars and philosophers from all over the world to engage in debate, gather literature and bring new insights to religion and faith as a whole. The Vortex Corporation has invited all nations to send envoys, and is waiting to see if this project is a succes. Silently, the Corporation hopes that the New Dawn Academy will silence religious fundamentalists from protesting against the rapid technological developments in the region, which are driving people away from the church.

New Haven Academy
New Haven Academy is the oldest military structure in the Corporation. Normal personnel will never be trained here. Currently, it is where the Vortex Black Wolves and the Battlemages are trained. Situated in one of the few large natural areas of the Peninsula, the shining white academy, with it's huge blue banners and a surrounding environment filled with flora and fauna, is one of the most impressive places in our nation. Needless to say, the New Haven academy is owned and managed by Kiith Soban.

White Asem Research Facility
This facility has tighter security then any other base in our territories. Many secret military projects are started up and completed here. Already the scientists in this facility have delivered the HOG artillery, TacNukes, Tier7 turrets, aerodynes, terradynes, dropships, ion turrets, specialised combat suits and Zephrim Drives. Also, DLM cooperated with TVC here to develop the Wraith II. Current projects include advanced research into cloning and drone technologies.

Vishna
Most southern city in TVC and trade center and headquarters of Kiith Riif. It is here that one can find the fishing fleets of the Riif, a rare sight since Corporate inhabitants tend not to use water for anything but consumption and sports. Vishna is a city of 8 million inhabitants, and stretches out over the hills directly behind the line of dunes that separates it from the sea. Much like ancient Athens, Vishna has a separate harbor, connected to the city through a very large and wide road, which is filled with hoverdyne transport vehicles almost 24 hours per day.

Uthar
Capitol of The Vortex Corporation. The Daiamid Council and most Lower Councils are located in this city of 19 million inhabitants. The heart of the city is formed by the Council district, where the large skyscraper where Council resides forms the heart of all Corporate policital activity. One of the few locations permanently under battlemage surveillance, the Council district is considered the safest location in the Corporation. Kiithid Manaan, Paktu and S’Jet make up for most of the Utharian population, with a significant Kendarat minority that is growing fast.

The Domed Gardens
An attempt to recreate Eden, the DG is 50 square miles of indoor paradise. Created with early terraforming technology, it consists of several large domes, with an internal climate being regulated and maintained by advanced equipment, completely independent from the outside climate conditions. The Domed Gardens currently feature over half a million species of flora and fauna, gathered from the whole of Sisgardia and even further abroad. Recently, it has come under shared managament of Kiithid S’Jet and Draconis, both Kiithid making extensive used of the possibilities that the DG offer in research and nature studies.

The Oracle Dunes
The Oracle Dunes are a medium sized desert region within Vortex territory. Many strange creatures, most of them reptilian, are found here. The Vortex Defense Forces often use the Dunes as location for wargames and trials for new equipment. Legends go that giant monoliths dive out of the sands every now and then, but those have never been confirmed. However, the persistent stories that are told throughout the Corporation do motivate an expedition to go and seek the monoliths every few years. Until this day, nothing has been found.

Sajuuk and Stratos
Two shipyards of the Aurora variant, Sajuuk and Stratos produce 1 fleet each month, consisting of several dozens of capital ships, supported by hundreds of fighters and corvettes. Sajuuk is situated inside the Void found behind the Hyperspace Gate, an ancient relic of the First Race. Stratos was constructed years ago above the planet Kharak II, where the Vortex Corporation has large colonies. More reading on the shipyards can be found here (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=48042), here (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1353016) and here (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1498220). Also, reading on the development and construction of the Chimera fleet can be found here (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=75502) and here (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=77382).

The Hermes Facility
A facility constructed north east of the Corporate mainland, Hermes is a tax-free trading zone that provides cheap storage and transport of goods. Some 25 nations have offices here, and every day they enjoy trade with almost no tariffs, fast transport services and of course full protection by Corporate security personnel. The Hermes Facility is the base of operations for one of the biggest organizations in the VC: the Hermes Conglomerate.

The Colonies
The Vortex Corporation has established colonies in two different systems. The first were founded in the Kharakian System, on the world Kharak II, above which the Stratos shipyards are related. Initially, most inhabitants of the colony worked on the shipyards, or were naval personnel of the ships that were stationed in the system. Later, KII, as it is called by most of the population, started to develop itself as a trade center, being located near a very popular trading route through space. The second group of colonies, in the Caelum system, are not that lucky. Located in a somehwat isolated part of Space, they are still able to make a good profit, though. Not only does the system feature the massive Sajuuk shipyards, but it is also the home of several large Somtaaw mining operations and S’Jet research stations.

Allies and organizations

SFN

The SFN stands for Sisgardian Fellowship of Nations. Membership is possible only for nations located inside the Sisgardian region. Immediately after settling down in Sisgardia, The Vortex Corporation joined the SFN, and has been loyal to it ever since. On countless occassions, SFN allies have helped and assisted the Vortex Corporation, be that in technology, military or even humanitairan activities. Ranging from militaristic states to pacifists, and from socialists to capitalists, the SFN is a diverse, yet tight alliance of nations, intended to make the region of Sisgardia worth more than the simple sum of the regions that are in it. With members such as the Federated Technocratic Republics, Tarasovka, Der Angst, Diablo_NL, Celeborne, Cybrid, North West Antarctica, Zethkur and CairnTarra, the SFN is considered by Corporate officials to be TVC’s main alliance.

WTE

The WTE, or World Technological Entity, is an institute aimed at the technological development of the nations in it. It features both inner ( Sisgardian) and outer members, and all of them co-operate to achieve incredible technological progress. The goals of the WTE include free and open movement of scientific information among the members, shared technological developments, and WTE membership also implicitly means that no hostilities are allowed between WTE members. Literally dozens of technologies have been introduced within the WTE, exclusively available to its members and nobody else. It was this organization that made the fast technological developments of the Kiithid in the early days of TVC possible, and the Corporation still bears the fruit of the many projects and studies done with other WTE members.

SATO

SATO seems to be primarily a military alliance, with the intentions of mutual defense for all its members. The Vortex Corporation joined this organization only recently, after several international incidents that almost brought it into war. Council decided that strong allies were needed in order to avoid future conflict and bloodshed, and SATO was, at the time, seen as the most suitable alliance to join. After applying, TVC got quick support from DNL and several other nations, allowing for a fast transition into SATO ranks. The goals of SATO include mutual defense, giving humanitarian aid when needed, and the development of peaceful relations with other nations whenever possible.

SATO membership was terminated as of 14/02/04

Templar Alliance

Though many would consider the SFN the first alliance that TVC joined, such is not the case. The very first alliance of nations that the Vortex Corporation ever joined was the so-called Templar Alliance. This Alliance consists of Celeborne, the Vortex Corporation, as well as other unnamed signatories. Initially, the Templar Alliance was the leading body of the Group of 16, sixteen nations that worked together to control international politics behind the scenes. Rumors go that the 16 were almost responsible for a World War, which later occured anyway as a result of both actions of the 16 and other factors. After the betrayal of Abu-Dabi Khristata, the 16 were disbanded. However, the Templars continued in existance, though their influence on international incidents is now masked and more conceiled than ever before.

TA membership was terminated as of 14/02/04

Corporate Coalition

The Corporate Coalition is a body founded by the Vortex Corporation itself. With over 20 signatory nations, the Coalition initially showed great promise. However, soon after the CC was created, several prominent member states got involved in war in conflict, on some occassions even with each other. This, and other factors, has pushed the influence of the CC to the background, even though the free trade and sharing of information between members still accounts for many import and export profit made in the organization. As such, the CC remains a strictly economic alliance, allowing members to trade freely amongst each other, without having to care about the current political situation.

CC membership was terminated as of 14/02/04

The Grand Duchy of Tarasovka

The Grand Duchy of Tarasovka is the main ally of the Vortex Corporation, together with the republic of Celeborne. In almost any situation that TVC is involved in, the same also goes for Tarasovka. Contacts between the two nations have intensified over the years, to such a level that the Taraskovyan migrants have even been granted the privelege of their own Kiith. Together with Der Angst, the Grand Duchy and TVC are sometimes jokingly referred to as the ‘Evil Trio of the SFN’ by foreign governments, referring to the many occassions on which politicians from these SFN nations have managed to grasp political and economical advantage through smart and slick political behaviour.

The Celestial Republic of Celeborne

The Celestial Republic is the oldest ally of the Corporation. When the employees of the Corporation were still counted in numbers of thousands instead of millions, Celeborne already offered support and friendship to the Corporation. Breaking the ties with this nation is considered unthinkable and utterly impossible by the Kiithid, save for the Gaalsien. Fortunately, no sane politician tends to actually listen to the Gaalsien, which has ensured that ties with Celeborne are still strong. Just as is the case with Tarasovka, the soldiers of TVC are prepared to fight and die for Celeborne as much as they are willing to do so for their own nation. To exemplify this, teachers and speakers often refer to a single incident, involving the Celeborne Kali Strikeforce and the Vortex Black Wolf Special Forces. In the aftermath of an armed conflict in which both were involved, both elements ignored orders from their superiours, and decided to meet up instead. After doing so, they completed their mission objectives in half the expected time, and proceeded to have a barbecue in the middle of enemy territory, together with troops from the nation of Islamic Ummah, only to sneak out unharmed a few hours later. When one asks a Black Wolf operative if this story is fact or fiction, the usual answer is a faint smile and the proverbial “no comment”.

The Honourable Empire of Diablo_NL

Early on in the existance of the Corporation, ties were created with DNL. Over the years, both nations found they shared many mutual features, both in cultural and political schools of thought. Soon after the Vortex Corporation joined the SFN and WTE, interaction with Diablo_NL increased, for instance with the Vortex Corporation adopting a large range of Battlemech models into the military, each of them acquired from their DNL allies. As their name says, the DNL Empire places great emphasis on honour, which has gained them the respect of the more traditional Kiithid in the Corporation. Especially the Gaalsien and Nabaal seem to get along very well with the DNL denizens, which is remarkable, since the Gaalsien tend not to get along with anybody at all.

The Imperial Navy

When The Vortex Corporation was young, it joined a young alliance called the Imperial Alliance, or the IA. During this friendship, The Alliance went through a golden age, making more friends and allies wherever it went. Where war threatened negotiations were always tried first. If that failed, all members would gather together and fight the menace.

In the times of the Freeport Project, The Vortex Corporations space trade and tech increased tenfold, and ties with the Imperial Navy were never stronger. But this bliss ended in what is known as the Dark days of the Empire, where The Imperial Navy vanished from the International community for more than 20 years. When they returned, The Vortex Corporation decided that The Imperial Alliance was no longer profitable, and resigned. However, The Imperial Navy and The Vortex Corporation maintain a trade aggreement and general alliance to this day, as the days of the IA will never be forgotten.
