AMRD Headquarters, Arrio, Aequatio - With the passing of the Kinetic Energy Weapons Project Bill in the National Senate, Aequatian Military Research and Development has been working on Project Cougar/Jaguar to design the first generation of Space-Based Kinetic Energy Weapons for the Aequatian Republic Military Forces.
The project, a duel development, will create the high-density tungsten rods that are the weapon’s ammunition (Cougar) and the orbital platform and targeting systems (Jaguar).
The orbital platform will act as a large auto-loading rifle, which will be directed by other Aequatian satellites and a ground control facility in Aequatio. The rods will be fired by means of a magnetic accelerator and will use its own density and the Earth’s gravity to accelerate it further to provide it with better penetration for underground fortifications.
The solid tungsten rod (6 metres long, 30cm in diameter) will have an iron-alloy casing which will be removed once it is fired from the platform. With the satellite direction in the firing, the weapon is predicted to be accurate within 5 to 7.5 metres and could strike at speeds up to or greater than 3.7 kilometres per second, enough to destroy even hardened bunkers several stories underground.
Each platform will be designed to hold at least 50 rods and a total of 32 platforms will be built and placed in orbit. With this many weapons in orbit, ground forces have the ability to call upon any weapon in mere minutes for direct fire on targets such as hardened bunkers, important buildings and even enemy capital ships such as aircraft carriers and battleships.
Future plans include placing high explosive or sub-nuclear warheads on the rods to give them more of a destructive nature than simply penetration. As well, a smaller, anti-satellite version may be produced after the development of the larger, direct-fire platform.
This will be the third space-based system project by Aequatian Military Research and Development, the first being the immense Aequatian Satellite Communication and Surveillance System and the second being the Space-Based Laser Defence System.
The first testing of the weapon in the Black Sands Desert Testing Grounds are expected to be held within a few days, once the prototype weapons platform and its compliment of ammunition are launched by shuttle at the launch facility south of Arrio.
