Region Invasion

13-12-2003, 07:40
As nearly everyone is aware, numerous groups are in existance for the sole purpose of invading and taking over regions.

First off, this is not another "lets put a stop to region crashing" thread.

I am the democratically elected UN Delegate of the region Alpha Centauri. Most in my position, and a great deal of others loathe the practice of region crashing. I am one of the few who does not. Invasions happen in the real world between nations so they should also occur in the game. However, I do not feel that regional delegates/founders have enough in the way of defense.

The password protection option did provide a way to stop a given region from being invaded, however, it seriously hurts a regions growth. Most nations that are looking for a new home aren't going to want to send a telegram to the delegate of a locked region asking for the password and wait for a reply; they'll just go to a region that isn't locked. Some nations are willing to wait, maybe they've heard good things about a region, or they look at a region's message board and decide they would fit in well, or any other number of reasons. When a nation asks to join my region when I have a password up, I become a little suspicious of their motives, so at the very least I have to change the password everytime I let someone in. Still, when I have the password up, my region doesn't grow as much as it would without one. I'd rather not have to choose between growth and defense.

As to the purpose of this thread. I'm sure several people have ideas on how to improve the defense system. I created this thread to pring up and discuss these ideas, and hopefully come up with some that the administrators would be willing to add to the game. An idea I had was to create a third level of UN membership called "UN Representitive" or something, either based on endorsements or by the delegate appointing them, and allowing them to access regional control. It wouldn't be as effective as the password, but a region with four or five people that would be able to stop an invasion is a lot more effective than one (two if the region has a founder and delegate), and still allows growth.

Perhaps a kind of Regional Immigration Policy.

Maybe the Regional Leader could have a console that would have the following options:

- Accept no more than X number of new nations from any other Region:
- Exception 1: From Region 123, Y number of new nations are accepted:
- Exception 2: From Region 456, Z number of new nations are accepted:
- Create new Exception
- Check here to designate region of origin as ANY region that a given Nation has resided in.

* The first option on the console would be the basic suggestion I am putting forward.

* The exception options would be so that certain regions would be given a larger or a smaller quota.

* The last option I suggested for the console would be to prevent Nations who cannot go from Region 1 to Region 2, from going 1-->3-->2; this could be toggled on or off

* The numbers could be manipulated as the need was seen fit; for example if a quota of 5 was set and a nation wanted to get in, it would be refused but notified that a telegram was automatically sent to the region leader asking to increase the quota by 1. (and/or a telegram to other nations from the restricted region, who may want to swap with the restricted region.

Just my thoughts. I have no idea how we can get these ideas implemented. I can be reached at umpire@sympatico.ca for more discussion.

I don't think either method is perfect. They are both limited. Perhaps you could put this in the game section, offerign a suggestion for an improvement that would let regions have defence from region crashing while at the same time, permitting regional growth. Perhaps...advertising would be good... Or...talking to the mods to see if they can talk to the creator of the game to come up with a third option...

The only real way for a region to be crashed is when the new arrivals become delegate, they kick the person out. Simply put: if you don't want to risk having region crashing...

A) Don't give the UN delegate any kicking power!
B) Don't let UIN nations in at all!

Simple as that. The UN controls everybody inside it anyways. What would be the big loss if people were allowed to govern their nations outside of UN boundaries? NoNe!
