Westerburg Announces New Isolationist Policies

The SLAGLands
12-12-2003, 09:18
Good evening, my fellow SLAGLanders and citizens of the world stage.

In the past, The SLAGLands has prided itself on its strong sense of diplomacy and comraderie with our fellow nation-states. We have become the peacemakers, so to speak--the theoretical dove carrying the olive branch of peace. Through our strong allies within the Triumvirate of Yut, we have been able to grow and prosper as a nation and as a people.

As of late, however, growth and prosperity has begun to wane. SLAGLanders both within and without our government have noted the tension within the world reaching an all-time high. Even amongst our allies, we have noted this tension, punctuated largely by a grand sense of one-upmanship to which the Triumvirate of Yut seems to hold strong as of late. Recent polls among the SLAGLandic people have only confirmed that distrust, tension, and paranoia are reigning supreme on the international scene.

It is for this reason that I have placed the Formal Withdrawal Act before the Tricameral Legislature. The terms of this act are rather simple, but their impact is grand. In short, they are the following:

1. The SLAGLands shall withdraw from the Triumvirate of Yut, transferring all holdings on SLAGLand Titan to Earth-based SLAGLandic facilities.
2. The SLAGLands shall cease all alliances and treaties with all sovereign nations.
3. The SLAGLands shall allow for negotiations with foreign bodies only through private enterprise. No foreign power shall impose on the sovereign rights of The SLAGLands.
4. The SLAGLands shall enact a "wall of silence" policy, in which transmissions to the government of that nation shall be ignored or granted swift denial.
5. The SLAGLands shall maintain a standing army to protect her borders from the threat of invaders who would impose on her sovereignty.
6. The SLAGLands shall continue to honour free trade agreements with all powers with whom The SLAGLands shares a non-hostile stance.

In essence, the Formal Withdrawal Act will place the government of The SLAGLands in a state of sovereign isolationism--held to the will of her people and no one else.

I send my sincerest apologies to all of our friends and allies, and I hope you will realize that this act is for the best.

(OOC: In short... I'm taking a one-week break from at least the political aspects of roleplay. I'm entirely burnt out at this point. I'll update the Jukebox Charts tomorrow, and I'll try to continue to update them, but don't expect to see much from me after this point.

After the one-week period, I will formally announce if the Act has passed the legislature. If it has, consider this my formal withdrawal from NationStates.

It's been fun.)

ooc:- Instead of leaving nationstates altogehter, I suggest reducing the amount of time on it down to maybe 1 hour a day & go into semi-inactive modding (ie only using your powers when you personally see somthing wrong). You won't be able to stay away altogether because NS has entered your blood stream & boy is it addictive.

While we are sincerely saddened by this news, we steadfastly believe that in the end, the best solution will be found. Even if this act comes to pass, the Shogunate will regard the SLAGLands as our allies, and come to defend their shores against those that would threaten.

May the golden flames of chaos burn away the tangled webs of raw emotion, that one may look up the world with a clear eye and see the balance of all things, and with the seeing, understand.

Prior to the bill, The Tricameral Legislature is pleased to announce the passage of the *BUMP* Initiative, which would allow announcements to be heard by a wider worldwide audience.

OOC: If you do decide to leave, we'll miss you. But whatever choice you make, it will be what's best for you, and that's what's most important. There's no point in playing a game if you have grown tired of it.

The Ministry of Commerce, upon due consideration of the Formal Withdrawal Act, returns a vote of "NAY." This bill will hamper SLAGLandic international trade to the point at which depression may become inevitable. Prime Minister Westerburg, with all due respect, your first bill as Prime Minister of The SLAGLands strikes me as just a bit... bizarre.

The Ministry of Community, upon due consideration of the Formal Withdrawal Act, returns a vote of "NAY." While paranoia and distrust are running rampant in this day and age, cutting ourselves off from the world is not the solution; we must work with our neighbours instead of severing ourselves from them.

Prime Minister Westerburg's opinion, however, is duly noted.

The Ministry of Commons, upon due consideration of the Formal Withdrawal Act, returns a vote of "NAY." Such flagrant isolationism seems to me an obvious sign of a sense of aloof superiority, and this is not the sort of image The SLAGLands wishes to project. We are a free, peace-loving people, open to all of our friends and neighbours in the world. Isolationism is not the solution to our problems.

Upon being informed that The SLAGLands will remain in the international scene (although through limited means), Premier Bomfy's response was a simple smile and a thumbs up from his spot behind the mountain of government papers piled on his desk.
