The Christmas tree's roots were put down over 1000 years ago when a Christian saint set out to prevent the local pagans from worshipping an oak tree. To spite them, he chopped it down with his trusty old chopper.

He was amazed to find that a fir tree grew in its place, and believed it to be a miracle, when it was really down to them damned hippy pagans with their green tree ideas. Then, because the pagan hippies loved this tree so much, he cut it down as well, and put it on display, making the hippies put expensive gifts on and around it.

Since then, the trade in Christmas trees has really taken off, with dodgy street sellers selling Christmas trees in town centres, on road sides and off the backs of lorries. They’re an annoyance, and a nuisance, and they generally don’t have a licence. So the Roanian government is clamping down on vendors who push these trees, for the comfort of Christmas shoppers, by banning their sale. (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=101665)

Fines beginning at R$1,000 may be issued to anyone caught selling a tree, who may also be shot on sight, and buyers could be fined also. Anyone placing such a tree in their homes will have that tree confiscated, and receive either a fine or prison sentence, or be put up against the nearest tree and shot. A spokeswoman for Prince Alexander said “we have to clamp down hard on this. We usually pussyfoot around these issues, but to show people we do have strength and are a formidable government, we are being tough on this issue.”

The ban is due to be in place by tomorrow, and will run for a 7 month trial period. If the Roanian government receives a high enough revenue from fines, it will become a permanent ban.

Christmas trees don't have to be evergreens removed from the place they grew. For example, in Nianacio we leave the trees alive outside, and they're usually banana trees or mango trees or...

Alexander throws the paper aside. "She's back. You told me you had killed her!"

"Sorry, but you know how wombats are... she dug a hole, and we thought that would be an end to it..."
