Silent Death

ooc: with permission of GDt. worked out over msn

Location: The Sajuuk Gate, Caelum system

"Sir, we have transmission from Naval Intelligence coming in. They say it is urgent."

"Thank you, just relay it to my station"

Minutes later, Admiral Paktu stood up from behind the console. With a grim look on his face, he walked up to the center of the bridge, and asked his crew for attention. For a moment, all activity halted as all personnel turned their faces to look at their commander. With grim and determined voice, Paktu made his statement.

"Naval Intelligence has confirmed a possible conflict situation emerging, related to some of our allies. I judge it to be the proper course of action to prepare for intervention. Communications, send a message to Sajuuk command. I ask their permission to prepare the fleet for battle. Also, send a message to the Taraskovyan elements in the vicinity, and ask if they are willing to join us"

While messages started to be sent, received, and re-sent, the Corporate second fleet under the Admiral's command started forming up. Being the highest naval commander in the Corporation, the permission from Sajuuk command was nothing more than a formality. As the massive Battle Cruiser slided through space, frigates and destroyers powered up their engines, lighting up the blackness that surrounded them. Weapons slowly rotated around their axis as they were calibrated, and small shuttles and logistic vessels started hauling supplies and personnel to the warships.

"This is the TSFS Zvezda. We have received your request, and stand ready to stand side by side with the Corporation in battle. count us in."

"Admiral Paktu here, TSFS Zvezda. Thank you for your support. It is an honour to have you by our sides."

Minutes later, confirmation from Sajuuk control came in. From that moment on, the navigation beacons and customs vessels that guided the streams of merchant vessels started to clear a trajectory for the fleets. As civilian vessels evaded and changed course, the two fighter stations guarding the Sajuuk Gate started releasing streams of fighters and corvettes. On the larger ships in the fleet, as well as on the support frigates, hangar doors opened as the strike craft started to board their mother vessels.

"This is Admiral Paktu on board of the VCCV Karan to the Sajuuk shipyards. As a temporary addition to the fleet, I request the command over three hyperspace inhibitors. Please respond.

"Confirmed Admiral. They will be ready ASAP"

Half an hour later, the Sajuuk gate opened its impressive Iris. Through came two hyperspace inhibitors in broad formation, followed by the third one. Basicly, these ships consisted of an engine, hyperspace blocker, and a whole lot of armor. Pilots of other vessels often referred to them as "turtles", but despite that semi-mocking name, inhibitors had proven their use time after time again. Behind the third inhibitor, the Taraskovyan vessels came venturing through the gate. In all their might, they practically equalled the Second Fleet in might, numbers and firepower.

"This is Admiral Paktu to all TVC and GDT elements. Second Fleet and Taraskovyan flotilla both in position, and now to be referred to as "Silent Death" taskforce. Repeat: new callsign is Silent Death"

As the last few strike craft entered the hangar bays, the two TVC Battle Cruisers each opened a series of small hatches. The drones exiting from them were equipped with a small hyperspace module, as well as some monitoring equipment. Small hyperspace windows opened as the drones jumped to the target zone. There, they would be almost impossible to detect, with about the same signature as any other piece of space dust or debris.

Now, all that had to be done was wait.

"Sir, navigation reports that they have been succesful in calculating several possible courses to the emergency zone. Even if the situation changes, we'll probably still be able to jump in because we now have more than 1 jump alternative uploaded"

"Excellent"

In the past thirty minutes, three of the drones had made their way back to the Caelum system. Picked up quickly by Salvage corvettes, their data had immediately been copied and relayed to both the TVC and GDT flagship. Now, both commanders on both ships were staring at the images that confirmed the intelligence reports.

"Admiral Paktu to the TSFS Zvezda. I'm sure you have seen the same images that I am looking at right now. It looks like we might actually be of some use. What do you say about getting this show on the road?"

Later that day

Admiral Paktu had been called to one of the private holographic communication rooms. One of his officers had disturbed the serenity of his quarters by bursting in and announcing that Council desired a personal conversation with him. Initially, the Admiral had felt the urge to verbally abuse the intruder that had dared to invade his privacy. It was an old habit of him to spend the time before battle in contemplation, carefully reviewing every possible outcome of the upcoming events that he could imagine.

However, he quickly realized that killing the messenger was quite an outdated and useless concept. Instead of yelling at his subordinate, he straightened out his uniform and proceeded to the nearest elevator shaft. After a short trip to a higher deck, the doors opened in a hall that was nearly abandoned, save for the two marines guarding the door leading to the secure communications room. Arriving there, Admiral Paktu saw Council, or at least a holographic representation of her.

A young woman, with deep, penetrating eyes, subtly connected with equipment designed to enable her to house the twelve minds of council, plus her own. In a gracefull move, it seemed as if the statue of the woman approached the admiral. Even though it was a mere optical illusion, it did not miss its effect, as the admiral shortly bowed his head and made a formal greeting.

"Admiral, congratulations on your swift and just response. News travels fast, yet we have only just heared of this new incident."

"Thank you, Council."

"There is one thing we would like to request, though, if it does not endanger or compromise the strategy you intend to use in the battle, if it comes to that. The Knootian fleet that has left Sajuuk not long ago...some elements could be called back and added to your taskforce"

"That is....a good point. They have good firepower, and it will improve relations with Knootoss. Even the Knootians will benefit from it. I will arrange for it immediately"

"Thank you, admiral." With a smile and a wink, Council disappeared from the room. The original mind of Council was very intelligent and capable, yet also very spontaneous. Initially, tutors and mentors had desperately tried to get her tendency of being 'too friendly' to political allies and employees out of her systems. Later, when they realized her behaviour only had positive effects, they had decided to leave it as it was. After all, the twelve others that shared her body did not seem to have any objections...

~To Knootian Gravship Command Vessel~

As allies and friends, the Vortex Corporation asks for your help. A potential incident is developing in which we might need to interfere, and we request your help. The Grand Duchy of Tarasovka is already assisting us, and we would be honoured if you would follow the same course, by sending three of your cruisers, twelve of your frigates and perhaps even the command vessel back to the Sajuuk Gate.

Further information, including a description of the incident mentioned above, is included in the attachments and data files transmitted simultaneously with this message.

Signed,

Admiral Paktu
Commander of the 2nd TVC Fleet

-----------------------------
North Pole, Earth
-----------------------------

The wind was howling and blowing mercilessly over the roof of the earth. The snow was blowing in a large storm over the endlessly stretching icecaps of the pole. But though the wind howled the entire spectacle inspired some sort of serene uniqueness. This part of the pole was abandoned, no research stations, Sea Orcs or Santa-Clause hideouts were lost in the ongoing snowstorm. The raw power of nature at it’s best.

But the power of the storm was about to be disrupted by another power. Technological power, this time. Exactly 50 Melkorian-built gravships descended upon the Pole. While visibility was down to only a few metres, the thrumming of the engines was louder then the storm and the fiery light coming from the back of the ship melted the snowflakes passing it.

The fleet rearranged itself to get into a perfect box formation again after the decent into the atmosphere.

Aboard the flagship that had been redubbed ’Flame of Doom’ a message came in from afar. The Knootian admiral took it in his office, together with the captain of the battleship.

Commander of the 2nd TVC Fleet

“Well?”, the captain said with a questioning expression on his face. “Sending ships now would severely disrupt the efficiency of our operation here on the pole. And leaving again would draw as much attention as the lighting of Christmas three in our allies from New York!”

The admiral shook his head, disagreeing: “The corporation is our ally. Never forget that these very ships hid in their base for years. And now you would refuse them? I think not. Go tell your comm. officer that he has work to do. Most of the mercenary ships should still be in the system. Call them for towing, so we can get there faster. And have him sent an acknowledgement of their request. Captain Veermans can be put in charge of the operation here.”

Exactly eleven minutes later, the flame of doom took off and went up again to orbit, accompanied by three cruisers and twelve frigates. A similar number of mercenary ships hanging about in the sol system after having towed in the fleet began to converge on earth.

The remaining ships adapted their position to form a new box formation.

The Sajuuk Gate

One by one, the Knootian gravships entered normal space near the massive Gate. Flight control and its vessels had made sure an empty entry zone was available, and as merchant vessels continued their route along altered paths, gravships started entering the system. Answering the hailing signals from Taraskovyan and Vortex vessels, an answer was sent from the bridge of the Flame of Doom.

"This is Admiral Geraldsen on board of the Flame of Doom. We have received your message and are here to respond to the call. My command ship is followed by three cruisers and twelve frigates, all of them will be joining Silent Death taskforce"

"Roger that, Flame of Doom. Welcome back in the Caelum system. Please put your ships in formation behind the GDT and TVC vessels. When our jumpgates open, your vessels can just follow. Since this mission is not one for the public eye, please request your mercenaries not to accompany you"

Soon after, the mercenary ships were sent away, and the Knootian gravships slowly advanced until they had taken up the desired positions. Half an hour later, after TVC logistical vessels had brought additional supplies to the Knootian ships, a second message was relayed to the Flame of Doom.

"Flame of Doom, this is Sajuuk Gate Control. Our sweeps show minor traces of damage to the hull of one of your cruisers. We're sending some drones to take care of it, please allow them to do their work"

After the approval was received, several spider-like drones exited the hangars of a civilian carrier next to the Sajuuk Gate, making their way to the cruiser. After finding the right location, they commenced their duties, while the rest of the taskforce hung silently in space...
