ANN Special Report – “Rods from God”

Magna Casa, Aequatio - Aequatian Military Research and Development have gone to the National Senate in hopes to recieve funding for a program to develop Space-Based Kinetic Energy Weapons which could prove to be much more accurate than most of the GPS-guided munitions in use by the Air Force and have better penetration ability than the "bunker buster" guided bomb.

The several billion-Attan program would create tungsten rods which would be used as ammunition and the necessary platforms in orbit which would fire these towards targets on the surface.

The orbital platforms would be stocked with the tungsten rods (perhaps 6 metres long and 30 cm in diametre) which would be satellite-guided to targets anywhere on Earth within minutes. Theories place the weapon at being accurate within 5 to 7.5 metres and would strike at speeds of 3.7 kilometres per second or greater, enough to destroy even hardened bunkers several stories underground.

Skeptics who stand against the project say that space-based weaponry is nothing more than science fiction fantasy and do not make economic sense. However, the National Senate and the Premier's Office have gone into meetings to discuss the possible future of the development and deployment of these futuristic weapons.

From our national capital of Magna Casa in Aequatio, this is Guy Anderson reporting for Aequatian News Net.

Bump - No comments?

Not interesting enough? Lack of poll to express your opinion?

OOC: Interesting; so how are you going to launch and direct them?

Also, you realise that they won't be as destructive as an explosive-based weapon; they'd just blow a hole straight down and throw debris around any room they penitrated.

I'll launch them using shuttles and they will be re-stocked when needed by routine shuttle runs. As for directing them, they will be controlled from Central Command on the ground, and hopefully in the future, controlled directly by an orbital command centre.

It will be used as a purely tactical weapon, blow up a small target on the ground, crack bunkers which are protected by anti-air defences and sink enemy capital ships such as battleships and carriers by punching a hole right through them. (Rather than use cruise missiles and aircraft which can be shot down.) It's really just another way to keep our personnel safe while finding another way to kill "them".

I mean launch as in 'accelerate them to 3.7km/sec' and by 'direct' was reffering to in-flight course corrections and the ilk(or'd this be a 'dumb' weapon?).

The density of the tungsten rod will help it accelerate using the natural gravity of the Earth. As for directing the weapon, it will just be fired like a large sniper rifle, the rod being a simple bullet, once the weapon platform is directly over the target (which will be determined by other satellites) the weapon will fire a rod and that's that. Nothing too fancy.

ANN Special Report – “Yes on Rods from God Project”

Magna Casa - After lengthy meetings between the National Senate and the Premier's Office, a decision has been made and the Defence Department will provide funding for the venture. 35 billion Attans have been set aside of the military budget to fund the Space-Based Kinetic Energy Weapons Program.

Scientists, besides from celebrating, have begun work almost immediately on the weapon, with new offices and laboratories set up in Arrio, Aequatio and a gunnery training ground in the Western Desert for testing once the weapon is past the construction phase.

Although there are still skeptics to the weapon, there has been no official opposition to the passing of the Kinetic Energy Weapons Project Bill in the Senate.
