--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i would like to invite all regions in nationstates to take part at the upcoming "soccer world cup for regions".

this cup will be played with regional teams in stead of nations against nations.
the cup will be organized in the same way as a real cup, with qualification rounds, group stages and finaly knock-out rounds.

how do we count goals in a game?
it's easy, we look to both regions that play against eachother and we take the highest ranked nations of those regions and we just check the rankings of those nations.
exemple:
region X : highest ranked nation : 12387
region Y : highest ranked nation : 7625

first we check the last numbers : x: 7 and y: 5. the lowest number scores. then the second numbers etc.
in the example region y will win with 3 goals against 2 for region x

a game is played in two days. first day = first half, second day = second half.

very easy indeed.

every region can inscribe in this thread.
just fill out this little form.
***********
i am the 'delegate/founder' of [your region]
and my region wants to take part in the world cup for regions.
***********

registrations will be closed at december 21 2003.

please no telegrams to my main nation. for questions contact WCR info @
http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/page=display_nation/nation=wcr_info

welcome and good luck.

some people asked me to explain the score-system a little more.

i will post it here:

i will explain with an example.

let's imagine a game: the south pacific vs the north pacific.
first, we check the united nations report in both regions. then we look in both regions at the nation ranked first.

in our exaple:
the north pacific: sinkorswim
the south pacific: housestan

then we check the world ranking of both nations.
sinkorswim: 52 (00052)
housestan: 6 (00006)

then we place them next to eachother
s: 00052
h: 00006
T: 000hs

(0 = no goal, h = goal for housestan (= the south pacific), s = goal for sinkorswim (= the north pacific))
and T = total.

we check all individual numbers :
- first number : both 0 = no goal
- second and third : idem
- fourth : s: 5 and h: 0 = h scores, becaus h's got the lowest number.
- fifth number : s: 2, h: 6 = s scores because s's got the lowest number.

so, the north pacific - the south pacific = 1-1.

but this is only the first half, the next day we play the second half, in the same way.

for more info, contact me.

A few questions:
- How many regions can play?
- Will you do the scoring required?
- Won't very large regions (such as feeder regions or the rr) have a big advantage in this?
- How a match is played is clear to me. What about the tournament? Is it single-elimination? Swiss? How many rounds? I hear 'qualificatoin rounds' being mentioned... ?
- Are you sure you want to start on the day before Christmas?
- Why a whopping two weeks just to sign up?

If at the end you still need a few regions to 'fill the roster', let me know. I'm founder of a couple of regions, as well as in the government of a few. Things can be arranged ;)

Ballotonia

-any number of regions can play.

-very large nations do have advantage, but it is possible for a one-nation region to win against a pacific. example : onenationregion : 90000(un-ranking), pacific : 11 --> onenationregion wins (2-1)
so, yes, they have an advantage, but every region has a chance. it's like in real football. holland against czech. holland has a chance, but... :p

-the form of the tournament depends on how many regions will join. i prefer :
1) a qualification round in groups
2) the first round of the tournament, in groups of four
3) elimination rounds.
the qualification round could be dropped if the number of regions isn't too high (more then 32 regions = qualifications round)

-damn... christmas.. i'm not sure yet. is christmas sure it will fall on the second day of my tournament?

- two weeks... it's just because i can't make it to start earlier.

- thanks for the offer of your regions. you may sign them up at any time. i can make the qualification rounds fit, no problem.

That's not true. Why will such a region always win? Regions with more nations have a lot more chances to get a good position in the daily lists
But the score will be always 1:1, 2:0 or 0:2. As far as I understood the rules.
Ballotonia
10-12-2003, 22:11
My understanding is that the rankings will be interpreted as five digit numbers, and hence there will be 5 'scoring opportunities' per match. Hence, 5-0 is possible, and is easiest to get when the '0' is scored by a small region.

Say there's only one nation in there, and it's ranked #21386 for the day. If the other region's highest ranking nation is #264, the small region loses 5-0.

Basically, on each match you want to have your region have at least one nation in the top 1110, so that at least two digits are 0. After that it'll be the details that count. And yes, being exactly #999 is still gonna make you lose 2-3 when you play against #99888. While generally higher rankings will be better, it'll basically be down to probabilities to see what is actually gonna happen. Having more nations will be good for this competition, but will guarantee nothing.

This might be overkill, because it's a pretty easy scoring system, but it might guarantuee for less mistakes.

Battle of the undefeated in Group E
FIFA and 000 to square off in highly anticipated encounter

By: Paula Charis

(KALITA, BRAZILLICO) Brazillico has caught the fever of the World Cup of Regions, after its region, FIFA, has strung three victories together. In fact, the entire region is really backing up this event during the break between World Cups X & XI.

The Wanking Dog, a popular pub in downtown Kalita, went into ratches after FIFA won a tough match against a stingy opponent in Nederland. The entire pub exploded after Pepe, the only Brazillican on the team, came on as a substitute and scored the game winning goal in injury time.

“Yeeeaaahhhh!!” exclaimed one pub-goer, stumbling out of The Wanking Dog, “We’re number 1!”

Although this victory has almost surely clinched a birth in the second round and instilled confidence in team members and fans alike, FIFA’s greatest challenge to date will come in their next match against 000. This region has yet to be defeated, while boasting a +8 goal differential during their three games in the tourney. And while FIFA derives its strength from the concentration of footballers in its region, 000 is enjoying success due to sheer numbers.

This highly anticipated match-up may not be all that it’s being cracked up to be, since many of the FIFA’s players will be returning to their national teams, in anticipation for the start of World Cup 11. Several FIFA players, notably the Brazillican striker Pepe, have already confirmed they will not attend the 000-FIFA game, preferring to aid their national squads to qualify for the upcoming World Cup.

Nonetheless, the FIFA-000 encounter will take place on January 3rd, and is still expected to be a closely contested match.

OOC- Wow... First RP to date... Maybe I'll start a trend...

World News: FIFA Set to Face 000, A Battle of the Best
By: Ken Takajima, Freelance Sports Writer

World Cup 10 may have just ended but soccer fever still has not left One Red Dot just yet. Although One Red Dot has no connection whatsoever with the new World Cup for Regions, organised by Reimstagrad, the Dottians have been in full support for their alter-ego nation, One Blue Dot's, region: FIFA.

"We have played a big part in the NationStates World Cup, especially after we have hosted the 10th one, and what a better way to show our further support for most of the nations playing in the World Cup and this new competition than to support FIFA in this regional version of the World Cup," said Alvin Ker, President of the Sports Association of One Red Dot. "We are in full support of this and we hope that FIFA will take the trophy."

FIFA, so far, has been undefeated after 3 matches and will be playing against region 000, who also has been undefeated. This match will be brodcast live on Channel 7, following Mr. Ker's announcement of his support. All other matches concerning FIFA will also be broadcast on Channel 7.

the russian federation is playin against island of santac tomorrow. as there are three regions in our group with 6 points, this game we be a very important one. if we win this we make a very good chance in proceeding to the second round.

the russian federation is ready to win. island of santac is a region with only two nations, however, they played surprisingly well until now.

apparatsjik television will broadcast the game live. (and after this game, the clash of the two big teams in group E) with off course, lot's of attention to all other games.

maybe the biggest surprise of the first round was FIFA. they managed to win all their games in a group that was considered as the most difficult of all. the first three games they went up next to the biggest regio in this competition: 000. from the fourth game (what they won against 000) they came lonely on top in their group, and in the last game they crushed adieu gary cooper with a stunning 5-0. keep an eye on this highly efficient team. FIFA should be able reach a good place in this cup.

(start keeping your fingers crossed again ballo :? )

Two days in advance??

Oh wait, we're up against YOUR region...

Ok, ok. I know the Dutch team tends to underperform as much as they think they can get away with (lazy bums), but each of these games is elimination. They gotta do well. Right? Right? RIGHT?!?

From the Sikenian Daily:

Yay FIFA!
In the match of the regional championship, the politicians of 'Politics be' had never a real chance. After a never-endangered 4-1 victory, the FIFA-all-star-team will face the Communists of 'Communists paradise'. This match showed the class of the Belmorian and Liverpudlian forwards. Syku Hexen, the rejistanian goalie compared this match with matches against the weakest domestic team 'Sike kaletri'.

EDIT: Also,
Nederland (The 7 Provinces): #1,822

Sure, you have your players train for that, and then you'll be ill-prepared when you meet Nederland in the finals ;)

(and that's assuming you can beat the GLA!)

Nederland's a good team and has been competitive against every side they've played. Nederland is also the biggest region remaining in the tournament.

Matchday 3
FIFA 2 - Nederland 1

However, we beat Nederland before and we'll beat them again.

Sowhatsville News
Dominant Dutch Display flounders following fiesty FIFA fightback!

Despite being the second best team for most of the match, the FIFA squad have pulled off an upset victory over the claasy Nederland side to progress to the final of the inaugural WC for regions.

After a poor first half showing, a few choice words from team manager and coach Nate E Visser (probably involving the threat of a horrible death if things didn't improve, although that is only this reporters opinion!)sparked a much better second half performance from the FIFA side. 3 goals in 20 minutes saw the side through.

Final score: FIFA 3 Nederland 1

FIFA will play GLA in the final, after they were victorious over Meistertrainerforum by a similar 3-1 score.

Riemstagrad: Yes, we should definitely do this again, it's way fun!!

Items to change, IMHO:

- Have a way for scores to end up as 0-0, a common result in soccer but not in this game. It would require the same nation be listed in both regions. Perhaps: if the last digit is the same, the score becomes 0-0 in disregard of the previous digits?

- Penalties. They're somewhat tedious, but it works. Can someone come up with a simpler system to do the same thing? I'll think about it too.

Other idea: instead of ALL nations in a region counting, only look at a list of 13 nations submitted prior to the match? (11 + 2 substitutes) Ofcourse, they only count when and if they're in the region they're supposed to be playing for ;)

thanks ballotonia.

- the 0-0 is indeed something that is (almost) impossible. your proposal sounds good to me. we could apply this in the next edition.

- the penalties... i'm aware of the somewhat strange system :? . i added them just before the second round started, when i realized that a draw would screw things up here :P . the penalty-system was the highest issue on my to-change-list. i'm thinking of some simpler system... all suggestions are welcome.

- a real soccer-team in a region... there is a pro: the ones willing to play are more interested and this could improve the interaction (wich was rather poor in this first edition) and the bigger regions will be forced to choose their players. the small ones will have a bigger chance then.
there is also a contra: what if it is a big region, where more then 13 players want to participate? the regions with less then 11 players? 7 would be enough to apply this, but less 7... (maybe it is a good thing to get rid of all those very small regions, don't know)

-other thing: my website sucked big time  , especially in the second round... i think i have to plan the calendar so that the games are only played when i'm in my study-room, and not at home... OpenOffice and MSOffice aren't really compatible... and my knowledge of building websites is nothing.

- RP... i don't want to calculate the RP efforts into the results, but i think it would be a lot better with more RP. any ideas?

- i managed this on my own this time (it's not that much word actualy) but if someone is interested in joining some kind of organisation commitee, contact me.

GLA (The New Nacho Wagon) : #3,714
FIFA (Gilmeecia) : #4,024
GLA - FIFA : 2-1

Gilmeecia's national sport is Competitive Body Piercing, I would have expected to see them crack the top 100. If you've never watched a Gilmeecian Piercing Match, here's the rules:

1. Select a team of four, one piercer and three piercees (affectionately known as pin cushions)
2. The piercer gets five minutes to try to make an opposing piercee collapse, by piercing the hell out of him. If the piercee resists, he scores a point for his team.
3. Repeat this three times, once for each pin cushion.
4. The team with the points win the match.

OOC- Believe or not, this was actually a sport, and there was an international event staged a couple months ago.

IC- FIFA loses a heartbreaker against the GLA 2-1. Nate E. Visser was said to be even redder than usual, being "hopping mad" with his team's inability to finish.

FIFA Manager Nate E. Visser

The Belmorian strikers who had been so good at scoring goals (OOC - ...and taking most of the credit for FIFA's wins) sputtered miserably in this final and we're unable to tickle the twine during the course of the 90 minutes. Although FIFA players were unhappy with this loss, they can walk away taking solice in having collected the most wins throughout the tournament and being widely regarded as "the team to beat" by other regions.
