A Darkness in Tordor: Part Three, the Turning of the Tide.

Tordor
06-12-2003, 06:40
War raged across Tordor as rebel TLPA and Loyalist Royal forces battled cross the vast Island kingdom, however the tide was beganing to turn, at th beseiged capital Reforced by Belem forces surporting the Royal Governemnt have tricked the rebel forces and launched a attack agaist the besieging rebel forces where they least expected it, in Southern Tordor, Western Asian troops have landed. Also Assassins sent by the TLPA leaders to kill the leaders of various countries have failed and many have been captured, succeeding in only enraging those countries and their only success in Teritora succeeded enraging the people there so much that they have called for a meeting of the IDI for a war of vengance for the attack... The Turning point of the war had arrived the loyal Tordoran government would rise or fall by choises to come for the Tide had not yet turned and Tordor could yet fall to the darkness of the TLPA and their mad vison.

OOC: Tor/Ter, 7 missiles, right?
Else, this is response to attacks against my naval forces on the previous thread with 7 experimental missiles.

IC: Like the slower moving missiles previously fired at the ships, these incoming weapons were detected as shadows in the radar back-scattering from the water and the report was instantly transmitted from the Gatekeeper units floating high overhead to the fleet vessels.

This time, however, matters were less simple.

The picket-ship AD Destroyers and a Cruiser armed their MTHEL and MTHEL II systems, but they would not prove so effective against such a low-flying target.

Well over two dozen Barak III supersonic point-defense missiles were fired against the incoming units, as were numerous RAM missiles, but they would, ultimately, prove to be futile.

The first missile was engaged by one of the lasers, which burnt through the front, melting the guidance unit into a block of silicon and metals, which caused it to smash into the surf less than two kilometers away although some shrapnel continued far enough to bounce off of the back of a Destroyer, damaging the RIB bay and parts of the tail superficially. Another missile was burnt out by two more of the lasers and its charge exploded, sending most of the shrapnel back into other missiles around it.

Three of the RAMs were able to hone in on the third missile, already damaged by shrapnel from the second, almost by accident as they were hit by it before the simple program had expected it. The explosives charge on the first failed to ignite but the other two hit home, sending the missile into hundreds of supersonic bits of shrapnel that peppered the fleet ships and caused minor damage to the armored hulls. Three deck-mounted smaller guns were taken out of order and the midport phased radar array of another was seriously damaged, forcing the shut-down of the system.

Elsewhere, the air was filled with shrapnel from the Millennium Guns' exploding rounds, the Barak III missiles, and other RAM units.

One more missile was destroyed by a combination of hits, starting with a Barak III missile strike on the engine unit and ending with a pair of M-gun shots across the control surfaces, which sent the missile sideways as the surfaces mis-steered to the left and downwards. The unit skipped several times as it was ripped apart upon contact with the surface, sending a minimal amount of shrapnel into the air some 3km from the ships.

The other three missiles were much more successful in their missions, comparatively. One was struck by M-gun fire, loosing some control, but it was able to hit a helicopter set on one of the Destroyers as it exploded, destroying the helicopter, the landing pad, and sending shrapnel into the hangarbay's blast-proofed doors. A pair of pilots nearby and a team of three mechanics were lost or declared lost in the explosion, the launch pad would not be viable for anything more than essential resupply missions from then on.

Another missile made its way home, striking and exploding against the armored outrigger of one cruiser. The explosion was fairly well neutralized by the counter-blast and armoring, but the kinetic energy of the round sent a massive shudder throughout the ship and pushed shrapnel into the main hull...and through some of the armoring.

Several fiber-optic sensor-relay wires were cut and a suite of crew quarters was filled with some minor shrapnel, but the crewmembers were thankfully all at their battlestations and clear of the blast zone. Some minor structural damage was spread throughout the ship due to the impact forces, but the damaged lines were superceded by the back-up lines and the damaged sector was checked and isolated. The ship would have to limp somewhat through the rest of the mission.

The final missile did the most damage. Having been struck by one RAM and an M-gun shot, its guidance system was gone. Plowing into the fleet at top speed, it exploded high above the bow of a destroyer, wiping out the ship's main gun and mangling the cover of a Barak VL array. The explosion rushed down into the gun turret, setting off a couple of shots not stored in the spall-proof and armored storage case. The entire ship was knocked about by the impact, but the blast sent two 3in gun rounds back up into the Barak VLS array, seriously damaging several missiles and the control system.

The multiple explosions left the ship partially crippled, with a dozen dead crewmembers, and with three others seriously injured.

The ships fired several LASMs back at the apparent origin of the firings and the Gatekeeper units sent eight supersonic CALCMs with various warhead packages aboard.

--------------------

For the Marines on the shore, the rapid connections of supersonic blast waves and explosions sent some seeking cover but the entire event lasted only for a few moments.

The commanders of the landed forces began to receive reports about initial fortifications being completed and of a final landing of armored units. The plan was set up and the wait for the coming enemy forces was begun.

Rocket and shell artillery and mobile heavy mortar batteries were well-established and scout units had marked out several key passes where the enemy heavy forces and mechanized infantry would have to pass. Other areas were seeded with AP mines, claymores, and remote observation/motion detection devices.

Ballistic-shielding walls filled with dirt and rocks from around its base were erected about the perimeter of the fire bases and infantry squads were assigned fire sectors for their unit weapons. Various LAVs were located about the camp walls and had their turreted weapons adjusted to act as a part of the defenses.

With the available artillery, naval fire, and local supporting armaments, the Marines felt that they were ready for the challenge. They had drawn a line in the forest and they would hold it, and everything that lay behind it, against the insurgents.

Several special forces teams are dispatched from the main camp to scout for incoming enemy infantry units and they rush off riding ATVs and Desert Raiders.

Meanwhile the TLPA rebel's Corps of 48,000 men approached the Western Asia troops at a snails pace, they were extremely over conident and arggent, they thought they were unstopable against a force of what they believed to be subhumans, and even worse, jewish subhumans. They thought it would be a piece of cake.

At the Capital the Rebel forces were competely unprepared for the attack on their left flank, they had moved most of their forces to the right expecting a massive attack there and the confusion was futher added because of the darkness of the after midnight assault.

As the approaching units are spotted by long-range UAVs and by surveillance flights, artillery groups are equipped with extra ammunition and naval artillery batteries are tuned into the land-based artillery network.

Calls are made to the struggling Loyalist Tordoran Forces to ask for some assistance on behalf of the Marine expeditionary units, but the initial responses seem to urge patience and plead for allowance for the Loyalists' weakness.

The Gatekeepers are, one after the other, called down to the camp to be reloaded. The replacement missiles had just arrived aboard a high speed transport and are rushed into service.

Once again in place, the crews begin to plot out targets in the path of the approaching enemy forces.

By 2000 hour of the third day, the forces are ready. At 2005, the Gatekeepers begin the first bombardment with PDE-improved CALCMs.

Some eight AGM-86FP (w/3,200 M85 DPICM/APAM bomblets) and four AGM-86GPs (w/24 P3I BAT submunitions) are launched at the main body in an attempt to slow the progress, or at least to remove some of the enemy's armored and mechanized capabilities.

The second bombardment is prepared as the expended rounds are replaced by the missile tender crewmen.

The missiles rush towards the TLPA forces at just over Mach 2, their deadly cargo armed and ready to wreck havoc on the rebels.

Some Marines below watch the missile launches through binoculars, but they all hear the loud boom as the missiles rip through the sound barrier.

Unlike their enemies the TLPA hadn't learned their lessons well, they lost people in the hundreds as their moved forward and their forward movement was reduced quickly to a crawl. Meanwhile one Vorin Defender Mechs, 20 updated Type 74 MBTs, 10 updated Type 73 APCs, 10 Mitsubishi F-1 C Close support fighters, 20 Avenger Police tanks and 10,000 troops were dispatched from various cities and towns that could afford take a little bit of their defenses to come to the western asian troops' aid.

Glad to receive the reinforcements, the Marine XO re-organized his forces to integrate the Tordoran Loyalists into the ranks of his men--a morale booster for both sides.

He also was relieved to hear the news that two additional Gatekeeper ULA units were being dispatched from Western Asia and were due within a few days...the lending of Gatekeepers to Sniper Country had meant a fortunate coincidence in terms of Gatekeeper construction activities. Coupled with the knowledge that several thousand more Marine Corps soldiers, with heavy mechanized forces, were en route by Fast Sea Transports and would be arriving within a few days...but would it be in time?

He was interrupted in his thoughts by the entrance of a Colonel.

"Sir" He salutes

The General quickly returns the salute
"Yes, Colonel, what is the news about those Gatekeeper strikes?"

The Colonel opens a binder in his hand and flips to a divider, where he skims a document before reporting
"Very good, sir. Massive casualties are believed to have been inflicted on the advancing forces...and their pace has slowed."

The General suddenly is beaming
"This is excellent news. We might even get some of our reinforcements in place before they arrive.

"Tell the commanders of the ships to continue with their bombardments...numbers two through four...and then get back to me with the reports."

"Yes, Sir!" The Colonel salutes before retiring to his own command station nearby

The General is left to ponder the significance of events as he pens a note thanking the Loyalist peoples of Tordor for their support, pledging his backing of their freedom from the TLPA.

The TPLA progress was further slowed by the Loyalist Guerillas that were always attacking where they were least expected and killing a few of the TLPA and more imporantly often destroying or taking supplies needed by the TLPA Corps as they edged forward. They also gave information on the TLPA forces coming towards the Western Asian Marines backed by the Tordoran Loyalists.

OOC: Alright, I believe I'm to post my troop movements here.

IC: The Kechans were now on the move, a single Carrier Squadron was preparing to leave, the 60 F14s and 30 Stealth Bombers were being checked over by their crews, all aircraft were being painted in camoflauge patterns best suited for the Area of Operations, the 3 Modular Cutters were being outfitted with weaponry, and other gear was being stored away for later use, the 2 Los Angelas-Class submarines were being prepared, the Squadron would move out soon.

Elsewhere: A full Battalion of National Guard Combat Engineers had gotten themselves ready to go, painting their Powered Armor in appropriate camoflauge, and preparing some vehicles, they would be setting out soon as well.

The Loyalist General's helicopter finally set down in a clearing near the de facto Western Asian command center. As the helicopter began to rotor down, the General and his staff emerged from the aircraft and were ushered into the HQ tents.

General Thomas Schmidt greeted his Tordoran counter-part as he entered the tent and offered the man a chair beside himself.

OOC: So far, I've RP'd things as a semi-forested area adjacent (<1km) to the shore. My troops have established themselves within the forrest and somewhat in the clearing.

Off-shore, there is a large fleet of WA vessels (heavy BB-like vessels ~20km out, AC carriers and such spread farther out to sea).

The troops have essentially established a 'safe' zone with borders established by earth-filled prefab walls (the Brits and US Army have versions of this, it's plastic with some metal reinforcement and you fill the space (I believe about 5 ft) with earth or available materials...these are filled with semi-sandy earth. Positioned along this wall are LAV-25/300/600/M vehicles and towards the center of the camp are a number of Arty batteries (both shell and rocket) with a number of AD systems (gun, missile, laser) and C&C dealies to boot.

It's Tordor's call about the specifics.

There are landing zones and some facilities...enough space to land one of my ULAs on the beach (basically by VTOL) but not enough space has been secured for any serious transport aircraft (>C130). When the battle is completed (if the WA Marines win), then enough land will be secured for a permanent base including an airfield (enough for the heaviest/largest of aircraft), warehouses, and an ad hoc port (think D-Day+2).

IC: The Kechan helicopters sped over the WA vessels, then proceeded to the designated area over the beach, they then called in to let the Marines know of their arrival, and flew on to the area held by the WA Marines.

Out at Sea: The Carrier Squadron was getting closer to it's destination, they would now be in range of detection by the WA forces.

General Mirsha spoke. "Intresting, Tordoran Mortars tend to be the world war II style even if the Techology behinds them changes. The Guerrillas are currently using for their rifles, the Geran-7 Guerrilla combat rifle, which comes with scope, is competely silent, fires a 13 mm armor piercing bullets which come in a 10 round clip, long range and the enemy has no way to tell which direction the bullet is coming from. It can be fited with a rifle fired armor piercing antitank rocket which is also standard for the regular Tordoran miltary and of which the soldiers carry 7. When you started talking TARS for a moment I though you were talking the powerful Teritoran guns but it is a intresting weapon as well. What about moble ground forces launched antiaircraft missiles like against Helocopters and low flying aircraft and such that would be good for use by Guerrillas?"

"Well," the General says as he flips two pages over and reads through a section of text, "we have some Stingers and some of our tripod-mounted systems can engage low-flying aircraft, but most of our AD systems are either truck-mounted, towed, or mounted on tracked vehicles...none of which work well for guerilla operations.

"We can transfer about 40 Stinger units now, but the majority of the man-portable SAM systems won't be arriving until the main force gets here. We can put in an order for a few hundred units to be delivered by ULA when the main force gets here...but we can't do much in the way of dedicated light SAM systems yet.

"The SHIPON units can be used against helicopters by a good shooter, but they're not made for it. We have a number of tripod-mounted systems, such as the SPIKE-LR ATGM...with a 4km range...or the NTD, also known as the SPIKE-ER ATGM...with an 8km range. The NTD is heavy tripod or HMMWV mounted while the LR can be fired from a prone or kneeling position with a small tripod. These can be effective, but they might be burdensome for your troops.

The Western Asian fleet maneuvered to accomodate the Kechan and Teritoran naval forces within its protective coverage.

Ashore, the Generals completed their meeting with assurances of good graces and some notes to their attendants to find and relay certain bits of information and materiel between the groups. The Western Asian Marine Corps General prepares to leave his tent to meet up with some of the Kechan engineers. He plans to inquire about the size of their expected forces and plans for accomodations.

It was reported to him as he left the tent that favorable winds and weather have advanced the pace of the Western Asian main Marine contingent. The pair of new Gatekeeper ULAs, arriving in a convoy of airships, is reported to now be only a short distance away and he orders his logistics personnel to prepare for their arrival within 72 hours' time.
