New York City, New York:Capital of NYNJ

President de los Santos raised a hand and waved to the public as he emerged from the black limosine and walked along one of Central Parks many pathways to the green lawn. The area was a mass of people, cops, and military. It was a special announcement,no one was really prepared for what was about to be said. The government had hyped this announcement for sometime now, and it was visable just how many people were watching. The buildings surrounding Central Park were visably crowded with people at the windows and loud speakers were set up along the inside and outside of the park for the conveniance of the public. Television and radio were on hand and it was visable by the fact there were dozens of microphones on the podium from dozens of different news networks and radio news stations.

Stopping once he reached a podium Gregory once more waved to the cheering masses his left hand moving up to cover the microphone as he leaned away and whispered over toward a random government aid. "When this is done, get me General Franklin at the Strategic Air Command. " The aid rushed off the side of the stage as Gregory removed his hand from the microphone and raised it palm to the public and began to speak.

"My fellow citizens of this great Republic. I thank you for your attendance at this momentous occasion, and for those of you listening or watching on television or radio I like to send my heartfelt thanks to you for taking the time to listen to this very important announcement. For years we've lived under the spectre of nuclear war with several nations who formerly identified themselves as being with the Reich. However, over the past year, the threat has diminished...it has diminished so much infact that this day, this very day I have come to you, the people who I serve to announce the following..."

He let the tension build up for a few seconds taking in a deep breath before continuing on once more, "We are standing down our nuclear assets from a pre-wartime level to what we consider a peacetime level. For a nation so dedicated to its armmed forces as this one it shall be a rather difficult transition, we must view our former enemies with a certain amount of skeptisim yes. However we must also realize that governments change as do people. Most of you do not realize what goes on within the SATO alliance. But you all know that our nation is apart of it, and has been for sometime. You also know SATO was formed in defense against the Reich, however, the day has arrived when a Reich nation, is actively seeking entry into SATO..."

He let that fall over the crowd for abit. It was a rather grand day in the Federal Republic, the news that nuclear war was no longer a possibility each day was sure to lighten up the mood of many citizens, at least it was hoped it would by the government. However as was the case even with an intelligent population, it did not mean they were well informed by the media. It would take serious explination over the airwaves before many would grasp the signifficance of the Reich no longer being a threat.

"With the Reich no longer existing, I have weighed several difficult choices over the past several days. SATO was built to combat the Reich, just were will it go without an enemy. Some in the government, and some in the political arena say the void is filled by the Capitalist hating CACE. But is our Republic willing enough to sit through another cold war? When is it the people of this land will live in peace without the fear of armmed combat? These questions are ones that I ask myself now. And until those questions can be answered I announce that as of this date the Federal Republic of New York and New Jersey will suspend its membership in SATO, its last offical act being a sponsering of the nation known as Akilliam for SATO membership. This suspension is to begin post haste. We will continue in an observational role within SATO however we will not actively take part in planning, exercises, and decisions concerning SATO until such a time if ever the time arrives where we feel that SATO needs another country. I leave you now my people, hoping that the burden of nuclear war, or massive conventional war has been eased off your shoulders, and off the shoulders of our sons and daughters who serve in our armmed forces."

With that President Gregory de los Santos stepped back from the podium waving his arms to the stunned and shocked public, no one expected such a two pronged announcement. On the news channels it would create a firestorm as analysts tried to figure out what the hell was going on inside of the inner workings of the government. As Gregory made his way back into the limosine he picked up the semi-secure phone to General Jim Franklin the commander of the Strategic Air Command, the main body which controlled the nuclear weapons deployment, and kept the forces on pre-war status.

"General Franklin, I hope you listened to my announcement."

"Yes, sir Mr President. We're all glad to shift to peacetime levels. Just what however would you constitute peacetime level though sir?Its not something we've ever prepared for."

"You'll just have to wait. We're going to have to completely reasses the military now. Suffice to say when I know how to explain what a peacetime level is, you'll be the first one to know." Gregory's right hand moving up and waving forward slightly to the driver as the motorcade pulled out from one of the many eastside enterances to Central Park going Southward toward the Financial/Government district. With a sigh Gregory sat back and looked out of the window as word slowly spread of the magnitude and meaning of the announcement. Granted it would be a mix of feelings as no one was really prepared for either announcement and there would definately be a general resentment from the military and its future. For now though Gregory was happy to think to himself how times have changed seemingly for the better.

OOC: Small OOC notes
-Akiliam left the Reich, so it’s not really a Reich member applying. The Reich is still alive, even if it is decaying somewhat.
-does this mean the visits are cancelled?
-Wanna join the Black Diamond Initiative (http://s3.invisionfree.com/BDI/) instead?

Statement on behalf of the government by the ministry of Foreign Affairs:
We are saddened by the decision of New York and Jersey to leave the South Atlantic Treaty Organisation. We feel that the organisation still has an important role to play in the future or the NS world, and in providing security for it’s members.

However, we are delighted that New York and Jersey can finally be at ease now that the perceived threat of the Reich is diminising.

We wish NY well and hope to remain friends in the future.
