OOC: Serious character-oriented RP idea

30-11-2003, 05:52
First of all, I'd like to give a greeting to all of you who are interested in serious character RP and who bothered to read this thread.

I'm a fairly new nation (pop. under 100 million) but from the feedback I've gotten from the RP's I've been doing, my writing style's pretty decent (note: this is not a shameless self plug).

I don't know about you older and more experienced nations, but I'm a little worn-out with all the constant war/espionage/random action RP's that have been popping up all over the forums. Seems like those RP's end up focusing more on the events around them, then on the characters themselves.

I don't know how many of you will actually take this seriously, but what I propose is the creation of a new more character oriented RP. This is where it gets a little complicated...players more into the action RP's will probably not want to participate since there will be no assassination plots, no bomb threats, no shoot outs or car chases (listens to the moans and groans.) This RP will strictly feature characters interacting and getting to know each other...like a social party. You can mix events, hang out, even play out romances or shamelessly flirt with other characters...whatever.

Think of it more along the lines of a large social party in a way.

I'm short on ideas for a setting or a backdrop....I was thinking about the typical ball/party deal, but I know that's fairly cliche...so if anyone has any ideas, please don't hesitate to post.

Thanks for reading.

Though my RP are generally part political-part character orientated, I am interested in this idea.

Oh, and this (www.bbfree.com/shadowrp) is a shameless plug.

I don't know...you can only do so many parties without nothing interesting happening at them...

South Dalania, choose your RP partners wisely (read threads) and you'll get what you want (yes, what you're talking about already exists on this very forum).

sounds great, but I'm already in one.

I thought party RPs were done to death.

I'm a fan of CO-RPs myself, the vast majority of the RPs I've participated in being CO-RPs.

What I think would be interesting, though, is capturing social interaction in a new setting. A bombed out city being shelled, or a decaying megapolis torn apart from civil strife... at times like this it brings out the best in people, or the worst in people. Violence and opposing factions would be involved, but they would be defined by the characters populating them, not a brief sentence like "Rebels move to assault the Orange Street Armory."

The party idea was only an example. I didn't have anything else to use as a comparison. I posted because I'm trying to gauge the level of interest for something like this....sorry if I trampled on anything that's been beaten to death before :|

Like most of the newer players a good percentage of my RP's have been in the II....and I think it's fair to say that generally serious RP's in the II (aside from a few well-written military campaigns) are non-existant.

It might sound like I think I'm 'better' than everyone else...but I'm just looking for a good RP time...like everyone else :)

Anhierach's idea is really interesting btw :D

It doesn't sound like you think you're better than everyone else. II really is pants. I only use NS.

Chapters 1 and 2 of the Warheit Saga...2 isn't over yet...but it's closed now since it's 30+ pages. If you can wait for chapter 3...then you can join.

They are action/plot-driven/character RP's....they have some of everything.

Just to expand on my earlier idea, I think it would be ideal if each player controlled no more than 5-6 characters. Small enough to capture their personalities and large enough to engage in action without getting bogged down in endless strings of conversation where each player just posts a line of dialog. They could be anything from a family to a guerilla cell.

An important thing that most people forget is that war isn't just about guns and bombs. War is ultimately about people, people in rare circumstances that they'd rather not be in. People fighting not for some abstract ideals, but to protect their friends and the people they know, to live to see another day, to live and love in a world gone mad.

I guess I've watched too much war movies involving small units or individuals, hah.

I prefer political RP myself, but I've been looking to further develop a character or two.

I like to develop the character of my polical figures, so my RPs are a bit of everything.

Anhierach's idea is really interesting btw

Wait a week or two, and that'll be the situation in much of my nation.
