Milesia

In a shock move, all of Milesia’s top 20 banks have declared themselves bankrupt, leaving only the Milesian Central Bank standing. This triggered a 68% fall in the value of the MySEQ 1000, before a rally due to a press release from the new UMP Business Office regarding government policy.
In a move that is sure to confirm global economic trends with recessions hitting many countries, the Milesian banks were hit by the failure of several Danaan provinces (Desona, Sona and Moil Island in particular) to repay development loans. The default was due to the worsening economic climate in each country and sentiment regarding alleged exploitation of the counties in question.
In an attempt to recoup some of their losses from this, the banks upped their charges to domestic customers, fuelling a huge withdrawal of funds from accounts as well as the stock-market and their transfer to local Credit Unions and the MCB.
The Business Office’s chief economist, Gerard Leahy, has tackled the problem of growing unemployment in recent time, not helped by today’s news, due to automation in primary, secondary and many tertiary industries. He has suggested that we should aim for a society where employment is not a necessity and that a basic income should be provided for all.
The benefits of technological innovation and stream lining have meant that only about 1% of the previous workforce is actually necessary anymore. 1%! These are generally the owners of the said industry. The rest are free to pursue their own pursuits, be that opening a shop to sell their own crafts, or provide a service they have an interest in.
Local councils are to be funded by a land tax (private ownership of land being unsustainable in the long term, outside of that of a private residence) and redistribution by a 50% sales tax at the each point of sale. The 50% sales tax is to be debited from the person’s bank account in the MCB, credited to the govt. MCB account and then redistributed to every adult, be they a craft shop owner, an employed person, an industrialist etc. This leaves the profit incentive and free market in place but provides everyone in society with a reasonable standard of living and the freedom to pursue their life and hobbies without the interference of work.
The UPM External Office and the UPM Internal Office issued a joint press release today.
Due to the recent financial changes initiated through the collapse of the Milesian banks, a comprehensive change in government was needed in order to initiate the wealth redistribution policies that would spread the benefits of technology. To this effect, a series of reforms will be implemented from mid-night tonight. Some of the more important reforms include the disbanding of the military, devolving of power to local councils which will serve 10,000 people, the devolving of law and order powers as well as stringent environmental planning and taxes on the use of land.
