Arpean Thaumatological Institute Project Review

((OOC: This is sometime before the entire Iraqstan situation, just for a little clarification =p))

Firefury sat at her desk, large reploid feet slung over the armrest, back leaning against the opposite one, as she surveyed the Arpean Thaumatology Institute group presenting the latest updates on their projects.

"Well, Firefury-sama, first up for review is a thaumaturgic amplifier..." One member of the team- a rather geeky looking lanky young man- steps forward, holding a bizarre little device that looked something like a cross between a good luck charm and a stopwatch. "Using a mild electrical stimulus and the same crystaline substance used in thaumaturgic capacitors, this device can be used to amplify the amount of power generated by a single person by nearly 50%. Some of our test subjects have achieved amplified TU ratings of as much as 85% higher than they can generate unaided."

A brief demonstration follows, as an ATI psion demonstrates, levitating a large lead block with quite a bit of effort without the device, and then lifting several lead blocks with about the same effort with the device. Firefury nods and signs a grant for that team to continue research.

"Next is this large, bulky contraption-" A slender humanoid reploid wheels in a large device that looks somewhat like a large luggage x-ray machine. "Our team has been studying the medical applications of thaumatech, and this is the most recent result of our work. Psionics, being intimately related to the physical body, seem to be far more accurate in locating and diagnosing assorted medical ailments, long before conventional devices would be able to detect anything. This device uses a small thaumaturgic capacitor- the psion operator can use the machine to focus on any particular part of the body of the patient, or to do a full-body scan. The scanning chamber is lined with a number of tiny capacitor crystals to assist the operator in locating illnesses- the tiny capacitors pick up on the patient's own thaumaturgic energy, and makes it easier for the operator to pinpoint problems by accurately reading the patient's aura. It is not yet perfected, but testing so far has yielded an early detection rate of several days in some cases, and several months in others, such as some forms of cancer."

Firefury raises both eyebrows as the explanation goes on, slowly nodding her approval.

"We are also researching the possibility of using thaumaturgic equipment for treatment purposes, but our research is not yet far enough for the development of a prototype at this time."

"Good stuff." The Queen nods, and signs off another grant. "Can't go wrong with better medical stuff."

Various other development teams present their research to the Queen- some get continued research grants, others not. The final team is a small group, and their prototype appears to be some sort of restraining device.

"Okay... I'm stumped. What's this one?" Firefury lifts the silvery device and examines it.

"An experiment in interrogation magitech, Highness." The team's leader begins slowly. "By using an alloy made using mithril and the crystaline substance used for capacitors, this device is attached to the subject- note the collar, handcuffs, and ankle shackles, as well as the waist cuff with the connecting line between the neck collar and the cuff."

"So.. it's a fancy-shmancy prisoner restraint?" Firefury sounds skeptical.

"Not exactly, Firefury-sama." Another member of the team explains. "It may not look like it, but it is an interrogation device. The substance it is made from is extremely conductive for thaumaturgic energy... a psion interrogator simply grips the lead line, and asks the subject a question. If the subject refuses to answer, the psion can use the device to make the subject feel a physical sensation, for instance, pain, without actually causing any harm to the subject. Because no actual damage is done, interrogations of terrorists and the like can be handled with much greater effect, since interrogators can go to much greater lengths to force these scum to spill what they know. It can also be 'pre-set'- psionic 'programming' to prevent suicides or certain actions that could lead to escape- Um... Firefury-sama?"

The development team pauses and eyes the orange reploid, who is holding the device, with a look on her face of utter disgust. "What an... an... INHUMANE... contraption!" She flings it against the wall as if it was a poisonous snake, wiping her hands on a kleenex as if soiled by holding the device. "What a filthy device! I will not stand for further development on this project! The Shogunate does NOT use any sort of physical coersion like what this would do! Cease this project and destroy the research immediately! Remember honor- think of what else this vile thing could be used for! Slavery! Control! I will not stand for it." Firefury rages, now standing at her desk, both hands planted on the metal surface, an unpleasant glare plastered on her face. "I suggest you think of more productive ways to apply thaumatech than this." She hisses, a white-hot burst from her arm-mounted cannon shattering the prototype device into a fine silvery dust, and shattering and scorching the fake plant and its ceramic pot that the device had been flung into.

The team stares, dumbstruck, faces discovering previously unknown shades of white. "H-hai, we will stop development... and destroy the research... Highness."

The last team hastily excuse themselves, while Firefury goes to read the reports from the other teams more thoroughly. "Idiots." She mutters.
