From page 1D of the Ianapalis Star-Tribune:

Gulls Try Again!
Steve Martinson's side will take another crack at the Cup; St. Amour to hang up his skates

IANAPALIS, Iansisle -- In a news conference that swung from the highest points of cheer to the lowest valleys of misery to fond memories of happier times, head coach and general manager Steve Martinson announced that his side, far and away the greatest in the Commonwealth after slaughtering the Fort Dawes Miners 4-0 in the Vessinghampton Cup, will be after the Don Cherry Cup for the third straight year.

The Gulls found themselves taken out of competition early in their first campaign and dropped into the 'B' cup, where they promptly dominated the field.

Replaced into the main competition, the Gulls swept into the race, confident with their seventh-place ranking and eager for revenge. However, they faltered early, falling 3-2 to Caer Pugitia. A surprising win over Kalaallit Nunaat provided them with a renewed sense of hubris. A 4-2 romp over hapless Trevorland saw the Gulls sitting atop their division, with only two unranked teams between them and the Cup.

There, it fell apart. An unranked team whose name everyone was embarrassed to try and pronounce shocked the Gulls 5-0, but all was not over. They needed only beat Quebec Nouveau by three or more goals, and dominated their way to a third-period 1-0 lead. Alas, the puck slid into an empty net late, sending Sherbrooke to the playoffs and leaving the Commonwealth with a collective bitter taste in their mouth.

"We're eager for revenge," said Martinson. "There's a lot of pent up aggression here, and I plan to release it all the way to the cup!" The announcement was met with cheers from the crowd.

However, the good mood was tempered by the news that aging winger Martin St. Amour, the longest tenured member of the team and often considered to be the best player in the history of Iansislean hockey, would make this his last campaign.

"I've had a wonderful time with the Gulls," announced St. Amour, choking back tears, "and I hope to be allowed to return in a coaching function, but for now, my body is getting older." At that point, the typically stoic forward succumbed to his emotions and had to turn away from the microphone.

Team captain B.J. MacPherson, present at the press conference, stood and raised his clenched fist to the air. "For Martin, we'll win the Cup this year!" He raised his voice over the ensuing cheer.

"This is the year of the Gulls!"

28-11-2003, 08:49
(Excerpts from the) Empire Service-

"...of course, the Walmington Red Bears shall be back, riding high atop unlikely confirmation of their status as 'not the world's worst hockey team'!"

"The Red Bears put much faith in young Regie Whiteside -now a cult hero in Norbray, and voted the nation's greatest ever ice hockey player- who is said to be improving by leaps and bounds now that Norbray has its own (rather basic) rink."

"PM Mainwaring even stepped in to prevent Whiteside's call-up, and has tabled a bill to grant the entire team a stay of duty during the third Cherry Cup."

"Several players have already stated to The Standard their intention to fight rather than to skate should their papers come through, exemption or not."

"Walmington's first domestic hockey season is under-way, with the Red Bears -competing for Norbray- facing sides from Stockshire, Kentonshire, and Southend, as well as a side fielded by Stockley Motors (name of 'The Stockley Motors'), and the nation's first professionals, a team put together by Walmington's richest man, Sir Henry Chaspot Wayne ('The Wayne-easys')."

"All games are presently played in Norbray, though the Kentonshire side is seeking permission to use their county's ice-rink, which generally is reserved for figure skating."

"In the first games of the season, the Red Bears trounced Southend 14-0, and Stockshire took-out Kentonshire 2-1."

"Sir Henry Wayne is reported to have offered Red Bears captain Ernie Mellington W£850 (US$3,400) to play for his Wayne-easys, but was reportedly turned down. Ernie evidently does not want to miss-out on the Cherry Cup."

From Trevorland Tonight:

A win in the last game of the round robin of Don Cherry Cup 2 has the Trevorland Porcupines excited and willing to be in the 3rd edition.

After the excited riot that erupted when Trevorland won their first NHL game ever, a ridiculous spurt of minor leagues has been the result. Also, the Porcupine Network has started to appear on Trevorland's airwaves, with Trevorland Tonight being the flagship show. Legendary coach Tommy Douglas is a regular contributor feeding to the frenzy.

In other news, a compilation CD "Skating Towards Ecstasy" has been released to help pay the Cassowary costs of getting to the Sports-mad Community of Kaze Progressa. Any extra proceeds will go towards buying some really good weed. I mean, charity. Yeah, that's it, charity.

Don't worry, the Cassowaries will be bringing lots of charity to the third Cherry Cup. Um, that is, if it's OK by the Progressan customs officers. If not, then, uh, it's against international law to search diplomatic bags, right? Well, the Cassowaries are all diplomats too. Yeah, that's it. Diplomats.

Good luck to all teams! The Hilbilly Warriors Icemen have been practicing for the upcoming season by doing what they always do, and what they do best: drink beer. The Icemen (as well as all other HW sports teams) have been comissioned by President Billy Jo Bob to go forth into uncharted waters in search of fame, fortune and the ultimate brew. Promising sides like Trevorland?
From: Trevorland Tonight

For that comment, we'd love to invite the head of state for Kalaalit Nunaat for a state dinner in Windsor, the capital of Trevorland. This offer is valid for after the tournament, of course. We'll be bitter enemies for our Lemieux Division battle coming up, but surely the two nations can become trading partners, and unite to fight greater evil in the world.

"Promising" Paladins not taking anything for granted"

(Kaze Progressa) Having seen what happened to the "promising" rookie Ice Paladin WCX Soccer Team (0-7 losing streak to kick off qualifiers), the Ice Paladins plan to fare better in their draw than their soccer counterparts did.

"We have an extremely tough draw out there. Trevorland is new, like us, but our scouts report that they are showing lots of spirit in practice. SterlingIce won the first Cup, and will want some national revenge after what our soccer team did to their qualifying chances. Kalaallit Nunaat is the founder of the whole thing and is certainly to be reckoned with. And the other newcomers have as good a chance as we do. This will be very interesting, certainly, and we hope that we can advance," said coach Patrick Brodeur.
Tanah Burung
12-12-2003, 02:20
The Cassowaries are not "promising." No, not promising at all. The two-time losers expect to be soundly thrashed in the Gretzky division (oddly mispelled in the host's draw  ) to real hockey teams like the Quinntonia, Iansisle, Timway Tiggers and Zinkoland. But hopes are high that they may manage to lose by smaller margins to The Esten Lands, Rejistania and Darkness Forever.

Moose Coach 'Pleased' With Cherry Cup Draw
-Frederik Johansson

KAZE PROGRESSA - Tranquillitis Moose coach Johan Hedberg is quite pleased with the draw announced last Friday for the third annual Cherry Cup.

"I wanted a stronger division and we certainly got it," Hedberg said. "We're ranked third in the world and still aren't the top seed in the group. Our old friends Soviet Haaregrad are in our group, along with Warnocks Wizards and a strong looking Warner Brothers team. It should be a real treat."

The Moose have made a great run ever since their 4-2 defeat of Soviet Haaregrad in last year's division stage. "Ever since that win, we went on a tear, smashing Quinntonia 5-0 and then getting all the way to the finals, before losing to the Soviets. I think we can carry that momentum through to this year's cup."

The Cherry Cup starts in only a week's time.

So is there an official thread for the Cup and I'm missing it or is it here or is it just not up yet? All three are equally likely :)

Don't think it's up yet. KP told me a few days ago that he was starting it the next day (which would have been Friday), maybe he just forgot, as he has posted in many other threads since then.

Don't fret guys... KP are going to have this start today, with results up at 3pm ET/12 noon PT/8pm GMT/11pm Moscow time (couldn't resist that last one :D)

I've been in many other threads as Nikea pointed out, and furthermore am also hosting a cricket international tournament which has been slow to take off for myriad reasons. I'm starting that today as well, so it's a HUGE day for Progressan sport!

"Old time hockey, bar the door, clear the track, it's all out war!"-From "Time to Go" by the Dropkick Murpheys. Check this title out, it's a song entirely about Old-Time Hockey off their Blackout CD.

^^ :D I've only heard one song from them and that only because it was on a computer game soundtrack - Never Alone, I think.

Results time in an hour!
