Conf. of Libertarians regional discussion of UN issues

Tropical Montana

To all members of the UN in the region of the Confederation of Libertarians:

Please post below as to your opinions on any of the resolutions up for vote in the UN. The idea here is to bring up pertinent concerns regarding the resolutions, asking questions and making comments. Once you have decided on your stand on any resolution, state clearly whether you are FOR or AGAINST the resolution, and give your reasons as clearly and succinctly as possible.

As promised, the UN delegate from Tropical Montana holds itself accountable to the membership and pledges to vote with the majority of nations expressing their views in this forum, on the main regional page, or in private telegrams. But for transparency and logistics reasons, we prefer that you use this forum to voice your opinions on UN issues. It will make it easier to keep track of everyone.

Thank you for your considerate participation.

Like many UN resolutions the goal is desirable but the method used causes the cure to be worst than the illness.

The resoultion: Alternative Fuels - A resolution to increase the quality of the world's environment, at the expense of industry. The "at the expense of industry" part is where I have a problem with the resolution.

1) "Alternative fuels such as hydrogen are clean with virtually no environmental side effects". While Balligomingo is a major supporter of using hydrogen as a fuel, the fact of the matter is, no one knows what the impact of hundreds of millions of cars spewing all that water vapor into the air will be.

2) "Alternative fuels will also be cheaper and easier to produce". If this where a true statement then market forces would have dropped fossil fuels long ago.

3) "requiring automobile manufacturers to spend a minimum of 1% of their profits toward alternative fuel research". If the board of directors of a given company supports this fine. If a government wants to create incentives fine. If the govenment wants to tax industry to support a line of research (and the voters agree) fine. But the UN should not try to force a line of research on the entire world.

Balligomingo votes NO to this resolution.
