Metzengerstein

Having recently ratified our constitution, the nation of Metzengerstein sends greetings to the rest of the world and offers hope for a better tomorrow for all of its citizens.
Pop. approx. 6 million
Metzengerstein is a beautiful country situated high in the Ragged Mountains. It is an old land of gothic architecture, crumbling castles, and sprawling manor houses. Although its early history was wrought with strife, most of the old torture houses filled with rats and devious implements of physical and psychological torture have been torn down. Only a few remain, which have been turned into museums to remind the citizens of Metzengerstein of the nation's barbaric past and to demonstrate how the nation has grown and matured.
Metzengerstein was also the site of several recurring outbreaks of the disease known as the Red Death, but recent medical developments promise a vaccine forthcoming. A powerful maelstrom immediately off the rugged Metzengerstein coastline is a danger to shipping, but has protected the country on numerous occasions from sea-borne invasions.
The capitol of Metzengerstein is the city of Valdemar, wherein the seat of government is the House of Usher. The House of Usher is an elected body, the members of which are voted into office every 6 years.
The currency of Metzengerstein is the poe, named after the nation's founder and first king. The national animal is the black cat, and the national bird is the raven.
Our ruling body, the House of Usher, situated in the mountain capitol of Valdemar, is dedicated to equality for all citizens of the world. We wish to dismiss rumors that vast torture chambers filled with rats, pits, and pendulums are still in operation. Those were implements of the past to which our people and our Queen say "Nevermore!" Other outlandish rumors of orangutans trained to kill our political dissidents are likewise false.
Thank you for giving ear to a new nation.
