The Gate Corporation: A dilemma of profit.

OOC: Little OOC aside to help people understand just what the hell I'm talking about here. I've had this around for quite sometime, but I've never really had any ideas for RPing with it till recently.
The gate corporation owns and maintains a network of P.D.S. gates to assist smaller vehicles incapable of using faster drives to get around the solar system. (Anyone who's seen Bebop knows what I'm talking about).

I've had the network in place since way back whenever the hell last spring. I've decided to do some RP with it instead of just letting it sit around.

If you think I'm wanking or something, fine, I don't give a bloody f***, its your loss.

And no, the technology is not for sale, don't ask. And no, you can't transport your uber ships of f*** ing doom through it, its intended for smaller ships and there is no way you're fitting a capital grade warship through one, don't ask and don't try.

How do the "gates" work?
Phase Difference Space
The science of Spatial Alternation Dynamics is based on the theory that our universe phases in and out of existence, blinking on and off every 1/48th second. According to the hypothesis, our entire existence disappears every 1/48th second, to be momentarily replaced with another dimension, known as Phase Difference Space. Since Phase Difference Space is 1/240th the size of our own universe, it is possible to travel 240 times as fast within it, assuming that one can both enter and exit the new dimension at the appropriate times.

The devices used to enter the new dimension are known as Phase Difference Space Gates. By entering them, travel times are greatly accelerated, reducing the Earth-to-Titan transit time to 1/240th of normal operating time for a vessel for said distance. These future equivalents of 20th century Earth’s “highways” are operated by the Gate Corporation, which charges a toll on all traffic.

IC:

Tyler Duryea picks his rotund body out his oversized and overlly comfortable chair and stares down the long black table, adjusting his glasses in an effort to see the board members in the dim light. The Gate Corp.'s logo hovered above the table.
"Ladies and Gentlemen of the board, we have a problem."
He points a remote at the holo-projector and clicks a button. The picture switches to a hologram of a gate.
"I assume you all know what this is"

Mike Savis raises a timid hand "A Guyer PDSG-03 Mark Five sir."

Duryea nods, "And what can you tell us about it?"
Mike scratches his head, "Well sir, the Mark Five utilizes Dr. Guyer's DPM coil design to..."
"Not that Savis, what can you tell us about its usefullness."

Mike looks perplexed, "None sir, we just got through replacing them with the Mark 6's and 7's."

Duryea frowns. "And thats our problem, we have a couple hundred useless gates floating in our stockyard near Saturn. What in the hell are we going to do with them?"

Andrea Savois sits up straight and taps her pen against the table. "The obvious answer is to scrap them for recyclable material. But I presume you have another idea, Tyler?"

"Christ, I wish it was that easy. R and D is telling me that may not be an option, something about the maufacturing process making the material expensive as hell to recycle. No body wants to buy them if they can't recycle them cheaply."

"And then I have these 'Space Warriors'" saying the name with obvious disdain, "who promise to make our lives living hell if we pollute the solar system. Goddamn asteroid hugging hippies."

"Other thoughts?"

Andrea shrugs, chewing on the end of her pen as she thinks. "Nothing immediate comes to mind. Obviously we can't sell them off. What's their projected life expectancy? Have they lived passed their maintenance cycle? We may have no choice but to scrap them anyway.

"The only alternative I can think of would be to attempt a long-term approach. Strap some booster rockets onto them and launch them toward interstellar space. Once they reach another star, we could conceivably use them to facilitate research or even colonisation."

Dukakas, the resident smart guys perks up.
"That might have been a good plan, but they have passed their acceptable safe operating life cycle. It would be some pretty shitty PR to have interstellar travellers die because of our gates."
He looks down. "Plus the distance and location callibrations would be an unrelenting bitch."

"Why don't we just sell 'em to the TYCS? They've bought decommed gates for their manuevers training areas before."

A naval liason shakes his head.
"Ha, the TYCS has more gates than it knows what to do with. The training courses are stock full."

"Altough I have to admit, its pretty damn fun to race around between those things."

Duryea looked up suddenly.
"What did you say?"

"The navy has too..."

"No, " Duryea interupted, "after that."

The liason looks about confused.
"It's fun to race between them."

Duryea smiled.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I have an idea."
