Background-

First settled in the late C16th by European (mainly British) explorers, New Eastgate became quickly isolated from the outside world. This isolation owing largely to the vast distances involved and greatly distracting struggles with the formidable landscape and savage Polynesian population was incidental rather than political.
To-day the western states struggle to civilise the Godless natives in the north and east as civil conflict bubbles following the continued refusal of the peripheries (Waylu and Great Hoode) to recognise the king, or even to accept the law of the church.

Geography et cetera-

Location-
Island in the Pacific, on the equator south of Hawaii.

Area (land, estimated)-
Around 3,920,000 square miles, or 6,300,000 square kilometres. This estimate covers the entire continent, Western States, Peripheries, native, and virgin lands.

Area Comparative-
Around two-thirds the size of China or the USA, not far from twice the size of India or three times the size of Greenland.

Terrain-
Low rolling hills and shallow valleys in the west, mountainous in the south east and hugely so in the north, vast plains in the east.

Climate-
Mostly temperate in the west, approaching tropical north until mountains create much colder conditions, relatively cold winters in the south and in the far north, semi-arid across the eastern Great Efferuus Flats

Natural resources-
Coal, iron ore, timber, fish, arable land, gold, silver.
(Also natural gas, uranium, and oil, for which the nation is yet to find any significant uses, as well as many other undiscovered minerals and such).

Natural hazards-
Moderate tornadoes in east, mild earthquakes in north, some flooding.

Clades Mountains- These almost wholly unexplored peaks dominate the north except for a strip of potentially bountiful forest (the Arcanus) on the east coast. Mount Caligo rises an estimated 20,000 feet plus. The Gran Desavi river is the largest in the land and could accommodate sizeable vessels. The Great Efferus Flats extend well over 1,500 miles east from any half serious Eastgater settlement, and prospectors believe that the native “infested” lands possess considerable mineral, animal and arable resources.

People-

Population- 12,624,000 according to the recent pan-state census

Ethnic groups-
British/Irish(/Walmingtonian) ~80%, other European 20%

Religion-
Catholic (official). The Eastgate Catholic Church is dissatisfied with what it has learned of the modern Church and of present day Rome, and tends to take a more traditional hard-line stance.

Language-
English, official; Latin widely taught to a basic degree amongst literate classes; many regional (English) dialects have evolved almost unrecognisably, largely amongst the illiterate classes

Literacy-
(Age 15 and over can read and write)
Male- 55%
Female- 35%
Total population- 44%

Current affairs-

Eastgate is enjoying a revolution of science and industry following the Union Crown Gala in Port Gavin, at which inventor Charlton Arnold fully displayed his locomotive steam engine. Increasing contact with the outside world promises a wealth of commercial opportunity.
On a darker note the three modernising royalist Christian states in the west face the prospect of all out war with the periphery states of Waylu and Great Hoode after the massacre of a King’s Militia detachment by Hoodeian ruffians at Fort Ludele.

(ooc: Yes, you may be noticing a complete disregard by New Eastgate for the native population who apparently don’t count as discoverers of the little continent. I shan't be accepting any invasions by more advanced nations with the justification of Eastgate's backwards society (one nation, since banned, already tried that one), because that's just boring..uh, and my friend has a..billion star destroyers! So there! But as is evidenced by our export market, Eastgate is a modern nation in era if not technology, so you can see us and get invovled..)

ooc:Well, we are listed as an anarchy- as many men, so many opinions. I had not initially planned such a seemingly democratic out-look for the nation, but meh, one has to stay in character, eh?

Did you know?: Hunting of the the peacock, New Eastgate's national animal, is considered an offence against the crown, and is as such punishable by hanging.

Of course this law it hardly likely to be enforced in Waylu or Great Hoode, as the periphery states do not recognise the king's authority.

Royal Herald- Pan-state/continental census reveals a shocking truth!

Since the early days of Eastgate's scientific revolution there have been efforts across the nation towards compilation of a fair census. The recent return to the Western States of General Stark and his heroic 1st Goston Rifles as well as work done by brave and intrepid prospectors working from Gregoria have combined to add frightening new elements to the survey.

The entire Federation, Peripheries included, has been revealed to contain some twelve-million six-hundred and twenty-four thousand citizens plus upwards of twelve thousand indentured Polynesian labourers.

However, and most disturbingly, the entire population of the continent of New Eastgate is now estimated to be in the order of sixty three million persons. It would appear that we in Eastgate are outnumbered five fold against our savage neighbours, and that the God-fearing are almost closer to one amongst six when the blasphemy of the Peripheries is considered.

Of course the Royal Herald is prone to reliance upon sources of questionable merit in the publication of its reports.

General Horace Stark, for example, appears in all but the most star-struck eyes a self-important buffoon with a military title that was granted by his own hand, and is for the purposes of politics and propaganda (gosh, that's pleasantly alliterative) unlikely to be removed. The massive degree of his boasting in regards to the 1st Rifles' adventure in Waylu is at once quite widely suspected and quite difficult to absolutely discredit.

The prospectors working east of Gregoria have much to gain from frightening others when it comes to the virgin territories yet beyond Eastgater exploitation. Space-capable nations certainly could observe the very limited nature of Polynesian agricultural infrastructure upon which the large increase in their estimated population was based. Most tribes are still heavily reliant upon hunting of wild and often migratory fauna and their populations, though higher than previously realised, certainly do not amount to the millions now widely reported for individual communities.

None the less, the Western States are increasingly gripped by a siege mentality as their reported 9.724 million perceive themselves encircled by 2.9 million outlaws in the anarchic Peripheries and anything up to fifty million savages beyond that.
