I'm posting this for anyone out there who is new and doesn't know about this great tool or has lost the link. By clicking on the link below, you will be directed to a page that will tell you how to formulate your request for information.

here's the configuration I'm using to determine how much I have to spend in the stores:
nation=Aleph_Strata&defenseprovided=1&defense=10&militarybudget=1 (http://www.pipian.com/stuffforchat/gdpcalc.php?nation=Aleph_Strata&defenseprovided=1&defense=10&militarybudget=1)
(I take 25% of my military budget for new spending - [budget]*[.25]=25%)

and I take 1% of my population for my active millitary than I can deploy
(the other percentage of my military is support and command - [pop]*[.01]=1%)

These numbers are at the low end of the spending and troop scale, you can probably increase them a bit.

Wow, I have really underestimated my military capabilities.

Using the same percentages as the above poster:

Bantz Gross Domestic Product
Population: 1,679,000,000
Civil Rights: Outlawed
Economy: Frightening
GDP per Capita: $35,000
GDP: $58,765,000,000,000 Not sure I even know how to say that number :)
National Budget: $13,327,902,000,000

Percentage of GDP Spent on Defense: 2.27%
Percentage of Budget Spent on Defense: 10%
Military Budget: $1,332,790,200,000

Enough for:
42,854 F-15Es, or...
66,639 Su-34s, or...
70,893 F-16s, or...
121,162 MiG 29s, or...
309,951 M1A2 Abrams, or...
444,263 T-90s, or...
2,274,386,006 M-16s, or...
4,442,634,000 AK47s

And that's only using 2.27% of GDP. Good times.

Or I have overestimated mine. But I think 10% of my budget is reasonable. This would be less for left-leaning nations and more for right-leaning nations or dictatorships I would think.

Attn. Experienced Players: Do you agree with me on this 10% thing?

Okay, so I went back and found this thread (OMG gravedigging! Someone ban everyone quick! :)). Was actually hoping to get some answers on the above question. 10% seems reasonable to me assuming you are a fairly militarized nation, which mine is.

I would personally think that the truly important number is % of GDP though. Your national budget is exactly that, it represents government revenue only without reference to private sector economics (assuming you have a strong private sector, which my nation does - different considerations might arise if you are a communist nation). GDP on the other hand represents overall economic activity within a nation. If you look at the difference between the results in percentage of GDP between my nation and Aleph's it is almost 2% even though we both set it to 10% of budget.

DOh... doorbell... more on this....

Here are some figures on military expendatures as %GDP (in real life):

United Kingdom - 2.32% (2002)
Finland - 2% (FY98/99)
United States - 3.2% (FY99 est.)
China - 4.3% (FY02)
Afghanistan - 7.7% (FY02)
Israel - 8.75% (FY02)
The Bahamas - 0.7% (FY99)

I got these from the CIA World Factbook (check the country you think you are related to!):

Here's another interesting script from the same website. This one should help warring nations decide things quickly -- very quickly!
