For millenia, the Homo Mare Maris (Latin for Man, Sea) had lived and prospered beneath the waves. They formed a free and equal democracy long before Homo Sapiens (Latin for Man, Wise. AKA the Human Race) had developed the printing press. They had split from the rest of humanity at the time of the Roman Empire, and they still spoke Latin. They were also more physiologically advanced: They had touch-telepathy and limited touch healing, they were physically more robust and strong, and were more resistant to infection or disease. There was, of course, that one major difference, the one thing that, more than anything else, warranted their classifications as a different species from Homo Sapiens: Their ability to breathe the oxygen from water. They had no gills, no. They breathed the water in, where their lungs removed the hydrogen, leaving oxygen for them to breathe. They were truly an amphibious species, although they could only spend so much time without a oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere before the nitrogen they naturally stored (Just like humans, they cannot breathe pure oxygen without health dangers.) ran out... although this was months. They needed very little nitrogen to stay alive. They treated their citizens well, but they were conquerers too. They had gained dominion over much of the waters... and were allied with those who controlled the rest, the cetaceans. Now that their underwater position, the Council of Citizens had decided to make contact with their brothers, the Homo Sapiens...

In Grotto City, a gigantic underwater cave complex where the air pressure was high enough to keep the water out, Proeliator 5th Class Augustus Fortitudo marched his men along, their spearguns in hand, their armored wetsuits on. They had been selected to escort Consul Lucius Aliquantum and Consul Marcus Prudens to the surface, to make contact. His troops numbered 100 men total. The consuls wore dark blue "robes." They appeared to be robes, but the cloth was fixed into place to stop it from impeding their progress while swimming. They ordered Proeliator 5th Class Fortitudo to order his men out. All togetehr, the 103 men stepped out of the Grand Portal, the largest opening to the cave complex, and into the ocean. They began swimming to the surface.
After approximately an hour, they broke the surface, and walked onto an unclaimed beach, and set out to find the Homo Sapiens.
