Some of these are part of current stickies, and some are not. All of these should be grouped together as a general guide to NS warfare, for both new and experienced nations. Please feel free to expound on subjects not covered (naval and airforce organization for example) IN A NEW THREAD TO BE LINKED HERE (please, please, please). Lets try and keep this clean from debate about specifics. (comments are welcome, but lets try and keep this as a reference, please!)

NS and RP specific stuff: guide threads on how to RP a war here on NS.

Sorry, my bad. The thread title derives from an excellent, excellent book by James Dunnigan by the same title. The threads theme sort of derives from another James Dunnigan book How To Make War. I can highly reccomend both. 8)

I agree. There have been... what, five NTALOTU nations asking about war that I've seen? Probably more.

Great stuff here and it has definatly influenced my decisions on several aspects but there is one area which I am struggling with, it's the whole support issue for every branch of my forces.
How many personnel are needed to keep an aircraft/vehicle/vessel in combat-ready condition? I've seen in other reads that having X number of support personnel to each combat soldier but that doesn't realy provide accuracy, I want to know exactly the number of personnel at the minimum needed to maintain aircraft/vehicles/vessels.
Not an easy undertaking I am quite sure but there is very little information on it which is why I turn to all of you for answers.

I'll probably do a thread on it in the near future, but it does vary greatly, and the proportion of support to combat personnel increases as the formation gets larger. Here's a few small ones though (you should have no trouble figuring out combat personnel):
F-15E fighter squadron w/ 18 PAA (~24 total aircraft): 280 personnel
F-16: 243
F-15: 252
B-1B bomber squadron w/ 6 PAA (~11 total aircraft): 280 personnel
Armored battalion w/ 58 M1A1: 609 personnel.

For some good information, try going through Globalsecurity. Here's a few areas to get started:
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/army/index.html - the opfor (opposing force) field manuals toward the bottom of that section don't give the exact troop numbers, but will give a pretty good idea of the support personnel needed through the number of support vehicles listed
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/usmc/to/index.html
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/index.html - especially check the air force and navy sections thoroughly, as they will often give approximate or specific personnel numbers for various units. As you'll see, I definately have my work cut out for me :P

Yet another one of these threads. Do you all not realise already that what you percieve as good RP is not what everyone else might? Stop these threads. The current stickies are good enough we dont need more spam.

Good day.

Yes. "Yet another one of these threads". No one required you to read it, and AFAIK no one requires you to RP according to any of these. If you don*t want to play that way, don*t. Some of us do. This appears to be of some interest to others, so please ignore it.
As far as the current stickies go, only 2 of these are in the collected stickies. IMHO, we could go with just 2 or 3 collected stickies in each forum: RP, mod squad, and IRC in NS; and war, economics, and trade in II.

Good day.

You may wish to apply that second sentence to your own post. A lot of people do find this information useful. If you are not one of them, feel free to ignore this thread.

The reason some players like this information is as an aid to their roleplaying. If you don't know the rules, you can't take advantage of the loopholes in those rules. If you know how the real world's technology works, you can take tactical and strategic advantage of the limitations of that technology.

A lot of the actual combat during WWII was directed at logistical support rather than military units. If you state that you're sending 25,000 soldiers to invade a country, the other country would be wise to try and destroy the logistical support for those troops. This makes for good roleplaying (assuming the players are decent at it to begin with) because it creates a realistic cycle of move and countermove- just like the real thing.

In lieu of adding new stickies, these threads can be added to existing stickies. If you don't like them, don't read 'em. A lot of people do like 'em, and they're the target audience.

Deal with it.
