The History of the Terran Republic and it's Space Navy (TRSN)

The Dawning of the Space Age
As the Unified Earth Government expanded into space, it assumed the name "The Terran Republic". After all, humans were only one species. Where would AI, or genetically engineered semi-humans fit in? Therefore, it was decided that Terran was a more acceptable term to refer to one of the many species calling Terra home. The early years of space travel were peaceable, as only the Government could afford to expand, but eventually, the problems emerged. As Corporations competed, and the prices dropped, radical groups began to reach out as well. Colonies fought among themselves, and the TRSN was formed as sort of police force, keeping the rival colonies in line. With relative ease, the well funded and supported TRSN put down the attempts at rebellion, and humanity smugly assumed that all was well. Then there was first contact.

The first alien race the Terrans encountered called itself the Ahstun'Dv'alla, or at least that is what the scribes took it as such. Both races, stunned by the accidental collision of the two starships in deep space, reacted with surprising xenophobia. In the aftermath of the war, the TRSN was the victor, bombarding the Homeworld with their Fusion Cannons. It was only after the war that the scholars put together the information and realized that neither species had wanted the war. An innocent species was immolated for no reason. The TRSN, faced with pressure to halt the process of Orbital Bombardment, banned its Fusion Cannons and removed Ortillery from their doctrine, except in extreme scenarios.

The Artifact
The next several hundred years were relative peace as the Terrans, scarred by their accidental war, made contact and peace with several other races. Then, in the year 2731, a science team in the Tau Ceti system made a discovery that shook the Republic to its core. An Artifact was found from an older species that answered the Fermi Paradox, on why the galaxy did not teem with life. There was another species out there, in the beyond. It was called the Shadow, and the images on the Artifact, when decoded, revealed the horror. This Shadow consumed everything before it, feeding on the Life Energy of any being it confronted. It enslaved and destroyed and consumed all in its darkness, twisting the good to evil and destroying all. The Republic rushed ahead research to adance the TRSN in this coming crisis, trying to locate and decode more of these Artifacts from this Elder race.

All this was in secrecy, hidden from public view. The public complained at the military boosts, never knowing what was coming. As more Artifacts were uncovered, it soon became ominously clear. The Universe worked in cycles, and that it was not one Elder Race but many Elder Races, spanning back beyond any recorded human time. Each had risen, and been destroyed in turn. But each had left pieces of their technology, hidden among the wreckage, a bit of technology here, poetry there, theory here, history there. These races survived in these Artifacts, protected by Guardians ranging from Psychic Imprints to AI Constructs... all left for one purpose... to aide a race that would finally confront the Shadow.

To the Terran Republic, there was one option. The Shadow was coming, following the cyclical schedule promised by these Artifacts. The Terrans had to fight them. Together with their allies, they began to rush ahead, utilizing the Elder Technology they barely understood, but which promised them the powers to bend time, to fight the Shadow outside their own dimension. The people were informed of the coming threat, and some believed. Most didn't. But the TRSN did, and that was enough. The Jump Gates were constructed, using the Temporal Paths the Elders spoke of to move across space and time. In the early days, thousands of ships died before the Republic learned that the Gates were fixed, and only opened at certain times. By 3210, the Republic was almost ready. They uncovered another revolutionary piece of data from an Artifact... certain indivuals could survive the forces of the Void between dimensions, even turn those forces to their own desires. Using the selection and training processes detailed by the Artifacts, the TRSN trained the first generation of Rifters, beings who could move through the Void and tame the unseen forces within.

These Rifters would prove invaluable in the coming war, which broke right on schedule.

The Galactic War
In the year 3276, the Shadow appeared, cutting through the Outer Systems with contemptous ease. They pushed all the way to Centauri, where they met the TRSN Grand Fleet. In a massive, last ditch, Space Battle, the TRSN Grand Fleet collided with the main Shadow Armada. In that three month battle, over a million ships died. The Terran Shipyards pumped out ship after ship across the galaxy, crewed them with volunteers (There were no conscripts after the peoples of the galaxy watched the Shadow consume the people on their Viewers. These beings were the antithesis of all every being knew. They ranged from the Vampiric Dreadlords to the Enslaved Armies of former beings, to war beasts once sentient, to horrors beyond comprehension, pure darkness.), and threw them into the grinder.

The Shadow stalled, and the TRSN Fleets advanced back towards the Shadow's Gate, reclaiming planet after planet. Billions died by the day, and for the first time in recorded history, population growth dropped into the negative hundreds. Systems were destroyed. In all of this, the Rifters showed their power. They launched through the Void, "teleporting" amid the Shadow forces, and unleashed the pure powers they channeled. They moved with time and against it, bending reality to their wants and needs, then summon the fleet to their Temporal Beacon. Their reputation grew with their accomplishments, until it was believed they could hold armies by themselves, Only they could fight the creature that the Republic could only refer to "demons", beings who existed beyond our own trivial reality and expressed themselves in pure power. The Rifters could fight them. They could Forge Gates and bring through the stranded TRSN Fleets. They could survive seemingly lethal attacks. They could bend anything to their wills, perform miracles. And they were doomed.

For their powers exacted a terrible toll. With every use of power or Jump through the Void, they became more in tune with the forces they used and less with the material universe. They grew more powerful with each passing moment, but eventually, that power would consume them. The rest of the military looked upon the Rifters as demigods and freaks. At one moment, they loved them for saving the Republic, they hated them for fear of their powers, and they pitied them for their inevitable hideous demise. Some Rifters, spurned by those they saved and loved, turned to the Shadow, becoming the Beast they once fought. Others went insane from the horrors they lived, the legions of dead on their shoulders. Others simply became one with the powers they channelled, shredding their own bodies in the pure power and being erased from this reality. The stronger their Will, the longer they lasted, but the end was inevitable. None lived beyond their thirtieth year.

As the War drew to a close, the Republic came to a decision. Even faced with the carnage of 200 years of war, they knew the Shadow would return. They would have to fight the Shadow in every dimension, in every time, until this darkness was destroyed. It was simply survival. The Shadow could not exist with any other race, so no other race could survive with the Shadow. The Republic began to expand across realities, gaining allies and attempting to stop the Shadow's xenocidal advance. The War continued for another thousand years, each side trying to out-expand the other, to find new dimensions to conquer or save. There was stalemate. Then came Reaver.

Time Reaver: Salvation or Destruction
His original name is now unknown, because it was burned away by the brightness of his glory. He was a simple man, discovered in Secondary Dimension Theta-Epsilon. He carried the Rifter genes inside him, and he was whisked away to Terra. Like all other potential Rifters, he was shown the powers he would wield, and the burden he would bear, and finally, the enemy he would fight. Like all other potential Rifters, he accepted the burden, upon viewing his foe. He endured the rigorous training, sensory deprivation, and expanded himself into the Void, tapping the Power within... and he controlled it like no other ever could. The Void itself bent to his will, forming about him, hardening its power into a weapon that none could comprehend before or after he used it. It was sheer power, a lance of energy and nothingness that would strip a being from time. Dubbed "The Time Reaver" by the Intelligence services, its name soon became his, the ubitquous Reaver. And the Intelligence knew who this man was. He had been prophesied by the Artifacts as the one man who could end the Shadow.. but there was a twist. In doing so, he would become the Shadow, and begin the cycle anew. And so, arrangements where made to kill him after he completed his profesied destiny.

Every Rifter has a bond, a temporal attatchment that moored them to reality. While on half of this pair was in reality, the other could move freely without worry, because his or her "Tether" was intact. These Tethers were bound in the closest way, becoming almost one person. The Tether could not be created easily, it had to be forged with ritual and mutual stress and success. If the Bonding failed, both died. If, at any point, one partner died, the other perished with them. The plan was simple. Bond Reaver with a loyal agent who would kill him/herself after Reaver defeated the Shadow. Reaver knew nothing of this, simply proceeded with his ordered missions.

He served a tour of duty as a soldier, then as an officer, as prescribed. Then he was to meet his Tether, Bond, and emerge a full Rifter, ready to pursue his hidden destiny. But something went wrong. The Transit ship came under attack by the Shadow, and was forced to make a blind jump. Reaver used his powers to Forge a Gate from nothing, a feat never seen before or after. The ship emerged, damaged, in an unknown dimension, where another race battled the Shadow. In this parallel reality, the Humans within had never advanced into technology, but instead used some mystical form of Void energy to survive. The TRSN surprised the Shadow Forces, and together with their new allies, pushed them back. In the process, a strange event happened. Reaver Bound with another person, a woman known only as Sorceress, like him, her name was erased by her Intelligence label.

High Command was worried by this turn of events, but they readied other methods to eliminate him. They planted an Intelligence Agent with Psyonic Abilities to aide him, but to kill him in the end. The war continued for years, and Reaver grew in power. But then, a Gate was discovered, a Gate into the Shadow's own reality. It was unstable, lasting only for another year, but this was the chance of an eternity. A chance to destroy the Shadow. Every force was called up, every soldier readied. Trillions of beings from multiple realities readied, thousands of fleets stood by. Every Rifter was assembled into the Temporal Expeditionary Force (TEF). The word was given, and the assault began, dubbed "Storming Babylon".

Storming Babylon
The TEF hit first on multiple planets, deploying their beacons and calling forth the fleets. The TRSN, in overall command, got to take the homeworld itself, dubbed "Exeunt". It was dubbed Armagedon by the crews that survived, for it more resembled the Biblical battle than anything seen before. The Shadow Fleets fell back almost at once to defend their Emperor, and the Allied Ships followed, pausing only long enough to annihilate the planets with antimatter. The fleets met over Exeunt in the greatest battle in history, outscaling even the Battle of Centauri. The ships numbered more than any man could count, the fleets themselves crossed into the hundreds of thousands, and more came every day to both sides. Below, under the planetary shield, the TEF hit, deployed beacons, and summoned the armies. Armies of trillions advanced on defenders of trillions. The entire TEF met the most horrendous of the Nightmare Legions the Shadow presented.

Weeks, months passed, and the remainder of the Allied Forces closed on the Dark Citadel, breaking into its walls. The atmosphere was black from the rubble and smoke, and no communications had been heard from either fleet in weeks. The armies of trillions numbered in the dozens now, and the TEF was gone, with only Reaver and Aurora alive. They entered the inner sanctum, confronted the Shadow's Emperor, the beast behind the slaughter of uncounted lives over an infinity. On the throne sat a man, smiling knowingly. He calmly smiled at the advancing duo and the surviving squads holding the great doors. What he said must have revealed to Reaver the fate awaiting him, for only that could explain his actions. The old man/thing stated, "Destroy me, and begin anew this cycle."

Reaver, his temporal weapon raised, checked his swing. The sizzling energy hovered near the man's throat, but he did not flinch. "What?" the soldier asked. The weapon fell from his hand. "Never." The soldiers froze, befuddled. They called out to him to strike down this Evil, to destroy the Shadow forever. But Reaver turned away. "This is done. He is powerless now. To destroy him would only free his evil." Reaver closed his eyes, the years of war catching him, and he dropped to his knees, crying, his weapon turning to the energy from which it was forged, then vanished. On the throne, the old man was dying slowly, crumpling in on himself, his face twisted in hate and anger.

The Aftermath and A New Era
The Darkness shattered under a new, brilliant sunlight, the Shadow's power broken. The Gates opened, and Aurora managed to return the survivors to Terra. When recovered, Reaver asked only that no one go near the Shadow dimension, for it would release the forces anew. Then he made one request... to return home.

With the Shadow's fall, the Void no longer lent its power to any Rifters the Republic could train, and so Reaver and Aurora, once again mere human beings, were returned to their own dimensions, which were never revealed. The TRSN, battered by the War, was reduced to one battleship and three carriers with half loads or less. The Shadow was gone, but the Republic had barely survived. In the aftermath, it was reduced to Terra, with the population cut down into the millions. The war had lasted nearly two thousand years, and the rebuilding was not going to be easy.

It has been over five hundred years since the end of the War, and the Republic has reestablished several small colonies on former worlds. The Centauri has a population of thirty thousand, and Tau Ceti has a mere ten thousand. The TRSN is no where near its height, with only ten fleets in operation at the moment. But peace reigns, and art and culture have never been higher. The people of the galaxy bask in the glory of Peace, not known in two millenia. But the Shadow is returning.

Into the Beyond... Again
Someone has broken the Seal on the Shadow Gate, and the effects are being felt. The Rifter powers are beginning to re-manifest. The Psy Corps reports great disturbances in reality, and a coming darkness. The Republic has begun a rush to remilitarize, and Chancellor Trevayne has assumed Dictator-like powers, declaring martial law in all territories.

Strategists predict that the Shadow, though growing rapidly, will not dare to attack the Republic directly again, but will instead expand elsewhere. Therefore, the TRSN has deployed scattered units to different dimensions, in the hope of gaining advance knowledge of the Shadow's attacks and to help the Indiginous races fight this threat. In the aftermath of the first War, several species vanished completely, and one entire dimension was collapsed by the Shadow. The Republic needs allies, and in its current state, could not hope to face the Darkness alone. So the TRSN is currently scattered, gathering allies and information for the war that it knows cannot be averted. But maybe, it can gain the time needed to rebuild, and destroy the Shadow completely.

The TRSN Arrives in this Reality
In this reality, labelled by the Republic as Primary Dimension Nu-Sigma, several forces are currently deployed and operational. No trace of the Shadow has been found. Yet...

OOC: The TRSN only plays the forces in Dimension NS, not the entire Navy, or the Republic, much less its Allies.

Might I suggest making a link to this in the World Factbook Thread (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=74382&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=)?

You may want to include all info about your nation in this post though, like population stats, geography etc.
