NationStates Ice Hockey League (NHL) -- the Don Cherry Cup

Kalaallit Nunaat

NationStates Hockey League (NHL)

The second Cherry Cup will be played by a division-based system. Each team will play each other team in its division. The top four teams in each conference (including both division winners) will go through to playoffs. Conference champions play off for the coveted Don Cherry Cup.

Scores are generated by random numbers influenced by rank. Each team gets 12 chances to score, each attack gets a random number from 1-100. That number is compared to the other team's defence number, 900-rank. New teams are ranked 12.

Will defending champion SterlingIce repeat? Or will it be one of the other top teams, like Soviet Haaregrad or General Susan Aglukark's Greenlanders, or even the wacky Christians from Quinntonia? Or will one of the weaker teams surprise us and themselves by pulling off a miracle on ice?

Ihis: That's jus' because Xha*, have ya ever seen a better goalie?
Kase: That wasn' even intentionally. I simply had the luck to fall on the puck several times or catched it unintenionally while falling.

Walmingtonian wireless-suites resounded with the sound of a nation's jaws dropping as the Red Bears scored time after time between the right posts.

True, the Cassowaries would probably be the easiest contest the team could hope to face in their conference, but the nation's gradually rising fan base was vaguely aware that these fellows played in the last cup. Walmington loved upsets, no matter how slight.

The Red Bears quickly found a sponsor in one Mr.Rain, a businessman with links to Stockley Motors, and would now go into their second match with actual hockey gear! Red jerseys rather than old brown coats, hockey sticks rather than something that looked as if it might possibly have been stolen from the local manor's polo club, and maybe even skates rather than old boots with metal plates screwed hurridly over the treads.

It would hardly be the latest or greatest kit, but it was a moral and ego boost if nothing else.

Hurrah the Red Bears!

An Iansislean public hungry for good news of any sort was disappointed as the Gulls skated to a 3-2 loss against Caer Pugetia.

Head coach and general manager Steve Martinson was reportedly furious at his team’s performance, and vanished into the team's locker room soon after the final buzzer.

Star right winger Martin St. Amour also stormed off the field, perhaps in anger at being called for cross checking late in the third, leaving captain B.J. MacPherson, who assisted on left winger Kevin St. Jacques’ power play goal in the second, to deal with the press.

"Obviously we're not happy,” MacPherson shrugged, “But we’ll just have to manage. It’s only one game, after all. We can still get the cup.”

Rookie left winger Clayton Read scored the Gulls’ other goal, a futile gesture trailing 3-1 late in the third. It was the youngster’s first goal as a member of the team, and even the loss couldn’t dampen his spirits.

“I came up hard of the goalie,” he gushed, “and just snapped it right in there! I think some of the other guys had given up, but that sure woke us up!”

MacPherson was quick to reprimand his young winger. “This team never gives up. We’ve just had some rotten luck, like the ref’s missing that call when Mark (Woolf) was tripped driving on the goal. I think this side is one of the strongest in the tournement, and I know we’ll start showing that soon.”

Afterwards, MacPherson insisted it was time for a team meeting, and the few Gulls remaining to talk to the press vanished into their locker room.

From the Sherbrooke Sentinel, November 18 2003

Jean-Guy Reno, the Annihilator's Centre, scored with 42 seconds left to tie the shooting match with the Trevorland Porcupines last night, taking the game into a breathless, and scoreless overtime match. Leon Perrault, the Sherbrooker's right wing, scored the only other goal of the night for Sherbrooke in the first period in the final seconds of a hard-fought power play.
"We played a very good game, I think," said the Annihilator's coach Michael Rivet, "we put out our hearts and sweat into the game, but [the Porcupines] just really went out there and really proved themselves. What more can you say?"
18-11-2003, 17:54
There was more than slight air of relif after an amazing start to Englesreichs first NHL season (if you call relif jumping around screaming like little girls). they sucessfuly beat Tranquillitis 3-2 it took 2 great early goals from Center I.Will Smakuindahed to put tranquillia under early pressure, but they came back and by the 3rd quarter it was 2-2. It was down to some brilliant keeping by Ivan von Carstien to keep the scores even. Then just when we were going to accept the draw, there was an amazing play from what looked to be the last face-off of the game, when with the last touch of the game Petr Lashiminov smacked the puck through a forest of players to score the winner, this then resulted in mass street parties in Englesriech's capital Red Star City, the country has gone hockey mad and the reichchancellor declared today a national holiday.

i am pleased to see such a positive reaction ton the competition, i am wondering if the next tournament will be along the same lines or different.

I would like to think that based on the majority oif my past dealings with everyone here, that the next tournament may well be on the same lines. Most of the people here seem to be very cordial and welcoming.

From the Daily Kangaroo:

PROGRESSANS START IN STYLE

Kaze Progressa's bid for the Cherry Cup, under its first season as the season-ending trophy for the new NHL, begun perfectly last night with a 4-2 defeat of newcomers Athel Nora.

Kamikli's opening goal came after just 2:28, a fierce one-timer from a Maujin pass. Athel Nora briefly fought back, scoring an equaliser on 6:32 on a power play, but the Progressans took the lead again on 12:42 from Nunkaznal on a power play of their own. A Maujin goal in each of the other two periods sealed the match, a late consolation goal for the Athel Nora boys just that.

Kaze Progressa's next match is against Walmington-on-Sea, who defeated Tanah Burung last night. The Progressans start as favourites, but not necessarily strong ones.

Saints Too Good for Ice Gators

Warnocks Wizards National Hockey Team Lose First Ever Match, 4-1 to Quinntonia

From our news services...

Matchday 1–The Warnocks Wizards Ice Gators took to the rink last night and lost in their first ever international match, 4-1 to the experienced Saints from Quinntonia. While National Manager Ufwurz the Furious was successfully leading the national football team to the second round of the Cup of Harmony back home in the Empire, his hockey players were struggling in their debut in Kalaallit Nunaat.

The Quinntonian Saints play a high tempo brand of attacking hockey and their style proved too much for the substance of the Ice Gators. The Gators were simply too slow tonight, their predominant Uruk’Hai size clearly no match for the fast skating human saints. Captain Borsnak the Blood-Axe lamented, “This is not like Uruk’Hai Ice Dancing. Our strategy of clutching and grabbing was actually penalised by the referees. Someone should tell those blind zebras...they aren’t supposed to call those. We should be allowed to mug and slug our opponents.” Were he at the game, Manager Ufwurz the Furious would surely have pointed out the discrepancy in penalties: 9 were called on the Ice Gators while only 2 were called on the Saints.

The Saints scored two early power play goals in the first period and never looked back. They outshot the Ice Gators 44-12 throughout the game. Forward Bill Esposito was impressive for the Saints, scoring two goals and setting up another. Goalie Grubtrak the Mean had a fine debut for the Warnocks Wizards side, but could not deal with the onslaught that was facing him. The Ice Gaors lone goal was scored in the second period by center Bubrot the Blacktooth. Assisting on the goal were winger Grisrukh the Plunderer and defenseman Grimzag the One-eyed.

For their next match in the Cherry Cup, the Ice Gators face super-skilled side Soviet Haaregrad.

Quackhak the Rumour-monger, reporting for WW1
Quinntonia
19-11-2003, 03:26
The Quinntonian Saints were quite happy with their debut. However, they were quite shocked when they were skating their warm-up and the opposing team skated onto the ice, "Are they evn human?" That was the first question, that answered in the negative and then the game began. The normally physically dominant Quinntonians were no match for the bigger and meaner Orcish? team. They then went to their speed and passing game, the penalties came quick and the Quinntonian powerplay was in top form. Bill Espisitoe got two opening night goals, making everybody realise that his new lucrative $10 million USD a year five year contract was worth every penny. The only problem with the tounament so far was the complaints from the players that government agents were following them, apperantly our host nation had banned Christianity the year before, however, the agents did nothing when the Quinntonians were openly praying and singing.

Norbray -military proving grounds largely excepted- is badly drunken to-night as Walmington's hockey capital celebrates its moment at the top of the Wickenthingi division.

Red Bears captain Ernie Mellington is fast becoming a local icon, and has been nominated for mayor. The fact that Norbray does not have a mayoral position seems not to have dampened this particular drive.

"Regie.." Said Mellington, still acting coach for the Red Bears "..y'know, the lad up front there, 'e's doin' a grand job wi' stick, whackin' shots in like a goodun'... I told him to do that." He finished with a toothy grin.

Regie Whiteside himself appeared more consumed by the officials' obvious grudge against him, despite his fourth successful strike of the season. "Tripping? What in the hell is that, honestly? They all weigh God knows how much.. 'ooh mummy, he tripped me!' Bah! Then they put their sticks down to fight! Ha! Showed them I did!" Whiteside brandished the chipped and suspiciously dark stained stick which was likely to be taken as evidence by local authorities. "Where the hell's Kaze Progressa anyway?"

Of course match reports reaching Walmington -usually half a column inside the back page of The Standard- bore little relation to the uncouth and brutal style of play actually exhibited by the diminutive Red Bear team.
20-11-2003, 06:55
From the popular show, "Trevorland Tonight" November 19, 2003.

"... There was much hype and hysteria in Windsor, the capital city of Trevorland, after the 2-2 tie with the highly respected Quebec Nouveau. Then comes Caer Pugetia, another highly respected team in the Lemieux division. The Porcupines were expecting big things, and were definitely getting them, up 3-2 in the third period. Two Caer Pugetia goals by a clearly superior squad gave them a 4-3 win.

This game has its share of good and bad news. The good news is that this is evidence the Porcupines can compete with anyone on any given night. The bad news is in that a 5-game round robin tournament, and with 2 games already in the books, the Porcupines need to make up two points in the next three games. And it doesn't get any easier as the Porcupines play Iansisle, the 7th ranked team in the tournament.

Coach Pat Robitaille is optimistic of Trevorland's chances. "In two games, we've had the lead in the third period. It's just a matter of finishing the opposition off." The excitement of the tournament is also fuelling local bars, as many bars are reporting full capacity. Remarks Tom Douglas, owner of Tommy Foolery's, "Last time I saw it this full, the Porcupines soccer team was in the Western Cup semi-final".

Gulls Vanquish Kalaallit Nunaat; Red Bears Win Again!
Gulls 4 -- Greenlanders 2 ; Red Bears 3 -- Progressans 2

CHATEAU, Noropia -- In the first city of Iansislean hockey, pleasure over a victory against the team assumed to be the Gulls’ main rival was tempered by bitter memories of opening night’s loss to Caer Pugetia. In the Wickenheiser Division, the unranked Red Bears of Norbray won a surprising game against eighth ranked Kaze Progressa.

Eager to avenge last night’s defeat, the seventh-ranked Gulls tore into the third-ranked Greenlanders, striking early on a Mark Pederson (1) (ASST: Naumov, Melson) goal in the first. After enforcer Ashlee Langdone drew a five-minute penalty for fighting early in the second, the Gulls scored again (MacPherson (1) ASST St. Jacques) in a four-on-four situation.

The Gulls added a third goal, this time by defenseman Brett Larson (1) (ASST Neal, Grant) and were riding high with a 3-0 lead at the halfway mark.

However, the Greenlanders appeared to be fighting back later in the third. A quick goal by center [x first name] [y lastname] (x)(ASST: [d last name], [z last name]) closed the gap to two in the waning moments of the second period.

The Greenlanders’ potent offense struck again early in the third, as [e first name] [d last name] (x) (ASST [z last name]) beat Sergei Naumov high on the glove side. Gulls fans around the Commonwealth held their collective breath as Greenlander right wing [s first name] [p last name] broke away from right defenseman Kevin Grant midway through the first, but Naumov made a brilliant glove save to preserve the Gulls’ lead.

Kevin St. Jacques (2) (ASST: St. Amour, Visegorodcevs) added an insurance goal in the waning moments of the third period, and the Gulls were able to skate away with a well-deserved 4-2 victory.

Meanwhile, head coach and general manager Steve Martinson offered his personal congratulations to the Norbray Red Bears after the teams’ respective games. The Red Bears skated to a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Kaze Progressa, usually held to be one of the better teams in the tournament.

“It’s good to see hockey has made such a positive impact in our honored allies, Walmington on Sea,” Martinson said at the post-game press conference, reading off a Ministry of Foreign Affairs release. “We’re looking forward to meeting them in the Cup’s play-offs!”

Forward Kevin St. Jacques wasn’t so enthusiastic. Nudging fellow first liner Sergei Visegorodcevs, he indicated the black eyes and bruises covering certain Progressans. “He may be lookin’ forward to meeting them, but I’m sure as hell not!”

QUEBEC NOUVEAU GIVES PRESIDENT BIRTHDAY VICTORY

A stunning 4-3 win over the Sysepho Terrorizers gave citizens in Quebec Nouveau reason to cheer last night , least of which was not their president, The Right Honourable Jacques Lucien-Bouchard, who was in attendence celebrating his birthday that night. President Bouchard, who has been an Annihilators fan since he was a child, had this to say about that game. "Oh man, what a game, eh? Tonight, I would like to thank both teams, for playing what turned out to be an edge-of-my-seat thriller, right up to the end. Wow!"
Next week, the Sherbrooke Annihilators play the highly respected Greenlanders of Kalallit Nunaat, a much feared and respected competitor in the conference.

A letter home by Cassowaries coach Bjorn Ulvaeus:

Gretchen dearest,

Troubles, such woes. My boys were already up against the wall when we learned that our division did not include Daistallia, the only team were were able to beat last time out. And my goalie, Mau Sumo, has a cold and scratchy, irritated throat. Oh, the bleakness!

We thought we had a promising start. Walmington on Sea, where like Tanah Burung no one really knows exactly what hockey is. The boys seemed more interested in sampling the many hot rum toddy variations on offer here in Greenland, than they were in training. I had to break up an impromptu singalong on the glacier to get the boys into the rink, where they put in a lacklustre performance and many of them fell down while trying to perform tricks, like skating backwards. I tried to tell them that wasn't a trick, it was just a basic skill of hockey, but they wouldn't listen. How do i go on? How, darling, when all about me is such misery?

Then we had to play SterlingIce. A real hockey team. I locked the boys in their hotel rooms the night before to prevent further drug-induced haze, but somehow they managed to open the adjoining doors and smuggle up some pretty Inuk from the hotel staff, and they had a party anyway. Without inviting me! Sometimes i wonder why i bother going on living at all. But don't worry Gretchen, i'm carrying on with the therapy and repeating the mantra Anna-Frid told me: "suicide's not painless, the afterlife has no changes, you might meet Alan Alda, what could be bleaker and colder."

But back to the game. We lost 3-1 again, but actually that wasn't so bad, getting a goal against the defending champions. Still, i sit here alone in this cavernous arena, waiting for the team to show up for practice -- will they come today? -- and ponder: why did i give up a perfectly good job as a hospital orderly to coach a bunch of guys who can't tell which end of their stick is which?

Why, Gretchen, why? I scream it into the winds, my only answer their howling emptiness.

From an empty soul,
your Bjorn.

"oh pass the cannabis" sighed Reichchancellor Vicoscis as he saw his team slump to a 3-1 defeat to Quinntonia. "The team must have been resting on their laurels a little there, oh well im sure the team tried their best and Quinntonia were just to powerful, im sure we will do better next time" as the RC sank into a world of relaxation and pink elephants he reflected on the only high point of the match, a goal from a powerplay by englesreich's player of the tournment, I.Will Smakuroundahed, a terrific slap shot from long range.

...900 million kaks will be spent to convert the motorways for use by hydrogen-powered supertrams, due to be complete by next week.

In sport, the Progressan ice hockey stars lost 2-1 to Walmington-on-Sea, beaten by a dramatic late goal by Ernie Mellington. Walmington took the lead early in period two with a penalty shot, before the Progressans equalised just two minutes later on a power play through Eaiqa Mawi-Daiqolaaz, his first goal for the national side.

Kamikli hit the post twice in period three before the agonising last-ditch game-clinching goal. Kaze Progressa are now third in their group, behind Walmington-on-Sea and defending champions SterlingIce.

Progressa Tele News would like to inform our media friends in Iansisle that the result of this match was 2-1 and not 3-2 as some reports have claimed.

Ice Gators Battle Bravely, Succeed in Only Losing 3-1

WW Side Holds Heavy Favourites Soviet Haaregrad to Only 3 Goals!

From our news services...

Matchday 2--When organisers for the Cherry Cup drew up the divisions and assigned games, they gifted the Warnocks Wizards Ice Gators the worst possible opening two conests. Having been dispatched by the sixth-ranked Godly Quinntonia Saints 4-1 in their first match, the Gators met the second-ranked hard-working Soviet Haaregrad.

Despite starting the game slugishly (no doubt the result of watching Cup of Harmony matches live from Warnocks Wizards late into the night prior to the game), the Ice Gators accounted well for themselves. The top line of Aghosh the Maimer, captain Gorsnak the Blood-Axe, and Mautrak the Basher were causing Haaregrad fits. Mautrak believed he handed the unfashionable Ice Gators the lead five minutes into the first period. The referee, however, disallowed the goal citing that the Basher kicked the puck into the net. This enraged the entire Ice Gator team and coaching staff resulting in a couple of unsportsmanlike penalties. The more experienced Soviet side cashed in, scoring two goals. Perhaps someone should inform the lads that there is no kicking in hockey; they aren't the Red and White Wizards.

Being two goals down to such a skilled side, the Ice Gators had little chance of really coming away with anything in the game. Morbad the Crazy gained some respect with a nice goal in the second period. Grishrukh the Plunderer chipped the puck over to Morbad in the corner. The Crazy one pirouetted away from his defender, skating in on goal. The goalie took his fake and went down early, Morbad glided past and backhanded it in to the empty net. Wurrbog the Hated earned the second assist on the goal. Goalie Grubtrak the Mean played well again in the Ice Gators' net, but his play did not factor in the outcome. Final score: Soviet Haaregrad 3, Warnocks Wizards 1.

For their next match in the Cherry Cup, the Ice Gators face Cup of Harmony friends Tranquillitis.

After two surprise wins against teams assumed the Red Bears' betters, Walmington was bitterly disappointed in defeat against fello unranked newcomers Zinkoland.

The Red Bears' attack was again moderately effective, forward Daniel Chipple scoring first on his debut, before Zinkoland began to put on pressure. Apparently these unknowns were far from afraid of taking a few knocks, as they kept up attacks in the face of a fierce if thoroughly disorganised defence. Red Bears keeper Clifford Uppington proved helpless in the face of repeated penalties, and the Walmingtoners soon found themselves 3-1 down.

Whiteside's reintroduction late on -he had been left out of the starting line-up in an effort to keep the hot-headed young star from being suspended or such- briefly seemed to collect the side's senses, as a fairly impressive passing move ended with captain Mellington finding the net.

It was for nought, however, as scarcely seconds after Whiteside's rasping shot clipped the upright, and while the Red Bears and their fans alike where still engaged in a sharp intake of breath at how jolly close that was, Zinkoland had mounted an effective counter attack, finishing the scoring off in the last thirty seconds.

Mellington now worries that if the Red Bears loose momentum, fans outside of Norbray will pay more attention to the recovering Gulls at the expense of the mediocre Norbray side.

Kaze Progressa's ice hockey stars proved big hits in more ways than one last night, bashing their way to a 6-2 victory over Tanah Burung.

The question being asked all around the Commonwealth was: "Sysepho? Who the hell is that?" The most common answer was "I think it's some sort of sexually transmitted disease."

But, regardless, the unranked team had dominated the heavily favored Gulls, striking for three early on and never looking back. Coach Martinson is said to be thinking about relieving Naumov in goal with the of yet untested Koenig, but says that the ace (who had a sub-2.00 GAA in the Iansislean regular season) will get "one more chance."

In other news, star forward Martin St. Amour suffered through another pointless game, after failing to cash in on the team's 4-2 victory over cellar dwellers Trevorland.

"I think this team has a definite shot at the Cup," said Steve Martinson bitterly at a post-game news conference, "but if this is the sort of play the continue to show, we'll deserve last place. I'm very disappointed in the level of commitment showed so far by every player."

Moose Qualifying Hopes Slim
-Frederik Johansson

The Tranquillitis Moose have been very inconsistent in the NHL this year, leaving them with a slim chance of qualifying.

The first game was a disappointing 3-1 loss to newcomers Engelsreich. In a very poor performance, the Moose opened up well with an early goal from Kristopher Jokela, but allowed three unanswered goals to give the Engelsreich team their first ever victory.

The second game saw a 4-2 victory for the Moose, against a new and very inexperienced team from Rejistania. The Moose allowed two goals late in the game, but still came off with the comfortable win. Goals came from Gustav Enstahl, Kristopher Jokela, Tomas Steen, and Erik Telqvist.

The third game was against another newcomer, this time the Warnocks Wizards. A growing conspiracy theory of the Wizards tricking the Moose coming from the unfortunate incidents that happened to Football Federation President Markus Gustafsson was fueled with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Wizards, on a controversial late goal that saw a Wizards forward kick the puck into the net. Video evidence was "unclear", although later replays showed a blatant kicking motion. More on this development when we learn more. Moose goals came from Bergstrom and Ljundberg.

The latest game was the greatest victory yet for the Moose, a 4-2 victory over 2nd ranked Soviet Haaregrad. A 2-2 deadlock was broken in the third when Anders Nielsson lifted a backhand over the shoulder of the Haaregrad goaltender. An empty netter later by Kristian Dackell gave the Moose the 4-2 win. Other goals were scored by Källström and Larsson.

With the top four teams in the conference moving on to the playoffs, the Moose need a victory over the Quinntonia Saints tomorrow in order to move on. A three goal victory will ensure qualification, anything less than that will leave fate in the hands of Daistalla, who need to defeat The Gulf States by 2 goals. A draw will give the Moose nothing.

From the Daily Kangaroo:

PROGRESSANS BLOWN AWAY, UNLIKELY TO REACH PLAYOFFS

Kaze Progressa surrendered their strong position in the Wickenheiser Division after being annihilated 5-0 by defending champions SterlingIce.

The Progressans were defeated by the same opposition last season, a result that, coupled with a defeat against the hosts Kalaallit Nunaat, sent them into the ignominy of the B pool. There was to be no revenge as the champions racked up three goals in the first period alone, a fourth early in the second and then simply toyed with the Progressans, adding a fifth in the last few minutes for good measure.

The Progressans must now beat Zinkoland to stand a hope of reaching the playoffs.

Dennisov 5-1

The Red Bears were expected to be laughing stocks but piled up strong wins in their first two games. Since then, however, their play has slacked off. Still in a playoff spot, but will need a good result against the defending champions to stay there.

Kaze Progressa 10-1
A team of extremes: 6-2 winners one day, 5-0 losers the next. A win over Zinkoland is likely to carry them past Walmington into the playoffs: but can they win?

Zinkoland 12-1
Needs to beat the Progressans: a tough challenge.

Iansisle 12-1
Last year's B pool champs have been disappointing and currently stand fourth in the Lemieux Division. But if they can beat Quebec Nouveau, they can still go through.

Tranquillitis 12-1
The Moose gave themselves a chance by neating Soviet Haaregrad, and need to be equally impressive in their last match against Quinntonia.

Polkaton, Oilermania, Engelsreich, Sysepho, Athel Nora -- all 15-1
These newcomers all stand on four points and can advance to the playoffs, given the right breaks. So far, none of them have made a mark -- but if they advance, they'll become teams to be noticed.

Daistallia, Warnocks Wizards, Uniginia, Rejistania, Trevorland, Tanah Burung -- 100-1
These teams are all eliminated. But Mau Slurp will still take your money, if you feel like betting on a miracle. Whose to say miracles can't happen? Tanah Burung can still advance if four or five teams spontaneously combust!

Juu: Whateve' will happen, we are till now far beyond eshpectaions.

Kase: No one ever played ice-hockey.
Ihis: See what I mean?

Ice Gators Kick Over Moose

Controversial Mauku the Basher Goal Wins Game 3-2 for Warnocks Wizards

From our news services...

Matchday 3–Recording their first ever victory, Warnocks Wizards Ice Gators won a controversial hockey contest over Cup of Harmony friends Tranquillitis, 3-2. A debatable late goal from scrappy winger Mauku the Basher secured all the points for the young side. Moose football federation president Markus Gustafsson must be wallowing in self-pity in his hospital bed.

The Ice Gators began the game well against the tenth-ranked moose. Perhaps this was down to preparation. Acting joint managers Muzgash the Dirty and Razhog the Smasher treated the lads to a video night, the night previous to the match. The team watched the multi-Oscar the Grouch award winning film, Mikko the Moosehunter. Clearly inspired by such mooving entertainment, the Ice Gators took the game to the favoured Tranquillitis Moose. Aghosh the Maimer opened the scoring for the Wizards side, converting a pass from captain Gorsnak the Blood-Axe. Goalie Grubtrak the Mean stood on his head at the other end to preserve a 1-0 lead after the first period.

Aghosh was involved in the second goal of the game, this time serving as provider. His cross ice pass to Mautrak the Basher sent the big Uruk’Hai away, one-on-one with the Moose goalie. Rather than fake or finesse a shot, Mautrak blasted one home for a 2-0 lead. This awoke the Moose, and there is nothing as dangerous as a Moose that is awake. Except perhaps for a giant evil spider, but I digress. The Tranquillitis side drew level with two unanswered goals. Bergstrom and Ljundberg were the scorers. 2-2 after two periods.

The third period saw the Moose pressing for their first lead. Again, goalie Grubtrak played above himself, watching his lower self make save after save. With the game seemingly heading for overtime, winger Mauku the Basher won it in controversial fashion. Krumukh the Maimer’s pass sent in Durbtrak the Slaughterer, who along with Mauku, skated in on a 2-on-1. The puck bobbled up the Slaughterer’s stick, who did well to shovel the disc to Mauku. The Basher buried the puck with a swinging stick and leg action. Neutrals and Moosites in the crowd called for a disallowance of the goal, but the goal judge made the correct call in the end. Warnocks Wizards 3, Tranquillitis 2.

For their next match in the Cherry Cup, the Ice Gators face Englesreich.

Gulls Miss Out Again!
Ianapalis draws with Sherbrooke ; 2-1-2 record not good enough to play for Cup.

IANAPALIS, Iansisle -- “One two more goals. That’s all we need,” whispered Jackson Pentcroft as the seconds ticked off the third period. Everyone in the room knew that a win with a +3 or better goal differential would lock up a playoff spot with six points and a 14-14 Goal Differential. At the time, Ianapalis was leading Sherbrooke 1-0 with five minutes left to play in the third period. All knew, however, that even if they won with that score, Athel Nora’s better GD would cause them to vault past the Gulls.

Goalie Sergei Naumov had been perfect all night, in face of Martinson’s challenge that he had better shape up or be released. This time, the offense was letting the Gulls down, as only center B.J. MacPherson had scored after tipping a Martin St. Amour goal past the Sherbrooke goalie. With precious time running out, Martinson pulled Naumov to add an extra attacker to the Gulls offense.

At first, the strong attack seemed to be working. Extra attacker Mark Woolf slapped a shot off the Annihilator goalie’s chest, and left winger Kevin St. Jacques picked up the rebound, only to see it clang off the top bar and over the goal. Later, after defenseman Jamie Black had picked up an Annihilator clear behind Ianapalis’ goal, the Gulls had another breath-taking chance. MacPherson slammed an Annihilator defenseman into the boards and St. Amour skated up behind him, letting a clear shot fly. However, the Sherbrooke goalie made a brilliant diving stick save, only to turn around and block St. Jacques on the wrap around.

Then, as the last minute started to run out, a Sherbrooke forward broke clear of defenseman Visegorodcevs and put a mid-ice shot into Ianapalis’ empty goal to complete the Gulls’ humiliation. Naumov was back for the start of overtime, but the Gulls would get only three shots off as they were horridly outskated by the Annihilator side. Steve Martinson’s team skated off the ice in an eerie silence as the Annihilators celebrated at center ice.

“Let me just tell you,” Martinson said at his only interview with the press after the game, “that even if a tie is like kissing your sister, this tie is like kissing grandma with her teeth out.”

Moose In Playoffs!
-Frederik Johansson

The Tranquillitis Moose continued their winning ways with a 5-0 smashing of the Quinntonia Saints today, giving them a qualification spot with a plus 7 goal differential, better than the even goal differential of Quinntonia and the plus 2 differential of Oilermania.

The game today, played by arguably two of the most religious nations in the cup, opened with a moment of prayer, and the national anthems were bypassed in favour of the hymn 'Ave Maria', which was sung by fans from both nations, and quietly, although perhaps grudgingly, respected by fans from other nations. After communion, the game was finally underway.

The Moose, who came off an impressive 4-2 win over Soviet Haaregrad last night, opened the scoring early at the 3:02 mark of the first period. Kristian Dackell fought behind the net and managed to get a pass out to Kristopher Jokela who slipped the puck through the legs of the Saints goaltender, making it 1-0. The Moose ended the period on the powerplay, and David Jakobsson made the Saints pay with his first goal of the tournament, at 18:59, giving the Moose a 2-0 lead going into the intermission. The Moose also outshot the Saints 15-4 in the opening frame.

After some early 2nd period struggles that saw Moose goalie Adam Hölmqvist come up big to keep his team in the lead, Andreas Olafsson made it 3-0 after the Saints defenceman mishandled the puck on the Moose blue line, giving the opportunistic Olafsson a breakaway. He made a nice move and lifted the puck over the sprawled Saints goalie, at 10:13. The Moose scored 3 minutes later with a Tomas Steen bullet from the blue line that beat a screened Saints goalie.

The third period saw the Moose hold Quinntonia to only 3 shots, as Adam Hölmqvist saw little action in the final frame to preserve his shutout. The Moose put an exclamation point on the game with a goal from Frederik Ljundberg, who deflected the puck off a Saints defenceman's skate, capping an already woeful night for the Saints. The Moose took the game 5-0, and advanced to the Don Cherry Conference semi-finals.

The Moose take on a Dennisov team that has surprised everyone so far, losing only one game, while winning the other four in a pretty weak Gretzky Division. The Moose have come off victories over the top two teams in arguably the toughest division in the NHL, and look to continue the winning ways in the playoffs. The other semi-final features Soviet Haaregrad and The Gulf States, in what should be a very good game. Meanwhile, in the Ron McLean conference, top seeded SterlingIce takes on Quebec Nouveau, and the host Kalaallit Nunaat takes on Kaze Progressa.

Red Bear fever strikes with queer timing

All Walmington has to-day come together in support of the valiant Red Bears ice hockey team who failed by a narrow margine in their first ever bid for international glory.

Playing the game of their lives, the Red Bears went down just 2-1 against world number one side SterlingIce, a feat many have (perhaps over) excitedly compared to the prospect of Walmington's diminutive rugby side scoring unanswered triple figures against England.

Uppington was desperately defiant in goal as the side skated their hearts out in pursuit of an equaliser, but it was not to be as a skilled Sterling side frustrated the Walmingtoners with painfully long periods of possession. Whiteside's single early strike (his fifth of the competition) proved to be all the Red Bears wrote.

The nation has found a new enthusiasm for the team and their sport, for as we all know, Walmington loves a valiant looser. Pundits attempting to drum up support for the local lads have contended that in a way, the Red Bears did better than the previously more popular Ians, who managed as many points in their games, but finished with a negative goal difference.

Of course the official line is one of solidarity and commiseration.

ICE COOL PROGRESSANS STORM TO PLAYOFFS

In the end, it was hardly difficult. Kaze Progressa cruised to a 4-2 defeat of Zinkoland, whom they had also defeated 4-0 in field hockey's World Cup earlier in the day, to qualify for the playoffs.

The Progressans used a 'shock and awe' offensive more successful than any George Bush has ever used, scoring three without reply in the first period through Kamikli (twice) and Nunkaznal. Kamikli completed his hat-trick early in period three after Zinkoland secured a foothold on the game midway through period two on a power play. A long-range deflected shot gave a second consolation for the Zinkolanders in the last minute but it was of no consequence, as the Progressans had the best goal difference in any case.

The Progressans now face Kalaallit Nunaat, the creators of the Don Cherry Cup, in the playoffs.

Moose Continue to Win
-Frederik Johansson

It was a bit tougher than the previous game with Quinntonia, but the Tranquillitis Moose have moved on to the Conference Finals after a 3-2 win in overtime over Dennisov.

Dennisov opened the scoring after only 24 seconds when a dump in took a weird bounce off the boards, leaving Moose goalie Adam Hölmqvist, who went out to play the puck, helpless, while the Dennisov forward slid the puck into the empty cage.

The Moose drew level with just under five minutes remaining in the first when, on the powerplay, Mattias Axelsson's blast from the point was redirected by Markus Östberg past the Dennisov goaltender. The score was 1-1 after 20 minutes.

The second period started out rather slow, and the first ten minutes saw some rough, grinding play along the boards in the corners and behind each teams' net, until a pass from Gustav Enstahl made its way out in front of the net, allowing Fredrik Ljundberg to lift it above the Dennisov goaltender, who's outstretched stick just barely missed the incoming pass.

The Moose played to protect the lead, and were still up 2-1 with five minutes to go in the third period, when a Matthew Salo penalty led to a Dennisov power play tally. When the horn blew to end regulation, Moose coach Markus Wilhelmsson looked quite angry with his players for blowing the golden opportunity.

Luckily, they were vindicated after only 54 seconds in overtime, when Enstahl was let loose on a breakaway. He made no mistake, and the Moose moved on to the Cherry Conference Final, to take on Soviet Haaregrad, who defeated The Gulf States 3-1.

Dmitri Kasparitus, the Haaregradian captain, was quoted as saying "Tranquillitis, they don't stand a chance. We're gonna pack 'em into a bowl and smoke 'em. Cherry Cup, here we come!". Wilhelmsson had this to say in response.

"I guess Mr. Kasparitus was not present when we beat his team 4-2 a few days ago. I have full confidence that we can repeat that result and move on to the finals."

VICTOIRE! Sherbrooke Slashes Way to Conference Finals!

Having defeated the 1st placed ranked SterlingIce team last night in a 3-2 victory, the Sherbrooke Annihilators have advanced to the Don Cherry Cup Finals.
The game was a first-ever event for the Don Cherry Cup, as it was played on an outdoor rink, where spectators and players alike endured below-freezing temperatures of a chilling -19 with a wind chill of -24. The winning goal was scored by Annihilator LW Serj LeTrois with a wrist shot from 10 seconds left in the third period. After a body check into the boards which sent his helmet flying only minutes earlier, LeTrois returned with determination. SterlingIce kept up a withering volley of goal shots last night, 15 in all, keeping Annihilator's goalie, Mathieu Juneau, more than occupied. After the game, shivering in their locker room, the team joined in a rousing rendition of 'Toujours Notre Québec" to warm themselves, helped partially by small electric heaters and a celebratory glass of caribou. "This win means a lot to us," said coach Michael Rivet, clapping his players shoulders proudly 'I know that if we play our defense correctly against the Greenlanders, we won't have the same problem we did last time at them. This next game holds a lot of weight for us, yes, but we are very pleased to have made it this far.'
Quebec Nouveau goes on to play Kalaallit Nunaat next game.

Once again we triumph over Quebec Nouveau! Their soft southern ways are no match for the greatness of Greenland! Onwards to meet -- uh, Soviet Haaregrad. That will be tough.

From the Daily Kangaroo:

PUSHED OUT, BUT NO SHAME

Kaze Progressa's ice hockey stars were literally forced out of the Cherry Cup with a narrow 1-0 defeat against Kalaallit Nunaat in the conference semifinals.

The Progressans tried to play aesthetically pleasing hockey but ultimately, when push came to shove, the Progressans were pushed and shoved around immensely. Ultimately, the favourites powered their way to victory, through a scrambled goal early in period two.

The Progressans will probably be ranked roughly the same as their previous 6th in the world for their next crack at the Cup.

Aw, man. I knew we were peaking too soon. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to post it before I had to head home for Thanksgiving.

Congrats to all, especially Soviet Haaregrad for winning it all.
