OOC: Oh right ... I forgot I'm one of the few, the proud, the speedwriter ... on NS, that is ... ... it's all good, I hope your college work is going well, Henleaze ... as I always say, 'education before mass murder' ...

IC: Rana walked up those stairs with Justinian until they came close to the plateau which was the level Trent was inhabiting. Before they could reach it, however, the troops who had just been attacked and outrun by Jarboe began shooting at them. Rana retaliated unconsciously, raising a hand to focus. The four men at the top of the stairs were now dead, blood dripping from every orface of the face.

Rana simply retracted her hand and looked at it. "That ... was me this time ... I killed those men ... not psycho me, not loyal servant me ... just ... me." she said, lowering her head. Just then, more troops appeared and began shooting, although they couldn't see down the stairs and all their shots were wild and easily dodged.

Justinian pulled himself and Ranawhin behind a piece of fallen stone nearby. "Personally I don't think this particular case was too bad." he said while scattering a few powergun bolts--only set to "stun"--around the corner of the stone. "When people suddenly start shooting at you, a psycho isn't exactly the only person who would retaliate."

Rana lifts her head with a sigh and a nod of her head. "You're right ... I've just ... never done it myself before." she said quietly, listening in hopes of the soldiers all being incapacitated by what Justinian threw at them. "Don't you think Trent will think we're his enemy now because of what I've done, though?" she asked, looking out from behind their hiding spot.

"And how will we get there before Jarboe? I have the strangest feeling he's getting close ... you've already had great trouble battling him, so what will you do differently this time?" she wondered aloud, slowly moving up the stairs as it was apparent the soldiers were sufficiently stunned. They soon reached the plateau and saw more works of Jarboe's hand, the secretary's arms and legs set neatly on her desk, the decapitated man near a window at the end of an opposite hall. Blood was everywhere.

"SHIT! He's further ahead than I thought!" Rana exclaimed, beginning to run through the offices and down the winding hallway Jarboe had visited just seconds before, hoping Justinian was just behind her. She wanted to get to Trent in time to find out if she really was the traitor or not. She felt a strong need to know that wouldn't let her rest, and if he was killed before her enlightenment, she'd be in the dark forever. She was careful to keep her mind shut, however, just in case she came close enough to Jarboe for it to be a problem. She used only her elven ears to know he was just ahead, and moving at remarkable speed.

"He'll get there before us, what are we gonna do!?"

"What we will *huff* do," said Justinian, panting as he sprinted, "is this. You noticed my powergun was powered by psychic energy earlier, right? Well, with my own energy, the only way I could possibly put enough force behind the blast to knock Jarboe out was by knocking myself out. But...you know how to put some of your psychic power into an object, right? And you can do it without letting down your shields, by holding the object close and then expanding the shields a little wider around you? Well, put it in this--" he unclipped a small device from the side of his powergun-- "and I'll plug it in, and use nearly all my power along with a good bit of your power and put him out of commision for a while. And I can tell we're getting pretty close, so I'll cloak and you be as stealthy as you can."

Jarboe came to a halt before the door to the command centre. Any sounds of pursuit had faded long ago, and now he stood alone before the great oaken door. It stood, studded with metal bolts and ribs, positively reeking of solidity. Directly above it was a small black globe affixed to the wall, which likely contained a camera of some sort.

Jarboe flung a blow at the door before him. As it met the surface, a hollow boom reverberated around the enclosed corridor with the sound of thunder. The age-hardened wood crumbled under the impact, only to reveal a layer of dark metal an inch below the surface. Though it bent under Jarboe's fists and blades, it would not break. Teeth bared in frustration, Jarboe stood back from the now-battered entrance, searching for another way in. None were apparent - the corridor simply ended, featureless stone walls moulding into a doorframe. The hinges of the door were concealed in the frame itself - perhaps if he could batter through the stone surrounding them he might pull the door from its hinges...

Suddenly, alarmingly, the door creaked and swung outwards. Jarboe leapt back into a crouch, blades flickering from his fists, ready to confront whatever emerged. The clank of metal on stone was the first warning he had.

Figures began to emerge from the doorway. Rynehart had been huddled at the back of Jarboe's consciousness attempting to block out the events of the past few hours, but the appearance of these strange figures aroused his interest. From what he could see they appeared to be medieval knights - clad in metal armour and carrying enormous shields. The tips of sword blades could be seen around the edges of the shields, obviously enchanted - runes and sigils covered the blades, and the faint glow of puissance could be seen around the razor-sharp blades.

They came into the corridor and advanced on Jarboe. He backed off slowly, still in a fighting crouch and wearing a macabre grin.

OOC: UC, are these men wearing helmets? What formation are they advancing in? Is the corridor wide enough for them to advance all in a line, or only wide enough for two or three at a time?
11-01-2004, 23:14
Rana stopped running as she knew they were catching up on Jarboe and took the small device Justinian had given her. "Do I hold it or clip it on somewhere or something? I've done it before, but never with this type of technology." she said, looking it over. "I'll do what I can." With that, she held the device close to her chest and enfused it with as much power as it could hold. She casually handed it back to Justinian before leaning up against the wall with fatigue. "Maybe I should have held a little back." she said, quietly regaining her composure.

"And I don't think I'll have to be stealthy, Justinian. Remember, Jarboe still believes me to be on his side. I can just walk up to him." With that said, she unbundled her hair and touched herself up with the still wet blood which now covered the shaul as well. "This is disgusting, but I have to look convincing." she said, mudding herself up really good.

OOC: The corridor would be pretty wide to allow large creatures (like the YlimNeicna) to get through. The men would come through in a wide wedge-like formation, to surround their foe. The leader would be at the front. Their armour includes helmets. In the case of the leader, a fully covering helmet.
Btw, I have updated The Underground City's World Factbook entry (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=93423)

IC:
Dorusceronis' group was also approaching the entrance to Trent's office, but through a different corridor. While the rest fought, Roberto held back, conserving his strength in case of unforseen circumstances, to keep a psionic lookout and to restrain Jarboe once the time came.

Approaching a large metal door, the group were set upon by guards. After they were quickly dealt with, a man approached, clad in metal armour and carrying a large sword. He was a member of the Order. He walked toward them confidently, but then stopped and looked at Legnerihes.

"You again?" he asked. "No, wait...you aren't him. He was at least a foot taller."

Legnerihes was already a tall man. In their early days the necromantic warlords had used magic to make themselves taller and more muscular after their natural strength began to fail. Legnerihes was six foot five, and only one warlord was over seven foot, the former leader, Thintaedkran Anrusnya.

"Thintaedkran?" exclaimed Legnerihes, rage visible in his cold black eyes. "Where did you see him?" he demanded.

"He was running toward me with a limp and attacked. I fought back and almost finished him off, but the coward teleported away."

Legnerihes was furious to hear his deceased friend and former leader called a coward. He ran toward the knight and swung his sword down with such force that the knight's sword, intended to block the attack was cut in half. Fear filled the knight as Legnerihes grabbed him by the throat and lifted him off the ground.

"Your blood will decorate these halls. Your screams will echo throughout the city. Your pain will be immeasurable. Your very mind shall split apart in a typhoon of sorrow and despair before your body fails and your spirit shall be forever tainted by the horror you shall experience."

Red sparks of magic shot up Legnerihes arm and into the man. He began to scream and convulse helplessly. Blood began to pour from his eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Smoke began to rise from him as magical forces charred his insides. Legnerihes dropped him to the floor and chopped his body into many pieces.

Legnerihes then stood there, looking at the remains, and breathing heavily. Slowly calming down, Legnerihes returned to the group.

"Let us move on", he said to the others.

Dorusceronis pushed on the door, but it had been locked from the other side. With a mighty punch, he broke the door open. The next corridor they entered was the one containing Jarboe and Trent's bodyguards. They approached the group cautiously.

"Good point. Try to distract him...or he'll see my footprints, or hear me. Give that here..." he took the clip. "Wow! You put a lot into this. I hope you don't have to do any fighting anytime soon. Right..." he clipped the device onto the powergun and cloaked. "Come on..." said the voice out of thin air.

Rana nodded. "And be careful. I'll have to be twice as careful not to imprint now. If it happens, get yourself out of there fast." she said, jogging down the hall haphazardly, trying to mimic how she acted when she was insane. It wasn't hard to remember. Her mind probe of Justinian had given her enough of a glimpse into her other self to be very helpful.

Rana stopped when she got to within 15 feet of Jarboe, but was surprised to find Dorusceronis, Atanracnad, Roberto, and the rest of their group was now present nearing the same point as she. She cursed under her breath, then threw on a careless grin, pulling on her talents as an empath to fake her emotions so no one could tell. Her mind was closed tight as well, so that even Roberto wouldn't know what she was thinking unless he really tried to attack her barrier, which she was prepared for.

"Jarboe!" Rana exclaimed, watching as he readied himself to attack the group of high-ranking soldiers. "Ooh ... fresh meat." she said, laughing lightly. She then turned to Dorusceronis and Atanracnad, saying "Welcome to the show, my lords." She looked a bit further down the hall to see what Legnerihes had done to the man there. "Ooh ... who conceived that masterpiece?" Rana asked with a laugh, pointing. She then turned back to Jarboe, moving nearer to Roberto so as to stay out of Jarboe's way. As she approached him, she waved. "Nice to see you again." was all she said before paying her attention to Jarboe, knowing the troops themselves would be good enough distraction for Jarboe.

OOC: Nice. I don't suppose someone has an archive of your vampire thread somewhere..?

IC: Justinian cursed too, only mentally. That Roberto person would be sensing him very soon...his cloak was absolutely no protection against someone who could sense psychic powers. So the only choice was to shoot fast and then hope Rana's cover didn't bust. He himself couldn't possibly hope of fighting the daemons in the weakened state...with Ranawhin's help he might be able to take one or the other of them, but not both at once. Of course, those Order soldiers were an unknown quantity...who knew how powerful they were?
He raised the powergun, concentrated for a few precious seconds--and fired at Jarboe.

Trent sat in his office, and rocked back and forth on his chair worriedly. The enemy was getting closer and he was beginning to doubt his guards' ability to stop them.

"Don't be afraid, Michael..."

Trent desperately looked around for the source of this voice.

"Who's there?" he demanded. "Where are you?"

He appeared to be alone in the room.

"Just relax...there's no reason to be scared"

Trent stood up suddenly, and breathed rapidly.

"I don't know what you're so worried about"

On the word "worried" Trent saw the face of the voice, right in front of him. He yelled hysterically and swung his sword, which crashed down onto his desk and cut it in half, but the face had already disappeared. Trent looked in all directions, his sword outstretched as sweat slid down his face.

Jarboe was barely aware of Ranawhin as all his attention focused on the armoured knights advancing on him, swords glowing and armor clanking. Rynehart examined them with a mounting apprehension. The armour and swords being obviously magical, he was unsure if Jarboe would be capable of penetrating them. There were gaps and chinks in the armor, that he could see, but the huge tower shields would be an effective defence. The men would almost certainly be the cream of Trent's force, physically powerful and highly trained.

But as Rynehart reminded himself, Jarboe was more than human. Faster, stronger, more lethal. He might not be able to destroy all ten of these men if those enchantments were as powerful as they looked, but anyone treating Jarboe as prey was liable to find the tables turned.

Blades flickered from Jarboe's hands. The harsh light in the corridor highlighted his powerful muscles and the jagged ridges of flesh that were etched across his body. He backed off, still crouched... then sprung forward, covering the distance separating him from the guards in a fraction of a second. The bone jags sought flesh.

OOC: UC, check your TGs.
The Underground City
16-01-2004, 00:56
OOC: TGs checked. Like you said, speed and agility will be Jarboe's best help in this battle. But do not forget, he will not be fighting alone.

Legnerihes looked ahead. There were numerous soldiers, and they were tough. He could feel it. Jarboe would have difficulty tackling them alone.

"My lords, I believe Jarboe is in need of assistance. I will gladly aid him."

"So be it", said Dorusceronis. "If necessary, Atanracnad and I will join you."

Legnerihes walked over to join Jarboe. He faced the guards and began to speak.

"Gentlemen, you will now experience true fear. You face not only the beast Jarboe, but also the great leader of the notorious necromantic warlords himself, Legnerihes Mantresni. And you face these foes simultaneously."

He knew the battle would be difficult. Difficult, but victory would be possible. He had confidence in himself, and Jarboe seemed to be an effective warrior too.

"Who wants to die first?" he asked the guards.

The leader of the guards laughed. "I am supposed to fear you? You decrepit old man?"

"With age comes experi - " Legnerihes struck mid-sentence, but the knight had anticipated it, and deflected with his great shield.

While the two of them were locked in battle, the other guards moved forward, ready to attack Jarboe and Legnerihes.

OOC: I'm so sorry... for the past few days my computer has been lying in small pieces in the floor of my room while a technician poked round inside it and charged me money. Oh, and Jarboe already launched himself like a big spiky missile at one of the bodyguards, so UC's gotta answer that attack with something before Jarboe can do anything else. But here's a little filler for Justinian...

IC: The bolt of energy hummed from Justinian's weapon, crackling and twisting through the air. It impacted on Jarboe as he leapt, and his muscles contracted in shock, spasming as the psychic power coursed through him. He lashed out blindly as he landed, and his claws struck armour.

The guard saw Jarboe zooming toward him and had but a split-second to react. There were two choices available to him: slash with his sword, or raise his shield. The former would put him in an offensive position to begin, but was very dodgy defensively. The latter would be a good defensive start, but it may be difficult to get into an attack.

He raised his shield, and thrust it out as Jarboe approached, creating a mighty clang as it collided. The guard instinctively lowered his shield as struck out with his sword.

Jarboe's fist hammered into the rune-carved metal of the shield with a sound like a great bell ringing. The guard's sword snapped out in a backhand swing - Jarboe swayed back and the blade hummed past his chest. He dropped his weight and struck against an armoured swordarm with both fists. The guard yelped and his numbed fingers sprung apart, the sword dropping to the floor. Teeth bared, Jarboe tensed, ready to spring... until a flicker of movement caught his eye. He spun just in time to see another armour-clad figure coming at him, sword raised high.

Rana smiled as she watched Jarboe fight. This would give just the distraction she needed. She carefully baracaded her mind, then opened one tiny channel of concentrated telepathy and systematically probed everyone around her, deep down within their souls even. She wished to know if they were tired, what their weaknesses were, and how much power they could excert before tiring. (You can each post what she can find and what she cant.) Because the mind is a complex thing, however, information came randomly to Rana as her stream of telepathy broke of into many parts, connecting with everyone like a one-way road. They wouldn't be able to tell who the beam was coming from, nor trace it back to a person, but they could control what she retrieved, to a point. The stream she sent went straight for the subconscious and unconscious minds, the parts of yourself that rarely lie but can hide information if the mind is limber and able to concentrate properly.

OOC: Note ... she will not probe Jarboe nor Justinian nor the guards fighting Jarboe. Everyone else, yes. Even Trent and his high officials beyond the doors and walls. They shouldn't be able to tell she's doing it unless they're strong in that area like Roberto, and it should be impossible to tell where it's coming from except possibly for Roberto, who is a god when it comes to telepathy and telekinesis and such. If Roberto does trace to Rana, let me reply before doing anything to her, okay? Thankies.

OOC: When you say Rana won't probe Jarboe (visions of aliens and prostate examinations :? ) will she probe Rynehart? Or will she just ignore Jarboe/Rynehart completely, due to the fact that Rynehart is in Jarboe's mind and therefore any connection to him runs the risk of being tainted by Jarboe..?

OOC: I was going to wait on Jarboe actually making a response to being shot, but apparently after falling down he simply continued fighting. And since no one has posted in four days...

Justinian turned sway from his target and began to run. If he hadn't been noticed by the young psionic already he soon would be, with that amount of psychic energy being flung around. He had to make an attempt to take him out before he was noticed or he would be six different kinds of toast. Praying that Roberto was distracted, he raised his sword...

OOC: I did respond, but it was only short, and then UC kinda got Jarboe into a fight. But here we go...

IC: Jarboe leapt back from the approaching guard, fangs bared. The manic energy humming through his system had sustained him thus far as he battled with the armoured men, but his strength was ebbing. Justinian's psychic bolt had sapped him of his stamina - the adrenalin rush of the battle had worn off and he could feel his entire back as one dull throbbing mass of pain. Legnerihes was battling three guards at once, the clash and screech of swords on armour echoing through the corridor, and a fleeting shadow followed Justinian as he ran across the passage, drawing his sword. Ranawhin seemed to be concentrating on something, and Jarboe could feel power building in the air around her. He backed away further as the knight advanced, feeling his muscles trembling with the pain and exhaustion of his injury.

Armitage had his pistols out--a mere human as he was, a stray blow would crush him if he got too close--and was searching for an opening in which to fire. One of the guards lurched back to avoid a horizontal slash of Legnerihes' sword and recieved a pair of .45 slugs to the chest. He didn't notice as Justinian passed within a meter of him, now only a few steps away from Roberto. He was looking the other way....but suddenly he tripped on a piece of stone that seemed to be protruding from the floor. He was sure there hadn't been anything there a second ago...he realized what had happpened and rolled just in time as a floating sword stabbed down on the place his head had been.

The sounds of battle echoed throughout the halls as Legnerihes and the guards fought. The guards were powerful, and well equipped, but Legnerihes could tell that they had neither the skill nor the stamina he did.

Atanracnad watched the battle carefully, ready to intervene if necessary, but Legnerihes seemed to be handling the battle well enough by himself.

"News, Ranawhin?" asked Dorusceronis.
