Not wanting to stir up a whole debate on Iraq, but, was there not reports by UN weapons inspectors, UN resolutions etc, and an ultimatum given to Saddam before 'war' started ?

There can be very few wars (certainly in recent years) that have started with an unprovoked attack out of nowhere, except for Iraq invading Kuwait.
