My nation has a 33% military force, but that is due to the fact that service is compulsory. Voluntary servicemen suffers from a mere 5%.

We only have about 5% in our military-but it's mainly due to our current economy status.

My military is 2%. But if the CDF (Civilian Defense Force) is included, it comes to about 45%.

No more than 1% I think, but an extremely large majority of that is reservists that we call Planetary Militia.

(Roughly 0.037% (c. 270,000 effectives and 100,000 support of various types), but that's only because there's a war on. Normal peacetime service numbers are closer to 0.012% (c. 80,000 effectives and 40,000 support).)

Jeez people, do you realize whatwould happen to your nation if you ever called up more than 5% of your population into arms? You'd be devastated. Not onpy that, but your population would revolt against you, so you'll also be desposed.

The kingdom of Crookfur currently has less than 1% of its population udner arms (inc support personell).

No modern nation has successfully maintained even 5% of its population in the military for very long. Even North Korea isn't that high.
Anyone claiming 5% would have to RP a much lower econ than the game says they have, and would be rather poorly equipped. Much more than that and the government can expect to be overthrown in the near future. Anone claiming something like 20-33% would find a new regime the next morning (NS days, not RL).

Hm... concidering the way Iuthia is run (i.e all emergancy services are run by the military as well as the orphanage, the schools however use a military template but are indepentant of the military) I would say that 1.5% of my population (1.47 billion) make up my complete military.

Conscripts can be taken out of anyone Citizen as they have all undergone military training at one point in their lifes... however we would never use these forces unless the regular forces had failed, plus we couldn't use all of them even if we wanted to, we only have enough weapons and equipment for 2% conscripts... the weapons are also not in the best of condition as recent fund cuts have damaged the maitenance (sp).

It varies on a daily basis, but generally under .5% since the draft was abolished. The Xanthalian military is very small and mobile. It is deployed only when there is heavy infantry fighting. Everything else is handled by the Imperial Armada.

Less then 1% of my nation's population, and it's steadily decreasing as Weapons Grade Realians and Ziggeraut Recycled Soldiers are rapidly replacing Krowemohian Army Regulars... Since Realians are mass-bred in labs, they do not count as citizens. Hmmm.. Do dead citizens count towards my population count?

~1% Haaregradia has no reserves, rather we juggle the armed forces on a semi-active basis. Any soldier will be active for two 3 month periods a year.

about 1-3% of my pop is drafted.

1% is the standing army, besides that every citizen in good condition is part of the Duchy Militia.

33% is so completely unrealistic it beggars the imagination.

1/3 of your total population in the Service? Hell, there probably aren't that many people of military age in your country.

About 20% of your population will be below military age (and therefore below working age).

About 20% of your population will be too old to work.

Combine those two (extremely rough) numbers with your 33% military and nearly 3/4 of your population is unable to work. The remaining 27% have to produce all of the food, tools, power, and everything else a civilized nation requires to survive.

Even with compulsory military service, you won't have that many people reaching military age at any given time. Most countries with the draft lose most of their personnel in two years, with a small percentage of long-service veterans. This makes for FAR fewer that 33% in the service (more like 3-4%, and even that level is barely sustainable).

Let us assume that your entire nation is a military state, with every single person in the military. More than 95% of those people will be doing non-military jobs. You will have to produce all the necessities of life for your people, plus enough surplus production to to generate income for foreign exchange and produce military equipment. You can't do that with 1/3 of our population in the military.

Please go to the first page of the NationStates forum and read the stickies there. There's an excellent thread called "Why high% armies are unrealistic" that you ought to read as well (I don't know if its in the stickies, but it ought to be). Go to the CIA website and check out the CIA world factbook. Notice what population % real countries have in the military.

About 5% enlisted (regular army, Militia Orders), about 20% with basic training (reservists, NDF (Home Guard),police) .

0.35 percent.
roughly half is army, 1/4 navy, 1/4 airforce.
of the army, 1/2 is logistical troops, hq, base staff etc, 1/4 offensive formations and the rest a mix of motorized infantry and tank/IFV formations for internal defense.

note that these troops are very well equiped, as I have 25% of budget allocated to defense.
