Calcednie today announced a shocking change in the way basic demographics would work in the country. In the words of Chairman Jacob Phon:
"The people can no longer tolerate the threat the overpopulation brings to our globe. Today, Calcednie takes a step towards fully managed population growth."
Research Advisor to the Chairman Ma'tok Singh elaborates: "New techniques in in vitro fertilization and sustained foetus growth have finally made it possible to decouple sex from procreation. By creating our infants in the laboratory, we can decrease the genetic load on the population and select for beneficial traits including heightened reflexes and intelligence. We can finally work directly to transcend our humanity and act as a social organism."
Social Planning Commissioner Elizabeth Shu: "All newborns will be sterilized and a germ-line sample taken and preserved for future use. All adults are expected to report to a medical professional for sterilization within the next year. Germ-cells will be stored without any identifying marking, though a portion will be analyzed for genetic defects and those that are considered dangerously deleterious will be purged. Newborns will be created in response to projected demands for individuals."
No unrest has been reported throughout the country in response to the announcement, and there was some spontaneous celebrating reported in the streets of the capital city of Hobbes. Dr. Shu comments: "By freeing sex from the risk of procreation, we allow people to enjoy their bodies with one another. Sex is fun. Having children is not as much fun. Nor do all parents want children, and not all adults are equally capable at raising them. By making it safer and reducing the consequences, we are making our people happy."
