Give PEACE a chance!

>A recording from Corti's newly formed Central News Agency
>Today, after centuries of isolationism, Corti's newly crowned Metal-Prince addressed the international community.

"Um, hello. Well. I'm sort of new to this kinging, but I'll try to say what I have to say. Since my father and my eight older brothers died, I've been trying to improve our fine nation. So I started reading some of the books on politics my father banned.

"Well, after reading this book called The Communist Manifesto by these guys - Engels and...Marx, I think - I learned that by buying the means of production to make more money, the People have been exploited. After further reading, I learned that someday the People - er...I think the book called them Prole-...something - will rise up and overthrow the Borgoysigh, leading to an era of peace and plenty. Well, of course I had to research this for myself.

"So I went down to the people, the Proletariat," his face brightens as he remembers the word which had eluded him earlier, "to put my ear to the ground and see what they thought." Here his tone becomes sharper. "Well. It seemed a lot of them had already heard of this stuff!" The amazement in his voice is evident. "And they definitely didn't like it. They said some things to me I'd rather not repeat; but I believe one of the politer terms was, 'Bleeding Commie.' Some dwarves started hefting axes. A few actually threw rocks at me!" His voice rises in incredulity.

"Well. It seems that the people don't like this Communism. I can see why Dad banned it. However, after opening our caves to the outside, we've started hearing that some people actively support it. Of course, this support is ridiculous.

"Erm. Well. I'm seeking for like-minded leaders to support the will of the people and join PEACE, the Proletarian Effort Against Communist Encroachment. It's really for the good of the people, you see.

>After this statement, King Pol left the stage, declining to answer any questions.
>It remains to be seen whether PEACE will be accepted by other nations.

To: Pol Unoc IV, King of the Dwarven Kingdom of Corti

We would like to say we're in full support of this organization. Full support. Why, we so fully support it, we would go so far as to wage full-scale war. Haha. Not that we support war, though. But if PEACE requires war, why, war it is! Haha. There's no war, is there?

On another note, we would like to learn more about your kingdom. We would like it so much, that we're inviting you for a state visit to our own great Republic.

Well, consider Menelmacar a supporter, then, you can feel free to open chapters throughout our country.

OOC: Meh, no skin off my nose. This is at least 50% tongue-in-cheek anyway. I mean, look what PEACE stands for.

IC: King Pol finished the message from Consul Utley. He blinked. "War. Well!"

"Sire?" Chancellor Durin prompted. "Is there a response?"

"Erm. Yes." He cast a wooried look around the Small Hall. "I wasn't planning on war." He shook his head. "The people really don't like this Communism. I don't see why it should be a problem."

Durin cleared his throat. "Dwarven society isn't exactly...conducive to Communism, Sire."

"What's that?" The King peered at him. "Are you telling me that some societies are?"

A brief hesitation. It had been dangerous to anger the old King, and this new one was just as odd in his own way. "It's...possible, sire."

But his fear was groundless. With a small sigh, Unoc replied, "Very well. Write up some response, saying that there won't be any war except in the cases of...unprovoked aggression and...erm...domino effects?" He nodded. "Yes, that sounds about right. See to it, will you?"

Durin bowed. "Of course, Your Majesty. On another note, more nations have agreed to unofficialy support PEACE; and both Roania and Menelmacar have agreed to sponsor chapters."

Unoc beamed. "I see. And they're important, are they?"

Durin smiled. "You could say that, Sire. Of course, some people aren't very fond of them, but they do have their spheres of influence."

"Very good. That will be all, Chancellor. Oh, and tell this Utley fellow that we agree to talk with his country."

Durin bowed and left.

>The Armed Republic of Hegxzylpt

We send greetings and good will to Hegxzylpt. We feel it would be of mutual beneficience to both our nations to open diplomatic relations and we welcome the opportunity gladly. In response to your query, PEACE has no plans to involve itself in any conflicts except in cases where international stability would require it. In the hopes of our future good relations,

Lord Chancellor Durin
Count of the Low Slopes
on behalf of His Royal Majesty
Pol Unoc IV
Prince of the Mountains, Defender of the Dwarves, and King of Corti

Communism is a weakness, it chooses to divide society by forcing the rich to be equal with the poor. This is not an efficient way.
Under Fascism, all classes are to be united in common goal which is to strengthen the state.
The Communists must be stopped and therefore we shall support PEACE with what limited monetary support we can muster. We shall however have no PEACE chapters in our nation for other organisations other than the State must be destroyed. Existence outside of the state is to not exist at all.

No war? Very well. Our nation will be glad to preserve international stability, though, have no fear.

We have established a central chapter of PEACE in our nation, and some hundreds of thousands have shown their enthusiastic support. Some were not so enthusiastic, but professional volunteers from our government managed to boost their support. We look forward to working further with your nation in this and other endeavors, and we eagerly await your journey here to open relations between our two nations.

Sounds intresting, in Teritora feelings by the commoners towards communists lead to the destruction of the communist party and deaths of its members at the hands of the common people. We would allow chapters of this organization to open in Teritora.

From: The Emperor of Morgain
To: Pol Unoc IV

The government of Morgain supports PEACE, and any other anti-Communist organizations. Of course... we also oppose Fascists, but view Communism as the greater threat at present, and so will work out alliances with Fascists until such time as Communism has been removed from the radar.

As a word of advice to Pol Unoc IV, we offer that you should be aware of Socialists, and Social Democrats as well. They are Communists but with prettier sounding names.

Further we would warn that your advisor may have some Communistic tendencies, and ought be dealt with appropriately.

For some good reading, his majesty is advised to consult Adam Smith, John Locke, Ludwig von Mises, and Alexis de Tocqueville.

Corti

Hearing the knock, Durin looked up from his work. "Enter."

The door opened to reveal a hesitant guard who announced, "The King requests your presence, Lord Chancellor."

Durin grimaced. "Did he say why?"

"No, sir."

Durin glanced at the papers before him with some regret, stood, and said, "Very well. Take me to him."

As he followed the guard through the labyrinthine passages that were the Kingdom of Corti, he reflected on the years since Pol had come to power. He had served the past two Unoc Kings, bloodthirsty psychopaths, perhaps, but Kings who understood kinging for all that. Now, he had to deal with this scraggly-bearded boy who read books (Books!) and tried to treat all dwarves like equals. The problem was, Durin thought, that Pol, the youngest of eight sons, had never really been raised for the throne. He had never needed to be with all those brothers, but then his father had actually tried to look for that Thing...to use as a weapon, no less!

Now he had come to the huge doors of the young King's study, and waited as the guard announced his presence. From inside, he heard a voice say, "Yes, yes, send him in." He frowned. The boy had no idea about the way kings should act.

As he stepped into the study, he bowed and said, "You wanted me, Your Majesty?" He noted several new books and suppressed a scowl. Kings should sit and look royal while his councilors ran the country, but this one had started playing at history, economics, philosophy, politics...the list went on.

"Yes, yes, shut the door, will you?"

Durin turned and glared at the guard who had been standing behind him, who jumped up and slammed the door shut. He made a note to find out the guard's name and turned back. "Sire?"

Pol looked up from a book, Locke's First Treatise on Government this time. Great, next he would start talking about kings working for the people. "Recently, someone mentioned something to me about Democracy and Socialism. What do you know about them, Chancellor?"

"Democracy is rule by the popular will, sire, while Socialism is a step on the path to Communism, Sire. There was a point in history where Democracy actually became nearly synonymous with the word Republic in the minds of the people."

Pol nodded. "Well. I studied up on these things." Durin almost groaned. "And I realized something."

Durin waited. Finally, he gave in. "What was that, Sire?"

"That a bunch of nations decided they would rather have this Democracy and Socialism than Kings!" Pol looked affronted. "So I went down to the homes of my citizens to get their opinions-"

"What?! Sire, I thought we had agreed, after the incident with the rocks, that you would stop going around the kingdom telling people about these ideas of yours."

"Oh, no need to worry about that, Chancellor. I brought plenty of soldiers with me."

Durin prayed to the seven fathers for patience. "And they all told you how much they love being ruled by kings, I expect."

"Exactly!" Pol's eyes lit up. "So I've been wondering about whether to change PEACE to PEACSDE, The Proletarian Effort Against Communist, Socialist, and Democratic Encroachment."

Durin took a breath. "Sire, I'm not sure that would be such a good idea..."

"Why is that, Chancellor?" Pol's voice had become dangerously low. "Are you against kings?"

"Of course not, Sire, it's-"

"Hah!" shouted Pol. "Then how do you explain this?" And he waved a piece of paper at Durin triumphantly.

Durin took it. It was a message from some nation called Morgain. "Your Majesty, how could the Emperor of Morgain know anything about me? He's never met me!"

Pol looked downcast for a moment. Then his face brightened. "He could have ways! He could have people watching you, spies!"

"And why would he have those spies, Sire? To spy on Corti, perhaps? When did they get here? Corti's been closed off to the world for some time."

His reasoning had broken through. Pol now wore a dejected expression. "Oh. Erm...you're not a Communist, then?"

"No, sire."

"Oh. Well." Pol stared at the ground. "Why don't you think we should change the name, then?"

"Many people might equate Socialism with Communism, Sire. There's no need to change the name to say that socialism is bad, and PEACE is a good name. Besides, I believe, Sire, that you might be getting the wrong idea about Democracy. Many people would become rather upset if you started a crusade against it."

"Oh. Very well. You may go, Chancellor."

Durin bowed, wished His Majesty a good night, and left, aware of the thin ice he had just skated across and thanking the Ainur for escaping with his skin intact.
