Rugby World Cup

08-11-2003, 10:58
Being nothing if not opportunistic, New Hopetoun has announced plans to host a Rugby Union World Cup. The format will be as follows:

Group Stage
Teams will be divided into 4 groups of 5 nations each. Teams will play each other once with points being awarded for a win (4 pts) and a draw (2 pts). Points will be added together to give a cumulative total.

Knockout Stage
The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage. The finals will be arranged thusly:
QF 1 = Winner Grp 1 VS 2nd-place Grp 4
QF 2 = Winner Grp 2 VS 2nd-place Grp 3
QF 3 = Winner Grp 3 VS 2nd-place Grp 1
QF 4 = Winner Grp 4 VS 2nd-place Grp 2

SF 1 = Winner QF 1 VS Winner QF 2
SF 2 = Winner QF 3 VS Winner QF 4

Final = Winner SF 1 VS Winner SF 2

3rd Place Playoff = Loser QF 1 VS Loser QF 2

Barbarians Match
The "players of the tournament" (decided by player voting) will be placed into two teams for a Barbarians Match. Groups 1 and 2 will contribute one team between them, while the other team will be contributed by Groups 3 and 4.

OOC Stuff
All of the results will be decided randomly. I have a system which I'll use unless someone recommends a better one. Likewise the Barbarians selection will be done randomly - to a point. Nations are encouraged to post "match reports" explaining how well their players did, and this will be taken into account when Barbarians are being selected.
To join up, post here. It's probably a good idea to telegram me as well that you've signed up. There are 20 places - of which New Hopetoun has taken one (leaving 19, if you're unsure).
Sign-up posts should include:
Nation name
Team name (very important)
Team lineup (you can flesh this out in separate threads if you want to, all I'm after are names).

The tournament will start when 20 nations are signed up - or after my exams are finished, whichever comes later.

Count Dyelli Beybi in. This is the third attempt to start a world Cup btb. Last time Dyelli Beybi got out of the group stage then they stopped posting :P I was very depressed, but I guess its fair enough I think I was the only one following it at that stage.

Our Team name is of course: The Crocodiles

They play in sky blue shirts with camel coloured shorts. A green crocodile logo can be found on the shorts and chest.

You must be a fatso Yawnyawn forward to say that. League's too fast for you. Too skillfull.

BTW, why is this thread called "Rugby World Cup"? It was last held in 2000.

This is a Yawnyawn tournament, so it should be "Rugby Union World Cup".

10-11-2003, 12:16
Updated appropriately. Still looking for 12 more teams. a 10-team tournament would work at a pinch - just delete the QF round - but we may as well aim for something close to the real thing.
Dyelli Beybi
10-11-2003, 12:19
I agree. Give it a day or so more to see how it goes. If not, allow people to enter their puppets (possibly using them in as namibiaesque cannon-fodder teams)
10-11-2003, 12:41
Mmm. Puppets would be a good way of doing that. I could probably build some bias into the system to account for the equivalent of a Namibia-Australia match, too.

(For those wondering about the system I'll use, it's basically random-number based but with some quirks to make the scores look a bit more realistic. At this early stage, I'm not looking at building "form" into it, but if we have another RWC later on then it might happen. Likewise, unless we have a bunch of puppets come in, "cricket scores" are unlikely to be run up.)

10-11-2003, 16:11
Seeing as this tournament does not have a Minister requirement, I'll join.

Nation: Cockbill Street
Team Name: The Seagulls

Line-up:
1 Peter Markham, 2 Foul Ole Ron, 3 Cryolite, 4 Jack Bull, 5 Chrysoprase, 6 Detritus, 7 Andrew Peterson, 8 Robin Harmison, 9 Olaf Stronginthearm, 10 Sam Vimes Jr., 11 Ben 'Yobbo' Quirke, 12 Jonathan Hill, 13 Bjorn Hammerhock, 14 Harald Burleigh, 15 Richard 'Duck' Robertson.
10-11-2003, 17:23
I'll join if at all possible.

Nation: Chakana

Team: (should have been the Cho-Jas, as that is the species of inhabitants, but that, i see, is taken) The Ka'x'kakala (roughly translates to "the supremely best players. might seem a little pretentious, but this is a Cho-ja nation.).

Team members:
1. To'Ngala,
2. R'Sakana,
3. X'Jinn,
4. X'Lapala,
5. T'Cocox'x'ma'tinn (captain),
6. A'xantaga,

13. Papaio of Great House Acoma (human),
14. W'quhxcala,
15. N'tatakallana,
1. extra H'Paxa.
2. extra T'Taxaka

(note, numbers given here do not indicate position of players. I cannot at the moment remember the numbers positions, and wouldn't want a human as a prop for a cho-ja, or a chu-ji-la as a scrum-half or fly-half)
11-11-2003, 07:53
Teams Signed Up
New Hopetoun Kan-Kumuls
Pablicosta Rugby Pheonix (Phoenix?)
Lapse Bristlenoses
SPARTEN Springboks
Dyelli Beybi Crocodiles
Kaze Progressa Kangaroos
Sagesquagmire Cho-Jas
Austar Union Wallabies
Cockbill Street Seagulls
Chakana Ka'x'kakala

That's now 10 teams. What I'll let you do now is register a puppet nation if you want - just post that it's a puppet. I'll fiddle around with the system to build in a bias against the puppets so you'll get a similar result (hopefully) to NZ-Italy or so, but probably not as spectacular as Australia-Namibia.

And while I think of it, if someone can post what numbers translate into what positions that'd be great as a reference tool.

If Dyelli Beybi and Pablicosta can handle the signups until I'm back, that would be great. I'll be working on the results system during that time, so when I get back if anyone wants/needs to know how this thing works then you can ask.

The Belmore Family National Team

Running now at 16 teams, but with a few caveats:
1. Pablicosta, is your team the "Pheonix" or the "Phoenix"?
2. Chakana, do you have a puppet that can take over the Toro'qo'w in line with the "one team per nation" rule?
3. Sliponia, do you mind having your team as the "Sliponia Celtics" rather than the "Raytown Celtics" because of the national teams situation?

For those curious as to when Hopetoun will be back, he hopes it'll be later this week - probably before the real RWC final.

Sliponia is fine with the name change---We will merely edit out roster with to have the best players in all of Sliponia playing.
14-11-2003, 17:23
Hi, I'm removing the team Toro'qo'w. In it's place will be a team from the puppet nation Thunland.
14-11-2003, 18:02
Ok, here is the team from Thunland (Chakana puppet nation). I don't think I've mentioned this, but as some of you may have surmised, the Chakana team aren't human (Exept for Lujan and Papaio). They are Cho-ja, an insectlike species that look like humansized ants. They are completely black, have humanlike mouths, handlike frontlegs. They walk on their for backlegs, but when they run at top speed they are flat out. As top speed is equal to that of a horse, they won't be doing that for the rugby. The chu-ji-la are much the same, but they are grey and much smaller than the Cho-ja. The Cho-ja and Chu-ji-la on the team were specially bred by their queens, and therefore have team colors covering their bodies. Team colors are Black, grey and purple.

The Thûn, who make up the second team, are centaurlike creatures, but with bodies slightly larger than those of horses. Their team colors are Black, white and grey

So, back to the matter at hand.

Nation: The Protectorate of Thunland

National Team: The Cthrrrga

1. Hasstha
2. Esska
3. Cthorrrat
4. hamaat
5. Tooagat
6. Tooragat

10. Mewerrrrrrn
11. Elgordin (Eldarin Elf, Captain)
12. bra
13. Ooosgat
14. Niroden (Eldarin Elf)
15. Uuutha

(note. in Thûn sosciety, a male is not mature until he has been exeedingly proficient at some sport or another , or won glory in battle. In ancient times he would have had to collect a human head to be mature, but that has been changed. The honorific that preceedes a mature male's name in Thûn-Eldarin has been changed to a capital letter in the english transltion. therefore some names are without a capital letter. The Eldarin Elven players are like humans, only taller and better runners, but not so stocky)

The Hopetounese Chairman of Selectors has finally returned from his absence and has made the announcement of the Hopetounese Kan-Kumul team for the Rugby World Cup:

1. Carlton Awari
2. David Mbani
3. Joseph Robinson
4. Roberto Beangke
5. Nelson Gnubane (VC)
6. Ben Iyataki
7. Francis Boronaya
8. Johnson Meli
9. Josiah Winchester
10. Moi Arapne (C)
11. Peter Ai
12. Michael Simitay
13. Robert Gordon
14. Walter Ai
15. Lee Wright

Reserves
16. Wilson Avei
17. Andre Palu'ini
18. Alfred Motora
19. Luke Marshall
20. Mario Brackenredge
21. Thomas Fara'ini

The squad is largely as expected. Especially heartening is the increase in the number of native-born players, with 13 members of the squad tracing their roots back to colonial Hopetoun. Reserve backs Palu'ini and Fara'ini were always going to be difficult to leave out, despite claims from some sections of the press that this would disadvantage other native Hopetounese (the two players being immigrants from neighbouring islands).
The Ai brothers will be reunited on the wings for the first time at a national level. It seems that the selectors have finally worked out what the diehard fans from the club side Vai Dragons have known for years - these boys are dynamite with ball in hand.
Moi Arapne's domestic season wasn't his best, but the selectors have shown faith in the flyhalf by retaining him as Captain. At Vice-Captain is Nelson Gnubane, at 30 one of the "elder statesmen" of the Hopetounese pack. His appointment isn't seen as a particularly long-term strategy, more as a combination of rewarding him for his services and keeping the pressure off some of the talented young backs in the team.
Retirement rumours continue to circle around both Gnubane and injury-plagued outside centre Robert Gordon. While 28-year-old Gordon is by no means over the hill, his recent career seems to feature more time in hospital beds than it does time on the field creating his magic. Gordon has himself fuelled these rumours by talking of a desire to return "home".

The Kan-Kumuls are ready. They know that this is the big one - a World Cup on home soil. The team is hungry for the victory and, if the home fans are to be believed, is heading for a grand final near you.

OOC: Draw will be posted in a separate thread tomorrow my time. Teams will be telegrammed their groups.

Add this team:

Country: South Austar
Team Name: Militaristic Monkeys
Players: (You make them up I cant be stuffed)

Note: This is a puppet nation of the Austar Union, but can it be considered a different nation because the two countries of the AU and the SA are meant to be adversaries.

Jaurania and KP aren't best friends these days... just check their UN categories. ;)

From the Daily Kangaroo:

PROGRESSANS TO SCRUM DOWN WITH ALLIES

Kaze Progressa have been drawn with Cockbill Street and Belmore Family in their group for the Rugby World Cup.

The Belmorians are reknowned allies and friendly sporting rivals of the Progressans; the two combined as part of the unsuccessful three-way bid for the last soccer World Cup and in qualifying for it, both were drawn together and qualified, the Progressans famously winning 2-0 at home to the Belmorians.

Cockbill Street, meanwhile, have established ties rapidly with the Progressans, especially in the world of cricket. Their rugby expertise is uncertain, but surely not non-existent.

Lapse and Thunland complete the group.
