New Montreal States
Location: Northern Europe, or thereabouts (most RL land has been seized already so...)
Capital: New Montreal (officially, see below)
Regions: Divided into 6 patriarchates, each run by a Patriarch, or highest ranking bishop. Each patriarch takes a 5 year term as leader of the nation while the others lead their regions from their home capitals. Theoretically when it is a patriarch's turn to lead he should leave his capital to go to New Montreal and rule from there. In practice this never happens unless it is the patriarch of New Montreals' turn. The patriarchates are: New Montreal, New Byzantium, Kent, St-Jean and the Lesser States, Angebourg and the Far North, and The Nouveaux-Etats and Colonies.
Leader: The current High Patriarch Is Grigori I of New Byzantium, who is 6 months into his 5 year term and is doing well according to public opinion.
Languages: French and English are the two national languages and most people speak both. Greek is spoken in southern New Byzantium and an odd dialect that is a mixture of Danish, Swedish and Norweigian is spoken in Angebourg and the far north. Russian is spoken there also, to a very limited extent. Gaelic and Welsh used to be fairly common in Kent but they are now almost dead there.
Religion: Orthodox Christianity is the state religion and 75% of the population is Orthodox, although freedom of religion is guarenteed. 8% are Anglicans, mostly centered on Kent. 5% are Catholics from either St. Jean or the colonies. Everyone else either has no religion or is atheist.
Geography: Each of the patriarchates is a different island or set of islands and has a radically different geography.
New Montreal is a large island that is almost in the middle of the nation and has mild summers and bitterly cold winters. It is mostly industrial now and is the location of the HQ of New Montreal States Consolidated Beef and Pizza Delivery, the nation's largest company. Largest cities: New Montreal, New Brossard
New Byzantium is 2 small islands that are south of New Montreal and due to a quirk in meterology and the tides the temperature there almost never drops below freezing and never gets too hot either (much like Seattle or Vancouver). Agriculture dominates the south and east, the north and west are either swamps or big cities. Largest Cities: New Byzantium, Anastople.
Kent is the largest island, located west and north of New Byzantium and has a temperate climate, with mild summers and fairly cold winters. Kent is almost entirely agricultural with large mineral deposits in the far south, Largest Cities: Kent Harbor, Zeal.
St-Jean and the lesser States is an archipelago running from the northern coast of Kent to the East Coast of New Montreal. Climate varies wildly from island to island, as does the speacialty of each island. St-Jean is the largest of these island, directly off of Kent's northen shore and is the site of most defensive plants. Largest cities: Fort St-Jean, Port D'Amelie.
Angebourg and the Far North is a bunch of frozen islands, completely worthless except for the huge amounts of oil contained under them. The only other things up there are carnivorous penguins and military bases. Largest (and only) city worth mentioning: Angebourg.
The Nouveaux-Etats and Colonies are scattered across the world and range from tiny rocks to well sized tropical colonies growing assorted fruits that wouldn't last 5 seconds in the north. The largest of these colonies are De Cloutier and Brownston Bay.
