Testing STO Weapons

Loronar Military Test facility-5 miles north of Trenton

It was a clear blue day and sitting on the launch pads were a long line of new experimental missiles. Given a new military acronym, STO, or Surface to Orbit, the missile named Sky Haven was prepared after spending only several hundred million dollars. The technology itself was based upon the antiballistic missile system in use of the Federal Republic. With slight variation in the terms of propulsion to allow the STO to reach an escape velocity and enter lower and mid orbit. Of course, it was hypothetical, this was the first real tests that were being conducted not on a computer. They would be targeted using a powerful network of radar arrays which were supplemented by a series of satellites in orbit over NYNJ.

Earlier in the day a test rocket was launched. A multistage rocket normally used to send probes into the outer reaches of space the 7 stage rocket was mostly intack. The rocket had been given the designation EW-203, EW standing for Elarain Warship, but no one really knew that except higher government officals. The test was rushed ahead of schedule due to the situation with Gibralter and Spain. The missiles if they worked in the tests would be rushed off to Spain to allow them to use in their self defense of Spain from the orbitial bombardment of what had been come to known as evil imperialists in NYNJ.

"Dr Provens, the missiles are ready and fueled. EW-203 has been locked onto with ground and orbital radars. The line is ready to fire."

The line as it was was a series of four rockets. At the test facility two lines had been prepared however only one line would be used for the test.

"Alright Private Emerly. Get the ground crews clear of the missiles. Private Warrington, prepare to launch the missiles. Inform me when the missiles are ready to launch."

It was a quick process. It had to be. If the STO weapons were to have any real effectiveness they had to be launched before any orbital strikes could be made on the launch sites themselves. The STOs would one day be located in their own silos beside of the nuclear weapons but until that time the current series of STOs would be above ground. Locking onto the orbiting rocket, the Army Private looked back toward the direction of Dr Frank Provens. The lead researcher on the Sky Haven Project.

"Dr Provens, the missiles are ready to launch."

"Launch the series."

One by one the missiles left their racks and proceeded skyward into the blue sky. From the city of Trenton a light sense of panic was created as people saw the missiles rising up from the base. A government spokesmen quickly laid to rest the fears after speaking with the press and informing the people that they were only conducting tests on new rockets designed to launch satellites into space at a cheaper and safer rate than other rockets. The rockets took several minutes traveling about 4x faster than the speed of sound itself before reaching orbit and finding their marks. The EW-203 disappeared in a smokeless fireball which quickly went out itself in the near vaccum of space. Debries falling back to earth and burning up in the atmosphere led people to believe an unexpected meteor shower had occured over the Eastern Hemisphere.

"EW-203 has been destroyed, all Sky Haven OTS weapons have reporting in before impact that target has been struck. "

"Thank you Private Warrington." Dr. Provens moved off and went over toward his office lifting up the phone and dialing the number to the Militaries General Headquaters in NYC.

"General Marshall? Its Dr. Provens with the Sky Haven Project...yes General we've just completed Test 1 now. I'd like to request alittle time to study what went right and if anything went wrong identify it now before we do a more complicated test....I realize the Spanish are losing because of orbital bombardment however....understood General. We'll try our best to analyze the info quickly."

With a sigh Dr. Provens hung the phone up before picking it up once more and dialing a new number.

"Stevens? Hi its Frank, listen I know I said you can take a few days off but the military is pushing us ahead. I need you back at the Test Center. We gotta go over info. Dont expect to sleep in the next 48 hours...I know..I know..I'm sorry Nick..how's the family?...."

The next test rocket was already ready at the Huntington facility loaded with a bunch of EW Gear designed to fool rockets. General Marshal had only given the scientists 48 hours before the next schedule of tests were to begun.
