Autopolis (AP): President Hart announced today that he signed a new act of Parliament annexing 60% of Section 18, a small coastal area in Maine, adjacent to and southwest of the main area of Automastan and south of the Dominion of New Tyrrhenoi.
The area annexed, covering some 400,000 square miles, contains roughly 15 million people, mostly Spaniards, Arabs, and Russians, with a small Jewish populaton.
Local leaders agreed to the annexation because the local economy is in what Hart called "serious trouble," with 13% unemployment, low technology levels, little industry, and high poverty rates (estimated at 22% in some sectors).
While most locals are receptive of their new government, there are reports of some anti-Automite terrorist organizations forming among the nonreligious populations.
Elections are expected to occur within the next few months. The temporary administration is currently focusing on improving local infrastructure and expanding industrial bases. Plans for healthcare and educational organizations are already under development.
