New Ships, Fleet

In order to expand the Empire's ability to explore out-of-system, the Council of Science has approved the manufacture of a new exploratory fleet, for the sole purpose of surveying and possibly colonizing new worlds identified by the von Neumann program.

The new ships, dubbed Legends are in two parts- an orbital section and a smaller detachable landing section. It is expected that, assuming they can be built fast enough, the Legend-class will first see service in the exploration of Gem37b.

Several names are under consideration, including Igraine/Morgaine, Morgaine/Mordred, Uther/Arthur, and Dagda/Brigit. Further suggestions from the populace are encouraged.

Naming parts of two different ships the same name, "Morgaine", could lead to some confusion.

Instead of using actual names for your ships, we suggest the use of descriptive word, like Valiant, or Curious, things like that.

Assuming that one of the pairs using Morgaine is chosen, the other will be discarded.

The naming scheme is in keeping with the theme of Legend. The names for orbital/surface pairs are derived from parent/child pairs from mythology.

Orbital section and a landing section...

Wouldn't be anything like this Fireball class, would it?

Not quite. More of a flying brick with a hole in the bottom.

Definitely not the sort of ships that will make onto posters in little boys' bedrooms.

Since spaceships don't have to be aerodynamic you could just stick an engine on the back of a brick, which is pretty much what they've done here.

Stupid multipost! Someone censure whatever secretary sent out that memo twice!

Well, that goes that reference... then again, the whole thing was atmosphere capable so that explains the aerodyne configuration.

And I like the posters on my walls.

The recent economic downturn has significantly set back work on the new Legend-class, but sales of other craft have provided an much-needed influx of cash to allow the project to continue. The completion date for the first Legend-class has been moved back several years, but preliminary designs are now being made available:

Underside (http://timesurfer.linuxcowboy.net/LegendShipsFrontBottomPort.jpg)
Front (http://timesurfer.linuxcowboy.net/LegendShipsFrontTopStar.jpg)
Top Side (http://timesurfer.linuxcowboy.net/LegendShipsTopPort.jpg)

Note the empty space on the underside. It is there that the landing subcraft will be placed. Currently, the most popular design for the landing craft is a more utilitarian version of the pentolaterally symmetric Flagship.

The Legend-class will have two counter-rotating rings, the outer ring acting as a counterweight and radiation shield, and the inner ring being habitation space, with artificial gravity comparable to Mars.
