In the summer the economy thrives from vast tourism thanks to the area's white sandy beaches. But for those who don't like the beach, the redwood forest draws those campers from around the world who are looking for some peace and quiet. Regional industries include fishing, logging, canning, hemp, tourism and banking.
We also get a good draw from the annual "Derby Film Festival" -- an event that brings screenwriters and equine handicappers from around the globe to join in the weeks fun. If you're broke after a few races, you can go watch some student films -- it's great.
