Martian Colony Disaster

Crimmond
02-11-2003, 22:08
A signal is sent to the entire Southern Hemisphere of Mars. At first there is only static with audio.

"Hello? Damn. Corporal, get the video up now!"

A form of a soldier in an envirosuit appears slwly on the screen. He speaks quickly and sounds like he's just been running. There are lights and flares everywhere to illuminate the dark night.

"Is the video on?! Good!" He looks at the camera. "To all Martian colonies and nations, there has been an asteroid impact in the Mizar Province of the Crimmond Empire. It hit directly outside the capital city's dome. We..." He swallows quickly and pans the camera over the still settling clouds of dust and there is nothing but twisted alloys and rubble ass far as the eye cans see. "We've lost almost 10,000 people in the collapse and decompression of the dome. There are people still alive in sealed areas below the city, but the impact crater has caved in all the tunnels and our efforts are being hampered by fragment strikes. We request immediate...."He turns to look at something off camera and the cameraman swivels to look also. "Holy sh*t!"

http://home.earthlink.net/~alpha_zero_usm/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/mars.jpg

That one frame is all that is seen before the camera stops transmitting.

A ship in orbit would see massive shockwave spread over the area as the fragment the size of a house slammed into the planet. There are over ten more fragments heading for the Southern hemisphere. Only five have gotton to the surface, two in Mizar. They hit .34 miles apart and left just enough time between the hits for rescue workers to get to the capital. A tragic coincidence.

We will send a rescue team to help in the search of survivor. We still remember the help that you gave us in Pyrtania. If you need anything, just call.

Our province of Pyrotess is in Fobos, we will send the aid from there.

IC: Meesage to Aelosia: The Empire thanks you for your assistance.

In space, the CSS Starflare, a Lion Class Dreadnaught, begins to open fire on a fragment hurtling towards Mars. THe flying chunk of iron doesn't blow up easily though so they settle for altering it's course with missile strikes enough that it will fall into orbit and they can handle it later.

"Damn, where did that come from?"

"Good question. Space defense should have caught it a long time ago."

"Well it didn't - let's find out why. Deploy two battle groups at 300k klicks along the incoming vector to deal with anything else. Classified weapon use is only authorized to prevent civilian casualties. Don't use em if you don't have to. Meanwhile, send a battle group back along the vector - weapons out and shields up. Lets see where they came from."

"And Mizar 3?"

"Contact their civil defense, and see what assistance they need. I'll give authorization to deploy 10 SBG's to provide medical assistance right now."

---

In Martian near-space 10 super-heavy cruisers of the Rapid Response Group move into a vast ring around the approach vector, pounding any incoming into rubble with concentrated firepower. Another 5 head off alongside the incoming vector, looking for the source of the bombardment.

A Transmission from the AF Port Authority:

"The Theocracy of Anti-Funitism is at the moment in a state of civil unrest, though we are capable of sending some 1000 assorted rescue and medical staff if they are needed by you."

---

Imperator Celazk, had seen the first piece of debris on his long range sensors, then the fleet was to far out of range to do anything about it...and since the destruction of the CASCADE system, Mars has been at serious risk of falling debris.(Way to go team!) "Contact the Martian fleets, see if we can assist them." sighed Celazk.

The Ancalamo, a light transport, escorted by the destroyer Amraid approaches the zone. Its load composed of medical and humanitarian aid and a rescue team specialized in taking out people from beneath ruins.

The Transport lands near the former Crimmond Facility, the destroyer still high in orbit patrolling the surroundings.

OOC:

The Theocracy of Anti-Funitism shares a border directly with Crimmonds Martian Colony...I would assume that Crimmond, Mizar 3 or who ever will keep me Informed of any incoming debris, as my Anti-Asteroid Defenses were destroyed by MIDAS, and actually if MIDAS didn't wreck the CASCADE System we wouldn't be having much of a problem...Good work team!

Immediately, the LRR traveling mothership sets course for mars. Aboard the MS there are a large group of dropships being readied for launch in the cavernous ship bay.

The dropships are loaded up with all sorts of rescue and medical equipment, including special tunnel boring machines and prefab field hospitals.

OOC: Actually, AF, since Crimmond ICly hates your people's guts...

IC: The offer of assistance from Anti-Funitism has been rejected.

The offer of assistance from Sunset is accepted, mobile hospitals and work crews would be needed at this stage.

The Aelosian transport is greeted by an ordered chaos. As in 10% order, 90% chaos. The crews are siting through the now pulverized dome, while scientists are wandering around the two craters outside the destroyed city to see if there was anything in or on them that could disrupt the terraforming of Mars.

In space: The CSS Starflareis still edging the large asteroid into orbit, not wanting to risk breaking it into several large peices this close to the planet.

The CSS Lionsbane, also a dreadnaught, and the CSS Ransom Castle, heavy cruiser, arrive from Earth and head for one of the big fragments.

In the Valinon treaty port of Sheffield, Director General Gabriel, standing in for Baron-Administrator Zaybok sees the reports from the Crimmond territories.
"Send a communique to New Bergia and the other treaty ports on Earth and one back to Proxima. Also, inform the Crimmond government that we will contribute humanitarian aid and any assistance they may require. Now, what did our orbital satellites pick up?"
"This, Director General," Colonel Wayridge hands him a comp-pad.
"My God," breathes Gabriel. He looks at the shockwaves spreading out, the untold havoc wreaking scars across the face of the God of War's planet. "Send a message to Grenada as well, with the impending naval review at homeworld our main forces here are not up to full strength. I don't want to be surprised ourselves. Activate all the outer rings of the sensor nets, tie into the link-ups on Phobos and Deimos. I want all nearby interstellar debris tagged and monitored."
"Yes, Director General."

The scientist looks up at the Aelosians and blinks. He speaks in a deep Russian accent. "Looking for survivors in an impact crater?" He points them to the city. "All the bunkers are under the city, we're trying to figure out if anything about those rocks could harm the planet more than it has already."

The 50 ships activated moved out of their current orbit and into orbit over Mizar 3. Shuttles began to drop to the surface while teams appeared on the surface in a wash of energy.

Engineering teams in heavy power armor were the first SDF units on the scene, followed by medical teams in soft-suits. The power armor teams went to work digging out survivors while the medical teams distributed soft-suits to the colonists and patched up the lightly wounded. Those who were maimed or heavily wounded were taken to the ships - the lethally wounded but not dead were placed in cryogenic sleep or if they were first aboard placed in the reconstruction tank.

The bridge crews kept a watchful eye on the nations to the south just in case, though interfering with a mission of mercy would surely be beyond them.

---

"Got another one - mid-lower left arm."

The engineer hefted the unconsious woman out of the rubble - a beam had nearly crushed her head. It had saved her instead by deflecting debris around her. The medical tech working alongside bound the stump and stopped the blood flow. While the atmosphere was not lethal, it wasn't pleasant either so he stuffed her into a soft-suit and handed her off to one of the security team that was just reinforcing them.

They hustled her to a shuttle for transfer to a hospital - likely Pilon or Eniqcir. More were hurried aboard and the shuttle leapt off towards it's destination.

A ship appears in a streak of light, the CSS Brother's Keeper (http://home.earthlink.net/~alpha_zero_usm/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/hospitalship.jpg). A hospital ship and the first of it's class. Designed for disaster relief, the Empire never thought they would be sending it on it's first mission to one of the Empire's own territories, let alone the second largest province's capital.

It starts launching several dropships and atmosphere-capable cargo transports.

-----------------

The scientist that had spoken before looks up. "Yes, there is a lot of dust in the air and who knows what else. This entire area will take a long time to recover."

He looks up and see bright almost fifty streaks of fire shooting through the atmosphere, leaving trails of sonic booms. "It's about time they got here."

The ground crew robots move away from the pulsing fusion drives, and the LSO robot positioned at the opening of the ships bay waves the flight out. The five dropships soon lock onto the impact crater and start their descent.

(OOC: I can roll with that.)

A man in a neon green suit with air mask and lightsticks waved down the shuttle at the Amaranth airport. After the shuttle was quickly taxied into a hangar, the human cargo was unloaded and reloaded onto a short train to the hospital.

"Let's move, people! Some of these don't have a lotta time left! On the double! Nurse, how many we got in triage? Yeah, double it!"

Another ship made it's way into orbit over the impact site. It was not a hospital ship, nor a warship like the others. This was an explorer - one of the best when it came right down to it. Tilting to point its six sensor arrays at the impact site the Venture-B began gathering data. IR scans, gravemetric scans and sonar scans made their way to the teams on the ground. The data was analyized and sent out, broken down into a usable form.

It was also purged - no trace of how the data was collected was left. Teams on the ground distributed datapads to searchers with detailed maps showing access tunnels, IR hotspots, potential collapse zones, and other details that eased the search considerably.

---

Aid began to come in from the Republic as well. Food came in huge cargo containers tractored down from orbit. As they emptied they were converted to field hospitals and temporary dwellings by crews of engineers from the starships above. Cots and partitions were erected for not only the wounded, but those left homeless by the impacts.

---

The SDF Hercules raced through the depths of space. Weapon arrays glowed red in the darkness, and the shimmer of micro-meteorite hits on her shields could be seen occasionally. She was the tip of the spear - 4 more of the super-heavy cruisers wedged out behind her.

They were looking for the source of the meteors - they would likely reach it in minutes. The Oort cloud was the likely source, considering the vector. It could have been a random occurance - reasonably a 1% chance that there was a manevolent source chucking asteroids in-system for fun.

The dropship pilot is somewhat disconcerted by the lack of responsiveness. Soon, over 50 dropships had congregated in the space over Mizar 3.

"This is lead to flight, prepare for atmospheric entry now. Turquoise flight to Hotel Foxtrot, we are entering. Proceed to your LZ's and meet us at the crater. We are landing approximately 70 miles south of the holden crater. ETA 20 minutes."

The first four dropships scream through the atmosphere, soon entering the high stratosphere, where they level out and prepare to descend. They quickly drop to the LZ, and the fusion drives are shut off. Rescue crewman and dropship loadmasters soon file out of the ship's side doors. The cargo ramp lowers, and a horde of digging equipment follows. Boring machines, tunnel braces, veltilation systems, as well as several hoverbikes are brought out and assembled on the ground. The crew chief (an insectiod) checks the vehicles, and they soo proceed on their way to the crater. A pair of hoverbikes speeds out to the head of the convoy, in order to make contact with the rescue efforts at the collapsed dome. Soon, there is a very large number of dropships on the ground, each depositing their equipment on the planet's surface. Hovertractors tow the trains of prefab buildings to the crater site. Smaller dropships arrive above the collapsed dome very quickly, and land among the rubble, depositing rescue teams.

OOC: So there are something like 100 people to every survivor...

IC:
Survivors were starting to be few and far between. Mostly it was simply placing bits of a corpse into a bag for burial or cremation. The bags did the work of ID'ing the corpse - bits of tissue were broken down for DNA, which was then sampled and sent to the central database for distribution and identification.

The engineering teams pressed inward - it was a good chance to do a structural analysis. It was a grim thought, but it might help buildings in the future withstand similar impacts or lessen casualites. The target was the point of impact. The area was cooling rapidly, and they made their way quickly to the center while checking for survivors. Teams coming in behind checked in more detail - though it was not likely at this point that anyone had survived.

---

The five cruisers dropped out of warp, and began searching the area for anything unusual. Considering the vector and travel time, they began moving counter-clockwise through the area. They were looking for debris fields that might indicate a collision, or a damaged asteroid or comet that may have been the cause.

The responce comes from Earth, from the capital of the Empire. "We thank you for your offer, but there will be no rebuild effort of Moria City. The new capital will be Storm, the next dome to the south."

On the surface, more people were coming from the depths of the city, the count reaching to 1000. Others were trapped, but crews were converging on them, using orbital sensor data. The data showed that there were still hundreds in the excape tunnels that would soon turn into tombs. There was no food and the air was dust glogged and filthy. The water couldn't be trusted either.

One crew was working near the center of the city when the cities main Plasma Powerplant overheated, exploding in a ball of multicolored light that lasted only a split second, but left 300 more dead(the secondary one blew up during the first impact). Apparently the safgaurds, even the mechanical ones, were disabled by the impacts.

Awareness of the escape tunnels and the trapped civilians inside called for a change in tactics. The 24 men and women killed in the plasma explosion would be mourned later - they had died as heroes, running toward danger instead of away.

Another group moved from their bases in Sunset to the site - this time it was the elite '0' Division. Specialists in boarding and close quarters combat operations their heavy anti-armor weapons would be useful.

Battlesuits went to work with the fusion cannon mounted on both arms. Material vaporized in front of them, carving a shaft through the wreckage towards the tunnels. They worked in rotations, allowing their weapons to cool before jumping in and blazing away again.

The question was, even with 600 of them working non-stop, would they be in time?

Seeing the need for more than slow excavation equipment and watching the Sunset troops, the Crimmond Third Lancers are called in. While most of the workers had seen Mechs before, they had never seen a Scythe Enforcer in more than holograms.

The Ultra-Light 10 ton Mechs begin using the small SR lasers and in some cases grabbing rubble and tossing it aside. Accompanying them are several squads of Assault Marines, armed to the teeth(some actually including teeth as a weapon) and begin using explosives and disrupters to clear the entrances.

One team setting up an explosive charge looked up to see one of the Scythes literally pick a half a house up and toss it aside. "Damn...." one says, "I wouldn't want to explain THAT to the insurance company."

The other nods and they move away, blowing the charge moments later. Before the dust had cleared, dozens of people poured out, some carrying or dragging others. The medics gave each a rebreather and guided them away to the medical centers in and around the city.

Speed: 50 KPH

Armament:
1 SR Small Laser
1 SR Autocannon
42 Tear Gas Canisters
1 SR Jump-Pak

An improvement on the aging Union Class Enforcer, the Scythe has heavier armor and amaments. The overall look is more graceful than the Union Class, but is basicly the same, the exception being the Jump-Pak. It is designed for urban warfare and police duties.

OOC:
hah hah hah! it sure did Sunset...keep living the dream, just keep ignoring the fact that your country is a dump. *Bitterness*
