MNN Broadcast, July 25th, 2366
"Our top story tonight: President Fidelo Villanova, leader of the Republic of Sunset, has stepped aside."
The broadcast switches to a view of the ex-President talking to Senators and reporters outside of the capital building.
"This was apparently planned as the Senate was beginning a session as the decision was announced by Mr. Villanova. Immediatly the session turned to this new business, and a successor was elected in short order. We will get to the new President in a minute, but first Mr. Villanova's official announcement."
The broadcast shows Fidelo sitting on the edge of his desk, looking very relaxed and casual.
"People of the Republic, I have very much enjoyed the last few decades of service to the you. During this time we have made great strides in establishing the Republic as a power, not only on Mars but in the solar system as well. We are wealthier than ever, and a glance at the UN statistics," and here he breaks into a small grin, "Confirms my belief that we are one of the best nations out there."
He turns to face the camera more directly.
"None of this could have happened without the people of Sunset. No leader could be prouder, and no leader could ask for a better people. In truth, I will miss this job because of the people of the Republic. Thank you for allowing me to lead you."
The broadcast switches back to the studio and the anchor.
"We'll do more on Mr. Villanova later - Let's focus a bit on Edwin Smytheson, the new President."
Again, footage shifts to a younger man - perhaps 34 though it is hard to tell, speaking at what appears to be a trade conference.
"Edwin Smytheson - CEO of Liquid Design and now President of the Republic of Sunset. In order to look at the possible effects he will have on the Republic we can look at his corporate life."
"Mr. Smytheson started as a lower tier manager in Liquid Design 13 years ago. According to co-workers we have been able to contact he has worked his way up the rungs through a mixture of hard work and creative insight that has found him in the right place at the right time."
The broadcast switches to what appears to be an executive with a Liquid Design logo in the background.
"Luck had nothing to do with it - he is a master at putting himself and his ideas in the right place at the right time. His leaps of intuition are almost psychic."
The broadcast switches back to the studio.
"Edwin is married to Tathar Laurelin, an elf he met while travelling on Earth. They have two children."
The broadcast continues...
