(Thank you for reading that! hehe, I know. That's one thing about a total open-border, birth-certificate-less border. People have the tendency to over-vote, and it's plum hard to take a census! ;))

Ianapalis: The Heart of an Empire

Nobody really knows how big Ianapalis is - just that it's more than big enough. Located in the heart of the Kingdom of Shadoran, ancestral land of House Callahan, on the massive natural port of Adien Bay, Ianapalis is the clear center for Iansislean industry. Rail cars bring high grade coal by the ton from the rich deposits near the Noropian Gap, and barges milk Gadsanian iron ore down the River Jaizar and across Troobodia Bay to the mouth of Ianapalis. There, the largest steel mills in the Commonwealth at least, and probably in all of Tilsitia. The steel in turn fuels Ianapalis' other largest industry, shipbuilding.

However, Ianapalis is more than just an industrial center. It is also the nerve center of an Empire, one that stretches from the highest mountains of Tilsitia to the steaming jungles of Southeast Asia. The masters of Parliament control from the ancient halls of Jameston Place, its marble facade a symbol for Iansislean power across the world. Further down the broad Empire Street is Unity Square, with statues celebrating High King Ian I's founding of the Empire out of the Time of Blood, High King James I's giving of his Tablet of Laws to the people, and Queen Jessica I's granting power to the Dominions.

In the other direction, across the wind swept waters of Troobodia Bay, is Ian's Isle itself - a tiny rock jutting from the bay, formerly Adien Island, and renamed by the energetic King Ian IV of Shadoran (High King Ian I of the Empire of the Shield). It was used as a launching point for Ian's lightning conquest of the Shield. Every High King, from Ian himself to James III, has ruled from the pristine hallways of Castle Dun Adien, which sits atop Ian's Isle.

Retired Names: The Honor List
These ships have so distinguished themselves that the Admiralty has declared no other Iansislean ship shall ever bear their name:

HIMS (originally HCMS) Royal Standard: Completed in 1682 by King Ian IV of Shadoran, it would become the flagship of the Callahanian fleet during their wars of conquest in the late Time of Blood. The Standard was the largest warship built up to that point in the history of Tilsitia, displacing more than 1,500 tons on a keel 125 feet long. She was triple decked and armed with 94 cannons, with 28 of the new 24 pounder "long gun" being her lowest deck armament.

The Standard participated in several actions against enemy forces, but was used mostly as an intimidation forces. Reportedly, her very presence in Fort Jackson on a 'flag showing tour' convinced King Alfred VI of Upper Mansfield (House Laughlin) to ally with Shadoran. When at last, on July 3rd 1696, King Edward III of the Foothills (House Javial) surrendered, he signed the Article of Underlordship on the deck of the Standard,

It continued in Iansislean service for a further twenty years, with her designation changing from His Callahanian Majesty's Ship to His Iansislean Majesty's Ship. In 1718, she capsized and sunk in a storm off Cape Deliverance during the Noropian campaign. She was the first member of the Honor List in 1785 - a second ship (87 gun ship-of-the-line) was renamed simply HIMS Royal after HIMS Royal Standard was retired.

HIMS Southern Star: A 24 gun frigate, dispatched to New Shield (M-D Nusheld) at the request of the East Gallaga Company. Participated in several notable actions, both against rival imperial powers and natives. Generally held responsible for Iansislean dominance of north east Gallaga. Broken up in 1799.

HIMS Nestor: 40 gun frigate; product of modern Iansislean ship-building design. The last non-steampowered ship in the Royal Iansislean Navy. Most famous for her action in the Battle of Burke's Head during the Second Effitian Invasion, where (under the command of then-Captain Richard Tri) she boarded and took the 97-gun Effitian ship-of-the-line PS Eques. After the war, the Eques was given over, along with the rest of the Effitian fleet, to the R.I.N. While most of the ships were sent to the breakers, Eques was outfitted with a modern steam engine and entered Iansislean service as HIMS Embassy, where she was to become one of the longest serving ships in Iansislean history.

HIMS King James I: A pre-Stalwart battleship of 17,000 tons. Only one year after her completion, she served as the flagship of the Iansislean Advance Fleet during the New Tiamat Crisis under the command of Commodore Sir Thomas Gurney, where she and her fleet were engaged off the island of Salvador. King James was sunk with the loss of all but 12 hands, most of whom died enroute to or in Beddgelern prison camps.

Iansislean nobility: EXPLAINED!

(ooc: Many have gathered that Iansisle has a large and complicated net of noble titles and peerages. Until now, I hadn’t ever really tried to sort all of it out, but now that I have this thread devoted to myself, I figure “no time like the present!” Unless you’re a procrastinator. Which I am. So, in this case, it’s actually a break on my normal ideals!)

Book I : Titles in the Empire of the Shield

PART I : Peerages and The Cruinniú

Every rank of nobility above baronet (see Part II for information on relative ranks) is considered a ‘peer’, in that they get a seat in the traditional cruinniú, or gathering, of Iansislean nobility.

The cruinniú is one step in Iansislean order of review. The ‘order of review’ is the system whereby the actions of small bodies, such as the High King or the Council of Ministers, are reviewed by larger bodies, such as the cruinniú or the parliament. The official inverted pyramid has the High King at the bottom, the Council next up, the Cruinniú on the next rung, and the Parliament - be it Commonwealth Combined or Imperial - on the top. In other words, if the High King makes a decision, it has to be cleared by the Council, then (in theory) the cruinniú, before making it to the combined or imperial parliament for final checkings. The cruinniú’s step is listed ‘in theory’ because the cruinniú is not a perminant institution like the other three. It can only assemble when the High King or four of the seven Kings calls for one, and must dissolve immedietly after the issue for which it has been called has been resolved.

This results in very few cruinniús ever being called, and that step of the Order is usually skipped, sending issues either straight from the council into law, or to the parliament if the Prime Minister wishes to hear it (or the majority passing the bill in the council was one or less). When they are called, the High King acts as the president and the six kings as an oversight pannel. If it is a domestic matter, only peerages within the Empire are called, and the matter is sent to the Imperial Parliament. If it is an international matter, every peerage in the Commonwealth (as well as two representitives from Troobodia (elected by referandum) and forty three from Gadsan (appointed by the Trader’s Assembly), which don’t have noble titles) is invited, and the matter is passed along to the Commonwealth Combined Parliament.

Part II : General Ranks of Noblity

NOTE: In legal matters, there is no such order; every peerage gets equal voice in the cruinniú. The ranks really only apply for social status and in the matter of address (see Part III for proper addressing). Also, people who hold a ‘higher’ peerage are more likely to also hold several ‘lower’ peerages. Also, in the case where a person of a non-royal rank above Viscount has more than one title, the highest of those titles is passed down to their heir. However, their heir is NOT a peer.

^: Because of the nature of the treaties offered by (the King Ian IV of Shadoran, later) High King Ian I after the conquest of the Shield, the other six kingdoms were allowed to retain their regal titles. Also, the High King of the Empire retains his families previous title. For instance, High King James III of the Empire is also King James VIII of Shadoran. Likewise if King Alexander IV (Laughlin) were to become High King Alexander II of the Empire, he would retain his previous title. The High Kingship and its relation to the other regents of the Shield is fully detailed in Part .

*: Prince/Princess is a formality title applied to the family of the Kings and High King, and is not a peerage. The crown prince (or princess) of the High King, by tradition, takes the title ‘Prince of Ianapalis’, which is still a peerless title. They may be granted peerages as with all others, yet retain the title ‘Prince’ and their first (and, in formal conversation, sur)names in address. For instance, before High King Toto IV’s death, his eldest son would have been ‘The Prince of Ianapalis, James Callahan’ when announced and ‘Prince James’ in conversation. If his father were to give him the title ‘Earl of Strawon’ in addition, he would be ‘The Prince of Ianapalis, James Callahan, the Right Honorable Earl of Strawon’ when announced and ‘Prince James’ when addressed. His brother would have been ‘The Prince Brian Callahan’ when announced, and ‘Prince Brian’ when addressed.

†: Archduke is not a title native to the Shield. It was imported from Tharia following the assasination attempt on High King James III by the Archduke of Sentry Island. Sentry Island was then annexed by the Empire, and James declared the new Archduke of Sentry Island. For all intents and purposes, in its Sheildian form, it is simply a higher form of Duke, and has not been given a seperate entry. The title will be explained more fully in the Tharian section.

°: A baronet is simply a heriditary knight, and takes the title Sir (male) or Dame (female) <first name> <last name>. In Iansislean tradition, unlike British, the eldest son (or daughter, if there is no son) carries a Knightship of the Empire, and is referred to as Sir/Dame <first name> <last name>. So, for instance, if Robert Bakes were granted a baronet, he would be Sir Robert Bakes, and his only child (a female) would be Dame Elizabeth Bakes.

#: There are currently eight non-Imperial Orders recognized by various crowns, seven of which are recognized by the High King.

1 general = 0.86 USD

Coin/worth (what appears on the front; color)

1 keneral = 0.01 Gnl (the roman numeral 'I'; copper)
1 quineral = 0.05 Gnl (an elephant; copper)
1 teneral = 0.10 Gnl (a tiger; copper)
1 weneral = 0.20 Gnl (Hermes; silver)
1 dimideral = 0.50 Gnl (St. Patrick; silver)
----
1 Gnl (King James I; silver)
5 Gnl (King Ian I; silver)
10 Gnl (Queen Jessica I; silver)
20 Gnl (King Ian V; gold)
50 Gnl (King James II; gold)
100 Gnl (King Ian VI; gold)
1,000 Gnl (King Ian III; gold)
10,000 Gnl (King John II; gold)
50,000 Gnl (Queen Alice I; gold)
100,000 Gnl (King Toto III; gold)
500,000 Gnl (King Toto IV; gold)
1,000,000 Gnl (King Ian IV; gold)
10,000,000 Gnl (King Ian II; gold)

All general coins have the value, always in Roman numerals (excepting those less than a general, where it is instead an Arabic numeral fraction), and the motto 'sine disceptatione magnitudinem habere non possumus' ('we cannot have might without debate')

(note: the coins are not actually made of the metal listed, but rather of an alloy to make them appear as if they are. And yes, there is no such thing as paper currency in Iansisle ;))

(another note: I should probably mention as well that anything over the 1,000 Gnl coin is extremely rare.)

The Centrist Coalition
Seats: 535 (26.75%)
Leader: Hiresh Dhawan

Commonwealth Party [403/535]: The senior member, by a healthy margin of the Centrist Coalition, the Commonwealth Party is one of the longest entrenched parties in Iansislean politics, dating back to the day of High King James I and the start of parliamentary rule in Iansisle. Then, it was considered a fringe group, struggling for nearly one hundred years to attain its goal of independent government for the Empire’s provinces. That goal was at last realized under High Queen Jessica I when she granted self-government in internal affairs and the right to seperate representation in a Combined Parliament to what became the five Dominions.

Today, the Commonwealth Party has come to represent unity rather than division. Although it still holds the rights of the Dominions to be sacred, it did support Free Trade and the crown’s war to keep Dianatran from breaking all ties with Ianapalis. Likewise, it was opposed to the Empire’s disenfranchisement of Dianatran after the war, as well as its earlier decision to annex the Grand Duchy of Sentry Island from Tharia.

Hiresh Dhawan, Commonwealth’s leader, was the first non-Shieldian to represent a party in the plurality, as well as the first non-Commonwealther to represent a party in the Combined Parliament. Dhawan hails from the Delta region of the Domain of Iansislean Gallaga, a territory under the control of the East Gallaga Company of Ianapalis. He immigrated to the Shield twenty years ago, and after attending school at Royal Standard University became a major force in Imperial politics. He made the jump to Commonwealth-wide politics eleven years ago, and just two years ago became Commonwealth’s leader. His primary issue, the adoption of Gallaga as a member of the Commonwealth and the abolition of the East Gallaga Company, has had to be put on hold with the de-stabilization of the area.

Unity Party [91/535]: By and large considered to be a marginal party at best in Iansisle, Unity often struggles with its role. With 88 seats, most coming from electorates within the Dominion of Gadsan, it is powerful enough to get its issues on the Centrist agenda, but not large enough to force them through despite Commonwealth’s wishes.

Unity is the most liberal member of the Centrist Coalition, though it would be considered most conservative by most modern states. On its agenda are things such as the out-law of “yellow dog” contracts, though most in the Centrist Coalition don’t take them quite seriously.

Lance Greenson, Unity’s leader, hails from Lakeriverwood, Gadsan, and actually grew up down the street from Edward Tarriff. He’s a most unremarkable man, but has managed to hold the party together in troubled times. Considering his age and the fact he’s spent seven years as the party’s head, Unity is looking into politely retiring him, and may use this election as an excuse.

Prosperity Party [30/535]: By far the smallest member of the Centrist Party, Prosperity is also the most conservative after Free Trade’s departure. They found their niche within the Empire, mostly in the Kingdom of Vesshampton, where their leader not only hails from but is hailed in.

King John IV MacIntyre of Vesshampton is both Prosperity’s leader and the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Dhawan’s government. The slight Shieldian nobleman is most famed for the sheer sloth of the MoFA under his administration. After Prosperity’s poor showing in the last election, MacIntyre is being given ‘one last chance’ as the party’s head.

The Liberal Coalition
Seats: 604 (30.2%)
Leader: Alfredo D’Carlonia

Tharian Secessionist Party [298/604]: Representing some 95% of Tharia’s votes, the TSP is far and away the most powerful party in the Liberal Coalition. While its favor outside the Dominion is negligable, it has aligned itself with some of the faster-growing parties in the Empire.

D’Carlonia’s main concern is that the other parties will grow so much faster than the TSP - which has more or less tapped out all of its resources already - that it will cease to be a major part of the Liberal Coalition it has built. He hopes that the fracture in the Centrist Coalition - which has temporarily left the LC in the plurality, pending the election - will give his coalition power long enough to secure Tharia greater independence before it’s too late.

The TSP’s old leader, the persuasive Nicomedo Sabino, was assassinate by Tharian Nationalists when they tried to elevate Archduke Sentry Island to the High Kingship by the Right of Succession. It was theorized that Sabino’s (a moderate) assassination would give control to the more radical elements of the party, but D’Carlonia, Sabino’s chosen successor, withheld power.

Independence Party [174/604]: Similar to the TSP, but generalized for all the Dominions. Independence is predicted to lose major seats in the next election with the disenfranchisement of Dianatran while that province is rearranged, as most of its seats came from that Dominion. Led by one Taylor Bullton of Delton, Gadsan.

Iansislean Democratic-Socialist Party [122/604]: Though it slipped slightly in the last election, the Democratic Socialists are expected to make a full recovery, and perhaps even break one hundred seats for the first time in the party’s history. Led by Claude St. Jacques of Noropia, who started out life as a mere coal miner, the Democratic Socialists have rapidly gained popularity among the industrial masses all over the Commonwealth, though they have so far had trouble establishing a majority in more than a few heavily urbanized electorates.

Iansislean Green Party [9/604]: The Iansislean Green Party, led by Fencourt Judd of Ianapalis, finds itself in an awkward position: it can neither court the favor of the masses nor the elite. Environmental concern in Iansisle is extremely low, and the Green Party is expected to lose two or three of its seats in the coming elections.

Iansislean Communist Party [1/604]: Represented by ‘Judicator’ (for some odd reason, ICP members always choose to put a pseudonym when running for office, perhaps to keep safe from corporate reprisals) from an electorate outside Westergate, Iansisle. The ICP, because of its eccentric behavior, often does not appeal to the masses as broadly as the Democratic Socialist Party. The Democratic Socialists, fearing that the ICP may be stealing votes from them in key electorates, have proposed a merge, though the ICP is holding out for the time being.

The Conservative Coalition
Seats: 780 (39.0%)
Leader: Edward Tarriff

Free Trade Party [260/780]: Another old party, this one dating back to the mid nineteenth century, Free Trade opposed Commonwealth for a long time. It has always been the darling of the Iansislean corporations, whereas Commonwealth started out very liberal. However, with the achievement of Commonwealth’s goal (..of Commonwealth...confused yet? ) the two parties started to drift together, until Edward Tarriff established their first coalition in the early 1990s.

Free Trade recently lost the support of the corporations, but its breaking with the (in some opinions) dangerously liberal Unity and Commonwealth parties leads many to assume the two groups will have a reunion very soon.

Imperialist Party [258/780]: Along with Commonwealth and the Royalists, the Imperialist Party is one of the three oldest in Iansisle. However, the Imperialists find themselves out thought more and more often by younger, more dynamic conservative parties such as Conservation and Tradition. Sir Humphrey, famed for his adventures in south east Asia in the name of the crown, is just about ready to be retired.

The Imperialists are ardent expansionists. Ironically, one of their main campaign platforms is that the East Gallaga Company be abolished, but that Gallaga be included in the Empire as a province rather than granted Dominion status.

Conservation Party [142/780]: A fairly new party, Conservation - despite the name, which many claim brings up images of the Green Party - is one of the largest conservative presences in parliament. The Earl of Dirwisham is the de facto leader of the coalition with the senility of Sir Humphrey.

Tradition Party [99/780]: A relatively new force, Tradition is finding popular support among those who wish to return to the “good old days” before James III’s technological reforms. It is led by Sir Walter Brown of the Foothills.

Iansislean Royalist Party [21/780]: An ancient and always marginal party, the Royalists are just what their names imply; those who wish the abolition of Parliament and return of ancient privileges to the crown. Unusually, even the High King condemns the extremests, reminding the public there was a very good reason his ancestors granted them rights.

The Neo-Royalist Party
Seats: 1 (0.05%)
Leader: Sir Wesley Fumpleham, KNO

Representing one electorate just outside Thorntree, the Neo-Royalists seek to replace House Callahan on the High King’s throne with the heir to House Whitman. Inside Thortraia, they account for only about 33% of the popular vote. Outside it, the number is much closer to zero, but the King of Thorntree’s influence will always ensure they have that one seat.

The Progressive Reform Party
Seats: 81 (4.05%)
Leader: Jean-Benoît Foisnon

Relative newcomers, the Progressive Reform Party has been making waves on the regional level lately in Noropia. After they captured roughly three per cent of the seats on the Imperial Parliament, the PRP decided they were ready to shoot for the Commonwealth Combined Parliament. Foisnon will be running in the PRP’s strongest electorate, outside Cape Deliverance, Noropia.

Falling somewhere between the Unity and the Democratic-Socialists ideologically, many observers are interested to see where a truly moderate liberal party will fall in the scheme of Iansislean politics. Though there are no reports of attempts to form a coalition yet, many expect the PRP to be pursued by both the Centrist and the Liberal Coalitions.

Very nice read... I like all the information frankly because it gives your country life. Not to mention the fact that your country has tech that is more aligned with my country's own. Maybe we should RP more together, eh?

Ah, and I apologize, though, for dropping out on my old Valerian Executes 10,000,000 people thread. I had exams to take, and the influx of the interactions within the thread overwhelmed me. :(

Hmm... maybe I should also structure my factbook after yours. Then, people might actually read it now and then when I bump it up tomorrow. :)

OOC: A 2000-member Parliament? How does anything get done?

Simple answer? It doesn't ;). Longer answer? Through a well established and extensive series of bribes, corrupt local bureaucrats, overlapping and undefined jurisdictions, and sheer will-power.

((heh, if you add in the Empire/Dominion, kingdom, county, and municipal level governments, there are probably more legislators than educators on the government payroll!))

Fultonia - I'm sure you'll survive. Iansislean diplomats are on the job! (*wonders why no one is reassured*) Seriously, though, I've had a lot of fun putting together this factbook! I recommend it as a fulfilling activity for the whole family! (and it's low fat!)

M.V.: High praise from a roleplayer who has done much to earn my respect! Thank you very much!

I've read your factbook (several times, in fact) and I quite enjoyed it. I especially liked the explanation of the monarchs - I was thinking of doing something like that for Iansisle, but haven't quite had the time/motivation worked up. Anyway, I agree when you say our countries are very much alike - reading your factbook is actually what drew me to participate in that execution thread.

Speaking the execution thread, that's honestly no problem. I certainly understand how much press there can be on your time during exams - I feel as though I've hardly been behind my computer for the past couple weeks! If you ever want to do a proper diplomatic thread, I'm all for it - though it might be best to let it sit for a couple weeks while my exam season goes through its last death twitches.

In short, thank you all very much for reading and responding! It's always great to know that my work is being read, and I appreciate any comments -- positive or negative; I can only get better through criticism -- y'all or other may have.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I just wanted to save here for all future generations to read that I (at long last) have broken into the top-100 in the world of something! Hooray 90th most politically apathetic citizens in the world!

*looks at post above* ...I wonder why..? ;)

Hm, 's nice to know fairly pointless little things like that Ian III was on the throne when WoS first heard of Iansisle, and that he was about to die (presumably). I wonder how the change in monarch, after a relatively long rule by the previous one, impacted upon Iansislian foreign policy at the begining of Walmingtonian colonialism in Gallaga.

Well I will to-morrow when I'm at the pub.

It's a really old worldy pub.

Reminds me of Walmington.

don't you RP Pre-WWI Tech?

I did at one point in time. However, I much prefer a gradually increasing technology base; that way, I can explore all sorts of different areas. My first post involved Irvin G. Graye's first powered flight; now, we have early cold war era jets and such things.

Hm, 's nice to know fairly pointless little things like that Ian III was on the throne when WoS first heard of Iansisle, and that he was about to die (presumably). As a matter of fact, that's something I spend my free time thinking about too :D. The Ian-Alexander-Toto-James procession is one of the history periods I have best sketched out in my head. Old Ian III is manipulated in his senility by the ambitious First Lord of the Admiralty and his younger son into taking control of and then expanding the Company’s holdings in Gallaga and SE Asia; then a cold spell in the winter of '51 finishes him off.

Young, idealistic Alexander - sometimes considered the first of the true liberal Shieldian monarchs - takes the throne, but quickly proves less manipulatable than his father. At last, Toto starts to spread rumors of his brother’s homosexuality about the right ears at court. Alexander ends up taking a one way trip off Dun Adien’s ramparts to “preserve the High King’s position” (which was still somewhat tenuous 60 years after the forging of the Empire). Toto edges into the throne. His reign is marked by efficiency at the cost of liberty, in country, court, and family. His eldest son, James, grows up resenting his father and everything he stands for.

Once James takes the throne - despite an attempt to disinherit him by his dying father - he institutes sweeping reforms. The noblemen of Shadoran are given a voice for the first time in local and imperial dealings, the serfs are freed, and a tablet outlining basic human rights (several years before the US bill of rights or French rights of man and the citizen). Ian IV, his son, and James II, his grandson, both find it fashionable to continue to grant new liberties. In some ways, the phenomena was self-perpetuating; each year, some new right had to be granted the people to keep king and country unified against the increasingly powerful noblemen enfranchised by James I. At last, the Imperial Parliament was free to assemble of its own will, and the structure of the modern Iansislean state took full form.

Toto II, though more of a credit to the name that his great-great-grandfather, saw that unless some way could be found to curtail the momentum that the liberty-granting had gathered, the Shieldian state would eventually collapse in on itself - but then, that’s a story for another day. ;)

:An amused, if slightly worried, Imperial TAG:

Nice. Of course, most people know me for far-modern tech and space, but I've been moving into modern tech. In fact, the last time I did anything in space was February, and since then I've been almost exclusively modern tech(maybe some fantasy, though it's more in the Lovecraftian horror direction now). It's but a simple matter to step back in time even more, though I'll generally keep the same government in action.

Looks like we're about to crash into eachother, what with my expansion into Micronesia and my eyes looking further south...not to mention the North American situation. A nice factbook, congratulations.

((Two things today: first, a population total and breakdown for Iansisle and her possesions! You'll note that 'Colonies' refer to overseas holdings (but not Gallaga or Batam), the Archduchy of Sentry Island is included in the Tharian rankings, and this is all OOC information - there hasn't been an official census anywhere except Troobodia ;). These numbers also supercede anything in the first post; I'll get around to editing that later.

Second, please check out the Official Iansislean Website™ (http://www.freewebs.com/driquan/)!))

And, from all of us here on the Shield, good night. :)))

A

Ádien, Bay: Port of Ianapalis. One of the finest natural harbors of the Shield; has been a naval and shipbuilding port since the time of the Sentrians.

Ádien, Island: Small granite island located just outside Bay Ádien and modern Ianapalis. Location of Dûn Ádien, the royal palace of Iansisle.

Analia: Historic capital of Sentry Island and center of the Sentrian Empire. Located to the south of Wyclyfian colony of Harbor City on a hill overlooking Troobodia Bay. The Archduke of Analia is the nominal heir to the Sentrian Empire, although that position has been unclaimed since the Weshieldian invasion of 1603.

Antangaux: Noropian city and province on the northern end of the Noropian Gap.

B

Benindo Mountains: Range which separates Tharia from Dianatran. After the Iansislean Civil War in 1938, a the province of Kulan on the eastern side of the mountains was ‘awarded’ to Tharia for their loyalty to the Grand Empire.

Benon: Historic name for the city of Château. Currently used to refer to the city’s administrative center. See: Château.

C

Château: The name of the largest city and capital of Noropia. Historic name was actually Benon but Shadoranite traders mistook the ducal palace for the name of the city. After the Shieldian conquest in 1729 the name was made official.

Clyfton-on-Daldon: Small town in the central Vesshampton.

Copplestone: Town in Troobodia. Copplestone is the home to Hudson Rockets, the primary manufacturers of jet engines and rockets in Iansisle. It also houses the launching pads for Iansisle’s Royal Space Exploration Corps, but that program has been neglected due to war and other concerns.

D

Daldon Basin: Name for the entire Daldon river basin, technically. More often refers to a specific area directly adjacent to the river between Vesshampton and Clyfton-on-Daldon that is heavily industrialized.

Daldonia: Archaic name. See Vesshampton

Daldon, River: The River Daldon is the second longest on the Shield, being beaten out by the River Mans by a mere twenty miles. Runs from the Great Northern Range in Thortraia to Troobodia Bay at Vesshampton. The Kingdom of Vesshampton’s territory, prior to post-independence treaties, was described by Sentrian officials as “the watershed of the Daldon”.

Del: Historic province located on the right bank of the Jaizar Mouths in Gadsan. Eliminated as an administrative unit in 1954 when Gadsan was annexed to the United Kingdom of the Shield.

Dirwisham: An agricultural county in northern Shadoran. The Earldom of Dirwisham is one of the oldest and most respected noble titles on the Shield.

Dront: Name for the last Effitian province on the Jaizar before Gadsan. Historically Gadsani, Dront was conquered in 1102. After the stunning victory in the Third Effitian Invasion, Shieldian peace negotiators briefly considered annexing Dront but decided to forgo the trouble after the Effitian team threatened to walk out over the issue.

E

Editraequán: Name for one of the three governorships into which Weshield was divided under the Sentrian Empire. Immediately after independence in 1091, Editraequán joined with its neighbor Oeseld. In 1147, Oeseld annexed Mansbâr to become the new state of Mansbâr-Oeseld (with the coming of the English language in the fourteenth century, Weshield). Editraequán is located on the southwestern tip of the Shield near Cape Jackson. Its name lives on in Dûn Editraequán, the former royal palace of Weshield. Editraequán is also used as the name of an electoral district in the United Kingdom of the Shield.

Effit: Effit is the large, sprawling state bordering Iansisle. It occupies the north eastern corner of Tilsitia, bounded roughly by the Median Mountains in the west, the Noropian Sea to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the east, and Aenate Mountains to the south. Most of Effit is flat steppes, which gave rise to great cavalry based empires in the centuries before Christ. In the fourth century, the Tribe of Ibrahaim, hailing from the Jaizar Forks area, managed to unite large parts of the steppe and instill the people with a sense of loyalty. The basic state, unhindered by outside invasions, has survived over sixteen centuries, although the internal structure has been raked by discord on a fairly regular basis. At one time, Effit may have expanded into southern Tharia and as far south in Gadsan as Lakeriverwood, though that is uncertain. It certainly did reach into Healdsburg and Ryansisle. Although Effit has shrunk greatly from its peak in the fifteenth century, it remains the most populous and largest state in Tilsitia, with a population eighteen times greater than Healdsburg and five times greater than the Shield.

Effitian Plains: See Effitian Steppes

Effitian Steppes: Large fertile stretch of flat land which occupies the Jaizar river valley. The state of Effit is centered around these plains and has lent its name to them.

F

Fort Jackson: Modern city in Weshield centered around the military installation of the same name. Historically, the Weshieldians preferred not to use Raen Bay as a naval center, relying instead on Mansmouth, because of its proximity to Cape Jackson. However, the Grand Empire established large shipyards there as part of its buildup during the Dénian War and fortified the area. Much of the population of nearby Dûn Editraequántown moved - either of their own will or at imperial mandate - and soon Fort Jackson was the most populous city in Weshield. Fort Jackson was bombarded by the battleship Gurney in the months before the Gull Flag Revolution and has yet to recover its position as a premier industrial center.

Furthingham: Township of 65,000 located near Shadoran-Vesshampton border. Furthingham is historically an agricultural center but recently has gained prominence as a shipyard.

G

Gadsan: Name for the river valley that cuts southwest from the Effitian steppes to Troobodia Bay between the Median Mountains and the Great Northern Range. At some points - such as north of Lakeriverwood - the valley is as narrow as ten miles and bordered by high cliffs; at others, nearly a hundred miles leading into rolling foothills. The Jaizar itself takes up a large portion of the valley’s land area, averaging almost a mile wide at that part of its course (as compared to an average of three to four miles wide in Effit).
The river has historically been an important trade connection and a source of wealth for the Gadsani who dwell in the valley. Isolated from the Shield and Sentrian domination by the Jaizarmarch and on the very fringes of Effitian power, the Gadsani developed a oligarchic republic in the tenth century. A series of skirmishes with the Numerhammer Empire in the late eleventh century and the Effitian conquest of Dront led to the splintering of the republic in 1155 into a group of petty states, which did manage to unite seven times in the face of Effitian expansionism and defeat the invaders.
In 1724, a series of stunning Shieldian victories saw all of Gadsan save Dront annexed to the Grand Empire. Gadsan was granted dominion status as an independent state within the Shieldian Commonwealth in 1886. It joined with Noropia and Troobidia in opposing the Gull Flag Revolution in 1953 but an Effitian invasion the next year forced Gadsan to rely on the protection of the United Kingdom of the Shield. On 17 October 1954, Gadsan agreed to surrender its sovereignty to the United Kingdom in exchange for protection from Effit.

Gallaga: The largest colonial possession of Iansisle. Gallaga was a chief supplier of textiles to the Shield after its discovery by Shadoranite merchants in the early sixteenth century. However, Weshieldian domination in the South China Sea threatened to choke out Shadoranite interests. In 1587 a route to the east of Borneo, avoiding Weshieldian possessions in Sarawak, was found and the East Gallaga Company was founded in 1598. It received a royal charter from Queen Jessica II of Shadoran in 1599 for monopoly status on Gallagan imports. However, foreign pressure turned a company into an empire in the mid eighteenth century as Calarca battled the Grand Empire in Gallaga and Gallanesia. Eventually, Calarca won the rich spice islands and Iansisle the lion’s share of Gallaga. Currently, Iansislean control is centered in Nuseld, a city in the Ganges delta. The Iansislean Raj extends east to Burma, west to Delhi, and south into Orissa as far as the Godavari.

H

Harbor City: The largest city on Sentry Island. Harbor City was founded almost on top of the Sentrian port city of Marnos by the Wyclyfians during their abortive attempt to imitate Weshieldian and Shadoranite overseas colonialism in 1605. Although Wyclyfe was never able to subjugate the entire island, nor even a large chunk of it, and an entire army corps was destroyed by the Sentrians outside Analia, Harbor City has retained its name and - since the Shieldian annexation in 1726 - been the capital of the Archduchy of Sentry Island.

Healdsburg: Small Stalinist state south of Effit and east of Ryansisle. Healdsburg was formed in revolution in 1926 from the southern provinces of Effit across the Aenate Mountains. In 1928, a treaty between Ryansisle, Effit and Healdsburg established the ‘Matteton Corridor,’ a narrow strip of primarily arid land made up of former Ryansislean territory that stretched from Healdsburg’s nucleus one hundred and fifty miles to the Dianatranian border. The Grand Empire of the Shield greatly protested the treaty, which ended Ryansislean-Effitian border disputes and threatened a unification of Tilsitian states against Iansisle.
Healdsburg is most famous as a dumping ground for Iansislean exiles. Famous refugees of recent years have included the Archduke of Sentry Island, Jessica Princess of Shadoran, Sir Ian O’Bannon and the Baron von Numerhammer. However, some exiles, such as labor leader Lawrence Madders, are sent instead to Roania.

I

Ianapalis: Capital and largest city of both the Grand Empire and the United Kingdom of the Shield. By the Census of 1954, Ianapalis has a population of more than 9,000,000, three times more people than any other city in Iansisle and as many as any in Gallaga. Ianapalis was founded in 1698, when the size required to administer the Grand Empire exceeded the available space on Ian’s Island and overflow had to be moved to the mainland.
As the center of power for the Grand Empire, Ianapalis drew in people from across Shadoran and the Shield as well as heavy industry to support the burgeoning economy of the nineteenth century. However, even in Ianapalis labor frequently fell short of demand; poor Tharians, Dianatranians and Gallagans quickly filled in the gaps, much to the disgust of Shieldian ethnic purists. The poorer inhabitants were increasingly limited to an unofficial ghetto east of MacDunn Street while the rich lived in the posh western quarter. Even after the Gull Flag Revolution, the sharp divide in Ianapalis at MacDunn is still evident.
Sights to see in Ianapalis include Dûn Ádien, Jameston Place, the International Tower, Unity Square, Gallaga Street, the Dûn Sâdôra ruins, the Whitman Tower, Feinwick Point and the Grand Street Steelworks.

J

Jaizar Forks: Located roughly twenty seven miles south of Veritas, Effit, the Forks are where the Haela, Quanus, and Pouda Rivers come together to form the Jaizar.

Jaizarmarch: Name for the marshy territory on the left bank of the River Jaizar in Gadsan. Historically part of Shadoran.

Jaizar Mouths: The delta of the River Jaizar. The river splits into four main trunks and thousands of smaller streams; the port city of Delton lies along the southernmost trunk near Troobodia Bay. The sheer volume of silt dumped into the bay every year by the Jaizar has led to a steady expansion of the mouths into the water; scientists theorize that the port of Delton may become unusable by large draft ships in as soon as fifty years. Jaizarmarch is located on the left bank of the river and Del on the right.

Jaizar, River: The longest river in Tilsitia. Originates in seven separate places in the Aenate Mountains in Effit; three of the largest tributaries come together at the Jaizar Forks to form the river. The Jaizar arcs north through the Effitian plain, picking up large quantities of silt, before carving its way between the Median Mountains and the Great Northern Range to the Jaizar Delta on Troobodia Bay. The river plays a special part in Gadsani mythology and nationalism. Effit has long desired the Gadsan Valley and the Jaizar Mouths but been frustrated by Shieldian expansion. Lakeriverwood, Gadsan and Veritas, Effit are important cities located along the Jaizar’s banks.

K

Kulan: A coastal town and province in trans-Benindo Tharia between Carlonia and the Dianatranian province of Falhurst. From AD 420 to 1093, Kulan was the primary outpost of the Sentrian Empire in Dianatran. To date, Kulan remains the most heavily Sentrian area of the world exclusive of Sentry Island itself - Kulaners still speak a language more closely related to Sentrian Latin than either Tharian or Dianatranian. After the Sentrians lost Kulan to the Dianatranians, the province was integrated into Numerhammer Empire. It gained independence in 1115 but was reconquered by the Reformed Empire of Dianatran in 1347. In 1749, Kulan was annexed along with the rest of Dianatran to the Grand Empire.
After receiving Dominion status in 1910, Kulan was a sticky issue in relations between Dianatran and Tharia (which then included Sentry Island), both of whom felt they had equal claims to the territories. Commonwealth adjudicators, fearful of renewed troubles, awarded Kulan to Dianatran in 1912. However, the province was given as a reward to Tharia for her loyalty in the 1938 Iansislean Civil War. Kulan remains a part of Empire of Tharia, even if she did lose Sentry Island to the United Kingdom of the Shield.

L

Lakeriverwood: Capital and largest city in Gadsan. During the Grand Empire, Lakeriverwood was considered the 'second city' (to Ianapalis) and the Commonwealth's financial capital. The city remains important even after the Gull Flag Revolution and the re-annexation of Gadsan; its modern population is well over three million people.

M

Mansbâr: Mansbâr was a Sentrian principality located in the north of Editraequán, just west of Dalenshire. In 1091, Ânabara Prince of Mansbâr led a pan-Shieldian force to victory over the Sentrian Empire at the Battle of Dalenford. In 1147, Mansbâr was conquered by Oeseld - which had already annexed Editraequán - to become part of of Mansbâr-Oeseld, the largest Erarde on the Shield. When the state officially switched to the English language, its name was changed to Weshield. See: Weshield

Mansbâr Nor: When the Principality of Mansbâr fell to the Erarde of Oeseld in 1147, the major nobles took the opportunity to create an independent state out of the Mansbârian Normarch. Although Mansbâr-Oeseld attempted to invade Mansbâr Nor several times, the new Erarde kept its independence. With the coming of the English language, Mansbâr Nor changed its name to Mansford. See: Mansford

Mansbâr-Oeseld: See Mansbâr, Weshield

Mansford: One of the original seven kingdoms of the Shield. Mansford was formed by breakaway nobles from Manbâr after that Principality was annexed by Oeseld in 1147. Mansbâr Nor changed its name to Mansford when Odâlà Res Mansbâr Nor switched the official language from Ancient Shieldian to English in 1458. Mansford is usually considered the least consequential of the seven kingdoms; though it has a larger population than Thortraia, it also lacks Thortraia's substantial coal deposits. Upper Mansford, the capital and largest city in the area, has a population of only 90,000; Shields End, the second largest, has a population of 25,000. Nearly all of Mansford's 1,560,000 residents are involved in agricultural industries. Mansford, along with all other Shieldian Kingdoms, lost its independence with the Constitution of 1953.

Mansmouth: The second largest city in Weshield, Mansmouth - and its twin city Nenton in Mansford - straddle the mouth of the River Mans. Mansmouth is also the largest port city on the inhospitable western coast of the Shield. Mansmouth’s modern population is more than two hundred and fifty thousand and it is the home port for more than a quarter of the Iansislean merchant marine.

Mans, River The River Mans is the longest river on the Shield, stretching from its delta at Mansmouth two hundred and sixty miles to the east. Its headwaters are only fifteen miles from the River Thorial, one of the major tributaries of the River Daldon.

N

Nenton: A small city on the north bank of the River Mans in Mansford. Nenton owes its prosperity to nearby Mansmouth. Weshield considered its claims to Nenton to be strong but the case was never adjudicated before the dissolution of the Grand Empire.

Normarch: Normarch, as a general term, is often used to describe the northern boundaries of a country. Normarch was used by Manbâr in reference to its possessions north of the River Mans. Shadoran used Normarch to describe the border with the Javian Kingdom. Under the Grand Empire (and subsequently the United Kingdom) the word is used to reference, collectively, Mansford, Thortraia and the Javian Kingdom, although most Northern Shieldians resent the term as demeaning.

O

Oes, River: The River Oes historically divided the Kingdom of Wyclyfe from its northern neighbors of Thortraia and Weshield. The Oes, which has its headwaters at the border between Wyclyfe and Vesshampton, flows one hundred and three miles southwest and meets Troobodia Bay at Oesmouth.

Oeclyfe: Archaic name. See Wyclyfe

P

Penton, River: The River Penton is the largest in Shadoran. It flows from southern Dirwisham fifty two miles and meets Ádien Bay just west of Dûn Sâdôra. The Penton also forms the primary divide between the Duchy of Dorchet (on the east bank) and the Duchy of Evanpass (on the west bank).

Pentonbridge: Small township north of Ianapalis that straddles the River Penton. Dr. Niven of Celeborne was created the first Earl of Pentonbridge of the second creation by High King James III.

Q

R

Ramsford: Small city in Weshield and capital of the Tramd county.

S

Sâdôra: Archaic name. See Shadoran

Shadoran: Name of one of the seven kingdoms of the Grand Empire of the Shield; Shadoranite is the name for one from Shadoran. The original Sentrian province stretched from the right bank of the River Daldon to the left bank of the River Jaizar, although the Jaizarmarch was largely uninhabited until the seventeenth century. In 855, western Shadoran was split into the separate governorship of Daldonia. The Jaizarmarch was lost to the Gadsani in 1395 at the Peace of Delton. In 1697, King Ian of Shadoran unified the other six kingdoms under his personal rule. The Constitution of 1953 abolished Shadoran as an administrative unit in the United Kingdom of the Shield, although the term continues to be used popularly.

T

Thortraia: Before 1836, Thortraia was largely viewed as the weakest of the seven kingdoms. It had the third largest territory, trailing only Weshield and the Javian Kingdom, but the smallest populations as huge tracts of its territory was inhospitable mountainous regions. Nearly all the population lived in the vast southern appendage stretching from the River Mans to the River Oes and more closely identified with their southern neighbors than the ruling House of Whitman, which centered around the River Thorial. Efforts to annex the prosperous and populous Tramd region failed in 1756. However, in 1836, huge coal reserves were discovered in Traia, the province to the north of the Thorial. The Whitmans invested heavily in the exploitation of the resource, founding the Royal Mining and Manufacturing Consortium. Large population movements shifted people from Rénar and Gonar in the south to Traia. Meanwhile, several royal marriages between the House of Callahan and the Whitmans gave Thortraia a strong claim to the imperial throne, although House Whitman’s strongest efforts could not displace the High Kings of Shadoran before the collapse of the Grand Empire. Thortraia, along with the other seven kingdoms, was eliminated in the Constitution of 1953.

Tórtrâia: Archaic name. See Thortraia

Tramd: Tramd is the territory between the River Dalen and the River Mans before the meet at Ramsford. Tramd was claimed by Weshield, Mansford, and Thortraia. Mansford gave up its claims to Weshield in return for an easing of pressure in Nenton; imperial adjudicators decided that Weshield’s claims were stronger and awarded the province to the House of Laughlin in 1756. Although Mansford had implicitly agreed to the verdict by giving its claims to Weshield, the decision still caused much dissatisfaction in the northern kingdoms.

U

Upper Mansford: The capital and largest city of Mansford. Located midway between Mansmouth and Ramsford and just upstream from the Weshieldian city of Lower Mansford

V

Vesshampton: Vesshampton, unlike most of the other seven kingdoms, did not have its basis in pre-Sentrian Shieldian tribal society. The territory of Vesshampton was largely divided between the Erarde of Sâdôra and the Erarde of Oeclyfe. In order to control the power of local governors, the Sentrians created a new province (which they called ‘Daldonia’) to encompass the watershed of the River Daldon. After the victory of 1091, Daldonia managed to keep its independence despite several invasions from Oeclyfe and Sâdôra, both of whom viewed Daldonia as rightfully theirs. During the barbarian invasions of the twelfth century, the city of Vesshampton in the Daldon Mouths rose to importance as the Baron of Vesshampton’s capital. Although Shadoran later deposed its Dianatranian leaders and a native Shieldian retook the throne, Shadoran and Vesshampton remained the two kingdoms most affected by the invasions. After the Duke of Dorchet helped to arrange a royal marriage between the two kingdoms in the sixteenth century, Shadoran and Vesshampton became increasingly seen as a single unit. During the Wars of the Shield, the two countries remained close allies and Vesshampton was rewarded richly with territory it had lost to Thortraia during the barbarian invasions during the Grand Empire. After the Empire’s collapse, Vesshampton - along with the other seven kingdoms - was eliminated as an administrative unit.

W

Weshield: The largest of the seven kingdoms in terms of territory and - until the seventeenth century, when Shadoran experienced a prolonged growth spurt - the most populous, Weshield was often in a position to dictate terms to its Shieldian neighbors. Weshield originated in the Erarde of Oeseld, a rich province south and east of the River Duner. After the Battle of Dalenford in 1091, Oeseld pursued an aggressive foreign policy by means of both conquest and marriage. Oeseld annexed Editraequán in 1095 and Mansbâr in 1147 to create the new state of Mansbâr-Oeseld; Dalenshire was added after the House of Laughlin threw out the Dianatranian invaders in 1265.
In 1315, Dàmana Erar Mansbâr-Oeseld, having just won a crushing victory against Mansbâr Nor, declared himself Dàmana I Res Seldaon, the King of the Shield. With Nàmera Erar Sâdôraon as his only supporter, Dàmana waged war against the other Erarder and, by 1320, had consolidated power over a large portion of the Shield. However, fate proved fickle: Dàmana’s universal monarchy fell apart soon after his death in 1348.
In the sixteenth century, Weshield turned increasingly to its state-supported trade empire in Gallanesia, where it competed with Dénia, an Effitian vassal state on the southwestern coast of Ryansisle. Shadoran was forced to less lucrative trading grounds in Gallaga proper. However, the profits from Gallaga soon allowed Shadoran to take over the leading position on the Shield from Weshield by 1650. Weshield was expected to take a leading part in the anti-Shadoran coalition that formed in 1657; however, the arrival of the massive ship of the line Royal Standard off Raen Bay - and the implied threat to Weshield’s Gallanesian empire from Shadoran’s naval power - convinced Weshield to fall in line with Shadoran and Vesshampton. Weshield accepted Shadoranite overlordship in 1689 and joined the Grand Empire in 1697.
After the bombardment of Fort Jackson by the battleship Gurney in 1952, a revolution in Weshield succeeded in breaking it off from the Grand Empire as that state collapsed and - blaming the House of Laughlin for the trouble - formed the Republic of Weshield. The Republic quickly alienated itself from its neighbors, especially after invading and annexing Mansford. After the Republic attacked the United Kingdom’s forces in Thortraia, it was invaded and dismantled by Charles Bradsworth’s government in Ianapalis. As with all of the original seven kingdoms of the Shield, Weshield no longer has any official standing in the United Kingdom.
Shadoranites and other East Shieldians tend to stereotype Weshieldians as bumbling and stupid, if generally harmless. There is a good deal of resentment of Shadoranite practices in Weshield, although no definite sense of nationalism has ever formed.

Westergate: Historically, the western gate of Dûn Sâdôra. Currently, Westergate is a small community on the outskirts of western Ianapalis; its neighbor community, Eastergate, has been almost completely swallowed by the metropolis' expansion. Westergate is most famous for the Westergate Footballing Grounds, former home of the Iansisle national football team. The Clayburghs, who carry the title Marquess of Westergate, are a famous seafaring family. The current Marquess of Westergate is also the Lord Commander Home Fleet.

NOTES:

The term "Flag" in parenthesis after a ship's name indicates that it is a squadron flagship. Similarly, the term "Fleet Flag" indicates a fleet flagship. The term "Pennant" indicates that the squadron is commanded either by a commodore or by an acting commodore and that is the ship from which he flies his pennant.

The First through Fourth Destroyer Flotillas and the First Light Cruiser Squadron are not considered to be capable of sailing with the modern battle fleet. Their ships are most often used to augment convoy protection or on detached duties, including showing the flag.

Light craft, such as torpedo boats, minelayers/sweepers, and sloops, as well as support vessels, such colliers and supply ships, are not shown in this chart.

26 May 1954 is the current date in Iansisle as of 7:46 MST on 23 March 2005.

EDIT 13 July: added post-Revolutionary names of major units. Will update deployments soon.

Good to see Iansisle still rolling along. And to see that Salvador's still out there :)

I still like the destroyer names, by and large, and Huggermugger especially. Not sure about the Discharge, though!
Must try not to steal too many of them for the few dozen hulls the Soviet People's Navy is yet to name.

I don't know if it's a problem, but I think that you've got two HIMS Palaus in the Second Heavy Cruiser Squadron.

Steal away as many names as you like; God knows I'm probably stealing them from someone else. But only so long as you keep that darn mind out of the gutter, mister! :p

*changes* THERE WAS NEVER TWO PALAUS! THAT IS A DIRTY COMMUNIST LIE!

Seriously, thanks for pointing that out. I also noticed two HIMS Burma while I was fixing that problem. If anyone notices other duplications, please let me know!

Oh, please, the only lie is in your misquote as accuses me of making a plural form look like a possessive! ...and possibly in the way that your wizard '50s science gives the impression that I edited my original post, just now!

Shutting you are to be up!

Hey, back in the day I had a fair amount of bigships. All of Two battleships! Nelson-class to boot! And some cruisers too!

I think its that the ASM gave my navy quite a scare and since the 1960s the number of capital ships has plummeted. Nowadays, though, you best watch out. The number of hulls in service is increasing from 'something over in that there pile' to 'hey, this almost looks like a destroyer or something.'
Iansisle
26-03-2005, 08:39
Nelsons? That's an interesting choice, LRR, but you always have been an interesting person ;). I have heard some modern research, however, which alleges that Rodney was far more crucial in the final battle with Bismarck and that KGV tends to get the credit just for being the fleet flagship.

On a more relevant note, please never worry about spamming in my thread. I'm pleased just to know that anyone takes notice of my humble work and couldn't be happier to answer questions, have debates, or even watch people just ramble tangentally. :)

Speaking of which, I'm delaying in the early 50s longer than I had originally intended because I've been doing a lot of reading on Jutland lately and just waiting for my chance to have one last glorious hurrah of a fleet battle before launching myself headlong into the age of the guided missile. Don't suppose either of you modern wankers could help me with that, though! :p

By some coincidence, I'm presently typing-up something about Salvador. I'm sure you'll be pleased to know that the Beddgelen universe is moving its location, again, heh. How do you feel about sheet ice? ;)
...I'm, uh, rather stupidly planning to play two BGs, one in AMW and one in the big scary outside world where we've got four-some billion people and can push others around and learn to appreciate out little corner of AMW India all the more. So I'm trying to re-invent history over night, which probably explains why I'm here, now, in this thread, rambling.

If you think of a way for us modern wankers to see you off from the big-gun age, give me a prod and put the kettle on :)

...it occurs to me that 'new' BG is going to be less well established and with a history of poor management *almost* worthy of a x-thousand seat parliament. Perhaps some rusty hulks could yet cause some trouble.

Well, my two Nelsons might rapidly become one, perhaps even none, if things go how they look like they will go in an anti-facist intervention in Kampfersein. I've already had my submarines gunned down by torpedo boats, my troop transports destroyed, a good third of my Crown Colony cruisers sunk, and 2000 Type XXI subs on my tail. I don't know what this guy is, but he's certainly destroying my navy quite handily. I think my choice to claim all of four Tribal-class destroyers as my capital ship fleet in the 1950s might turn out more appropriate than I intended it to.

As for guided missiles, you might be surprised (although I don't really follow your RP progress much) that the battleship has experienced something of a comeback in NS of late. My hordes of missile boats, AIP submarines, fighter-bombers, and land-based ASM launchers are suddenly outclassed by trimiran hull, railgun armed, half-carrier monsters that everybody seems to have these days. I throw like 200 RBS-15s against Bonstock's battleship and the godforsaken thing still limps back to port! I don't know what I'm gonna do. Guided missiles have by and large become a support weapon for gun-armed battleships, to be used on targets unfit for the big guns, although the wide use of railguns means that ships can hit targets beyond ASM range with shells apparently.

So you might want to skip the ASM age entirely and go straight into the era of monster battleships.

Spew. There's nothing I hate more than those 'super-battleships' - it's utter bull. I've vowed never to make a ship more than 60,000 tons empty, and I intend to stand by that! ;) I'm more of a 'classic' battleship player.

Sorry to hear about your navy, too. Good luck on the ground portion of the war, anyway!

BG: I've heard a lot of really good things about AMW. Are they all that they're cracked up to be? I've been in a bit of a rut lately and have been wanting to try out a puppet of something new - like a Latin American military dictatorship or a Soviet breakaway state. Are they looking for any new members?

I'd be glad to have you. If you wanted to try out Pakistan, that'd be right up my alley. Or perhaps Afghanistan?

I don't put much stock in superbattleships myself, but they're there and I only hope I can blow one up if the time ever comes to do so. Perhaps I should establish some shore gunbatteries just in case.
Beth Gellert

Well, AMW has its problems, like more or less any sizeable group of independent RPers are bound to, I suppose, but it also has a core of good RPers and interesting nations. Some have issues with Sino, but we generally try to channel that into rampant IC hate and fear :)
It could do with tidying up a bit in some respects, I'll give Dra-pol a prod.
If you're inclined to poke around, these would be the threads, I think:
AMW membership rosta: http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=376859&page=1&pp=15
AMW events catalogue: http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=377971
As I say, they're a bit thick with cobwebs in parts, but, eh, we're all lazy :)

As to super battleships... well, I'm relieved to hear that. BG has trimaran carriers, but they have a smaller aircraft capacity than a Nimitz and presently their catapults don't even work properly, so they're uber nothing, and the closest thing we have to a battleship is the Gull Flag Class (the name of which makes no sense in AMW's universe, but stuff that!) that weighs all of fifteen thousand tons.

[Leaves, making no mention of five thousand ton wing-in-ground-effect vehicles]

Historic Maps of Tilsitia

Sentrian Empire -- circa AD 1000

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/DrIquan/mapone.jpg
The Sentrian Empire is at its largest extent, covering the homeland in Sentry Island, all of Tharia, Troobodia and the Shield and parts of Noropia and Dianatran. The Sentrians are unable, however, to penetrate deep into Dianatran or to completely eliminate the Noropian Duchy of Benton. Effit is beginning to emerge as the dominant force amongst the Steppe peoples of central Tilsitia. In the south, Heald culture starts to emerge as a distinctive unifying force in the highlands along the banks of the Diratedly River. To the south-east, a rough balance of power exists between shifting alliances of Denian city-states and the Rynian Empire.

Shieldian Independence -- circa AD 1300

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/DrIquan/two.jpg
The rebellion of the Prince of Mansbar fractures Sentrian power in the north, shattering the Shield into a myriad of different states known as Erarde. Meanwhile, a federation of Noropian duchies, recently freed from Sentrian control, forms. The Jaizar Republic is briefly brought into the wider culture of Troobodia Bay by a massive population boom in Dianatran that results in expansion both north and west into Sentrian territory. Unlabeled by accident on this map, Effit goes through the first of three major territorian expansions, consolidating power over the Jaizar Forks.

Grand Empire -- circa AD 1700

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/DrIquan/three.jpg
Under King Ian of Shadoran, the warring Shieldian kingdoms are united into a Grand Empire. Despite resistance in the west from Gadsan and the vast, nearly impenetrable desert of eastern Dianatran, Effit continues to expand to the east and south, for the first time encroaching upon Healdian and Rynian territory. Although Rynia continues to expand, Denian cities are allowed a vast measure of independence along the coast from Tharia to Heald because of the looming Effitian threat. A coalition of Denian states does, however, fight and lose a naval and colonial war against the Grand Empire for power in Gallaga.

Two Empires -- circa AD 1800

The map of Tilsitia is greatly simplified as the Grand Empire of the Shield and the Effitian Patria overrun all other states but a few Sentrian holdouts in Tharia and several of the more powerful Denian cities. The two-tiered power structure is not conducive to stable international relations and the powers fight a series of violent wars.

The Iansislean Peace. For nearly one hundred years after a decisive defeat of Effit, Iansisle dominates the Tilsitian continent by employing a balance of power system. Two new states, the Empire of the Golden Quarry (combining Denia and Rynia) and Healdsburgh, are carved out of loosely-controlled Effitian territory in the south to provide a counterbalance of the two larger states. Also, Insula Modesta (in the far east) passes into Iansislean hands as a guarantee against future Effitian aggression.

Gull Flag Revolution -- circa AD 1960

The Grand Empire is shattered by a revolution, splintering the Shield into a number of breakaway states. Eventually, the most powerful of these consolidate their power and, under the direction of President Ranalte of the Gull Flag Republic, join together into the Iansislean Federation. Only little Wyclyfe, a Beddgelen protectorate, remains outside the influence of the Gull Flag Republic in the Troobodian basin.
