Polyphemus-Class Carrier

http://www.boingdragon.com/gallery/images/carrier.jpg

The Polyphemus-Class Carrier is one of the largest and most powerful designs ever developed for a spacefaring vessel. Equipped with multiple railguns, missiles, and beam cannons, it can prove to be formidable in combat, however its main role is to transport multiple Starfighters to the battlefield, at a moments notice.

Size:
Length: 1,200 Meters
Width: 1,100 Meters
Heigth: 625 Meters

Complement:
1 Captain
110 Officers
6,500 Crewman

Armament:
1 Yamato Cannon (Main bridge weapon)
6x railguns (3 port and 3 starboard)
16x Beam Cannons (Equivalent of modern batteship guns, 12 Forward, 4 aft.)
8x Mjonlir Rocket Launchers, (15 Missile spread per salvo.)

Spacecraft:
Can carry up to 230 spacecraft, will depend on dimensions.

Propulsion:
2x Ion/anti-Ion Power Generators
1 Micro-Singularity Rift Generator

Speed:
Can travel up too 35% the speed of light in sub-light mode, for traveling large distances however, a Micro-Singularity generator creates rifts, that bend space and time to make a wormhole to safley pass into the desired location.

That's kinda of a small crew for such a big ship...

Whoa! No godmode accusations yet! **Looks around nervously for Wazzu**

Ok more crew coming up.....

Hmm, yeah it is I guess. What would be better dimensions?

My largest vessel is only 750 meters long... So around 1 kilometer...

ok are the new dimensions better?

Seems cool. :)

I've specced out carriers that were 800m long in different forums, but that was just a big box with engines.

YEah, the overall specs are kinda big but thats the Idea

As for the engines thats mainly what the dorsals are, the rest is fighter bays, and rooms for the crew

The crew requirements aren't too small, nor is the hull too big, in this revised incarnation of the design.

About a kilometer is good for a large space capital ship - go much smaller than that and you're into escort territory and you won't be able to fit on everything a ship would need to operate for long periods in space, go much bigger and you've got an inefficient flying target.

As for the crew, it's reasonable to assume that at higher tech levels there would be a greater degree of automation in terms of the operation of ships' systems. The crew complement stated is comparable to that of a modern aircraft carrier, and that number of crew would have no problem operating a larger vessel at a higher level of technology.

Armament seems low, but that's cool (and a refreshing change from ships with 34859872349028935429308 antimatter cannons or whatever); by the stats it seems the vast bulk of its interior space has been dedicated to carrying and servicing fighters and small craft.

All in all, this is one of the more reasonable spaceship designs I've seen.

Some advice: state how much it's costing you to build (since it's the first of its class and quite large it'd probably be well over half a trillion dollars) and how many you're building (Menelmacar has about twenty ships that big, but we've been building them for a while, so perhaps two or three of these at first would be most reasonable - and don't forget the need for an escort group).

Also, lose the insta-warp. The wormhole idea is good in terms of scientific feasibility, but for RP balance purposes you should still give it a speed, perhaps in terms of a multiple of the speed of light. A recharge time on the rift generator would be another good means of achieving balance.

OOC:

Well, this would be a fine design if it were not the fact that you already are in possession of an obscene number of massive battlecruisers.

I like your stats, like Siri said, but you need to drop some of you obscene numbers of Helios BC's to get me to accept a lack of cardboard in the designs.

Nice ship, though.
