Porno. And only porno. By the bushelfull.
Reading porno...honestly...who does that? Pornos are like adult picture books.
Whatever's available. Ruschi does not have as large an assortment of different titles as, say, the USA, where you can find books on just about any subject, but it's getting there. The government likes to have a say over some of the more intrusive material that tries to get through publishing. However, that's not to say books detailing the military, such as aircraft and such, aren't available.
Harry Potter titles are distributed at half their normal price in school libraries, too, in an effort to get the younger population reading more. Hey, it works.
Porno. And only porno. By the bushelfull.

Hahah.
Well, I don't know what type of literature is popular in Oglethorpia; but let me eliminate some popular choices for you.
History -- no. Oglethorpia's been involved in only two conflicts -- both lasting less than a week. So Oglethorpian history is boring.
Wait, that's the only one I can eliminate.
Oh well.
Reading porno...honestly...who does that? Pornos are like adult picture books.
In our country, there are no pictures in porno mags...only stories of Barakas getting it on with multiple chicks and/or mothers.

Required reading is Machievelli, Hobbes, SAS Survival Manual, USSOCOM field book, and Propaganda. Other than that, we don't care.
I dont have a full top 10 available at the moment, but the fiction catagory is mostly dominated by Manga, which is probably Buri's major import. Trigun, Gravitation, Excel Saga, and various Guilty Gear anthologys and Doujinshi (yes, we actually import and release fan comics. ^_^) are pretty popular right now. As for novels, Harry potter and the Ootp is selling quite well, as is the dark tower, and Ring series.

The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde is a story about corruption. Specifically, the main character is corrupted in his pursuit of art and beauty. He pledges his "soul" for eternal youth, immortality as it were. He starts to detach himself from life, becoming, as he refers it, as a "spectator to life". He tries to detach himself from all human feelings in the pursuit of unthinking beauty, and ends up devastating others around him. An examle..the lady he loved, whom he was to marry..when she fails to act in a play according to how he wished, he leaves her. She ends up comitting suicide later as he becomes so depraved he sees her deth as "rather like a Greek tragedy. Just as she never really 'lived' as an actor she never really died."
The picture part refers to the picture, which twists and warps as his morals twist and warp, he stays eternally young as the picture serves as a chilling reminder of how far he sinks. In the end, to cut himself away from all guilt, he cuts the picture to ribbons, which kills him.
What are books? maybe we should have our scribes look into this "reading" thing.
um...what do your scribes do, then?
we read lots of vonnegut, sartre, lavey, and similar and such
music's our main art, though. literature takes a back seat, and movies are almost non-existant.

ISAN's population frequently ranks amongst the world's most stupid, and its education system one of the worst in India, as a result very little reading is done.
Fanatics do most of the reading. Muslim fanatics reading God knows what since President Brown cleverly incited Jihad in support of his rather imperialist aims in oil-rich Dunyabi. Christian fanatics getting paranoid and reading the Bible as a counter-weight. The Hindu minority feeling pretty ****ed off and doing their damndest to afford a book and/or eduation so as not to be culturally erased. Then there's the FBCo.plc board and shareholders reading the Financial Post, and anything else the President 'hints' that they ought to.
The nation's stupidity is the result of deliberate government policies, yes.
