End of a Cold War? [intnal. polit.- internat.comments welc.]

Today, October 27th 2032, the heads of state of the People's Democratic Social Republic of Ariddia, the Free Land of West Ariddia and the Democratic Social City of North-West Ariddia made a common announcement formally ending the state of tension between the three countries.

It was the first ever gathering of the three governments, in an effort to end the long-enduring Cold War that has poisoned relations for well over two decades.

"The People's Democratic Social Republic of Ariddia," the Prime Secretary solemnly announced, "officially recognises the sovereignty of West Ariddia, with all the rights therein, and furthermore recognises the West Ariddian government stems from the legitimate aspirations of a majority of West Ariddian people."

In return, West Ariddia has formally recognised North-West Ariddia. The governments have decided to emphasise that, although the Ariddian Isles are split into three states, they remain at heart one nation. With this in mind, a Council for the Reunification of an Ariddian Federation (CRAF) has been established. Its aims are as follows:

* an Ariddian Federation comprising three sovereign States

* Federal Ministers for Foreign Affairs, Culture, Sports and Defence

* an Ariddian Federal Army, and the removal of the DMZ between West Ariddia and North West Ariddia

* freedom of movement between the three States

* the respect of each State's socio-economic policies

* the recognition of West Ariddia's monetary independence

* the gradual merging of NWA back into Ariddia, on the basis of the will of the North-West Ariddian people, and the immediate name change of NWA into the Special Administrative Province of North-West Ariddia

* the adopting of an Ariddian Federal flag, comprising three vertical stripes, dark blue, light blue and dark blue, the left stripe being speckled with twenty green dots representing the twenty Ariddian Isles

* the election of a Federal Head of State with representative functions only

It is thought this will not entirely end tensions, as the two communist states still feel greatly concerned about West Ariddia's great social inequality and lack of true environmental policies. However, it is a step forward.

As a gesture, the Ariddian Isles will submit a united team for the tenth issue of the football World Cup.

Internationally, this means other nations may recognise all three Ariddian States without causing diplomatic incidents.
