Late today the Senate passed Resolution S-Aelius 1472, a piece of legislation that is expected to severely limit the abilities of communist parties to recruit, expand, and survive.
While specifically targetted at Communism, Resolution S-Aelius 1472 also has implications for other ultra-radical ideologies such as collectivism and parties such as the Earth Liberation Front. Spefically the resolution targets the abilities to recruit new members into any party deemed ultra-radical or any party that seems to work against the state.
Senator Aelius, the author of the resolution, said today, "It works like this; the Empire will keep tabs on all registered parties and groups that fall under 1472. We will observe them, collect information, and work towards preventing their expansion. We will do so by levying huge taxes on each new member that joins - taxes to be paid by both the party and the new member...
"While there are a large number of potential loop-holes in this resolution, we [the Senate] are confident that we have plugged most of those holes...for example, a party could merely change its name from 'communist' to 'monkey', but we have a set criteria for what actually determines a parties affiliation. Changing the name won't do any good.
"Moreover, we have set limits to the size that any one party communist or ultra-radical party can be, twenty five I might add. In this way we hope to fragment the larger parties and thus prevent them from ever being able to mount some kind of foolish revolution, prole or no.
"But what is probably the best feature of the bill is the fact that any member of a communist or ultra-radical party is prevented from communicating with other registered communists or ultra-radicals in other groups. Punitive actions will be taken if such-and-such member violates this provision - harsh punitive actions I might add.
"In short, we're going to eradicate this group of revolutionaries and vagabonds. I'd also like to add that our new Imperator Cominus has also pressed for legislation that criminalize the teaching of communist ideals in public and private schools, but would reward schools that teach of the power of capitalism and non-radical parties. All we need now is a sponsor and word has it that my good fellow from the Ravena District [Mr. Crucius] intends to sponsor this new legislation."
Critics are already attacking this bill as limiting the freedoms granted years ago in the days of the Republic. However, Senator Aelius was quick to point out that, and I quote "Actions may be taken to ensure and safeguard the Republic at all costs." to which he also added "But that old clause doesn't really matter any more because this isn't the Republic, now is it?"[i]
