OLD TIME HOCKEY! Sign-ups for Don Cherry Cup 2 (full)

It's been a rock-em, sock-em derby on ice at the first Don Cherry Cup.

Enough to know we need a second. Sign up here. And if you're interested in being the next host, say so here too.

The Sherbrooke Annihilators, the pride of Quebec Nouveau's two hockey teams, would like to announce their registration for le second Don Cherry Cup

25-10-2003, 21:08
The Moose will return, hoping to improve on their lackluster performance in the first cup.

(OOC: Dice hate me. Anything I do involving dice always ends up as a loss. You should see me play Risk. I'm lucky if I win 5 battles all game)

Still largely ignorant of even the basic elements of the sport, Norbray locals have been discouraged, by the government, from showing-up the nation by taking part in international competition.

Winston Gumble of Norbray replied, however; "Ice, stick, thing, you ponces!" confidently indicating with a low wave of his hand that was meant to somehow represent the rock pelted about a frozen lake every weekend.

Formerly the Walmington Red Bears, the renamed Norbray Red Bears would like to submit a team for humiliation next time around!

"Maybe we'll score against the Cassowaries, or that other looser team, you know the one." Offered a bruised Gumble.

(ooc:The players may be clueless fools likely to bring the game into disrepute, but the fans at least ought to be civilised)

The Ianapalis Gulls would, of course, love to participate again.

"I can smell that Cup this year," nodded Martin St. Amour, brimming with confidence, in an interview with IanCorp wire services.

i will send a team for the Don Cherry cup 2
26-10-2003, 19:07
our team is the Uniginian Rockets
27-10-2003, 00:25
The RNoSI Hippos are definitely in!

BTW, format suggestion for next time. I saw that the first is based on points in Group A. This time, the top 2 teams in Group A (or however we determine it) should play for the title so that there's actually a championship game.

16 teams entered so far. Still looking for a host.

We could keep using dice, or change toa system that takes rank from previous Cup into account, like they do in the NS soccer World Cup. Anyone have a preference?

I think I'm sort of in favour of taking previous results into account, but since WoS wasn't involved in the first cup I'd expect someone else's opinion to be of more significance on that matter..

..WoS would volunteer to be host, but we haven't any proper statiums, heh. All matches would be played outdoors on a frozen lake in northern Norbray, next to the military testing fields ;)

31-10-2003, 17:29
I'd love to see a formula taking rank into account. Maybe something based on the football/soccer World Cup but allowing for higher scores.
31-10-2003, 22:11
What about what the NHL does? 2 points for a win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for a loss? Have the teams put into Divisions, and the top teams from each division pair off in the finals? Maybe this is how it was done, I just thought I'd input here.

The scores-by-ranking situation sounds like the best idea, to me at least. Also, I'd love to host, but I OOCly don't have as much time to devote to NS as I'd like right now. Sorry.

I have the funds and the facilities and would love to host the Cup. After our dissapointment in the last cup, we are eager to have home ice advantage. Not that anything we tried to do was very successful last time. The Capitol of Quinntonia is The City of Peace. It is huge about 30 million people and is designed to look much like a church. It gives tourists a sense of peace and contemplation withits huge cathedrals, parks, statues, Christian based sculptures and hockey rinks evry couple of blocks. Will this affect my stats?

Greetings. We would like to apply for a place in the Cherry Cup, if there are any spots remaining. Uruk'Hai Ice Dancing is becoming increasingly popular in our nation. And when it comes down it, it's very much like hockey. (This is not meant as a swipe at ice hockey. If you had seen the Uruk'Hai icedancing troupe in action, you'd know where I'm coming from.)If our application is approved, we will be sending a national team managed by our national football ("soccer" in North America) manager, Ufwurz the Furious. Kaze Progressa (rank 8 )
Athel Nora
Tanah Burung (rank 11)
Tranquillitis (rank 10)

(spaces still open)

Potential hosts:
Walmington on Sea
Quinntonia
(Please express any preference)

Proposed scoring system:
Random number generation using rank modifiers, based on the football (soccer) World Cup.
- Each team gets 12 chances to score, each attack generating a random number between 1 and 100.
- The attack number is compared with the defence number of the other team. If the attack number is higher than the defence number, a goal is scored. If not, no goal.
- The defence number is determined by rank (teams are ranked 1-12 depending on their finish in the last Cherry Cup, and new teams are also ranked 12). To calculate defence number, subtract rank from 90. That means the highest-ranked team, SterlingIce, has a defensive number of 89, and new teams ranked 12 have a defensive number of 78.

Generating ten random results for SterlingIce v (new team) gives these results:
SterlingIce 4 new team 0
SterlingIce 0 new team 0
SterlingIce 2 new team 5
SterlingIce 5 new team 4
SterlingIce 4 new team 2
SterlingIce 3 new team 0
SterlingIce 3 new team 0
SterlingIce 2 new team 2
SterlingIce 4 new team 1
SterlingIce 1 new team 3

So the best team gets a record of 6 wins, 2 ties and 2 losses against new entries. This (and the scores) sounds about right to me, but comments are welcome.

General Aglukark also promises to never refer to the "soccer World Cup" again. Please don't invade us! We had enough trouble when Ziotah invaded. (Ziotah? Boo, hiss!)

There have been several suggestions for a format change to a more league-style play, and no one appears able to host right this minute. So, i'm going to suggest a change:

Results still generated witha rank modifier.

A Nationstates Hockey League (NHL) will be formed to play for the Cherry Cup. Teams will be divided into divisions that play each other a few times, and the top teams (say two each from four divisions) will qualify for the playoffs: elimination games leading to the Cherry Cup final.

K.N. can host the next time, and then hand off to someone else for Cherry Cup 3.

Any comments?
