Petition for a Nationstates Archive. Save our lost threads!
imported_Kalessin

]I do have backups. I'm not sure exactly how to extract particular threads from them, but I can investigate. The forums are periodically purged of threads that aren't replied to for 60+ days (and aren't stickies) and have been pretty much since NationStates has been running... this wasn't a recent snap decision or anything. The mods do know about this. I suggested we could create an "Archive" forum for threads that should never be purged, but people seemed to feel that important threads could be periodically bumped or replied to, so that's how it works at the moment. But the offer remains: we can establish that Archive forum if enough people support the idea. (You can start a petition or something if you like.)
Post here to show your support for an archive.

Of course (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=83243&highlight=) I support (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=83519&highlight=) some sort of archive (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=84025&highlight=) or something. Please, please, please - and if at all possible, please bring back all that from the recent purge so we can go through it. I'll warrant you'd get a lot of help just by the players bumping the pertinent threads to the top of the archive to assist filtering out - hell, I volunteer to do just that if you want. And no, I wouldn't play favorites. Anything that had generated a lot of intererest or had an ongoing storyline I'd be in favor of pushing up there. Would get rid of all the filler.
Anyways, yes. Sorry for my lack of eloquence this morning. M'tired. *grins*

Very much twenty-firsted - old NS and to some extent II threads are the back-continuity of the forums.
Santa Barbara
23-10-2003, 16:39
Yes, definitely.
As for saving things on our hard drives, that would be all well and good if we were given a little warning first, like "oh by the way, unless you want to lose old threads into the Void for all eternity, you might want to save them onto your hard drive right about now." Otherwise its not really feasible, we'd just have to save *everything* to the hard drive on the paranoid suspicion that it'd be deleted.
I suppose. I usually save threads that I think are critical (and usually the ones I've participated in :) ) on my hard drive. But the thing is, who gets to determine which threads go into an archive? There is only so much room. I know spam threads can be left out but storyline threads? Save them all? A warning might be nice I guess. But if it's an automatic purge then I guess a mod or admin would have to manually say "Okay, threads X,Y, and Z will be gone tomorrow." Bit of a hassle on their part.
I am in support of an archive.

I agree with this wholeheartedly.
As for what could be moved to an archive, , how about simply any thread that contains serious NS-related (sorry, the RPing in General just doesn't count) roleplaying? There are some threads people want to keep (like I would just about have a heart attack if I lost the "Echoes of Lives Lost" thread- s'got important backstory stuff for my nation), and some that are... eh... not so important (such as the infamous n00b-mocking "MY STEEL PENISES WILL PROTECT ME!")

My support. Definitely. I've seen far too many awesome threads pass by me in the six months I've been here, and seeing them archived would be awesome. It feels like a terrible waste, to see all those great RPs, from before my time, from my time, and anything else really good from anytime that would be purged periodically. An archive seems like the ideal thing for it. You have my full support, everyone who's already posted.

Another good thing about Archives is that you can probably start purging every 30 days, which would cut down on some space.... but the important thing is that some threads should REALLY be saved for posterity. The one that comes to mind first are the World Cup threads :P
So yes, full support :)
And would it help if I gave you the numbers of the threads that were baleeted and we want back?
EDIT: 13075, 22803, 25108, 30178, 30187, 30547, 33416, 35169, 41735, 42835, 43675, 47763. Thats all the main World Cup threads, minus possibly one exception that I don't have and will prolly never be found....

Well, I don't actually have a problem with the purge - BUT! (don't leap on me and rip me to shreds just yet... ;)) I can see the problem that other people have with it. And, being me, I most definitely therefore support the archive. No, it didn't take me a long time to say one thing, because I'm actually saying two. So there.
Also, I'd be willing to help out with a bump 'n' archive type filtering thang, if required. More than willing. Hell, I don't have anything else to do around here. ;)

Uh? Oh. As a rule of thumb, everything from the NS, UN and II forums and nothing from General. There may be exceptions in both cases, but as a general rule I think it works. I am not sure about Moderation, Technical or the other forums, though.
Think that we are talking about an archive for "dead" threads, not a "historic" forum. The idea is accessing the info there, not adding posts. How will we access the threads? How will they be sorted? SQL database and search engine?

I support this. The Purge wasn't so bad, but with my pack-rat personality coupled with paranoia, I've saved many of my threads as PDFs. But I understand that not many people are like this. Plus, an archive forum would be nice, for a "Find By Content" sort of thing.
