US Military Strength
Does anyone know approximately what the percentage of the US' population is enrolled in the Armed Forces? Or, if you can find them, an approximate number? Thanks!

Half of a percent.
For reference...
[code:1:a006103d5e]
0.5 = 50%
0.05 = 5%
0.005 = 0.5%
[/code:1:a006103d5e]
So, [your-population-here] x 0.005 = a realistic military number.
Don't listen to anyone who takes a 5-10% military. Those are wartime numbers (In WWII America had 6% of it's men in the military) and to use them for peacetimes is asinine.
In the '60es I think the USA still got 1%...
EDIT: I personally use 0.35%. Works fine for me.
Half of a percent.

0.5 = 50%
0.05 = 5%

But does this qualify as wartime, since we're technically occupying a country?
Half of a percent.

They might not have been asking for RP purposes.
You could say this is a cold war situation, since there's war ranging on every day.

Quite so. ^^
Let me clarify. I'm asking what the total population of men and women enrolled in the United States Armed Forces is at this time, or an equivilant percentage. I'm not speaking in RP terms, I'm writing a paper on US foreign policy and I haven't been able to find anything.

OOC: Then you may as well ask in the General forum :wink:

I used to have a really good website for this kind of stuff, I'll look for it again (it moved). However you may find this website useful for the meanwhile
http://www.csis.org/burke/mb/WestMB012302.pdf
Bear in mind that is a big file and will take some time to download. It deals with post cold war demilitarisation across Europe. Anyway, asking NS people is never a good idea, as a rule of thumb they don't know but will gladly claim "the US is fielding 100,000 M1A2 tanks... whats an M1A1?"

Thanks! I appreciate it.

No worries.
Oh yeah...the US is included in that file as well...forgot to mention it :P What I meant was that it didn't deal with the Eastern theatre of the cold war.
:D You, my friend, have done a very great deal to help my paper. Thank you. XD

Acording to the 2001 World Census, the USA has:
Army: 495,000
Navy: 388,760
Air Force: 390,000
Marines: 174,000
Total: 1,447,760
But that was the 2001 World Census...

star trek episode, an old one, that was their signature line I suppose.
OOC: Why, they are the Pakleds, the cunning aliens who appeared to be retarded but tricked the Enterprise crew.

I have compulsory Military Service so I use 2% but less than 1% is actual field personnel - and I very rarely use that at all.
The US does not maintain a tremendous active army, has most of its manpower lies in the reserves. The relatively small professional force often causes inconsistencies in the information.
