More than half of the players on the Lions' WC8 squad have retired, and new coach Gene Barber will have to make a second attempt at the World Cup using mostly new players.
While Coach Parker preferred the 4-4-2 formation for his team, Barber has decided to go with a 4-3-3 instead.

* indicates, that the team is a amateur team.
Team Captain is midfielder Exke Sines and fallback captain Laxtu Takil.
One of the big surprises are the two amateurs from the current domestic champion Karela Lines. Other supises are the very low age of many players and the domination of mintanian players and clubs. 7 players normally play in KaMaRian clubs, 4 in Hetkalian clubs, 5 in small mintanian cities, which are only known for their first league teams and only Vel Kansu is a Ligatanian. Syku Hexen says about this: "It is a league-thing. Show me good ligatanian soccer, show me ANY first-league ligatanian soccer!" The Reja-FA server was flooded after this remark with eMails of angy Ihiri Sekhika fans. Hexen said to this: "Look at the league-table. 15th place is Ihiri, they are out-of-compare!"

Starting 11:
Goalkeeper:
1-Oog (Prehistoric F.C.)
One of our most dependable players in the squad. Has incredible reach, has the ability to cover any inch of the goal in one dive. Rarely lets in any goals. Suffers from the occasional lapse of concentration.
Defenders:
2-Aargh (Prehistoric F.C.)
A solid right back who tackles with no fear. Has a danger of getting fouled.
3-Humm (Prehistoric F.C.)
A very solid centre back who will not let anybody past him without a good challenge. Another player who has a danger of getting fouled.
4-Quk (Rentruk Rovers)
A good clearer of the ball who makes runs up the field occasionally. His tackles are not as hard as Humm's or Aargh's, but he has the ability to clear the ball very quickly to the forwards.
5-Thunk (Earl United)
A solid left back with a fierce tackle. Plays the passing game well with Krak and Gung.
Midfielders:
7-Kerrnigit (Marauding F.C.)
A quality right winger who can cross with accuracy, dribble with tight control over the ball, and shoot with a deadly curl. Our default free kick taker.
6-Poom (Marauding F.C.)
A centre midfielder with a good eye for passes. His ball control, although not as good as Kerrnigit, can still thread him past defenders. He also has an accurate shot, but it occasionally lacks power.
8-Krak (Earl United)
A centre midfielder with a good pass. Has great interplay with Gung and Thunk.
9-Gung (Earl United)
A left midfielder who makes the occasional run forward. Exhibits great passing with Krak and Thunk. His shots occasionally lack power.
Forwards:
10-Urk (Marauding F.C.) - Captain
Without doubt our best striker in the team. Has brilliant ball control and a devastating shot. However, his best weapon is his versatility. Can beat the keeper from way out, produce a breathtaking curler around the keeper, or simply dribble into the box and lob the ball over the keeper. Occasionally plagued with injury problems.
11-Phoot (Prehistoric F.C.)
A striker with good ball control and no fear of defenders. Has the ability to dribble the length of the field without losing the ball. Can also finish headers well. However, his shots occasionally lack accuracy and power.
Subs:
12-Zonk (Marauding F.C.) - Forward
A striker who has yet to prove himself. Has passion for the sport, but slightly lacking in ability. Has decent ball control, but his shots lack accuracy and power.
13-Narf (Bill United) - Midfielder
A stable midfielder. Has good passing abilities. However, slightly lacking in fitness.
14-Throck (Prehistoric F.C.) - Defender
A stable defender. Usually subbed on when a more defensive style of play is called for. Has a good tackle and a good clearance.
15-Ppakkaddumm (Wurtherington Wanderers) - Midfielder/Forward
An attack minded midfielder who can also play upfront. Has a decent shot. However, slightly lacking in ball control.
16-Machterstrassefurtermorgannachttunggutsprechenbuchlungweighetvolkshvargenshtickshnoff (Dankeschoen F.C.) - Midfielder
A midfielder with a long name. Known to be able to inject flair into a game. Fairly comfortable over the ball. However, his passes lack accuracy and his shots are weak and inaccurate. Also lacking in fitness.
Reserves:
17-Furtermachtermorgstrasluwecragnavonchelsenntungkshvaghugtihetesprishtengckshnoff (Dankeschoen F.C.) - Forward
Machterstrassefurtermorgannachttunggutsprechenbuchlungweighetvolkshvargenshtickshnoff's compatriate in Dankeschoen F.C.. Has blistering pace and an accurate shot. However, he is low on fitness and ball control, his shots lack power, and he has a dreadful first touch of the ball.
18-Faard (Westinghouse-Armature F.C.) - Defender
Has good fitness, quick pace, strong in the air, and tackles hard. However, has poor control over the ball and a horrible shot. Most importantly, his passes are usually errant, which may provide chances for the opponents.
19-Shtaan (Simoleons United) - Forward
A striker with a wicked shot. Despite its speed and power, his shots are very inaccurate, and he usually ends his season with only about 10% of his shots on target. Has good ball control and passing, but lacks stamina and pace.
20-Plaat (Marauding F.C.) - Goalkeeper
Widely seen as the successor to Oog. Is very alert and anticipates rather well. However, he is rather small and his reach is limited. Prone to committing the occassional slip-up.
21-Xcavabar (Atlantis F.C.) - Forward
Plying his trade in Europa Brittania, this forward is strong testament to the strength of Giant Zucchini. An all out charging type striker, has brilliant speed as well as a great position and finishing sense. However, may be slightly lacking in experience and fitness. His long range shots also lack power.
22-Zurk (Wonkerman Wanderers) - Defender
Lately deported back from TnUI, this defender combines defensive grit with attacking flair. A young talent who shows great promise.

Tanah Burung
20-10-2003, 15:09
The Crocodiles are thrilled to announce the return of the legendary Bi Kikere, who took Gilmeecia from a group of sub-idiot humanoids barely able to run, to a world power in football. The miracle-working coach has spent the past two years scouring the backwoods of Tanah Burung for talent, and today announced her starting roster, with only five returning players. "The Crocodiles failed to even qualify for the World Cup four years ago," she said. "We need a fresh start. Don't expect great things this year, but this is the nucleus of an excellent team for the future."
Bi Kikere has been granted a lucrative contract, the terms of which are secret, and a guaranteed eight years of employment with a no-dismissal clause. The 56-year old coach has also promised not to attempt to play goal herself. "In other words, they can't fire me again," she said. "This team has had enough coaches lately. Time for some stability and re-building. I'm also announcign today that religious cults are banned from the dressing room. Enough with the wierd-ass freak shows."

Big changes for the national squad announced!
Gillian Gilquest
Special to the Gilmeecian Sporting Times
In a much-anticipated move, President Lou Gilsterson today announced that the Gilmeecian national football squad will officially have a new nickname for World Cup 9. Previously known as the Kickfooters, the national side will henceforth be the Kickassers. Said President Gilsterson, "We're a top-twenty side, now. We've risen above the days of kickin' 'em in the foot-- now we kick ass."
It is not known whether the nickname will be retained should the team fail to perform well in the upcoming ninth World Cup.
In other Kickasser news, President Gilsterson announced the appointment of Morris Horschackio as head coach following Bi Kikere's dismissal. "We don't need any more foreign coaches," said the President. "We'll keep it domestic from now on."
Coach Horschackio's starting eleven mirror the starting side for the previous two Cups:

All Nikean football fans should remember 'Jaski'. He is a legend among the Nikean faithful, and his notoriety for bringing out the best in players is well-known. He is a former centre midfielder, and has since managed 3 different teams in the Nikean Premier League, bringing all three to the top 5 of the table. All fans love him despite his team affiliation, and his unique coaching style is perhaps what the team needs following their collapse in World Cup 8 qualifying.

Home - the Nikean home strip consists of a red jersey. The collar and striping, which is down the sides of the jersey and comes up to the armpit, is navy blue, while there is a navy blue hem on the end of the sleeve, complete with a very thin red line surrounding it. The crest of the jersey appears on the left side of the jersey, over the heart. Names and numbers are written in navy blue. The shorts are navy blue, as are the socks.
Away - the Nikean away strip consists of a white jersey, with the same navy blue trimming. Names and numbers are also navy blue. The shorts and socks are both white.

(excerpt courtesy of the Queldas Hikari)
The Pandas are a much improved squad for this World Cup, hoping to improve over their last performance, where they almost qualified but faltered in the last three games. After a successful Frosty Cup where they finished second, defeating a highly skilled Dark Outcasts team in the Semi Final, yet losing in the final to TnUI, the Nikeans are now ranked 44th in the world, and the hopes for qualification look good for the exciting Pandas squad. The roster is almost the same as the Frosty Cup side, but with a few exceptions.
A few changes have been made. Kirinen Nereniel has been kept in the starting lineup, while veteran Nilinen Istel, who had played 20 minutes while intoxicated in the Pandas 3-1 Frosty Cup semi-final with Dark Outcasts, has since retired from the international team, now playing his last football days domestically with his hometown of Orkinas. He is replaced on the bench by Ekserin Pilseniuene.
Akitomo Sakai has been moved up to a starting role, while Olesen Edhel is on the bench, making his first World Cup appearance. Despite Sakai's temper, which saw him get a red card in the Frosty Cup final, Jeski likes his "spunk, and competitiveness", and he plays with the starting eleven.
All in all, things are looking up for the Pandas, who hope to qualify for the big dance in their 3rd attempt.

The Hippos have never competed in a World Cup before so all of their players are rookies in that sense. The team is lead by keeper Tim "Timber" Kimber and firey winger Mick Starks. The strength of the team is it's midfield which helps facilitate a powerful offense as they play what Coach Ricky Braden calls "the run and shoot". The idea is that the midfielders take chances to force turnovers and push the ball up to their forwards. However, this leads to high scoring games and an emphasis away from defense. The defense is getting old and is adequate, at best, but Timber makes up for some of that.
Their base formation is the 3-5-2 as it plays to the strength of the team. Below the starters are listed with their age and skill level (out of 10- actually, it's the stars they get in hattrick if you're familiar with the game).
Starters
GK #1 Tim Kimber; 23, 4.5; good leader
DW #6 Arcadio Sanchez; 27, 3.0

The Hooligans were ranked 25th after WC3, and have since been ranked 39th after WC4, 20th after WC5, 6th after WC6, 10th after WC7, and 20th after WC8, for an overall average rank of: 20th. Isn't it interesting, then, that Bi Kikere, Once and Future Manager of the Tanah Burung Crocs, refers to the Hooligans as "Snub Nose 20"?

ARIDDIA
The team.
****** = a player who has been in the team since WC3
***** = a player who has been in the team since WC4
**** = a player who has been in the team since WC5
*** = a player who has been in the team since WC6
** = a player who has been in the team since WC7
* = a player who has been in the team since WC 8
Ariddia's colours:
Home: red top with a black slash going from the left shoulder to the right hip, and the same on the back.
Shorts are entirely black. Socks are red. We have declined to have sponsors mucking up our suits.
Away: the exact reverse. Black top, red slash, red shorts, black socks.
Goalkeeper: Dark green top, with the same black slash. Pale, apple-green shorts. Black socks.
After Ariddia’s poor performance in World Cup 8, there have been changes in the team. Several defence veterans have retired, entrusting younger players with the task bringing Ariddia back to its former standards. Kim Kim, though she survived her train accident in Limea, has been left a cripple. Her fellow players have promised to "play this Cup for her, and make her proud".
Raphael and Myrtille Ford are focusing on the task up bringing up their children, and have declined to play. With Ariddia’s three key forward players out, supporters are worried as to how the team will fare.
Ranjit Khan, now forty-two years of age, is still captaining a much changed (and, for the first time in many years, all-male) team. . .
GK: David al-Jibai (11)****
DEF: Samuel Wood (17)****, Yves Sylvain (9)***, Wn Wahd (20)**, Wesley Davidson (1)*

MID: Samuel Pasteur (8 )***, Kazushi Tomson (5)*, Victor Menuisier (14)*, Karim Li (18 )*
ATT: Abel Bond (10), Is Phillip (22)
Ranjit Khan
Number: 7
Position: Mid, Captain
First joined: World Cup 3
Khan, the team’s captain, has proved his proficiency in a variety of abilities, able to press forward attacks or defend. He’s grown to be a favourite with supporters through his solid good playing, seeming to be omnipresent in the pitch.
Khan's skin is brown. He's in his early forties. He wears startling bright green eye lenses, and supporters in the stadium can often be seen wearing similar ones.
David al-Jibai
Number: 11
Position: Goalkeeper
First joined: World Cup 5
al-Jibai’s skill has grown over the past Cups, allowing Ariddia to better its goal differences, and is a solid asset to the team.
al-Jibai is in his mid thirties, and is a rather tall, skinny man of Arab origins. He keeps his dark hair quite long, reaching down to his shoulders. His eyes are brown.

Because of its declining performance over the years, the government of Gesamtkuntswerk (who holds majority stock of the team) has decided to forcibly retire all football players from the WC team (their regional team membership is, of course, retained) and recruit the greatest new talents in Gesamtkuntswerk. Ravenspire starting lineup:
Goalkeeper: Autumn Mistmarch* (7)
Defenders: Adam Spencer (7), Alex Wylde (9), Fox Lee* (7), Karl Jacobson (7)
Midfield: Eileen Schiller* (9), Michael Matthew Maule (8 )
Strikers: Zhen Sui-Ling* (3), Kaede Kitsuki* (5), Amara Akizuki* (4), Arawn Frost (7)
Team colors: Black and red.
Very few changes from the WC8 team, which was Ravenspire's most successful yet. Midfielder Joseph Schiller was replaced by his younger sister, and defender Lynn Armitage, a fixture since WC4, retired. Zhen Sui-Ling, the oldest player on the circuit, once again surprises many by returning; fellow veterans Amara Akizuki and Kaede Kitsuki (both of whom were much younger when they first joined the team than was Sui-Ling during WC3) anchor the offense.
The number in parentheses indicates the first World Cup in which the player participated. A *bullet* indicates a female player.

This being our first ever WC, all of our squad are newcomers to the big time.
We generally play a 4-4-2 formation, with one defensive CM and one attacking CM. Nearly, but not quite, a diamond formation.
The First Team (with some descriptive colour):
GK: Blind Bob. Albino in colour, he is a first rate controller and organiser of the defense in front of him. He has a good grasp and understanding of the game around him, and is rarely caught out. His relex saves, however, are poor and are the major weakness to his game.
LB: Shoddy Bob. Good heading, fast on the ground. Not so good at delicate tackles, prefering the more aggresive approach. Although a fast player his balance his poor and will fall on his arse regularly if trying to turn sharpish. Often played for purely comic reasons.
RB: Psycho Bob. As the name suggests. Poor discipline and hard tackling make this man a good bet for the first yellow of any game. An otherwise solid player- imagine Gary Neville with attitude.
CB: Cap'n Bob: Imagine Rio Ferdinand with an Afro haircut. An impressive reader of the game, he lacks pace.
CB: Bobovic: Generally Ok, he is competant in most areas without either excelling or embarrassing himself.
LW: Bob Ingalong: Fast, deadly dribbler of the ball with a poor cross at the end of it.
RW: Posh Bob: Almost the opposite of Bob Ingalong, apart from his massive, bright-green mullet
DCM: Bob a Job: Tall, muscular player with an exquisite tackle and a delightful pass. Not very attacking minded he protects the defense
CM: Magic Bob: Now this player is a joy to watch. Fast, deft ball control. A wizard at the dribble, his Gullit-style dreadlocks flapping in the wind. With astonshing balance he can ride out most tackles and emerge still with the ball at his feet. An absolutely gifted player, and absolutely selfish as well. Will rather take on too many players than pass to a teammate in a better position.
CF: Wee Bob. Very small player his heading ability is nonexistent. Also his physical presence is too small to lead the line or to bully past defenses. However his blistering speed and deadly accuracy make him a forward to be watched.
CF: Bob Tastic!. The only player in the team with an exclaimation mark. Deadly player in the box. Not so deadly out of it.

The Dragons are looking to qualify for the first world cup under the new Dragonian Football Federation. The new DFF caused the entire squad from the old world cup to boycott the qualification. Now, a new generation of footballers has been bred and non better than child prodigy Lissësúl Sargent. The 16 year-old has proven himself worthy of the captain's armband and will be the future of the already young Dragonian squad. The average age this year is 23, with the youngest, Lissësùl at 16, and the oldest, Barantasarë at 32.

The stars on the uniforms indicate the Cups the player participated in. A blue-and-white (or gray) star indicates a Cup played as a backup, and a blue, red, and white (or gray) star indicates a Cup played as a starter. The sleeve patches represent the state (in CH) or country (outside CH) that the player is from. Vojtilo's sleeve has the New Manhattan (state) design, Wallace's is the Dextremmika (CH dependency) design, and the alternate sleeve designs are (in order): Northwest Territories (state), New Anaphase (state), Northern Jativa (state), Lower Manhattan (state), Unified Planets (CH dependency), New Manhattan (CH dependency), and Bedistan (independent country ;) ). Though there are not actually any Bulldogs players from Bedistan, the patch was created anyway.

GEORGE MCDOUGLAS, FUTEBOL DIRECTOR SEZ:
It would appear that Urk Pulpy, Urk Jones, Urk Tamale-Underhill, Urk Seedykins and Urk Visser-Eight were all grown from similar if not exact DNA.
Nah, they changed their names. Everyone wants to be Just Like Urk.
