And the verdict is ... [OOC thread now]

19-10-2003, 13:39
The mighty Cathedral of Saint Cuthbert towered above the Peninsula painted dark by the evening, an extravagant and ancient monument to the Lord. The Crusaders of the Ordo Templi Sancti - the militant branch of the Ordo Sancti Mundi, stood in neat rank and file outside, cross-emblazoned white tabards over elaborate ballistic- and stab-proof Kevlar armour decorated to resemble plate mail. Ornate and practical swords hung at their belts and they cradled assault rifles in their arms.

http://wso.williams.edu:8000/~dredmond/cathedrals/durham/sdur.jpg

Gargoyles leered down from on high at the uncaring backs of the soldiers, and Whispering Voices Shepherds flanked the massive doors that lead into the nave of the cathedral.

http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/Lookup/Cathedral_and_Castle__images/$file/Cathedral_altar_FULL.jpg

This was the date of the Trial, where the Inquisitorial Court would pass judgement upon the creatures presented before it. The inside of the Cathedral was solemn, quiet, almost empty. The grand altar - dappled in many colours by the stained glass window behind - was blocked off by a thin red-silk rope twined around a golden chain.

The Prince Bishop sat on oaken pew surrounded by his personal guard, and the leader of the Ordo Sancti Mundi, Grand Master Solomon - old where the Prince Bishop was young - stood respectfully nearby. The doors to the Cathedral were always open during the day, but now night was drawing in ...

Two choristors, dressed in the white-and-red-trimmed robes of office, pushed on the oaken doors as the last of the light faded from the cathedral's doorway. They clanged shut.

The cathedral was ready for the trial.

"Bring forth the defendents," called out the Grand Master. Flanked by guards, peacebonded rosaries around their wrists - the breaking of which would be considered sacrilege - a man and a winged woman were brought in; a person in androgynous golden body armour following, his helmet off revealing a young but stern face, golden yellow hair and blue eyes that matched the dark sky outside.

"We, the Holy Court, are gathered here to pass judgement upon these two sinners," Solomon continued. "Standing here before you are one Malice, of Eris Kallisti, a vampire; and one Ravelyn Shentavo, a vampire."

The two were led up to the dock, a pulpit with a Holy Bible of great antiquity resting upon it.

"Let the Trial commence ... "

OOC:

Because I'm a fool and went to have lunch, I forgot to add this bit in (editing top post to include it).

The following are the "rules":

1) Absolutely no form of magic or psychic power works within the Cathedral itself. Same goes for sudden energy bursts (teleportation, giant space lasers, etc). The spirits that rule the land feed off such energy, and drain it away. However, natural, physical prowess does work (should it come to it). So, although (for example) Rave is denied her immense power - she's quite welcome to beat someone over the head with a heavy oaken pew (assuming that her strength comes from enhanced muscles rather than magic, etc).
2) Within the nation of Endless Regrets, only divine (Christian) effects work.
3) No-one has been invited or told about it. This is partically because during my discussion with Rave on the matter, she expressed a wish for this to be the case. This does not mean that people cannot try and join in - however they'll have to have good IC reasons for a) knowing where it is (no psychic communications, remember) and b) getting to said location.
4) In the event of military mobilisation - this will actually involve mobilisation, rather than troops teleporting into the middle of the market square. There are many threads about the security of Whispering Voices and its assorted fiefdoms, but basically:
i) closed country. A three-line Maginot equivalent is around the land border (shared with New Aeigeron and Austrin-Ontis). The land is almost all mountainous. The sea is closely monitored. There is one "open" (ish) trade city, Freeport, actually in Austrin-Ontis, and two guarded trade cities (no foreigners allowed out into the actual country) at Hush and Quiet. No, Whispering Voices doesn't have a tourism industry.
ii) Whispering Voices is almost entirely arctic. It's about as far north as Svalbard, and mountainous and barren. A map can be found here (http://www.darkeningskies.net/nationstates/devilsdesert.jpg).

So, to recap: you can get involved, but will have to go to the effort of finding out about it first. Bearing this in mind, and the fact the trial is going ahead quite fast (Rave's request), I apologise in advance to those who wanted to get involved but don't have time.

Ravelyn was slightly annoyed at the court...didn't like the people at all. They would clearly see the angelic wings upon her back that may bring up some questions. Her fangs were not visable at all. From their point of view, she looked like an angel....when they counted Six wings...she looked like a seraphim....like Azrael. She didn't speak a word but laughed slightly. These people are really nieve. Let's just get this over with so that they can get back to their dellusions...my alliances are already on the brink of calling a war council...I hope it doens't come to that...I'd hate to see this inquizitor who tried to kill me die *in her mind, the last sentence was somewhat sarcastic. There were many present in her defence...including Marie, whom she had worked with for a very long time.

To hear that Miss Ravelyn has been brought upon trial for reasons I think she should have never been brought upon, I wish to attend in her defence. I have met her on several occasions, and worked with her for three years. There is no doubt in my mind that she has a good soul...and I have evidence.

Rave finally spoke, being heavily sedated as not to attempt escape, she spoke faintly. "And what exactly am I being accused of? What the hell...gives you the right...to take someone, who has done nothing to deserve it..." The angel was struggling, and was so damn stubborn, she raged a fight against the aseditives...

19-10-2003, 15:44
"First in the dock shall be Ravelyn Shentavo, who claims to be Azrael - Seraphim and the Word of Death." Grand Master Solomon's voice was carefully blank, his face inscrutable as he ignored Ravelyn's interruption of the proceedings. "She shall be judged by the Prince Bishop and myself, and her sentence executed immediately. Her trial shall be lead by Lord Inquisitor Edwards."

He then sat down, his robes rustling as he did so. Edwards - the cold-eyed man - walked slowly up the nave, until he reached the steps that lead up to the pulpit that faced the accused. He bowed first towards the altar, at the far end of the nave, and then to the jury, before kissing the Holy Bible in front of him.

"I solemnly swear to tell the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God." His voice, outside the synthesiser of his helmet, was soft and melodious, and a little quiet - but not soft like silk or honey, but like the murmurings of a mountain stream cascading from on high: full of the promise of cold. The voice of a choir singer, it was, that laid down the charges upon the six-winged creature of the night.

"Ravelyn Shentavo, you have been brought to the Holy Court of the Ordo Sancti Mundi to receive a judgement for your crimes. You are accused of the drinking of blood, of the encouragement of the drinking of blood, and of perversion of the Divine message. To emphasise these points, I cite Proverbs 30, verse 14: "There is a generation whose teeth are as swords, and their great teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men," and Leviticus 17, verse 14: "Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh; for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof; whosoever eateth it shall be cut off."

"You claim to be an angel - a Seraphim, in fact, and therefore having been blessed by the Word of God himself. And yet you not only drink the blood of others, you create more like yourself who do so. You claim to follow the Holy Book, and yet your very existence spits upon the message of the Lord."

His voice grew louder, during the Biblical recitations. "So, Ravelyn Shentavo, the first question I put to you is this: have you during your life drunk of the blood of the flesh, other than during Holy Communion and the transubstantiated blood of Christ that is sacramental wine?"

19-10-2003, 15:48
OOC: Well, needless to say that Iuthia is putting alot of resources into finding out where at Wisp actually went after it dived into the sea with Rave and Malice on board.

You'll have to bare with me a little through WV, because I'll admit that I don't know how to go about this kind of investigation seeing as I'm not an expert on science despite the fact that my nation will have very smart people who do know alot about science.

This said I will firstly start my IC actions by firstly alerting Rave's nation about what has happened, making sure to be as detailed as possible... of course we don't actually know all of the details (like where Ravellyn is) but they will know what my James deGritz knows. The same goes for Eris Kallisti.

After this I will send a small fleet of ships to the spot where the Wisp disappeared and then use the best investigative equipment we have to search for things we learned about the Wisp after we had some people evaluate it first. We are hoping for some kind of trail left behind or something... though we aren't getting our hopes up with the sea being what it is.

I am fairly sure this is not a public trial, so I doubt that anyone is going to just turn up without Wispering Voices actually inviting them to his nation.

A little bit of background into why Iuthia is here and how Rave got caught (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=72858&highlight=)... be warned though, it's pretty long.

Basically I'm here because Rave was caught in my nation. The only people who know Rave went to my nation and didn't come back are the people in Rave's nation.

If you want WV, the investigation may either take place in TM, another thread or here... if you TM me if the finding of each part of the investigation (if any) then I will be able to RP people reacting to finding and so on.

OOC: I was requested by Rave to send this character in as her defense.

IC:

The cathedral doors slowly opened at the hands of a tall man, dressed in a red overcoat and wearing a large red hat. His medium-length black hair was swept back around his neck as he stepped in, walking up towards the front of the chapel, his footstepd echoing through the hall.

As he reached the front, and the end of the pews, he bowed to Ravelyn, and then went down on one knee, bending his head to the Lord Inquisitor. "Lord Edwards," he said quietly, his slightly open mouth revealing two small fangs, showing him to be a vampire himself, "My name is Corothisia. I come here in defense of Ravelyn Shentavo."

He straightened his legs again, raising his body up straight, not smiling, not even opening his mouth. "I will not deny the fact that I myself am an ancient vampire, the oldest to walk this earth. But I come here in peace and, with your permission, will leave in peace as well, if God and the assembled company here allows."

OOC: Same reason as Haraki, but I am having to use a secodary character, so bear with me....

IC: The doors slowly open to let in another creature, clothed in heavy robes. A slight chill may be felt by the others as he enters. As he walks, his staff clicks loudly against the hard floor. He moves to the front of the pews and stands, not moving or making a sound. His time to speak would come.
19-10-2003, 18:54
OOC:

OK. There isn't a problem with people getting involved, however in case you missed the IC and OOC posts at the top of the thread, no-one is simply being allowed to walk in. Iuthia, who's nation is researching the kidnapping, will - when his research is over - post and let the relevant nations (Eris Kallisti, Rave Shentavo) know, at which point they can request people enter. However, I should state now and categorically that anyone who simply tries to enter the Cathedral without permission will be killed by the large number of soldiers outside.

Plus anyone who's entirely "supernatural" and "evil" will be unable to enter the Cathedral of their own volition, anyway. Demons and vampires just aren't going to survive long under the direct gaze of a deity who dislikes them.

This isn't intended as an insult against Crimmond - I sent a telegram to Haraki, but now I can see I'm going to have to make it public - but the "rules" need to apply to all.

You can get involved, just we need to set the background (since the words of a concerned person who politely asks for a video conference is going to have a very different effect on the jury from the words of an evil creature the Crusaders outside subdued).

This is gonna seriously mess with the Rave/Evil Uber-Evil-Thing... Oh well... I can't folllow what happens in half of her RPs anyway.

Err... Crimmond... I don't know how long Rave was planning that über evil thing, but this thread started with an event that happened one month ago (Real Time) and Rave got caught about a week ago after seven pages of one of the most epic battles she has ever been in… the only reason she lost was because of the massive factors that were in the Inquisitors favour. I would also like to point out (even though it ruins the drama a little) that Rave is still going to be doing her über evil thing because we’ve already RPed talk about her a while after she was caught… this is probably a couple weeks ago from Rave’s present…

Anyways… I’ve got some research to do, I’ve pretty much got basics on how my nation is going to find out who actually caught Rave and Malice, but I want to get some depth into it… e.g. I don’t just use the summary of my finding that WV gives me and I actually look into it.

Both Rave Shentavo (The Nation) and Eris Kallisti will be updated to our findings… after that it is up to the two individual nations to choose whom they give that information to.

I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do as a nation once this kicks off… and it will kick off. But I think diplomacy will be a large part of it… I don’t really like the idea of going to war in a character thread right now. The only chance I would of done something stupid like a war would have been if James deGritz was killed by the hunters… that would of started something close to a quick mindless rage again nations we reckon did it.

Currently all that Eris Kallisti and Rave Shentavo (the Nation) know is that both Malice and Rave have been captured in Iuthia during a conference on vampires, that the men who did it were hunters in powered armour and that they disappeared after their UFO dived into the ocean, Iuthia remains adamant that they are searching for them with all the resources they can spare… as well as asking allies for information regarding the UFO and likely suspects.

I will hopefully post another IC thread to run along side the trial, which is going to be more diplomacy based because quite frankly I’m not running into the situation guns blazing… I don’t have those kinds of resources when it comes down to it (plus I’m still working on my navy figures…).

I think we worked out that the Wisp is way too fast to follow, I couldn’t keep up with it and I had spy satellites… plus it was felt little unfair to jump a second über vampire to save the day… I’ll admit it; the situation was balanced so that WV would win… because I didn’t want to see all that work go to waste.

I don’t suppose I can also add that the use of powers from God will cancel out… this is in my mind explainable through both IC and OOC reasons.

OOC: Both players could be Christian and as such could claim that god was on their side. It would be a little unfair and cheeky to say that god supported one more then they supported the other…

IC: God would likely have lost one of the two if he supported either one… think about it. If God helps one faction out, the other will be angered and will become more opposed to the stronger faction. However, God could let the two work them selves out and use circumstance and luck to help out where needed so they eventually accept one another.

I hate to be a rule hog, but you I’m sure you guys know the NS position on god helping out with wars, so I don’t see this as any different. It’s something which should only be used at both parties concent…

I really don't see a problem with God, Ravellyn is/was Azrael a Seraphim, now I am not too sure about exactly what she is, but she is still part Seraphim, so to say that god does not exist in this circumstance, would mean that Rave would only half exist.

Ghaaa... you miss understand... it's not that God doesn't exist, it's that God is not willing to help too much becuase he could lose one or the other of his followers by assisting.

Anyways, you ignore the fact that Whisping Voices has the right to be close to god too, seeing as this is in the name of religion and he does (if you check the conference thread) use some powers based around this belief... the point is that both sides are claiming to be more holy then thou...

I think Rave being half vampire balances out the Seriphim thing, she is still holy but she still drinks blood (albeit from willing humans) so her halo is a little tainted so to speak.

Niether side can really claim moral high ground becuase they both fighting over it. Plus this isn't really meant to be a combat thread... I just don't like god jumping in when he's got much better things to do.

I have to admit, that is a fair point. Personally I would put that down to belief-based magic (e.g. D&D Anti-Magic Shell) though I see your point… I think I wander off from “They cancel out” to “No god”… well… I’ll leave it to WV and Rave to sort out.

The 'Divine' antieverything field is just over the holy spots of the nation (anywhere with an altar dedicated to Christ). As it happens, the rest of the nation is populated by disembodied spirits (ref: many other threads) that feed off energy - the more powerful or magical the better. So giant teleporting armies or huge demons would just be eaten alive by said energy draining spirits.

The whole conflict between spirits and priests is a whole other matter being developed in a seperate thread.

Hope that helps.

The above OOC message was meant as a scenario and nothing more to see what chances I've got, but by the sounds of it, even a raid using high speed grav vehicles (not any bigger then a tank, we don't use the technology much but I have declared it on numberous occasions) would be impossible... which seems a bit much, afterall, I'm meant to have a great defence (being a nation that focuses on it) yet I don't actually (ooc) know enough to stop things like high tech raids.

The force is simply a staging area to launch from becuase I do not have any friendly areas to launch things from... like a plane used to drop a grav chute team. So I can find out where they are and then get them, using the raid as an extraction stratagie.

Don't get me wrong, I prefer to do everything as realistic as possible (why else would I position carriers near your nation?) but it's geting rather silly... I could offer to send James over, I guess... but I've been IC advise against it... others are waiting for a war that isn't going to happen and diplomacy seems to be pointless, I don't have anything I can concede to you that will make the situation any better...

I could request to give evidence at the trial I guess... but methinks that won't help much.

Eitherway, what would you like me to do? It's not as glamous as coming to the conclusion myself, but it's the quickest eay through this.

OOC:
Alright. Basically you're thinking about it all wrong. Whispering Voices, and the whole region it's in, are highly militarised, highly aggressive, highly paranoid - almost half the nations are in the top 1000 on military spending now, and over 1.5 billion populace. Sending an overt military force is like sticking a ... stick ... into a hornet's nest: you'll anger them, and be swamped.

Likewise, 'obvious' options like flying ships in, sadly, are covered by DAMOCLES: there's a multi-layered, multi-national defence system including orbital and 'deep' space (extra-orbit) coverage of the region.

However, I've left clues (since I knew you were doing research): there's currently a massive storm over Whispering Voices (in the Search for Heroes thread). It's a coastal nation. Now, covering the air is relatively easy: covering the depths of the sea bed in a nation close to the Arctic circle is a lot harder. Obviously, security is tight - and may still pick you up - but I think for what you want to do, if you want people to make it to shore alive one 'obvious' option would be submarinally: maybe a small, 3-person low-emission submarine.

I’ve not got the time for a decent post but I’d like to point out that I didn’t know I’d be in “regional waters” I assumed I would be in “international waters” seeing as people don’t start wars with you as much when you are not invading their region with a fleet. I was kind of hoping this would be implied as my nation would been in your “national waters” with we wanted to use it to attack… again, the idea at the time was to (OOC) save time by doing something my mind could comprehend… setting up a staging area well outside of your waters but close enough so that any long range craft or boat could reach without running out of fuel… even this small sub idea (the only one I can use because I’ve not done nearly enough research… like I said, I’m not good at it) would require somewhere to refuel or launch from… I don’t know for sure but if it’s small it would require more support wouldn’t it and we don’t want to loose our crew by simply having them go all the way from Iuthia.

However, I would also like to note the fleet’s course was gradually moving away from your nation and your region… if that is possible. Now they will move directly away from your nation… but not before I think of a course action.

After thinking for a while... I've come to the conclusion that this thread is becoming something well beyond my capability when it comes to this kind of roleplay. Now lets go over why I'm having problems...

Firstly, I can't plan ahead in this case because I wouldn't know how to plan ahead... in this thread everything I read and have learnt tells me that his nation has some of the most insanly protected boarders, no tourists and even protections from dopplegangers... my first idea way space... but I didn't look hard enough (or even look much) to notice that was completely impossible, as even a innocent rock would be atomized going towards his nation.

So now I'm faced with something more conventional... parachutes perhaps? No. Because most air defences will stop such things with ease and I think... from what I've heard, the space defence system stops that too (even though the term "atmostpheric" would suggest to me that they we not talking about low altitudes).

Ship perhaps? A small ship may have a chance... but with the amount of things watching out for that I doubt a small inflatable craft would make it. Let alone something with more range... but I'll get to that in a minute.

Underwater? Well, this has only just been advised to me, I thought you could have something like sonar covering alot of the coast, but maybe that is a misconseption... I just thought that underwater can be pretty easy to cover with the right equipment. Of course, I've been told that a maybe a small sub will do it...

But here is my problem...

It is my understanding that a small craft or vehicle of any kind would require support if it had to cross large distances... e.g. a car would need to be refuelled, as would a plane, as would small ship and finally... small subs are rarly capable of long ranges...

So this gave me an idea for my first plan. I needed something that could get these small hard to detect craft close enough to Whispering Voices so they could make it without crashing or otherwise failing to reach WV. To do this I need either:

A Ally near WV.

A small fleet of support craft, carriers and defence ships to protect the latter.

The idea was simple to learn of the where abouts of my lost guests and friends and then to raid that area with fast Hover Tanks carried by a special carrier and then quickly leave before the big guns can catch up. Though that could of been nasty.

It was, I thought, a nasty twist to situation that started from a raid on my own nation that I can do nothing about.

However... now it looks like that fleet is going to be destroyed if it doesn't move away, which it probably will, because while all our gut instincts may say I'm an idiot for moving a large offencive force near WV... I'm not so completely idiotic as to have a couple thousand trained personnel get killed without me being able to lift a finger to help.

I could still get some people on to WV's mountain range nation and then find the trail... but I would have no way of leaving or using a small team to raid a very well defended trial.

So I haven't a clue about what to do... at all... even if I get into the nation I would need to be so lucky in getting them back from a great military force and then escape some how in a James Bond fashion... it just doesn't look possible.

Don't get me wrong, I will take my hits when I need to... I am willing to loose men (OOC, IC I will save what I can) but I can't see how.

So say that is ultimately why I don't post IC much... because all actions are loaded with a lot of things I don't know but I should...

bah... and thats the last rant I'll do on this thread for a while... I feel humbled (more so) and for someone as arrogant as me there is only so many times I can say...

Your presence off the coast of the region is unacceptable in the extreme. Regardless of the fact that you have not crossed the geographical boundary, Thulackack feels that her sovreignty is threatened by the large and potentially hostile fleet. Therefore we offer a simple message. Leave and never return or be destroyed. In no way should Thulack's Might be doubted on this point. We are more than capable of reducing the fleet to salvage. I cannot be any clearer. Let us hope that we never have to have contact with you again or it shall be less polite.
