Sigmala desert, Sigma Octavus
The tracked hummer drove along over the bright white sands of the desert. It was just another boring patrol in the interior of Sigma Octavus. 5 SOMI infantry sat in the back, while another drove. They were complaining about their posts, as always.
"....and while the SOET and higher ranks of SOMI are out fighting for our country and NATO, we just drive around in the desert, looking for intruders that haven't been in over a hundred years."
The sergeant in the group looked at the one who had talked and told him the same thing he told him everyday. "Look, if it wasn't important, we wouldn't be here."
"Yeah sarge. We know."
A fairly new soldier was daydreaming as he stared out the passsenger seat window. He could just imagine himself exchanging fire with an enemy while he stood next to the SOET. And then he saw movement. He lifted his head and looked closer. Something was definitely moving. But nothing had lived in this desert for decades.
"Stop the truck."
The driver looked at him oddly. "What?"
"Stop the truck, I saw something move."
The truck pulled to a stop and the soldiers got out, rifles at the ready. They were excited, they might get to shoot something.
An explosion of dust appeared to their left, and they filled it with lead. After the dust settled, a still form lay in the disturbed sand.
The creature was about 6 feet long and scaly. It was definitely reptilian. It had what appeared to be flippers of some kind. They had never seen anything like it.
"Get that thing in the truck. Let's take it back to base."
(Just setting up the fact that the saber-toothed snails are all extinct, so I'm changing the national animal. It is now the sand diver. Im bored.)
