OOC: Check your telegrams for results and roleplay accordingly.
You could even do a pre-Cup roleplay... like this:
IC: Kaze Progressa travelled to their friends Belmore Family yesterday ready for the third Field Hockey World Cup. After elimination in the second round on home soil last time, the Progressans want to get at least that far again.
Most analysts feel they can. Daily Kangaroo analyst Jaeuan Marue is among the most optimistic, saying 'a quarter-final place is the least this side should be expecting... if we can get that far, and we should, anything can happen.'
More pessimistic is Mabu Fuamgazzia, of The Globe - famous mouthpiece of the cynical Left. He says 'If we could not progress beyond the last sixteen on home soil, with fanatical support, what hope do we have without such support? Besides, with no second chances for finishing third in the group, it is harder to progress from it.'
In that group, the Progressans have drawn Grand Master Mark for the second Cup in a row, alongside Agnosticum and Spauldmerica. Marue calls it 'a highly manageable group'; Fuamgazzia calls it 'dangerous'.
OOC: DePaul appear twice, in Group B and Group C...

Hmmmm... I think Akbarland will be seeking revenge for my 3-1 win over them in the Semi's last FHWC.

Third time lucky?
The superstitious fans of Tanah Burung have been consulting their horoscopes for prospects in their third run at the Field Hockey World Cup. This time, they are optimistic about their chances to advance, having been drawn into Group H along with hosts The Belmore Family, number 20 Ur6, and number 30 Never Setting Sun.
"Third time, it's the charm," said one astrology-mad fan. "Stars are with us, Mars is in Capricorn, it's our best chance ever."
Number-cruncher Mau Slurp has placed Tanah Burung's odds at 25-1, noting that they have a good chancwe to take one of the top two spots in the group. "FHWC1 was in Tanah Burung, and The Belmore Family did very well. Therefore, Tanah Burung will do very well now that the Cup is in The Belmore Family. Logical fallacy? What that?"
"TBF? We hateses them," said Mau Smeagol, one of the less savoury Tanah Burung fans. "They beatses us all the time in football. We wantses revenge!" (TB fans only hate TBF in-character, of course!)
It appears that the Akbarland team has been drawn in the group of death with 3 top ten ranked teams. Nevertheless the sporting public is supremely confident of not only winning the group but of going all the way as well.
Ravenspire
19-10-2003, 07:19
The Ravenspire Vixens, who came out of nowhere to clinch sixth place in the last Cup despite having never played field hockey proper before, are confident that a victory is in the cards this year. "We had the highest-scoring team last time around, and we're looking to repeat that this time," says Kelly Morita, a veteran of the squad. "Plus, this time we're sure everyone will remember that it's not legal to swing the stick at the opponents' heads. Well, pretty sure."

From the Daily Kangaroo:
NEWBIES STUN SLEEPY PROGRESSANS
Kaze Progressa slumped to an embarrassing defeat in their first Group G match, losing 3-0 to unranked Agnosticum.
The Progressans were sleepy throughout, defending horrifically and showing no cutting edge in attack. They did not create a single penalty corner all game, and two of their three goals were conceded from penalty corners.
Fans are already calling for the sacking of the hockey manager, just weeks after they got rid of the football manager Chares Catrar after the Frosty Cup. Their next match, against Spauldmerica who had the worst record in FHWC2, is a must-win.
Spauldmerican Hurricanes note that the are a 0-1-0 at the moment, with all very close games. SNN, the Spauldmerican News Network, has interveiwed the head coach, Ecala Wanight.
SNN: The Hurricanes are off to somewhat of a slow start, what are you focusing on at practises?
EW: We've noticed that all the games have been low scoring, so our defense is doing their job. We're doing a ton of offense drills to keep them active and on their feet. We've taken some kids from the minors that we beleive will help us out offensivly.
SNN: Do you feel your team is a contender for this World Cup?
EW: Since day one, I knew this tournament had some great teams coming in, but I feel that my team can compete with them all. We've been practising everyday. Practise Practise Practise, I can't stress that enough.
SNN: What about behind the scenes? Are you happy with your management staff?
EW: Yes, I am very happy with these guys. To them, the team is #1.
SNN: Anything else?
EW: Yes, Im very happy to annouce the signing of the SHL's Top Goal Scorer and Point Scorer to our Hurricane Roster, Andre Hawk. He will take over the captaincy of the team. We have high expectation for the kid, but we know he will produce many points and wins for our team.
****
So, In a surprise annoucment, Hurricanes sign Andre Hawk who will play in Hurricanes next game.
Our next game vs. KP should be a tough one. They have an amazing team but we plan on putting up quiet a fight.

Rejistania
19-10-2003, 18:31
From the Sikenian Daily:
1-3, but a great game!
The first match of the Rejistanha'ny with their new coach Nelil Ri was against the 15th ranked team of Joshh. The rejistanian fans did not expect very much, but they came in great numbers like always when a rejistanian team tries to compete international.
The game was hard, but fair. And most important: The Rejistanha'ny did not play like a bunch of oddballs who play by the means of luck, but like one team that is prepared to play international and has its chances.
At the end the result was 1-3. The only reji goal was scored by Len.
Even though the game was lost, the fans were quite happy. Instead of shouting "On, han'il"(On, leave!) they chanted a song which was originally taken from a KaMaRian soccer team: "Rej-stanha'lil lasane'het raju!"(Rejistania has a great team!)
To this, we can totally agree!
Tanah Burung
19-10-2003, 21:10
Tanah Burung, a name synomymous with field-hockey mediocrity, opened with a mediocre result against the hosts. No one scored. No one did anything much to impress the fans. There were no spectacular plays made. Everything was covered in a dull grey blanket of average-ness.
"What this team needs," said disappointed fan Carlos da Cruz, "is a nickname of some sort. Then maybe they'll do something more interesting than a 0-0 draw. Maybe we could call them the Fighting Ostriches. Or the Stick-wielding Orangutans. Or the Lazy-eyed Emus. Something with some colour."
Players will vote on a niuckname and plan to unveil it before their next match against the Never Setting Sun.
The Weegies

Weegies Star Sport Report
In today's first round of matches in the Hockey World Cup Group stages, The Weegies beat group outsiders Marno 2-0 with goals from Garrett and Sliman.
This good result leaves The Weegies in a good position, which is all very well considering the other two teams in Group F, Rejistania and Joshh, are almost identically seeded to our team (19th and 15th respectively) making this a very interesting group, since the similarity in rankings make it nearly impossible to deduce who will go through.
"We performed well out there" said manager John Tillett, "although the newcomers performed admirably - their defence was a lot tougher after we scored our second goal, so fair credit to them."
"I think the groups are a little skewed though, an organisational matter I wouldn't have expected from a tournament in it's third time. I mean, in Group B, there are three new teams plus the number five seed Voyger, while in Group C the number 3 and 4 seeds have been put together! It's sheer madness! I think the organisers have to pull their socks up and do a little better in the future."

Ravenspire
19-10-2003, 21:38
The Ravenspire Vixens proved as good as their word, battling in a trademark high-energy, high-scoring game to a 3-2 victory over Wildthings Realm. Self-appointed spokesman Kelly Morita notes, "Yeah, we might want to look at our defense a bit more, but attacking is so much more fun. Even though you can't actually attack the other players in field hockey. Anyway, you have to admit, as far as the spectators are concerned, an aggressive strategy makes for a great match." Judging from their reactions during the match, the Vixens' fans agree.
The Weegies

That was my IC response, I'm not taking it that seriously in RL, of course. But it ws my way of putting forward a valid point in IC terms. Most sporting competition groups are organised very strictly, normally a top seed, a lesser seed, then the unseeded teams (or even lesser seeds). That's the way the football WC is organised, both in NS and in RL. It's to prevent the big teams from meeting each other too soon, I think.

TIMWAY PERFORMS IN LACKLUSTER FASHION TO DRAW COFFEE CUP
Timway fans were so bored during this game that they were drawing coffee cups on their hands while their team drew Coffee Cup on the field. The defense which surrendered only four goals in winning the previous Cup let in two tonight, while the offense came alive and scored two of its own to make the end result a 2-2 draw. Timway coach Black stated that his team's intensity must improve if they wish to return to form and repeat as Cup champions.

ANESSA BURBANK LEADS AGNOSTICIUM TO VICTORY
(AP) - In a meeting of two teams that have met in various sporting events, Agnosticium was able to gain the upper hand over Kaze Progressa. Led by All-Agnos collegian, Anessa Burbank, the Agnostican team shut out the favored Progressans in a 3-0 upset. Goalie Liz DiFiore was accorded defensive player of the game honors for her seventeen saves as the Progressan team challeneged her early and often, forcing her to make several spectacular saves. Forwad Anessa Burbank took much of the pressure off of DiFiore early with two quick goals in the first period and an assist on the third goal in the second.
For Agnosticium this is the first Field Hockey event on a world scale and the team is hoping to build upon the success of this first game. Unfortunately, they will have to go without star defender Vanessa Baker who broke her shin today while blocking the goal in a last ditch attepmt at a save. Though she saved the ball, a Progressan stick smashed into her leg and broke it cleanly.

Lack of preparation hits Halfassed.
The Halfassed field Hockey side got off to a slow start in WC3.
Playing against the previously unknown team from Omaris, Halfassed got caught cold in the 3rd minute, falling behind to a freak deflection that left Iain Taylure completely wrong footed.
The score stayed like and with 5 minutes remaining, it seemed as though we would witness the first upset in this years cup. Then, the Omaris defender gave away a penatly flick. A strike from Sean Bendy had rebounded off the diving keeper, and as Dave Little went to knock home the loose ball, the defender hooked his stick. The umpire pointed to the spot and yellow carded the defender.
Sean Bendy stepped up and scored the flick to gave Halfassed a hardly deserved draw.
Final Score: Halfassed 1 Omaris 1
In the other game in the group Timway drew 2-2 with Coffee-cup, who Halfassed play next. Timway take on Omaris.

And Weegies is right. I did a bit of seeding for FHWC2 groups, with a ranked team in each group (there were only about ten ranked teams then, six of the original 16 from FHWC1 didn't enter 2 :D).
OCC: Weegies, yes, I consider a shutout a great performance
IC: Daistallia was smacked today by a rolling DePaul team 3-0, Coach Abraham of the Blue Demons says his team is "...hungry for the cup which we were denied last year."
Tanah Burung
21-10-2003, 01:10
Their smashing win over Ur6 signalled the arrival of the Never Setting Sun as a force in Group H. The Tanah Burung Fighting Ostriches (players' choice for team nickname) fought them to a 2-2 draw. That leaves the Fightong Ostriches on two points, Never-Setting Sun on 4, and The Belmore Family on 1, pending the result of their match against Ur6.
Akbarland bounced back from a defeat to Daistilla to beat whipping boys Friendly toys 2-0. Qualification chances will surley behelped now by a Daistilla defeat to Friendly toys altough the team are baying for DePaul's blood and would prefer to qualify witha n emphatic victory over them.
Ravenspire
21-10-2003, 07:10
The Ravenspire Vixens, riding strong on the momentum of their initial win, roundly defeated the underperforming Englishmen 3-0 earlier today. Using what one spectator referred to as "blitzkrieg tactics," the Vixens dominated the match, claiming possession for an astonishing 81% of the game. The team made over three dozen shots on the goal, while holding the Englishmen to only three shots, none of them successful. The result assures Ravenspire a slot in the next round, and eliminates the 7th-seeded Englishmen from the competition.

The Belmore Fqmily managed to squeeze passed Ur6 putting them in command on Group H. Alan Belmore scored a cool and collected goal from a short corner, smashing it passed the goal keeper.
Spauldmerica plays solid defense but lacked offense against the much higher ranked KP. The final score was 0-0 draw to put Spauldmerica at a -0-1-1 record, and they continue to go winless in World Field Hockey play. The next match is against a lower ranked team so hopefully Spauldmerica can pull of thier first win in FHWC history.
Timway recovered from it's 2-2 draw against Coffee Cup to win handily over Omaris by a score of 4-1. This leaves Timway undefeated in its last seven Cup games, including winning the last cup. Coach Black was somewhat pleased with the team's effort today. "Our defensive play could still be improved, but we had our best offensive performance in our history today, so I have nothing to complain about on that end. Our defense needs to return to the form it held last Cup however if we wish to repeat as champions."

SPECTACULAR DIFIORE HAS SHUTOUT AS AGNOSTICIUM PLAYS GRAND MASTER MARK TO A DRAW
(AP) - Liz DiFiore secured her second shutout of the tournament as she held the team from Grand Master Mark to zero points. In spectacular fashion, she deftly blocked 28 shots as her supporting defense reeled without star defender Vanessa Baker. Time and again, the offense was able to penetrate the leaky Agnostican defense, only to be stopped at the goal by a diving, blocking and wrathful keeper.
DiFiore herself was called on two penalties but denied the Grand Master Mark team points as she successfully blocked both penalty strokes. After the game when questioned about her spectacular play she just shrugged and smiled with a few words.
"We came out here today, once again, to prove to everyone that we are a good team. I was jsut reading the ball really well and was on teh top of my game. I have to say that those players from Grand Master Mark are excellent shooters and I was incredibly lucky... hopefully that luck will continue."
Anessa Burbank was held to her first scoreless competition in two years as she was unable to ignite the Agnostican offense. The opposing defenders shut the Agnostican women out of their defensive zone for three quarters of the game, resulting in only seven shots taken on goal.
"They played great defense. There was nothing I could do... no holes at all. They did a great job of blocking our runs into their zone and I have to hand it to them, they were uncanny at intercepting our passes. If we don't fix our scheme and they get as many shots on us again, I'm afraid we'll lose. Liz played a great game though... no one can take that from her."
We seem a surprise package so far, with a 4-0 win then a 2-2 draw, as long as we can scrape a draw or lose narrowly to TBF it looks like we could go through!!!

"Giley!*" was the only comment that coach Ri gave about the match against the Weegies. Even though the Rejistanha'ny fought like lions, they lost 0-2. Y was a bit more clear: "Our Defense was... haaa..., call it substandard! Also: we didn't make the final step and scored. It's kinda giley, but next the game is against a team that is even more oddball than we. Perhaps we can even get past group stage!"

Weegies On Top Form
The Weegies continued their good run of games with a hard-won 2-0 victory against fellow seeds Rejistania. Superb play on both sides meant that the score did not reflect the valiant efforts of Rejistania, with a couple of unlucky defensive errors giving the match to The Weegies.
Our national manager had this to say: "At the end of the day, sometimes it all comes down to luck. I felt we were equals that time, and I feel that Rejistania really could have come back at any time. But they were very unlucky, and sometimes, that's all that divides winners and losers."
This means that The Weegies are almost definitely through to the next round, and if Joshh have beaten Marno in their match, they will be through, and the match against Joshh will be merely a formality.

From the Sikenian Daily:
Rejistanha'ny smash Marno
The Rejistanha'ny may have lost the first 2 matches, but that does not mean, they are minnows, out of any comparism and tooday they proved this spectacularly. Marno did'nt have more than one chance in this furous goalfest, which ended 4-0 for the Orange-Blues. Y began with a quick lead goal, just after the match begun, Len and Hangatil made the second and third goal. After that, the Rejistanha'ny merely wanted to keep the score and played a very defensive match. This was the big chance for Marno: A marnoan player took advance of one error in the defense, but Kase Hetes prevented the worst. After this, the Orange-Blues again kept on attacking and Y finally scored the 4-0.
Rejistanain fans didn't expect such a high victory and chanted the soccer anthem xamjona tekne (World champion) as if they were already in the finals. But parts of the text matched perfectly the situation: 'Xen'la'aru lasane sejil, xen'la'xkora, 'la'viki venil' (We were minnows, but we have scored and won in psite of this)
OOC: Does anyone object to call a 4 -0 smashing?

Hopeless Halfassed Heading Home
A truly dismal performance by the Halfassed hockey side saw them crash out of the third hockey WC.
After being humiliated by Coffee cup in the previous game, Halfassed went into the final group game against Timway knowing that even a resounding victory might not secure qualification.
In the end, even a victory didn't look likely, as Timway tore apart the defence and only Iain Taylure prevented the score being embarrasing.
The final score of 2-1 was almost a joke, frankly how this team was able to come this tournament a be expected to compete is beyond this reporter.
Two players, GK - Iain Taylure and scoring machine Sean Bendy are world class players, the rest of the team is frankly mediocere at best, and unfortunatly this time it showed. Maybe this will force the government to put more resources into the sports teams it sends onto the world stage. If it doesn't, it may well start to become embarrasing to be from Halfassed.

Timway has claimed the top spot in Group C after a 2-1 victory over Halfassed. Coach Black was mildly disappointed with his team's effort. "We are not playing like the team that won the Cup last time. We need to do much better in order to repeat as champtions, especially on the defensive end." Timway has now gone undefeated for eight consecutive games, believed to be the longest run in Hockey World Cup history.
With news that no-hoping minnows Friendly Toys had beaten Daistilla 3-2, Akbarland comfortably played out a 0-0 draw with an insipid DePaul team knowing full well that a draw was all it required to qualify for the second round. Afterwards team coach Malik Ali was said to have described the Depaul players as 'over-rated','mediocre','stupidly lucky' and' lacking any personality whatsoever'.

The Ravenspire Vixens today registered a comfortable 3-1 victory over East Canuckistan to easily claim top position in their group. The team's aggressive play style was once more showcased to great effect, though a few spectators continued to note the relatively loose defense. Still, with an average ratio of three goals scored per goal allowed, the team has significantly improved over their performance in the first World Cup.

A 3-2 defeat by Joshh, always considered the main threat by the Weegies side, means that The Weegies end up in second place in the group, and has also ended The Weegies complete defensive shutout in the World Cup, with the less than impressive stats of 6 goals for, 3 goals against.
A lot of the fans seem to think that The Weegies didn't play to their full standard, because they knew they'd go through anyway. There was definitely a lacklustre defensive performance, full of errors we didn't expect our now fairly seasoned side to make, although main goalscorer Garnett made up for that with a good double, one from a penalty corner.
Our national manager had this to say: "At the end of the day, we were simply outclassed. Joshh are a good, solid side, and we were desevedly beaten. We'll have to take lessons from this, though. Especially not to be too complacent."

OK maybe there are some mistakes. But they are entirely down to my bad programming.

Kaze Progressa have confirmed the signing of new manager Ialis Pasagio as the side look to bounce back from a plainly disastrous FHWC3.
A 2-0 defeat of GMM completed a humbling group stage which saw them come plumb bottom with one point from three games, and that against lowly Spauldmerica. Incredibly, the Progressans didn't score once, unless you count an own goal in the GMM match from a monster deflection off Faieaj Jaizanisle.
Most hope Pasagio will turn things around. He says he will bring 'a culture of creativity and originality' to the side. A rumour first mentioned in the Progressa Plus magazine claims he is giving the whole squad singing lessons.
(Way OOC: full marks to anyone who spots the obscure singing reference within this RP)

A 2-1 victory over cellar-dweelers Ur6 was just what the doctor ordered for the Fighting Ostriches. With the news of the Belmore-Never Setting Sun draw, that meant a three-way tie for the top spot. Goal difference made the difference, and Tanah Burung advanced to the next round, where they have high hopes for something other than a quick exit this year.
I'M FURIOUS
How can we possibly have a goal difference of 0, we won 4-0 then drew two games!!!
It's outrageous, i demand an enquiry. The Belmore Family - GET IT SORTED.

Afterwards team coach Malik Ali was said to have described the Depaul players as 'over-rated','mediocre','stupidly lucky' and' lacking any personality whatsoever'
Over-rated and mediocre? hmmm.this comming from you
PS- You are stupidly lucky we didn't mobilize out 3 airborne divisions for that... Keep your players in line sir....

OOC: NSS is right. According to the scores that have been posted, he should have 7 GF and 3 (not 7) GA, for a GD of 4.
There seem to be some other mistakes, too... the third group totals 14 GF but only 12 GA; the sixth group, 20 GF but 22 GA; the seventh, 15 GF but 18 GA; and the eighth, 14 GF but 18 GA.
If NSS's GA are changed to 3, in accordance with the posted scores, the eighth group works out. I haven't doublechecked the others to see where the discrepancies lie.
(The other four groups seem okay; at least, their GF - GA totals 0.)
Spauldmerican Hurricanes Take First win in team History!
In an amazing OT win over Agnosticum to go 1-1-1.
Is it top in each division that make the playoffs?

BURBANK'S 2 GOALS NOT ENOUGH FOR WIN
Tyrael, Agnosticium (AP) - Anessa Burbank's two goals were not enough to give Agnsoticium the win over Spauldmerica as the game went into overtime. Spauldmerica scored halfway through the extra period to hand Agnosticium their first loss of group play and put them to a record of 1-1-1. The Agnos team went ahead early as Burbank scored on a slashing drive up the center of the field on a perfect pass from Jenna Christofar. Spauldmerica charged back later in the first and tied the game, followe dby a lightning fast strike by Burbank again.
Well into the last period, itlooked as though Agnosticium was going to win it when Spauldmerica figured out the defensive scheme and hammered the Agnos defense. Without star defended Vanessa Baker, the Agnostican team was simply overmatched and DiFiore scored on again to send the game into overtime.
Spauldmerica and Agnsoticium traded scoring opportunities in the extra period until an excellent shot by a Spauldmerican forward shot past DiFiore for the win. After the game a dejected DiFiore discussed her performance. "I was really disappointed in myself. I thought I should have hd a couple fo those saves, but that's not to take away from an excellent Spauldmerican squad. They shot the ball harder than anyone we've faced so far and had me ont he ropes whenever they came into our defensive zone. They're a tough team. Hopefully we'll rebound from this loss and keep up our good play. We came in unranked and we've accoutned well for ourselves so far. No matter what, we can go home proud and always look forward to next year if we don't advance later on."

Confusion reigned in the Fighting Ostriches camp over who had qualified for the next round, after keen-eyed observers pointed out an error in goal differences. Three teams are tied for the group lead with one win and two draws apiece, meaning none can possibly have a negative goal difference.
"Math is hard," said the ostriches coach, declining to attempt to add the figures. "Maybe we go though, maybe not. Blessed be the random number gods."

AGNOSTICIUM FALLS SHORT IN ROUND OF 16
Once again, Anessa Burbank proved her worth as an offensive catalyst, scoring a goal and assisting on another as Agnosticium fell short of the quarterfinals by a goal. A surprise in the tournament so far, Agnosticium was simply outplayed by DePaul in the final period, going ahead with an upper corner shot on goalie Liz DiFiore and keeping the Agnos attackers at bay.
Unranked Agnosticium suffered it's second loss in a row to exit the tournament after a convincing shut-out against 12th ranked Kaze Progressa and a nil-nil draw against 13th ranked Grand Master Mark. Hopes were high against 24th ranked Spauldmerica, but Agnosticium lost and their momentum shattered in overtime. They were finally knocked out by the 3rd ranked team from DePaul and while saddened by the loss, the team was, overall, very positive.
"We had a great opportunity here in this World Cup and we were able to successfully compete on the world stage, so we're very proud of that. I think that everyone now knows that we're not just a pushover team and we come out to play every game, no matter the opponent." Karen Montalvo was the team's assist leader with four.
Anessa Burbank simply looked at the scoreboard as time expired and grinned ruefully. "We had this going into a draw and then we were simply outplayed. The players from DePaul are simply amazing and we wish them the best of luck in the rest of the tournament. Naturally I think that we could have done better, but the loss of Ness' (Vanessa Baker, Agnosticium's star defender) and the stellar play of our opponents got to us in the end. There's always next year, right?"

Tempest in a Coffee Cup
The Fighting Ostriches were confused. And a bit dazed from their hangovers. They had been thrilled to ride into the second round, then disappointed when they thought they were out, and then exhilerated to discover that they had advanced after all.
First up was Coffee Cup. "Who they," commented one Ostrich fan. "Oooh, we'll kick their ... saucers." But it was not to be. The Tanah Burung squad seemed to have their heads in the sand as they gave up one goal, and then a second three minutes later. They were unable to recover from the bad patch, and went down to 2-0 defeat. Still, this is Tanah Burung's best performance to date in the Field Hockey World Cup.
"A new nickname will bring us new triumphs in the next Cup," said a random soothsayer. Bookies are already considering what the new nickname will be. The Spitting Clams, perhaps.
Thank you for the challenge Agnosticium, it showed us we are ment to go the distance against good teams like yourselves. (3-2 final)
The Dragons first attempt for FHWC success came short, as the they failed to pass the round of 16. Country manager, Jian Mckleenan says that the team did well but 'didn't live up ti his expectations at all.'
"They just didn't try. They played like a bunch of Dragonian school girls. If we came out there with more heart every game, the Dragons would find themselves with a medal."
Team captain,Markko Martynson added fuel to the fire by saying that it's The Empire's fault for not funding a National League.
"We have no professional league, and no where to develop. I think The Empire should do something about this."
