Der Angst

DA, Mönchengladbach:
It is late evening, 22pm. The night is illuminated by the dim lights of the industry, as it is always the case.
It´s mid- january, and nearly 10cm of snow lie on the ground, it`s blackness reflecting the lights of planes approaching the airport.
Black snowflakes fall from the sky, although only a few... It´s -10°C.
From a few factory towers, flames emerge. The industry is busy.
Children play the games of the young, or earn money, if their parents are not part of one of the megacorporations that have their own schools, they need to learn in the education corporations, and that is expensive.
There is one specific factory, near the harbour, that seems to be nearly out of duty. Only a few men hang around, talking with their silent voices, smoking, joking.
The harbour is only half- full. A few foreign ships are there, but most foreigners don`t travel to DA, it´s industry is just too poisonous. Indeed, 'normals' if they aren`t scared by the telepaths, tend not to survive a visit in DA, if they don´t carry altered DNA or rather expensive full body protections.
No wonder external transit and transport corporations normally fail to get entry to the DA market, although technically, it´s open.
Most ships in the harbour are DA transport subs, one of them just leaves to one of the two already existic subaquatic domes (A third is currently under construction).
It´s fascinating enough, though, that the water is not frozen. The reason is simple enough: The masses of chemicals in it prevent it from freezing, actually, it wouldn`t freeze until a temperature of about -48°C is reached.
Then, a ship comes in. A foreign, surface ship. Actually, of Iraqstani origin, but that is only known by the people that wait for the ship, and by the ships crew.
"Ah, there they are."
The men start moving.
A short talk with the people on the ship, more men come out, transporters wait in front of the ship. Slowly, large containers are relocated, from the ship onto the transporters. Then, they drive to the factory.
One of the containers is open. If one would stand nearby, one would see a tiny limb hanging out of it.
Inside the factory, they unload the containers.
Huge cranes take them, open them, and pour the things inside into giant caldrons. The 'things' inside the containers are, in fact, corpses. Mostly human ones.
Men stand nearby, operating the machines.
A sign, at the entrance of the factory, says:
Biomass- recycling facility #3786

Kusanagi Technologies production facility #476, coastal shipyard:
Tons of raw materials come in. Different colors, mainly a tight mass of... something.
The director shows the new employees the facility:
"You see, this is our raw material. All our tech is, in fact, organic. Subs, planes, everything. You wouldn`t believe what is possible. And no, we have no problems with solidness and other stuff, look at turtles, their 'hull' is damn solid, don´t you think?
Anyway, this stuff was cleaned when it arrived. Now, we have the raw material, bioorganic structures. We add nanites, some metallic components, and have the metalloorganic material nearly anything is based of. And then, we begin to form the semi- sentinent transporters we produce here."
"Thats... impressive, director."
"Indeed, it is. And we plan to expand further, to conquer foreign markets. Nothing will stop us, nothing!"
Amazed by the enthusiasm of the director, the new employees clap. It´s true, what they do, will lead them. To the future, a bright future.
