Introduction
Background: The Empire of Tyrrhenoi ruled the land now known as Automastan for centuries before it gained its independence. In 1742, the entirely pagan government began curtailing the rights of its Christian and Jewish subjects, angering the Automites. With every right lost, animosity to their foreign oppressors grew. Eventually, in 1748, the government (who by this time had earned the nickname of "Tyrrhenian Tyrants") broke the Automites' last straw by forcing conversions to paganism.
Revolution erupted -- and the eruption continued for 17 bloody years. Thousands upon thousands of Automites died in service to their cause -- the cause of freedom. Finally, the Tyrrhenians, bankrupted by this revolution, agreed to Automite self-rule, resulting in the formal declaration of independence for Automastan on August 18, 1765. By the end of the century, Tyrrhenoi was no more, due to total economic collapse and the revolution of all other subjugated peoples -- as well as the Tyrrhenians themselves.
The Automites recognized that they would need a structured government immediately after they had won their independence, and so sent delegates to the southern port city of Alkirk to write a constitution. For six months, the delegates debated what the best government would be for their newborn country. Finally, on March 18, seven months after winning independence, the Constitution was approved and sent out for ratification -- which followed with similar swiftness.
Today, Automastan stands as a model of political stability, partly because of the people's fierce patriotism and partly because political parties were banned in an early constitutional amendment. The government is willing to befriend any nation that does not subjugate part of its population like the Tyrrhenians did. The country has a vibrant, growing economy, fair wages, and a willingness to trade with others. The government owns two colonies -- named Yorgle and New Tyrrhenoi -- and both are developing into model states. Automastan is an active member of the New Conservative and New Jewish Alliances, the new Confederation, and the League of Defence.
